[Goanet-News] The Kulagar of Goa and the Konkan -- A Potential System to Conserve the Crop Diversity

2020-12-28 Thread Frederick Noronha
Abstract

Goa and Konkan region of Maharashtra are parts of Western Ghats with a huge
diversity of flora and fauna. Hot-humid climate with heavy monsoon makes
this area a biodiversity hotspot. Farmers of this region have a
conventional, multitier, homestead system of gardening called kulagar,
inherited from their ancestors, to cultivate and conserve the local crop
plants near their household. It is an integrated system with the skeletal
component as areca nut palms. Other types of crops included in the system
are cash crops, plantation crops, spices, fruits, local vegetables,
medicinal and aromatic plants and fl ower crops. Some of the kulagars
include animal components to make the system cost-effective and holistic.
Bioresource conservation, crop diversifi cation, recycling of the resources,
value addition and processing and byproduct utilization are important
features of a kulagar. Advanced crop production technologies are being
incorporated in kulagar by the new generation farmers to make it
sustainable and economically viable. Key Words: Conservation, Crop
diversity, Goa, Konkan, Kulagar

[Goanet] Posro (shop) opened by Goa Sudharop in Margao for low-income and needy on Dec 22, 2020

2020-12-28 Thread George Pinto
Please see photos at this link and write-up below

Goa Sudharop Launches Posro To Promote And Support Traditional Goan Food, Farm
Produce And Crafts

As part of of its ongoing COVID assistance to Goans, Goa Sudharop opened a
unique POSRO (shop) in Margao, Goa on December 22, 2020 to help traditional
Goan artisans such as farmers, cooks, bakers, potters and others can sell their
products (traditional Goan food, spices, sweets, organic vegetables, farm
produce, etc.). The need for jobs and income in this pandemic is important and
Goa Sudharop is providing the store space free to the various vendors.

According to Goa Sudharop volunteer Irene Almeida, "Posro by Goa Sudharop" is a
social initiative empowering Goans to showcase their skills, talents and
expertise as the Goa Sudharop supported platform helps Goans earn a living. At
the same time, Goa Sudharop intends to revive Goan traditions and pass on our
legacy for generations to come. At Posro we respect the hands which toil to
bring the food to our tables, hence we felicitated a padekar (traditional
coconut plucker Pedro Pereira), xetkamti (farmer Anthonetta Fernandez) and a
randpin (traditional cook Manikbai Naik) who inaugurated and opened the Posro
as our special, favored guests. In Goa Sudharop's 20 year history, we cater to
the common person, usually the forgotten Goan below the poverty line and
intentionally no politician or other so-called dignitaries have been special
guests at our events.
Some of the products available include homemade oil, vinegar, jaggery, home
ground masala such as Xacuti, Ambottik, Recheado and Jeeremire. Also, Goan
grown spices, cereals, rice, millets, cowpeas along with organically grown
fruits and vegetables are also for sale - please note items vary over time
based on availability.

Mouth-watering dishes such as Pez with kalchi kodi, mori ambotik, fezoado, Appa
de camarao, Chicken Xacuti, Kotkothe, Kismur, Tisreo sukhe, Bangdho recheado,
to name a few are also available. In addition, authentic Goan sweets made or
baked the traditional way were sold, specially Christmas sweets were the main
attraction at this time of year.

Posro has a Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/Posro-104699381538618 do
like and follow them for updates. They are open for constructive feedback. We
want to reach out to the remote areas of Goa to promote the farmers and
artisans and they look forward to your patronage. Please show your love and
support to keep the Goan legacy alive which gives our Goenkars immense JOY and
HOPE as they benefit from this initiative.

Address: POSRO, Shop No 1, Carvalho Apartments, Behind LIC Building, Comba,
Margao, Goa.

Subject: [Goanet] WILL THE PRESIDENT OF INDIA CLARIFY?

Airesbab

President visit to Goa was unexpected and his assessment on our beaches and
forest was remarkable and made us happy to know that all is well in Goa.
As you said I am also interested which beaches he visited because being a
Goan I do not find any of the beaches in Goa are in good condition
especially pollution is rampant in every beach in Goa. Mining and sewage
have destroyed our beaches. The forest I have a faint idea about the
forests in Goa but I was told maximum of forest is been damaged as trees
and plants have been cut and vanished just to give opportunity for
construction of high rise buildings, airports, bridges etc to come up.
Which forest has he visited?
I think somebody having good knowledge in the environment should have
guided him as it appears that he is fond of these things.
If our beaches and forest were good then what would be the fate of other
beaches and forest in India. Definetely they must have been worst than Goa.
Thank you President for your appreciation of what you have seen in Goa
during your visit.
Stephen Dias

Yesterday it was preposterous to hear the President of India Ram Nath
Kovind make a public statement that he has been influenced by Goa?s
forests and beaches.

Could the President of India please tell us which beaches and forests of
Goa he has cared to visit which have influenced him.

[Goanet] Bad news from Zanzibar.....

2020-12-28 Thread Antonio Menezes
Prof. Adolf Mascarenhas informs us that a part of the
House of Wander ( formerly known as Sultan,s palace)
in Zanzibar had collapsed.
I remember from my elders in the fifties that Sultan of
Zanzibar was being rather un cooperative to the terrorist
nations of Western Europe who were out to carve out large
portions of African territories as their own spheres of
influence and managed to do it so well at the Berlin
Conference in 1884
The British who were eyeing islands of Zanzibar and
Pemba ( famous for cloves production and lying opposite
the port of Tanga) met with stiff resistence from the Sultan
of Zanzibar and to cow him down the British sent a gunboat
which bombarded the town of Zanzibar and in the process
knocked down a part of Sultan's palace.( perhaps the same
part of palace that came down recently.
The islands of Zanzibar and Pemba being off the coast of
Tanzania should have naturally become part of Tanganyika
that Germany obtained for herself in 1884 but somehow the
British clung to their possession.
Perhaps, Prof Adolf Mascarenhas who has vast knowledge of
the East African coast will throw more light on this subject
provided there is some substance it it.
