Bernard Cota etc. Fausto V. da Costa Roland Francis wrote: Pardon my ignorance of the Goan Mando, but it appears to me that I hear today the same mandos I have been hearing from the age I was old enough to appreciate music (make that 5 years old). Haven't any Goans added to the repertoire of that music in the intervening years? Where have all the Goan musicians gone? Have they not been able or skillful enough to have added to the old compositions of our fathers and grandfathers? Have Goan musicians somehow gone brain-dead? The excuse that they have concentrated on other strains for daily living or lucrative purposes does not cut any ice. For example If Remo had made it big on the Indian scene could he not give back something to Goan music? Basilio Magno and peers, hear me? [Goanet] 'DKA's Statement exposes tacit understanding
'DKA's STATEMENT EXPOSES TACIT UNDERSTANDING PANAJI: Konkani Bhasha Mandal president Shridhar Kamat has expressed his fear that an amendment in the Official Language Act to accord equal status to Konkani in Roman script would open the doors to Marathi to be included as well, and said that this was already happening. "The statement made by Wilson Mazarello, President of DKA welcoming the proposition of the CLP, according equal status to Konkani in Roman script and in the same breath saying that there is no objections for the inclusion of Marathi in the act speaks volumes and exposes the tacit understanding between them and the fanatic and the fundamentalist elements within the Marathi leadership" he alleged.Speaking under a unified banner called Konkani Ekvott, which comprises different Konkani organisations and the Goa Hitrakhan Manch, Kamat said that the bid to bring in Marathi was already underway. The KE was represented by Serafino Cotta, KBM's Srhidhar Kamat, Akhil Bharatiya Konkani Parishad's Nagesh Karmali, Catholics for Devanagiri's Fr Jaime Couto and Prof SM Borges, Hitrakhan's Prashant Naik and Jose Lourenco and Asmitai Pratishtan's Arvind Bhatikar and Prof Harischandra Nagvenkar. (News from Gomantak Times) HOW CAN MARATHI BE INCLUDED IN THE ACT?? AND WHY NOT ENGLISH & PORTUGUESE TOO??? IS THIS YOUR STAND DKA??? ___ Goanet mailing list Goanet@lists.goanet.org http://lists.goanet.org/listinfo.cgi/goanet-goanet.org
[Goanet] ROMAN DEAL OF PRATAP NAIK?
ROMI DEAL There are very strong indications that the fanatic Pratap Naik has struck a deal with the RSS Chief, Subhas Velinkar. The RSS brigade and even senior BJP leaders have been making statements that the only languages which deserve to be official languages in Goa are Marathi and Konkani in the Roman script. The objective is to marginalise the secular elements in the Konkani movement who have always strongly condemned the RSS conspiracy to polarise Goa along communal lines. The BJP and the RSS have been extending support to the demand for equal status for Romi Konkani as the official language of the State. Not because they are interested in Romi Konkani but because it serves their purpose of dividing Goa on communal lines. I understand that the deal between Pratap Naik, who has been the most hysterical of those demanding equal official language status for Romi Konkani, is that the RSS and the BJP will extend full support to Romi Konkani. Aparently Parrikar and Velingkar assured Pratap Naik that the BJP would support any amendment to confer equal status to Romi Konkani in the Legislative Assembly. In return, apparently, Pratap Naik has assured Subhash Velingkar that the Romi Konkani leaders will support or at least not oppose the demand for equal status for Marathi. It is unfortunate that the Romi Konkani leaders and even some prominent parish priests have fallen into the RSS trap. I would like to reiterate that the best solution would be to amend the Official Language Act to provide that Romi Konkani along with Marathi shall be used for any or all official purposes, including the knowledge of Konkani for recruitment to government jobs. To meet the legitimate grievances of the Romi Konkaniwadis, it can also be stipulated that they will get equal representation an patronage in all official language bodies. (Stray thoughts by Rajan Narayan in the Goan Observer) FR. NAIK'S CLARIFICATION: Fr. Pratap Naik castigated Mr Rajan Narayan for fomenting confusion associating him with Mr Subhash Velingker stating that the two were hand in glove to pursue the Romi issue and as a quid pro quo support the demand for Marathi as official language. He said that his demand is for Konkani in Roman script with Devanagari . He questioned Mr Narayan -- how could a man ---referring to RSS chief in Goa Mr Subhash Velingker a teacher,- who had in his article called St Francis Xavier "Sant or Saitan" in Sunaparant daily be linked to Fr Pratap Naik? Fr Naik stated that most of the Press resorted to distortion of news and provoked confusion. ___ Goanet mailing list Goanet@lists.goanet.org http://lists.goanet.org/listinfo.cgi/goanet-goanet.org
Re: [Goanet] Goanet Digest, Vol 1, World Sorpotel Day!
Yes, and why not call it a Sorpotel Day? bcoz in Mumbai for this World Goa Day celebration (although last year we celebrated it as 'World Konkani Day') what we have been achieving for the past 4 years is a very good sale of soprotel & san'nas, more than spread Konkani or Goan ethos & culture. [Goanet] Language & Script
Language & Scripts I feel instead of making an amendment by adding "Konkani means Konkani in devanagri & roman script", it will be more logical, if an amendment is possible at this stage, is to delete the sentence "Konkani means Konkani in devanagri script". After all it is the language that matters, and not the script. Later on the issue of the script might get solved automatically or we should leave it to that. No doubt the progress of the language in this case will be slower, however the contribution to Konkani language will be definitely greater than fighting over the script, and dividing the Goans on communal lines. All Goans should strive to sustain the language rather than fight over the scripts, or else we may succeed in having the scripts and loosing the language. Fausto V. Da Costa Godfrey wrote: Mr Bhembre needs to clarify : a) if the use of Roman script should continue what prevents its recognition by way of amendment to OLA 1987? Or better still why not delete from the OLA "Konkani means Konkani in devanagari script ___ Goanet mailing list Goanet@lists.goanet.org http://lists.goanet.org/listinfo.cgi/goanet-goanet.org
