*On a sidebar note, I happened to attend a Kenya Society event @ The **Kenya
High Commission *

*( London)  last Thursday evening **.**In the spotlight was Sharad S Rao, a
Kenyan who has served as the chairman of the Kenya Judges and Magistrates
Vetting Board since September 2011. He was also one of 12 International
Judges who sat on the dispute resolution bench at the Court of Arbitration
for Sports at the 2012 London Olympics games.He acted in a similar role at
the Athens and Beijing Olympics Games.*

 *His talk was on "Kenya Then and Now and the Asians Role in it" Pio Gama
Pinto and Joseph Murumbi's life contributions were noted and celebrated too
among many others like Makhan Singh and such.*


*One is once more reminded that thanks to  Braz Menezes’ Matata Trilogy ,
Selma Carvalho's and Mervyn Maciel's brace of books apiece .. a slice of
Goan,Kenyan/East African Asian/’Africander’  history and legacy is thus

Last year we hosted 'Chats with Goan Authors' sessions where visitors had a
rare opportunity to meet UK based writers such as Selma Carvalho ( Into The
Diaspora Wilderness‘, ‘A Railway Runs Through It’ and Mervyn Maciel ( ‘From
Mzee to Mtoto : Story of My Life’s Safari’ , ‘Bwana Karani’ )

This time around in addition to a range of popular books on Goan cuisine,
Konkani language primers, art, novels, sociology etc. we are 'test driving'
a session or two on...

The basics of 'Amchi bas'/ KONKANI aimed mainly at locally raised, younger
generations of Goan heritage , but really anyone who wishes to learn a few
words or simply brush up and/or perhaps learn a new word or two for
starters.

TIME SLOTS

Informal 20 minute long 'drop-in' sessions on the basics of spoken Konkani,
with our gracious volunteer facilitators Maria Goretti Fernandes , Gemma
Fernandes and Louis Gomes are at 2, 3 and 4pm

NB: Facilitators give up precious quality time to do this, when they could
be enjoying themselves on this rare annual occasion with friends and family
;when we all come together under the broad 'umbrella' ('sotri') of the GOA

Any writing on East Africa is of immense interest, for it is in East
Africa, that the Goan first turned into an explorer and budding
anthropologist with a curious interest in unfamiliar people. It comes as no
surprise, that when that flamboyant British explorer Sir Richard Burton set
out in 1857, with Captain Hanning Speke, to discover the source of the Nile
in Africa, he had with him two Goan cooks, Valentino Rodrigues and Caetano
Andrade, who proved to be extremely valuable and hardy. Not only did
Valentino often assume a leadership role during the expedition having
learnt in no time a smattering of Swahili, but he had also learnt to use
the chronometer and thermometer.

Mervyn Maciel’s knowledge of Africa is almost encyclopaedic and his own
anthropological lens is obvious throughout the book, as in this paragraph:
‘Very much on the same pattern as Lodwar, and because our lives lacked the
variety of a safari, the Goan staff was encouraged to go out into the
interior of the district to relax. We sometimes spent times picnicking at
Lake Paradise, home to herds of elephant and buffalo, and also further
afield to Loiyangalani on the lakeshore where we had to cross the Chalbi
desert. I enjoyed these trips immensely as it gave me an opportunity to
explore the outdoors, meet local chiefs and tribesmen and also engage in
some sandgrouse shooting at the oasis of North Horr. The El Molo tribe live
along the shores of the lake at Loiyangalani and are reputed to be very
poor, living on the lake’s Nile perch and tilapia, and government handouts.’

I respect the quality of thoughts and observations of most concerned in
this side bar cyber ('imbroglio'-embroil-io) 'and echo those in particular
of Victor Rangel Ribeiro ,Mervyn Maciel ,Roland etc

I would like to think that as Goans; our identities are constantly evolving

The magic of connectivity such as we enjoy today is that it can also be
used to 'crowd source'  relevant information on our 'his/her stories',  to
continue to enrich the fabric of what we already know and are perhaps  just
beginning to glean about ourselves.

Should we then not; rather best practice  'Wisdom of the Crowd' focus on
using it as just such a +ve tool ?

There is inalienably and unquestionably ; a space for critical observation
,however much depends on what and how and to what intent one endeavours the
same

Personally ;I and many such as myself  : are  probably placed in a much
more advantageous space as  East African born Goans  to have penned such a
book (albeit I was a tad young when my folks moved back to Goa post Kenyan
independence  )

Still : Have I written a book/s reflecting some of these  experiences (
 asYET :) ) unlike say Mervyn Maciel ,Braz Menezes or Selma Carvalho etc.
have  ?

 NO !

Nuff said . Keep on keeping on SELMA @ Pareto Principle . We look forward

PS:Long years ago;  A Mzee or elder from the Swahili  once told me these as
a 'mtoto' or child and though I paraphrase to some extent I am always in
awe of its main and meta messages

'It matters not one iota what you do : people will find fault
irrespective.,so let him or her who has not erred throw the first sharp
stone  , in 'holier than thou' anger or nadequacy /insecurity or jealousy
 ad infinitum/nauseam .

AND

' Wise men/women speak when and because they have SOMETHING to say ; Fools

 unemployment allowances. But the rules changed mid 90s. There came
 ‘habitual residency test’, ‘means test’ etc and as
