...by latching on to my word "traditional" while not engaging with the
actual content.

It should have been clear that "traditional" was meant in the sense of
"accepted." At any rate, I hereby amend "traditional" to "accepted."

The hypocrisy of the liberals the world over is a sight to behold.

When "borders" are convenient, they are willing to initiate World War 3
with the potential for nuclear warfare as is the case now with Ukraine.
Ukraine's borders are sacred, we cannot allow anyone to defile them. But
defending the borders of their own backyard? No sir, that is
racist/xenophobic. We'll sacrifice our peasants, our towns, cities (except
our homes in Martha's Vineyard) to help the huddled masses from distant
lands and all the rapists, the bacha-baazi-ists and goat-fuckers who come
along for the ride.

PS: I seem to have resuscitated Goanet. Do I now get a puff piece in the

[Goanet] Rajan Parrikar's 'traditionalist' views

2022-10-29 Thread Patrice Riemens

Hola Aloha,

The pb with Rajan Parrikar's 'traditionalist' views, e.g. on national
governments vs globalist governace - if there is any such thing - is you can
subsume all of them in the header 'the invention of tradition', with other
words, many things hold to be of more or less permanent, age old nature turn
out to have neen, indeed, 'invented' much more recently, nation states, for
instance, which are not only very 'Western' creations - they are suposed to
have arisen from the Peace of Westphaly (1648), but have in fact really
'gelled' only after the First World War. Remember that before that time
passports existed only for the very privileged classes (my grand father had
one) and was meant as a protection for its holder rather than to authorise
international travel, which anyone could undertake, undocumented, but then
putting oneself at the mercy of foreign authorities. As far as Goa is
concerned, under Portuguese rule, it could have been 'overrun' by Angolese,
Mozambicans, Cabo Verdese, and even Brazilians, plus any number of other
'nationalities' if it had been an attractive place to be/settle then, as
apparently it is nowadays.

Ciao Ciao, p+7D!

Subject: Giorgia Meloni: “We are the heirs of St. Benedict"
Roberto de Mattei says that the mission of the Church and of the Vicar
of Christ on earth is to recall the saving truths that the world ignores
or despises.
But what are these 'saving truths'? Who are being saved and from what?
Can your writers elaborate?

And does your 'world' include the non-Catholics and non-Christians?
And as for the Vicars of Christ, how many were holy & worthy leaders?
It may be worth going back in history. Be prepared to be surprised and
even shocked.

Among the references consulted were the Catholic Encyclopedia and Peter
de Rosa's Vicars of Christ (1994).
The 10th century Popes were in a class by themselves. The first pope of
that century was Benedict IV (900-03. His successor, Leo V, reigned for
just month when he was seized and imprisoned by a usurper, Cardinal
Christopher. Meanwhile, Cardinal Sergius got both Leo and Christopher
merdered and their leader became Pope Sergius III in 904.

Sergius had Pope Formosus, now dead 10 years, re-exhumed and condemned
once again. The corpse was then beheaded, three more fingers cut off and
thrown into the river Tiber. The headless body was caught in a
fisherman's net and returned a second time to St Peter's.
At the time, Senator Theophylact, civic head of the city, had supported
Sergius' party and the family (wife Theodora and daughters Marozia and
Theodora came to know Pope Sergius well. He seduced Marozia and made her
his mistress around 905 (the year after he became Pope when she was 15
and he was 45.

He soon had a son by him who was later to become Pope.

Meanwhile, Theodora's influence had grown. One of her lovers was
reportedly John, Bishop of Bolgna. Under her influence, he rose to
become Bishop of Ravenna. The Bishop of Ravenna became Pope John X in
914.

(more to follow).

[Goanet] THIS CHEAP VERBAL TAMASHA BETWEEN MINISTERS MUST END

2022-10-29 Thread Aires Rodrigues
The current pot-shots in public by some of the Goa Ministers against each
other are in utter bad taste. And the public are watching in despair these
cheap intrigues among Ministers.

The Cabinet has to function in unionism, and it is the collective
responsibility of every Minister to work as a team and speak in one voice.
This feuding, mudslinging and backstabbing in a free for all environment
proves how divided this Government is on most issues. Any policy
implemented as a result lacks the full agreement of the government and will
be even more controversial for the people to accept and follow. Any show of
unity has been for the camera and the media not based on any conviction or
confidence in government policy.

The war of words between Ministers themselves and that too now all in
public domain only points out that Good Governance has gone for a toss. Any
differences of opinion or views should be all thrashed out by the Ministers
at the cabinet meeting and should never spill out on the streets. This
verbal Minister v/s Minister bashing and taunting goes against the decorum
and sanity that must otherwise prevail.

It is a sad fact that the Government and the ruling BJP party is now a
patchwork of individuals including various rejects from other parties who
have been lured with a high financial reward and promises of high office.
This jostling for power by members of a fragmented Government who only care
about their personal wellbeing could well be a major cause for this
pathetic behaviour! This was inevitable given what a mixed and odd bunch
our Ministers are! Doubtlessly, all this reflects poorly on the leadership
of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant. He is in the Chair, in power but not in
control. For the people of Goa, the nightmare continues, and it is clearly
a challenging time of ‘Bhivpachi garaz asa’.

Various leaders of international repute have over the centuries used the
phrase ‘United we stand, divided we fall’ to garner support, a phrase our
Government ministers should learn and implement in all their dealings.

No, it most certainly is not "just a way of life." That is a
kindergarten-level understanding of Hindu Dharma.

To some gambling in the casinos in the Mandovi is a "way of life." To Osama
bin Laden and his fellow jihadis, terrorism is a "way of life." To Pele,
football was a "way of life." To the Leftwing Wokes, Wokeism is a "way of

as a descriptor for Hinduism doesn't tell anyone anything. Unfortunately
many Hindus themselves unthinkingly parrot this nonsense.

[Goanet] Good Bamon and Bad Bamon

by Rajan Parrikar

The progressive Leftwing brigade never tires of telling us that Goa was
betrayed by Timappa, the bamon. This serves 2 of their primary goals. One,
absolve the Portuguese. Two, and this is central, use Timappa to crap on
the bamons and Hindus of today. You see, in the progressive swamp, all the
ills of Hindu society flow directly from the oppressive regime established
by the bamons.

Therefore, Timappa = Bad Bamon, very bad bamon. Note that during Timappa’s
time there were bamons, there was varna & jati, but there was no “caste,” a
perversion of the societal phenomenon the Portuguese didn’t understand.
Timappa is the stick the progressives try to hit current-day Goan Hindus -
bamons especially - with.

On the other hand, Damodar Mauzo has been crowned the Good Bamon. Why?
Because he takes potshots at the same Hindus and Hindu practices the
progressive gits have long despised.

Yesterday I was asked by someone who is aware of my nativist feelings for
Goa what I thought of Rishi Sunak’s elevation to the PMship of the UK and
if I was proud of a Hindu ascending to the post.

My response - if I were a Niz Britonkar, I wouldn’t like it. Internal
consistency in this matter is important. There are crucial differences with
the Goa situation though. The most important being, we in Goa have no
mechanism to keep people out, or to filter people who get to come in and
settle here. The UK does (at least in theory). It is a free-for-all in Goa.
Outsiders have defiled our land, grabbed our land, crapped on our land, no
questions asked. To be sure, with the help of Goan collaborators.

As for his Hindu credentials - if he’s true to his Hindu values, Dharma
dictates that he work for the benefit of his country, which is not India.
He may have to take tough decisions for his country to the detriment of
India’s interests. His universal Hindu values would require him to do what
is right for HIS country. I don’t see why Indian Hindus should expect
special consideration just because Sunak is Hindu. As a fundamentalist
Hindu, my biggest gripe about Manohar P was how unHindu he was while
pretending to be the flag-bearer of Hindu values.

[Goanet] Goa Diary, October 29, 2022: On "Saving Goa"

2022-10-29 Thread Rajan Parrikar
What does “saving Goa” mean any more?

The whole idea is absurd.

Right now the best that can be done is, you “save” your own vaddo from yet
another hotel or construction project. That is, if your vaddo is not
already under the control of Mr. Singh or Mr. Bansal from Delhi. Your
larger village has already succumbed to the ximitt (concrete) virus.
Dilliwallahs, Andhras, Biharis, Rajasthanis, UP bhaiyyas are crawling all
over what used to be your cherished coconut orchards and ‘baans’ by the
paddy field.

What exactly are we “saving” now?

It is just posturing. There are the professional ‘activists,’ who will be
in it until 3000 CE, and there’ll be the new activists - bhaile, who fled
their toilet towns, then darkened our Goa, and now suddenly realize the
place is headed the same way as their original toilet town.

In Bombay they are still “saving” but the theatre of activity of this
“saving” is spread only over a few square feet. Like, say, they may talk
about “saving” the Banganga tank from an unscrupulous builder.

In a few years, you won’t even get to save your vaddo. It’ll be "saving"
your village well that will absorb all your activist itch.

Thank you, India and Indians, for NOTHING.

Thank you for the counterpoint.

I very much hew to the traditional view of what a country is. The goal of
the elected leadership of a country should be first and foremost the
protection and furtherance of the interests of its own citizens, not to be
globalists working for some imaginery world governent. They are sent there
to work for the people who voted for them, not for people in distant lands
or people who illegally overrun the border and demand relief.

Yes, in today's connected world, what you do in your country may affect
those outside that country's borders. On those specific issues, we already
have time-tested mechanisms of diplomacy and inter-governmental relations
for problem-solving. Nobody is calling for walling ourselves off and
sealing us from the rest of the world.

First of all, I spent many, many years - 16 and counting - photographing
Goa, traveling the length and breadth of Goa, photographing its surviving
beauty as well as its takedown. I now have an extensive photographic
database of imagery from Goa that nobody else has (not even your and my
favourite JoeGoaUK). It is both technically and aesthetically of a very
high standard, not the point-camera-and-pray activity that you are
accustomed to.

Almost every aspect of Goa has been covered in my work - landscape,
culture, spiritual heritage, and Goans themselves. Also included is a
documentation of the environmental destruction of Goa. A large body of my
work still remains unpublished and will hopefully see the light of day in
the coming months and years. The best part is, I did it for my pleasure,
not for monetary gain or for some stupid award.

So on the facts, your premise born out of malice is wrong: I spent a great
deal of time in Goa. And by God’s grace I spent, and continue to spend, a
great deal of time in Iceland as well, one of the last paradises on the
planet. For these blessings I thank Lord Ganapati, Lord Shiva, and Lord
Krishna every single day.

As usual, you are blowing smoke. And you don’t have the decency to admit it.

If you had not had your nose in the gutter, if you hadn’t spent time
smearing people, if you had been a real journalist instead of pretending to
be one, you would have known about my work in Goa.

Now - “saving” Goa is a big, big task. (Goa cannot be "saved" anymore; it
is gone for good). No one person, however well-intentioned and devoted, can
do it alone. I rolled up my sleeves and joined the serving hands. I spent a
lot of my time, effort, and money on being part of a small community doing
my best. After giving a number of years to the mission, I withdrew because
unlike professional ‘activists’, those scam artists, who are in it in
perpetuity, I had the good sense to know my limits. We failed, but at least
I gave it an honest shot. You, on the other hand, stood on the sidelines
throwing impotent barbs at us.

You did nothing, you fraud, except cast aspersions on people who stepped
into the arena. A line from an era long past comes to mind: Have you no
sense of decency, sir, at long last?

Best,

A day late and a dollar short. Slam the barn door shut after the horse has
bolted. Take your pick of idiom.

In 2008 I went to 40+ panchayats via RTI and got documents of all the
construction taking place in their jurisdictions. On my time and coin. The
papers from Old Goa showed extensive violations and construction right
around the historic monuments. I recall one such violation was within a
stone's throw of Mary Mount Chapel, agricultural land converted to
settlement for villas or an apartment complex. I forget the specifics now.

Other than a handful - such as Soter D'Souza and Matanhy Saldanha - nobody
was interested in pursuing any of this. Digambar was the CM and Manohar was
in the opposition. Zero interest from either of them (well, they were in on
the scam). Dimwit Dr. Oscar Rebello was preening as the hero of the day.
There were no articles in any newspapers nor puff pieces written on us
(thank God!). Au contraire. Gasbags like Miguel Braganza, sitting on his
corpulent ass, would snipe at us every other day here on Goanet. I think he
had a puff piece devoted to him recently, didn't he?

When I left for California in mid-2008, I had to dispose of a trunkful of
documents collected from the panchayats. It would have taken a staff
working full-time to process these. The magnitude of illegalities and fraud
was staggering.

Fast forward to 2022. We'll have these minor victories made to look like
something significant. And we'll have a VM quoting some minor activist
(usually an outsider) nobody in Goa cares about as a crusader for Goa. All
this is one giant effing joke.

[Goanet] ABC of Alexyz (and Marialena) - O Heraldo, 28/10/202roh2

2022-10-29 Thread V M
https://www.heraldgoa.in/Cafe/ABC-of-Alexyz-and-Marialena/195879

50 strong, sparkling years into her professional career at the epicentre of
the western classical music world in Vienna, you would never have expected
to find Marialena Fernandes playing her heart out by the roadside in
Siolim. Nonetheless, that’s where this wonderfully elegant pianist chose to
be on Wednesday evening earlier this week. Fighting hard against noise from
incessant traffic, she – and others - brought beautiful music to this
highly unlikely setting, under the gaze of what must surely be the only
life-sized statue of Ludwig von Beethoven anywhere outside Europe.

There are so many singularities involved here, that we must pause to
understand them. This concert in Gaunsavaddo was the first post-pandemic *Noite
de Beethoven*, organized by the brave little Friends of Beethoven
collective which constituted itself in 2007. The location is because of the
idiosyncratic monument, which was unveiled in 1976, and bears this
dedication: “The statue of the great master has been presented to Lydia
Leopoldina Sousa Pinto, born in Rio de Janeiro South America and was
unveiled by Eugenia Ignatievna Sousa Pinto (nee Napolova).” The original
*Siolkar* patron, Manuel Sousa Pinto – who spent his own life mostly in
Brazil – added this quirky coda: “Like every Goan, Ludwig was born with a
fiddle in his hand. Thank God he is now here, quite at home in my beloved
Goa.”

Beethoven in Siolim is not that strange if you consider the cultural
history of this part of Goa, now on the verge of obliteration by the
tsunami of concrete being forced upon Gaunsavaddo, and pretty much every
village across the length and breadth of India’s smallest state. What is
being lost – literally blasted apart – is no less than who we are: an
outward-looking people who have embraced the world for what is great in it,
whether Beethoven or the Beatles. Siolim is also the home of India’s pop
icon Remo, the one-of-a-kind trumpeter/novelist Reginald Fernandes (who
wrote hundreds of Konkani *romanses* while performing all over the
country), and the hugely famous Joaozinho Carvalho of the legendary Johnson
& His Jolly Boys.

There were very many traffic sounds intervening at Wednesday’s concert,
which is par for the course in the post-pandemic Bardez bedlam, as the
whole of North Goa is under relentless pressure from newly moneyed
urbanites fleeing the rest of India. And yet, onstage, there was an
unmistakable flicker of the old, familiar, gracious cosmopolitanism. New
mother Kim Costa gave an assured performance in German, and Sonia Shirsat –
as usual - blew us all away with truly gorgeous fados. Unfortunately,
personal commitments compelled me to miss half the programme, but I was
lucky to be there when Marialena Fernandes got up to talk about Austria and
India and her way of bringing them together, and belonging to both.

“I call her Mariavienna,” says ever-smiling artist Alexyz Fernandes, the
quietly formidable force behind the Friends of Beethoven. He told me the
pianist was his classmate at St. Xavier’s College in Bombay in the late
1960s: “She was a prodigy. Her mother Hetty Fernandes was a popular music
teacher, and Marialena imbibed her passion for music in her mother’s womb.
In our college years, she was a pulsating live wire. Vibrant, vivacious, a
gorgeous gal bursting with energy in all the college culture clubs. Her
forte was obviously music, in which she was a shining star in her own

simply no doubt that she would one day achieve the iconic pedestal status
with which she is now acclaimed.”

With pride in the accomplishments of his dear friend of so many decades,
Alexyz recounted how “soon after her graduation Marialena won a scholarship
to Germany via a competition promoted by the Max Mueller Institute in
Bombay, for which she had played the music of Ludwig van Beethoven. From
Germany she moved to Vienna at the invitation of her music professor, where
she lives in the awesome ambience of music she was born to play.” While

seek better opportunities – there were others who were moved by another
kind of idealism. This is the tight-knit band of Claude and Norma Alvares,
and Alexyz himself, who chose to commit to the grassroots, and left the big
city for almost unimaginably somnolent Goa in the early 1970s. Just look at
what they have accomplished for all of us in the intervening years – so
much good, such benefit to environment, culture and society.

In this regard, there may be no more unassuming powerhouse anywhere than
Alexyz. This gentle and supremely gentlemanly artist has produced an
historic body of work, while incalculably enriching his community in small
and very big ways that have never been properly recognized. Staying rooted
to his ancestral
