Water cartographies of Goa: Khazans, sedimentation and
dissolution of coastal cultural landscapes
Pombo, P.
Journal of Heritage Management. 4(2); 2019; 192-207.
https://doi.org/10.1177/2455929619877477
Abstract: Goa's landscape is an encounter between dry and wet
materialities, the Indian Ocean world and the Western Ghats
of Konkan, the distant and the localized, open seas and deep
currents and floodplains, estuaries and muddy soils.
Reordered in geometric geographies, these curvilineous
cultivated lowlands, named khazans, surrounded by villages,
temples and churches are part of the landscape and crucial
sensorial layers of this Indian state. Village
neighbourhoods (named waddi in Konkani) are organized not
around a solid centre, but along several interconnected paddy
fields, creating particular territorial maps of each village.
Can our perception change, thus, if we see the Goan territory
having water as its defining element, instead of a land-based
perspective, and consider these lands as cultural landscapes?
The aesthetic and heritage dimensions of cultural landscapes
are essential to perceive Goa as a place of simultaneous
dissolution and sedimentation along time and cultural
geographies. Based on recent research on Goa and the Indian
Ocean, this text proposes khazans to be recognized both as
natural elements and cultural signifiers and as the main
cartographic layers of inclusive Goan cultural landscapes.

The Shiftars, a rocking great band from the Mombasa of the 1960s

By Cecilia Mascarenhas
cecili...@hotmail.co.uk

[Written before the
of Benny almost a
year ago...]

Early last year, Cyprian Fernandes (Skip) was in contact as
he was doing true life stories for his blog and book on bands
and musicians from East Africa, and wanted a story on The
Shiftars, the 1960's band from Mombasa. Unfortunately, I
could not do it in time for publication. But here it is for
those interested.

Everyone who remembers The Shiftars ask me if they would
reunite again... I doubt it though hope they will one day!

Their interests are so diverse now besides living far apart,
it might prove to be a mammoth task! Besides Benny is a firm
believer that, despite having music in one's genes/ blood, it
is the diligence of practise, that ensures "the fit of all
players in a band should be tight and in sync" --
compatibility, when producing music and sounds, like those
that made them famous in their youth in Mombasa, as without
that, the music will just not sound right.

A personal photo book was gifted to the band boys when they
turned around 65! A kind of "Thank you" for the memories ...
which was also shared with a few close friends! This was to
give some pleasure in rekindling thoughts and memories of
their music as well as the pleasant times of our youth, the
wonderful days of being teenagers dancing to the music of The
Shiftars!

Some of this material is adapted here as well as from an
article I wrote for The Goan/Sacred Heart School's 75th
Anniversary Souvenir Brochure in 2007 since all the boys were
educated there.

The Shiftars group was formed sometime circa early
1964 by Benny Mascarenhas (lead guitar), along with
Dominic Noronha (rhythm guitar), Polly (Pauly) Dias
(bass guitar) and Rudi Lopes (drums), who were from
the Class of '65 with their Manager Victor De
Souza, being from Class of '64 of The Goan/Sacred
Heart School in Mombasa. Their interest in music
started early, influenced with the advent of
electric guitars and the new sounds/beats of Cliff
Richard and The Shadows, who had taken the world by
storm and created a new Kenyan generation when they
visited Nairobi on their tour to South Africa.

The aptly named film and song "The Young Ones" was just what
the young ones growing up in the early 60’s needed, to infuse
their youth!

Benny at the age of 12, always had an interest in music, and
whilst his father Joaquim played the violin, and his older
brothers Lambert (violin), Leslie (trumpet) and Philip
(trumpet) were musically minded, he preferred the guitar.

So to encourage his interest, his parents bought him a simple
acoustic guitar from a store in Makupa. Later, influenced by
Hank Marvin and The Shadows No.1 hit "Apache", he and his
friend Basil D’souza built themselves a guitar in the shape
of Hank’s "Fender Stratocaster" and for "electrification",
pinched the mouth-peace from a local public telephone booth.

Benny twanged his way practising different technics and
sounds, and by the age of 15, was recruited to play with a
band named Conny Kit & The Pirates. Encouraged by his
dedication, his Mum, Maggie, bought him his first pukka
electric guitar "Elite". The band consisted of Conny Telles,
Joey Costa Correia, Benny, and Lamartin D'Souza.

When the band was offered a contract in Italy,
Benny was not able go with them as he needed to
complete his schooling education and so gave his
silver band jacket to Leslie Peters (cousin of Joey
Peters of The Bandits) who was then additionally
recruited to the group. In Italy, the band renamed
themselves The Bushmen but disbanded a few years
  later

So, as he was not able to go to Italy, Benny then decided to
form his own band with his classmates who were as keen as he
was to emulate the sound of The Shadows and Cliff, especially
after their visit to Kenya, thus the formation of The
Shiftars.

Dominic on rhythm, had the voice and looks of the young Cliff
Richard and Benny, influenced by Hank Marvin, had the similar
twang of the Fender Stratocaster which brought the band's
unique sound to our very own doorstep in Mombasa along with
Rudi on drums and Polly on bass. hey practised regularly in
the garage at Gupta Villa (Dom and Rudi's abode in Ganjoni),
and as their repertoire progressed, they would occasionally
play at venues including the Rex Hotel.

In time Roger, the manager of Tudor House Hotel got to hear
of them and offered them a booking to play every Saturday
night at Tudor House Hotel. Saturday night in Mombasa was
never the same thereafter, as most teenagers made it their
venue to Shadoogie and Shindig their way through the night!

How they came about the name is a bit of a story in
itself. As the bands at that time took

[Goanet] PANAJI ROADS ARE PAVED TO HELL

2022-07-15 Thread Aires Rodrigues
The state of the roads in and around Goa’s capital city with the flooding
that is witnessed is horrifying. If sincere curative measures are not
taken, in the years to come we would have to travel across the city on
motor boats with driving licenses issued by the Captain of Ports.

Experts have for years been predicting that Panaji will see flooding and
possibly be submerged on account of the rampant unplanned concrete
structures mushrooming all over. It is inappropriate and uncalled for to
blame the rains for the flooding. Instead of placing experts on Planning
and Municipal bodies to advise the authorities, chums of politicians have
been appointed with ulterior motives and the results are there for all to
see.

Interestingly, at the road in front of and around Panaji MLA Babush
Monserrate’s mansion and his two hotels at Miramar, there has been no
flooding and those roads are intact with no potholes. This is not a miracle
but only clearly demonstrates that where there is Will there is a Way. When
will those in Power come to terms with the fact that Public Interest must
always supersede Personal interest? Planning and Development of any city
must be by professionals with expertise in the field and not by Politicians
who only focus on pecuniary gains.

[Goanet] {Dilip's essays} A sphere by any other dimension

2022-07-15 Thread Dilip D'Souza
July 15

Every four years, four mathematicians under 40 years of age are awarded the
Fields Medal. In 2022, one of those four is Maryna Viazovska of Ukraine
(though she now lives in Switzerland). She is only the second woman to win
a Fields Medal in the 86-year history of the award. (The first was Miryam
Mirzakhani of Iran, in 2014; sadly, she died in 2017.)

I've tried to explain the work of a few past Fields winners in my columns.
The same, this year. My column for Mint today is my effort to wrap my head
around the fascinating research of Viazovska. Let me know if you get a
sense of it after reading the essay.

A sphere by any other dimension
---
Dilip D'Souza

It's a constant battle. After every meal, we take the dishes off the dining
table and hope to fit them into a fridge that already looks full. We
usually manage it somehow, though it's hard. But every time, I wish the
dishes were square rather than circular. That way, we'd fit more of them
more easily into the fridge.

Though there are reasons to make dishes circular rather than square. They
are structurally more sound, for one thing. But more important: for a given
capacity, a square container needs over 13% more material than a round one
does.

Which means my problem of packing those round boxes in is likely to
persist. No complaints, though. After all, plenty of mathematicians have
wrestled with the problem of packing, to the extent that it is a well-known
and widely-investigated area of mathematical inquiry. And just last week, a
Ukrainian mathematician called Maryna Viazovska won a Fields Medal for her
work with packing.

It's not often that I can see a connection between what goes in my fridge
and a Fields winner. Though let it be said, the connection is tenuous.
Viazovska's work is not just far more intricate, it involves other
dimensions altogether.

Let me try to explain what I mean by that. Start with one-dimensional
geometry - a line 10cm long. If I gave you several 1cm line segments, how
many can you "pack" onto the longer line without overlap? Easy: ten of
them, end to end. You'll have covered the entire line, or 100%.

Nothing really interesting there. Now think of a two-dimensional space.
Consider a square table that's 1m on a side. I have a number of circular
coasters, each 10cm in diameter. I want to lay them out on the table, as
closely placed as possible with no overlap. How many coasters can I place?

Easy again. Here's one arrangement: One row of ten coasters will go from
one edge of the table to the opposite edge, and I can place ten such rows.
That is, I can "pack" this table-top with 100 round coasters. What fraction
of the total area of the table-top have my 100 coasters covered? Well, the
table-top is 1 square metre, or 10,000 sqcm. Each coaster has a radius of
5cm, which gives it an area of 25π, or about 78.54 sqcm. 100 of those cover
an area of 7854 sqcm, 78.54% of the table-top. (In contrast, 100 perfectly
square coasters - remember my fridge yearnings? - each 10cm by 10cm, would
have covered 100%.)

But you can improve on my 78.54%. After placing the first row, don't line
up the second so each coaster is directly below another, as I did above.
Instead, shift it slightly so each coaster nestles in the space between two
coasters immediately above. Only nine will fit in that row. Place the third
row similarly, and it will hold ten again. Continue this way - a
"honeycomb" arrangement, each coaster touching six others - and you will
fit 11 rows on the table. Some basic geometry will actually prove that.
These alternating rows of ten and nine coasters better my count of 100
coasters - this arrangement takes in 105, for about 8247 sqcm, or 82.47% of
the table. (With a more precise mathematical definition, this "packing
density" in 2-D space is actually just over 90%.)

Move to three dimensions now. No doubt you've seen fruit vendors stack
oranges or watermelons, invariably in the shape of a pyramid. If you take a
hollow pyramid and pack it with spherical watermelons of the same size,
you'll find that when you can pack no more in, you've used a little less
than 75% of the pyramid's volume. The celebrated 17th Century German
astronomer Johannes Kepler was intrigued by the problem of packing spheres.
He suggested that this pyramid structure is the most efficient method,
meaning that 75% can't be bettered. It wasn't until 1998 that his
conjecture was proved.

So we've gone from one to two to three dimensions, and our packing density
has sunk to under 75%. This is where Viazovska comes in. She works in
spaces of dimensions higher than three - conceptually and imaginatively, of
course, because in reality we are confined to our three-dimensional world.
What's the most efficient way to pack spheres - or really, sphere-like
conceptual objects - in those higher dimensions?

[Goanet] PORTUGUESE PASSPORT EFFECT ON GOA POLLS

PORTUGUESE PASSPORT
EFFECT ON GOA POLLS

The Portuguese government in their abundant largesse has to be praised for
having kept a window of opportunity, so that sons and daughters and
grandsons and granddaughters of those whose birth were registered in Goa on
or before 19th December, 1961 could acquire Portuguese nationality and thus
find lucrative employment in especially the United Kingdom as well as to a
certain extent, in France. Several tens of thousands of Goan youth are now
employed in Europe and they mostly hail from South Goa as well as places
such as Siridao, Agasaim, Santa Cruz and Merces in particular.
However, alas, since these Portuguese passport holders relinquished the
right to vote in Goa on surrendering their Indian passports, by a
conservative estimate, in the past 15-20 years about 4-5 lakh names have
been deleted from the electoral rolls in Goa with the result that a
sizeable percentage of the Goan electorate has shrunk. Make no mistake
about it, these 4-5 lakh voters were mostly supporters of the Congress in
Goa and so the support base of the Congress has reduced considerably thus
resulting in the defeat of the Congress even though Congress till the 2017
Assembly polls managed to garner 17 MLAs. It is very difficult to apportion
responsibility and blame for this turn of events because the youth who
chose to migrate to Europe in particular were not able to find gainful
employment in Goa and thus were left with no other choice then to acquire
Portuguese nationality and thus earn their livelihoods in foreign shores.
