[Goanet] The Opinion Poll

2021-02-01 Thread Roland Francis
While I have no different opinion from Antonio Menezes on Alvaro Loyola
Furtado, I sometimes ask myself with benefit of hindsight whether Goa would not
have been better off as a district of Maharastra if the Opinion Poll had gone
the other way.

Here are several reasons:
a) On the corruption scale, Maharashtra Police are less corrupt than Goa
Police. Besides unlike Goa, they strike fear in criminals and their case solve
rate is much much higher and quicker too.
B) Their politicians are held to account not only by the press in the state but
also by the active and militant sections of their society.
C) Maharastra politicians have a lot of private respect for Goa and its
citizens - more than Goa politicians have shown so far to their own people.
D) Goa would not have been filled by boorish and uncouth politically
well-connected moneybags from northern India. More cosmopolitan, law abiding
and educated people would have populated the place.
E) Goa through Maharastra, would have had the clout with Delhi that it can only
dream of as an insignificant nobody state. That would have earned the territory
several advantages.
F) Goa would have no electricity issues being part of the Maharastra
surplus-power grid.

Antonio Menezes writes:
Dr. Alvaro was above all a humble aristocrat from the village of Chinchinim. He
has many achievements to his credit. But for me, personally, he was the giant
Salcete politician who helped garner valuable Opinion Poll votes particularly
in Salcete. I may add that he never aspired to have a statue of himself.

[Goanet] Benefit to pensioners filing tax returns

2021-02-01 Thread Nelson Lopes
Many pensioners do not file IT returns claiming senior citizenship rebate
by signing the form 16 in the bank. But what they do not realize is, by not
filing IT a zero tax returns they loose out on one major facility. Hope
this information is shared with Maximum pensioners, so they do not loose
out on this benefit

*This is from Shri. N V NAGARAJ, A Lawyer and Ex. Banker from Mysore .We
Thank him for this Information.*

*Pensioner's Accidental Death*

Most of the Pensioners hesitate in filing returns, but, here is an
important information that shows that filing IT returns has great advantage
to the family of Pensioners at the time of any accidental death of the
Pensioner.

As per section 166 of the motor vehicle act, 1988 ( Supreme Court Judgement
under Civil appeal No. 9858 of 2013, arising out of SLP ( C) No. 1056 of
2008 dated 31st October 2013),

The family of the Pensioner died in an accident is entitled to 10 times of
average income of the last three years, provided he or she had filed the IT
returns for the past three years.

For example, if the monthly pension of a pensioner is 25000 /- his annual
income is 3,00,000. For three years his average income also say, for easy
calculations is 3,00,000, then his family will get 10 times of 3 lakhs -
30, 00, 000 Rupees from the Government. No other proof, other than IT
returns will be admitted by the Court also. So, filing IT returns by the
Pensioner regularly, will go a long way in providing a big economic relief
to the bereaved family of the Pensioner on his/her death by accident.

Failure to file IT returns due to lack of information about this advantage
leads to huge loss to the family of the Pensioner on his death.

Response: believe it or not when Saligao had their first occasion in
London, at the door they asked us to become members! Talk of putting a gun
to our head. It was a New Year eve dance so we became members. Years later,
found out that we were made Ordinary Members. There was then a discussion
to disenfranchise us years later. Thankfully it failed. I am a Saligao
Ordinary Member to this day. Unable to vote...

[Goanet] India's real and virtual worlds

2021-02-01 Thread Rajan Parrikar
Have you wondered why websites in India are, in general, so awful? The
templates are outdated, the web technologies behind the curve, the visual
design an eyesore, several links invariably broken. In a word, unkempt. It
is not just the small trader’s page that is delinquent. Examples abound of
the dismal websites of national institutes, official government pages,
universities, and important organizations. And I haven’t even gotten to the
content yet. Why is this the case?

I don’t have an answer to the question. Observation suggests that the
situation in the virtual world has a direct analogue in the real world.
Step out of your home in India and onto the footpath. Doesn’t matter which
city or town. What do you see? Broken tiles, cracked concrete, shabby
finish, uneven steps, squatters, debris, all peppered with dog droppings,
paan stains, and trash. In short, a picture of carelessness and general
neglect.

My proposal is that the Indian’s virtual world is a mirror reflection of
his real external world. This still doesn’t get to the deeper “why.” The
other day while driving over the new Mandovi bridge I saw mounds of
piled-up debris beneath the columns, by-products of the massive project.
Never a clean finish, that’s just not an Indian thing. Like the electrician
who comes to your home to install an appliance - he leaves behind a trail
of dunnage and dirt for you to clean up.
