[Goanet-News] Looking for medicines... in the garden

2021-09-18 Thread Frederick Noronha
Looking for medicines... in the garden

12 Sep: Navhind Times By Frederick Noronha. Many with an interest in plants
in Goa have repeatedly focussed on this subject. One book that came my way
was an English translation of Garcia da Orta's 'Colloquies on the Simples &
Drugs of India'. This does not seem to have got sufficiently noticed in
Goa… Garcia da Orta had travelled to India, arriving in September 1534, and
practised as a physician in India for 36 years. The book was published
[originally] in 1563, and is written in the form of a dialogue … The book
mentions local (Goa, perhaps) weights such as the 'ratti', 'quintal',
'maund', 'khandis' (or candil?), and 'canta'. There are also discussions of
green ginger (adrac), lac, opium (afiom), pearls, diamonds, tamarind, wild
cumin, aloe, areca, bamboo, bananas, bhang, brazilwood, 'calafur' (cloves),
elachi (cardamon) and a whole lot of other plants believed to have
medicinal roles. This is only the tip of the proverbial iceberg… Goa and
its surrounding areas do seem to have some special link with the field of
medicinal plants … 979 words. click here

[Goanet] Religious Groups Found Wanting

2021-09-18 Thread Mervyn Maciel
Dear Ivan,

Thanks for your post.
I have not read the full report but merely followed what was
announced in the news/national press. Here is a link you
may find useful:

Religious groups in UK failing children over sexual abuse ...
https://www.bbc.co.uk › news › uk-58420270

2 Sept 2021 — There are "shocking failings" and "blatant hypocrisy" in the
way major UK religious groups handle child sex abuse allegations, ...
I have been fairly active in my parish and various religious
groups I belonged to in the past - but now at 92, and following a recent
heart attack, I have been advised to slow down. Hard though this is,
I have to listen to medical advice and am trying to adjust my
'new life' accordingly.
It is a shame that so much of what was going on in religious
institutions(Catholic included) was swept under the carpet for so long-
but eventually, the truth has to surface.

Sorry Ivan - in the rush of replying to your post, I omitted to
comment on the question you raise about my e-mail address.
Many years ago, my late wife and I rented a plot from our local council
where we grew our own vegetables/fruits etc. Seeing we were working on
the land, I felt that *'watuwashamba' (*people of the land or farm people
in Swahili) would be an appropriate address for our e-mail and this has
amused quite a few from East Africa!

[Goanet] NAVIGATING CYBERSPACE EVERY MORNING

2021-09-18 Thread Aires Rodrigues
There couldn’t be a better way to start the day than by sharing one’s
thoughts with people across the globe through various groups on Facebook,
Whatsapp, Twitter and other internet based mailing lists.

With hundreds of thousands of people that I am able to communicate with
every morning, on cyberspace, coming from varied strata of society, it has
been my endeavor to express the viewpoint in very simple words, without
mind wrecking 'tharoorisms'. Fortunately I did my primary education at a
government Primary school in Ribandar and not at Oxford.

We owe it to the advancement in Technology to be able to communicate so
easily and effectively with people around the world.

We need to encourage people to speak up and express their views fearlessly
but also fairly. With all this cyber communication now possible, the world
has become such a small place unlike in the 60’s and 70’s when one had to
queue up for hours to make a call to even Bombay , leave alone the luxury
of speaking overseas.

The advancement in communication is a great boon which we need to make the
best by making new friends and acquaintances every day in all continents of
this world which has now amazingly become a global village.

Thank God for the gifts of science and technology, and thank you all for
your patience and kindness.

Mervyn,
I have been a member of the World Conference of Religions & Peace (WCRP) since
inception in Canada, & served on its Executive Board.

This issue specifically is not on the agenda or the purpose of WCRP.
However, many interfaith activities are coordinated re. various issues.

Do ask the London UK chapter to do what it can. I used to keep in touch with
the London chapter, which is widely connected to various religious community
organizations in the UK.

You mention a report, but I do not see a link to the report. Could u send it to
me?

In some faith communities, there may be more of a hierarchical relationship in
families & in the faith community itself, & therefore less of a a chance of
publicizing this & pursuing solutions, or of widening the circle of interfaith
understanding.

Do consider joining WCRP as a member & participate in their activities.

For years in Canada, there have been investigations of Catholic clergy
historical abuse of young boys in educational institutions.

The Catholic Church in Canada claims it is pursuing education of clergy &
correcting wrongs, etc., on this sensitive subject, & information is less
forthcoming.

There have been some court cases in Nova Scotia, etc..

Mervyn, re. your e-address, is it located in a ‘shamba’? Very dense?

[Goanet-News] Roshan D'Silva, and the idea behind Pilgrim Stays

2021-09-18 Thread Frederick Noronha
After studying telecom engineering at the prestigious IIT-Bombay, Roshan
DSilva found his connection the religious to their faith, through travel.

Just before the 2020 pandemic, he co-founded Pilgrim Stays, a joint venture
between his Tripvillas and the ATC Publishers of Bengaluru (founded 1946, a
leading publisher and seller of Christian religious texts across India).

Earlier, in 2010, Roshan was behind Tripvillas, "one of the world’s leading
holiday home rental companies [which] has a variety of assets including its
management software, booking engines, distribution, Property Management
tools." This was backed by marquee investors including the Singapore
Government (NRF/National Research Foundation).

I agree completely.
One has got nothing to do with another.
How can you compare St José Vaz’s status petition with abuse in no more than 5%
of the Church hierarchy.

This is an important topic that has been rightly brought to public
attention. ?Sexual or any other abuse has to be corrected and regulated.
?We're going through the hearings about the cover up of abuse of young
gymnasts like Simone Biles by the team doctor, Larry Nassar. ?The cover up
to protect the institution is particularly disturbing and needs to be
corrected. It seems odd that secular forces like the legal and law
enforcement sectors of society have to correct the morals of religious
groups. ?But it is absolutely necessary.
I do want to take this opportunity to answer the unskilful posts that say
that we should give up our efforts for making St. Joseph Vaz a Patron Saint
(Asian or other) because of sexual abuse in the Church. ?It's like saying
we should give up gymnastics just because Larry Nassar abused young
gymnasts. ?

It was amusing to read some state appointed Portuguese translators with No
authentic qualification but a mere certificate issued by a private body
under the name of Institute de Camoes to prove their point.
A certificate from Institute of Camoes is a meagre certificate and not a
degree offered by a University.
There are very many bogus translators shunning money from various sources
private and government offering their version of translation. This bogus
translation who were sanctified by the Parrikar government need to be
thrown out and rightly so, the Pramod Sawant government has done it. It
must be understood so that worthy documents are translated by worthy
qualified men and not by fraudulent persons pretending to be experts and
making money at the cost of the government and private sector individuals
who require translated Portuguese documents for their own use.

The report is a timely warning for ALL religious groups.
For too long now they have been hiding under the cloak
of secrecy wanting to preserve their good name while
allowing innocent victims to suffer further indignity.
While I know the Catholic authorities in Britain have introduced
stringent measures to safeguard individuals against Child Sex abuse,
a lot still needs to be done throughout ALL religious organisations.
They need reminding that they are certainly not above the law.

[Goanet] Commander Solo: Abhilash Tomy (GQ, September 2021)

2021-09-18 Thread V M
Call him Abhilash. Like the narrator in Moby Dick, the “watery part of
the world” is his obsession. In that classic 19th century novel,
Captain Ahab compulsively pursues “the great white whale”, but our
hero’s fixation is the Golden Globe Race to circumnavigate the world
solo. Consider these numbers: over 6,000 people have climbed Mount
Everest since Hillary and Tenzing, and at least 570 have “slipped the
surly bonds of Earth” into outer space after Gagarin. But scarcely 180
humans have ever sailed around the world by themselves without
stopping, and only one is Indian.

https://www.gqindia.com/get-smart/content/meet-abhilash-tomy-the-only-indian-to-have-ever-sailed-around-the-world-solo-without-stopping

In 2011, Lieutenant Commander Tomy of the Indian Navy found himself
struggling in an isolated quadrant of the Indian Ocean. "Along with
his mentor, India’s first circumnavigator Commander Dilip Donde, he
had completed the South Atlantic Race from Cape Town to Rio. Then,
after sailing back to South Africa with another teammate, Tomy went it
alone for the voyage home. That odyssey changed everything. “On the
first day, the autopilot stopped working. That meant no sleep, which
could induce severe hallucination. I called Commander Donde, and he
was of no help. I called the guy who did the wiring, and he too was of
no use. I had a choice. I could either come back or press on. I
decided to press on.”

Things got very bad, very fast. Tomy says, “I felt seasick for the
first time in a year. I lost a batten. A sail tore. There was fire in
the generator. The wind vane autopilot broke, and a storm raged
outside.”

The young sailor became “very upset and angry at someone. I couldn’t
pinpoint who. On the fourth day, I realised that the anger that was
eating into me might not let me finish the voyage. And if I did not
finish, the non-stop circumnavigation would be in danger. That was
when I discovered the power of chanting. I chanted meaningless sounds
for hours till my mind was under control. From then it did not matter
if there was a storm outside or if it was sunny and calm. I was always
peaceful.”

The story of one of India’s greatest adventurers began with that
episode in the Arabian Sea, because Abhilash Tomy has swiftly
propelled himself into the front rank of the most highly regarded
contenders in the most punishing and extreme competition in the
history of sport: non-stop solo racing around the world that’s limited
to boats and equipment that were available fifty years ago in “the
golden era of sail.”

As you might expect from his daredevil exploits, Tomy is
archetypically dashing, fit, and fearless. What sets him apart is his
scholarly approach. When we first spoke he meticulously walked me
through the history of the sport, from the pioneering voyages of
Joshua Slocum in 1894-98, to Sir Francis Chichester in 1966-67, whose
notoriety led to the Sunday Times sponsoring the first round-the-world
yachting competition, the 1968-69 Golden Globe race.

That event set the standard for what has remained an extraordinarily
unconventional – some might say cuckoo – athletic endeavour. Only one
entrant – the legendary English sailor Sir Robin Knox-Johnston –
actually made it to the finish line. Another simply pretended to be
racing from onshore (he later committed suicide). A third competitor
resisted stopping, and kept going around the world one and a half
times before making a beeline to settle in Tahiti. Nothing like this
fiasco was even attempted again for several decades.

The sheer mystique of solo circumnavigation did linger, however,
firmly hooking India’s war hero Admiral Manohar Awati, who launched
the “Sagar Parikrama” programme to build and sail Indian boats around
the world. Our first effort was helmed by Commander Donde (he made
four stops) in 2010, with Tomy an essential part of the support team.

At that point, only one Asian (Minoru Saito of Japan) had ever sailed
the world alone without stopping. Then, in November 2012, Tomy
attempted the feat (Sagar Parikrama 2), setting off at almost the same
time as Guo Chan of China. Eventually, it was the Indian who reached
home first, tacking back into Mumbai harbour on 31st March, 2013, and
setting off an enthusiastic celebration.

After returning, Tomy still couldn’t shake the “yearning to do another
significant sailing.” An opportunity arrived in 2018, when the
Australian adventurer Don McIntyre celebrated the 50th anniversary of
the original 1968-69 Golden Globe by creating a “retro” race around
the world, relying on “sailors’ skill and traditional seamanship
alone, rather than modern technology or support crew.” Competitors
were constrained to nothing more than what Robin Knox-Johnston, the
only person who completed the original round-the-world yachting
competition had access to in “the golden age of sail”.

Tomy says, “high tech fibres, rod rigging, carbon, satellite
communication, internet, GPS, electronic autopilots, even quartz
watches were banned. The
