Re: [Goanet] 35th Tiatr Competition - Fulantlem Moum
Mogall Joe, Thanks for all the tiatr competition reviews with pics...it makes me feel as if I have seen the tiatr live. One point that I want to let you know regarding the Non-Christians actors in tiatrs mostly Konkne (Hindu Brothers). Well this is not new..our Hindu brothers always used to take part in the Konkani tiatrs..I remember my school days when we used to have our annual day at St. Boscos in Chinchinim...we always used to have a Konkani Tiatr.. yes a konkani tiatr..with konkani songs and a 6 act konkani play...which was mostly translated from a Natok... I remember our sirs..Mr. Prakash Narvenkar and Raikar used to write, direct and act in the konkani tiatrs...besides the senior students. Mr. Fidelis Pereira our head master took care of the songs..and our band was Radio Sereneders.. a top wedding band in Goa (salcette ) those days. I did take part and sang one song...the other hindu brother was Venkatesh Hegde now Dr. in Margao who used to always take part in the tiatrs. There was no ticket but just a a 4 page paper with programme details n cost was just Re 1/-. We always had a full crowd compared to the other school tiatrs, as ours was like a professional tiatr. So even those days our Hindu brothers took part in the tiatr and their acting was well appreciated.. Dev borem korum Eddie Verdes - Original Message - From: JoeGoaUk Sent: Friday, September 25, 2009 1:45 PM Subject: [Goanet] 35th Tiatr Competition - Fulantlem Moum I like the tiatr, songs and acting. Almost Half of the actors were non-Christians. Infact, JoeGoaUk’s top prize for best actor goes jointly to Sanferd (Samir Shabi Gadekar) and Eudora (Meenakxi Narvekar). They really did not sound like Hindus. Tiatr directed by Sandeep Kalangutkar and the band by Agnelo Dias. The other main non-Christians actors were Comedy Teacher- Madam Braganza – Madhuri Shetkar, Comedy -Sir Tension, Dnyanesh Parsekar etc. . Click here. http://in.yahoo.com/trynew
[Goanet] H.Britton
Konkani Stage has lost another great singer and actor. H.Britton used to sing humourous songs, mostly 'songs on Cheddvam/bailo'. He had his own style of singing songs dressed as a female, as you can see the pic on one of the cassette covers. at http://edskantaram.blogspot.com/ Every song that he sang for tiatr, he was called again n again. Besides his songs on Cheddvam, he also sang Mandos and songs which had a message for Goans. In his song Uxear Goemkar, he praised Remo, Mangeshkar sisters, Lorna and Varsha Usgaokar and urged the Govt. to help the goan artists. H.Britton has composed n sung 100 of songs..a few of the albums that I have are Dubau, Suvoim, Bhorti ani Sukhti, Goem Konnachem, No Problem, Rautam Tuca, Made in Goa, album of old konkani film songs. He also sang for other tiatrists albums and his duet partners were mostly, Sucurine and Betty Naz, besides he also sang with Lorna and Rita Rose. H.Britton will be remembered for his songs specially 'Bandra Festak' a song on Bandra feast fair, a love song on Marialinah, Bus Conductor - typical Bombay BEST Conductor, Pandu Lampiaum - as Goan Kanknakar who visits Bombay, Mumbai Pahli - his first visit to Bombay City, Habibi - Arabic, English Konkani love song, Pilot Irmao - a duet with Sucurine as a Pilot, Kazarachem Utor - a famous mando, and Election Corruption - after his return from Gulf witnessing the Goan Election...and many more hit songs.. My deepest sympathies to his family, May his soul rest in Peace! H.Brittons famous songs can be heard on the net...we will miss you H.Britton. Edward Verdes http://edskantaram.blogspot.com/

[Goanet] Songs of Lorna
While we are discussing about 25,000 konkani songs..does anyone know the number of songs Lorna has to her credit...recently I read somewhere she said that she sang thousands of songs...can you guess how many thousands?..I have not formed a data base yet...but I should have around 200 songs Edward Verdes http://edskantaram.blogspot.com/
Re: [Goanet] Svettor Kori
FN/Francis, I had given the breakup of 4000 songs that I have compiled..which are mostly from the 80's onwards with a few from 60's n 70's. I have not yet made complete list of these 4000 songs. I know it was possible, when I was entering each title in the mp3 properties. This is time consuming, you have to have the song titles, album titles and the singers names too.. sometimes the singers names n titles are not available then u have title it yrself after listening to the song ...like I did for the Alfred Rose 300 plus songs. It took me 3 years to compile and list the songs. Here I am struggling to form a list of 4000 songs and you are asking 25,000 songs? which is highly impossible. Right now I dont have the time to make the list of 4000 songs, my first priority is to digitalise the 150 audio cassettes that I have for my personal use. Each audio cassette takes 2-3 hrs and you have to have free time for that. Probably once I have all the songs then I can go for the list I think the newly formed Tiatr Academy, with tiatrist as members can take this project of compiling all the konkani songs, that are with the tiatrist and AIR. Dev borem korum Eddie - Original Message - Francis, Agreed, this is too vast a project for one person to undertake. How about a collaborative project then? Wonder if anyone else would be interested. It could be on the lines of the (still rather modest) http://wikiwikiweb.de/MailingListsInIndia or even an attempt to list more Goa-related books on the Open Library http://openlibrary.org/search?q=Goa The comparison between a listing of publicly-known song titles, and a list of email addresses where privacy issues are involved is, to my mind, not appropriate. There are two separate issues here as I see it (i) the amount of work involved (ii) the openness to sharing information. Both are legimitate concerns, but are separate issues imho. FN 2009/9/22 Francis Rodrigues fcarodrig...@hotmail.com: You gotta be kidding me, right?? Post 25,000+ song-titles on Goanet?? Perhaps Eddie Verdes or Isidor Dantas might be able to help you out here (having confirmed the figure), one or other may have the time to post! Even if 25 titles were posted every day, you're still looking at 1,000 posts i.e. 3 YEARS of unceasing DAILY POSTS! I think only JoeGoaUK has that kind of horsepower and work-rate!:-) I'll make you a deal though - my song-list database in exchange for your Goanet mailing-list database (your list is half our size). Both equally sacrosanct! Do we have a deal?!:-)
Re: [Goanet] Swetor kori/Alfred Rose Songs
FN, I dont know from where Francis got the figure of 25,000 Konkani songs..but I think it should be more than 25,000 songs if you count on till date. As I said on my blog that I have a collection of over 4000 Konkani songs..let me once again give a break upthis 4000 konkani songs are now on 4 DVDS (also on external/internal hard disk) in mp3 format. Each DVD has 4.38GB (DVD capacity is 4.7GB)..I may be able to add more songs...after I digitalise my audio cassettes...but these songs are mostly from 1980 onwards, part from 70's ...and these are selective. I missed out many albums in betweenso I feel till date there should be more 25,000 songs. Now regarding Alfred Rose 5000 songs. Isidore Dantas wrote the profile of Alfi: Besides tiatrs, Alfred has performed six musical shows, composed and sung five thousand songs out of which fifteen hundred are in English in his soprano voice, has 400 extended and long playing records and 39 audio cassettes. http://www.goa-world.com/goa/tiatr/kingofmelody.htm So probably Alfi composed and sang 3500 konkani songs for tiatrs. It is said that Alfred Rose has produced 40 audio cassettes, that last audio that I have is AR40 and this was released in 1996/97 after Michael Jackons show in Bombaythere is one song which he sings..King of Pop MJ.so .almost over 400 songs I have 310 songs of Alfred Rose...which includes 170 solo songs of Alfred the rest of the songs which he sang with Rita, children and other tiatrists. This huge compilation is due to help of my friends, Renson Menezes, Agnelo F, and Andrea Alvares. The song titles along with the album titles are available with me in excel for my personal use only. There are still many Vinyl records of AR which are with Akashwani Goa, but I doubt if the Govt. or Academy will do anything about it. If anyone has the old Vinyl records/audio cassettes of AR or other Konkani tiatrist please get in touch with me. Dev Borem Korum Eddie Verdes To: Goa's premiere mailing list, estb. 1994! goanet@lists.goanet.org While tuned in to the evergreen Konkani hit song 'Swetor kori' (apparently also known by other titles) via AIR FM Rainbow at around 1.45 pm on a Friday post-lunch afternoon here, a thought Francis Rodrigues, while release his Greatest Konkani Song Hits recently, made this comment. He said the body of popular Konkani songs (cantaram) was made up of some 25,000 songs. Of these, he said, Alfred Rose alone sang an amazing 5,000. Would anyone know if these figures reflect reality? Is there some way the songs could be counted? Any possibility of an online database being created, even if only of the names of these songs? [Goanet] Indians 'welcome' in Goa now
Indians 'welcome' in Goa now http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/news/city/goa/Indians-welcome-in-Goa-now/articleshow/5004676.cms PANAJI: It’s an open secret that nobody really wanted to acknowledge, until now. Racial discrimination against Goans and Indian tourists by beach shacks has happened for years, but now the government wants to introduce a rule to prevent it. Goa’s tourism department will add a clause to its shacks’ policy for the coming season saying their licences could be cancelled if they profile customers on the basis of race. ‘‘Such cases have now started to come out into the open,’’ tourism director Swapnil Naik told TOI. ‘‘We will add a clause in the shacks’ policy that discrimination against nationality and race will be treated as condition enough for cancellation of licence,’’ he said. Nearly 90% of the people employed by beach shacks and coastal restaurants are non-Goan, belonging to Maharashtra and as far afield as West Bengal, Bihar and Nepal. On many beaches shack owners brazenly favour dollar-powered tourists. The simmering resentment erupted last week after a Goa University professor claimed discrimination by a well-known restaurant at Calangute beach. On Morjim, Ashwem and Mandrem beaches, Russians often outnumber locals and Indian tourists. ‘‘Shacks are being subletted by Goans to Russians, who have turned the area into their country,” says Fritzie Moraes Lobo, a resident of Mapusa and president of Citizens Rapid Action Committee. ‘‘We were physically stopped by two persons at the entrance of the restaurant. We wanted to sit inside the restaurant, but were told to sit somewhere else out on the porch. This, despite there being empty tables in the restaurant. Foreigners, who arrived after us, were welcomed with open arms,’’ the professor said, not wishing to be named for several reasons. Naik said the government could intervene only in places where government land on beaches were concerned. ‘‘The clause will apply to beach shacks on land owned by the tourism department. With regard to shacks on private property and restaurants, I will have to consult legal advice,’’ he said. Shack and restaurant owners, speaking on condition of anonymity, said they have reasons for racial profiling. ‘‘Indian tourists do not know how to handle themselves when they see white people. Drunk Indian tourists do not know how to behave when they see white women. They ogle, make passes and even attempt to molest and proposition them. It is a disgrace and embarrassment for all of us,’’ a shack owner said. Edward Verdes http://edskantaram.blogspot.com/

[Goanet] No 'black money' statistics exist: Swiss banks
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/news/india/No-black-money-statistics-exist-Swiss-banks/articleshow/5005874.cms NEW DELHI: Amid claims from various quarters that Indians have stashed away thousands of crores in secret bank accounts in Switzerland, the Swiss banks have asserted that any statistics about black money simply do not exist. Various political parties and other groups have been claiming that the black money stashed away in Swiss banks by Indians exceed one trillion dollars. These statistics, which put Indians at the top in terms of deposits in Swiss banks, have often been quoted to global institutions and sometimes even to the Swiss National Bank, the central bank of the country. Seeking to demolish the myth over these figures being circulated as gospel truth, a top official at the Swiss Bankers' Association told PTI from Basel that there were no truth at all in such statistics. Anyone claiming to have such figures should be forced to identify their source and explain the methodology used to produce them, said the SBA's Head of International Communications, James Nason. We take all our statistics from Swiss National Bank and statistics about 'black money' simply do not exist, he added. Nason said he was aware of such figures being quoted to a SBA report on bank deposits in the Swiss banks by people of various nationalities, which put Indians as the biggest depositors there, but asserted that there were no truth in it and it never published any such report. About 18 months ago some mischievous person launched a story on the Internet saying the Swiss Bankers Association had issued a report in 2006 showing the amount of so-called black money deposited in Switzerland by citizens of countries such as India, China, Russia and Ukraine and quoted figures in the billions. The figures were rapidly picked up in the Indian media and in Indian opposition circles, and circulated as gospel truth. However, this story was a complete fabrication. The Swiss Bankers Association never published such a report, Nason noted. These reports have said that Indians had over 1.4 trillion dollars in Swiss banks, followed by Russia (470 billion dollars), UK (390 billion report), Ukraine (100 billion dollar) and China (96 billion dollars) at end of 2006. Nason clarified further that the Swiss National Bank gives out figures for value of securities held in custody accounts for domestic and foreign clients, but no break ups are given on the basis of nationality of foreign clients. The Swiss National Bank gives a figure for the value of securities (mainly bonds and shares) held in custody accounts. At the end of June 2009 the total value was 3,985 billion Swiss francs. This figure is for all clients -- Swiss and foreign institutional, commercial and private clients, Nason said. Edward Verdes http://edskantaram.blogspot.com/
