[Goanet] When the Lion Roars: A Tribute to Rajan Narayan
With a heavy heart I was told The Goan Observer last edition is indeed the last edition. Is this true? The kiosk where the paper is sold in Margao wears a mournful look and almost brings a tear to my eyes. Unlike in the movies in real life good people often have a small chance or none at all of success. It is the way it is - God or no God! We have to accept life as is! Mr Rajan Narayan who is ailing but still writes when he has to right a wrong is Goa’s lion in journalism and has been for decades. If there is someone in Goa who deserves a lifetime award and pension it is this man who has been an objective critic and watchman of Goa’s governments, and a stooge of no none. He has brought to light the wrongdoing of the MGP Congress and BJP governments which has prevented the further erosion of corruption and quality of life in Goa. I ask the government to award him a small recognition for his service to the state and the people of Goa. Unlike Goan politicians he has given his life in the service of the people of Goa and not sucked the life out of their bodies unlike our esteemed politicians. Long live Rajan Narayan the lion of Goa!
[Goanet] The Pulitzer Prize 2022
From The Cable: Quote A Reuters team of photographers consisting of four Indians, including the late Danish Siddiqui, were awarded a Pulitzer Prize last night for “images of Covid’s toll in India that balanced intimacy and devastation, while offering viewers a heightened sense of place”, according to the Pulitzer Prizes website. Meanwhile, the Indian government is desperately fighting the facts about the death toll. Ghastly scenes from 1 year ago. Those Reuter’s photos shamed the Indian Govt and showed the world what was happening there. With their Pulitzer Prizes, no one can call this fake news any more. Unquote. This is Danish’s second Pulitzer after the one highlighting the Rohingya Crisis in 2018. He was killed while covering combat events in Afghanistan in 2021. Roland Toronto.
[Goanet] Shireen Abu Aqla
The gathering of news all over the world must change. For that, two things must happen: 1. The freedom of journalists and reporters must be held sacred, on the same level as Embassies and Diplomatic Missions. 2. Full access must be given by all media - print, electronic and television - to the other side. As examples: with the Palestinian problem, to the Palestinians; with the Ukraine problem, to the Russians. In India to the revolutionaries and the victims of repression. Why are they protesting, why are they being victimized. Listeners and readers will decide for themselves. No longer should the western media, governments and the powerful instruments of vested corporate and political interests be allowed to dominate news dissemination. It is time for justice and fairness. Al Jazeera is a step in the right direction, but unfortunately only possible because it has the financial backing of Qatar, one of the world’s richest countries. What about the penniless, voiceless news gatherers who also must also be allowed to access the world’s conscience? We owe a debt of gratitude to reporters like Shireen Abu Aqla. She joined Al Jazeera at 26, always on the front line, and died with a bullet to the head at 51. It is reporters like her who make it possible for us to be aware of violent events in the world’s hotspots while sitting in our drawing room in safety.
