[Goanet] Punjabi Christian reject Goan Bishops in Pakistan

2009-11-23 Thread John DSouza
The above mentioned story carries many false statements.

Firstly, there are still ( thank God) about 10,000 Goans in Pakistan about
9,700 of them  in Karachi alone.

Also, Goans were never helped by the church to migrate to the West. However,
the Protestant churches did help in sending large amounts of Punjabi Christians
to the west under the Special Agricultural Workers ( US SAW Visas program ) of
the mid-70's. Many were also sent to train at church run seminaries never to
return.

Bishop John Joseph of Faisalabad shot himself in the head outside the a
Courthouse  in broad-day light in front of hundreds of people on May 6, 1998.
(See Daily Dawn, Karachi of May 7, 1998.)

Later it transpired that he did so to cover up massive financial wrong doings
and avoid being defrocked by the Vatican. Still he did considerable financial
damage to the diocese of Faisalabad and left it broke. His close lady associate
also managed to take away the parish-owned land cruiser.

It is also wrong to say that there are no Punjabi bishops..currently there are
two Punjabi Bishops...Sebastian Shah of Lahore and Rufin Anthony of
Rawalpindi-Islamabad.

The Goan clergy do not meddle in politics...and it was a government decision to
revert to the Joint Electorate system which was the norm from the creation of
Pakistan until the dictator Gen. Zia-ul-Haq imposed the Separate Electorate
System under pressure of the mullahs. In the Separate Electorate system
minorities can only vote for a minority candidate which were only 10  out of
237 National Assembly members.

The vast majority of minorities of Pakistan left cut of from the main stream
and held many protest demonstrations etc to restore the Joint Electorate System
under which one can vote for any candidate irrespective of religion and it was
re-instated by Gen. Musharraf.

regards,

John

[Goanet] 'Hindu Taliban' threatens Goa bars

2009-04-01 Thread John DSouza

'Hindu Taliban' threatens Goa bars
A Hindu nationalist group has warned it plans to target women drinking alcohol
in the beach bars of Goa, India’s tropical hot spot. The Sri Rama Sene group,
described by Indian media as the “Hindu Taliban”, says the former Portuguese
enclave is the centre of an immoral culture that is spreading throughout India.
Its leader, Pramod Muthalik, said his group would start by asking bar owners to
close down, and if that failed, it would launch direct attacks on the tourist
clientele.
The threat follows a recent attack on female drinkers in a Mangalore bar and a
series of assaults on courting couples on Valentine’s night. Sri Rama Sene is
officially banned in Goa, but sympathy for its anti-western values is growing
among those who live in an area increasingly blighted by the effects of drug
and alcohol abuse.
Local police are swift to crack down on beach parties and other so-called
illegal gatherings — a British tourist was among several beaten up by police at
a rave at a restaurant on Anjuna beach last week — and the Goan authorities
have announced that tourists wearing beachwear deemed an “affront to the
religious sentiments of Hindus” will be asked to cover up.
T-shirts bearing the image of the Hindu deity Shiva — commonly worn by
backpackers — are among the items targeted. “We have formed teams to travel to
the coastal areas to seize such clothes and arrest the sellers of such
garments,” said the deputy collector, AJ D’Souza

Human rights worker with United Nations ties, Clarence Dias, caught with child
pornography
BY ALISON GENDAR and NICOLE BODE
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITERS
Wednesday, January 21st 2009, 12:29 AM
A high-ranking human rights worker with ties to the United Nations was nabbed
at Kennedy Airport Tuesday with kiddie porn in his suitcase, officials said.
Clarence Dias, 65, president of the International Center for Law in
Development, whose offices are located at the UN, had the smut in his carry-on
bag as he passed through security on his way to a flight bound for Bangkok,
Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.
Transportation Security Administration officials doing a random bag check
around 8:20a.m. allegedly found a DVD whose cover featured an apparently
underage nude boy and an adult male in Dias' handbag, prosecutors said.
The video's title - Winner Pub Pattaya - apparently refers to a beach resort
in Thailand, authorities said. There were also other lewd photographs in the
bag, authorities said.
Dias - who holds a doctorate in law from Bombay University and Cornell Law
School and has taught at Boston College of Law - claimed the porn was for
research, authorities said.
He admitted it was his - but tried to play it off. He said he was doing
research on how to better make sure kids' rights were not abused, a police
source said. Yeah, sure. It's always research.
Calls to Dias' office went straight to voicemail Tuesday.
The humanitarian group calls itself a Third World NGO [nongovernmental
organization] concerned about human rights in the development process.
This is the latest sex scandal to roil the UN.
The agency came under fire in 2002 for turning a blind eye to wide-scale sexual
abuse of West African refugee children by its own aid workers and peacekeepers.
UN workers from nine countries - including Britain and India - were accused of
sexually exploiting children in dozens of refugee camps in war-torn Sierra
Leone, Guinea and Liberia, the internal report found.
Dias was expected to be arraigned last night at Queens Criminal Court on felony
charges of possessing an obscene sexual performance by a child. He could face
up to four years in prison if convicted.

[Goanet] Advice on returning to Goa

2008-09-05 Thread John DSouza
Dear Remy,

Don't be foolishonce you return to Goa after burning your boats you will be
stuck. I have been in the UK for over 30 years and do visit Goa but living
there with all the corruption and hanky-panky of politicians is not something I
can get used to.

Also if you do want to leave the UK, I would suggest Canada. My cousin who is a
British citizen did just that  after living in the UK for 10 years. The
reasonthe Goans were friendlier on the other side on the pond.

So DON'T make a foolish mistake. The opportunity that the West affords for your
wife and family to develop is very much more than what Goa or India can ever
offer in your life time.

Re: [Goanet] Catholic children and Catholic schools

2007-12-05 Thread John DSouza
Dear Goo-Netters,

I feel very very strongly that ALL Catholic children
should attend Catholic institutions as far as
possible. My parents are products of Catholic
institutions ( Loretto Convent and St. Bananbus High
School and St. Xavier College, Calcutta) and my wife's
parents attended St. Joseph's Convent, Bandra, Bombay
and St. George's, Missouri near Derha Dun.

I have attend St. Patrick's High School and St.
Patrick's College in Karachi,( unfortunately, the
Church does not have a university in Karachi and I
had to attend Karachi University) and my wife, St.
Joseph's Convent.

Our children, a boy and a girl go to the same schools
as we did.

All our Aunts, Uncles and cousins attended or are
attending Catholic institutions in India and Pakistan.

In practical life I have found that those with a
Catholic education are head and shoulders above others
of a similar level educated in Pakistani government
or private schools.

Also in the job market, graduates of Catholic
institutions are snapped up on the strength of the
name of the institution.

Also, because the Catholics are very few in number,
most of the students of Catholic schools are Muslims
who also benefit from a good education.

I firmly believe that Catholic schools afford a well
rounded education and instill in their students
charecter building values. Secular schools, in Karachi
at least, are money making rackets and care a fig
about imparting education.

Like, Rico, I too would like to know the opinion of
other Goa-netters especially those who are living in
the west.

Warm regards,

[Goanet] Aisha de Sequeira appointed by Morgan Stanley to head Indian operations

2007-10-25 Thread John DSouza
Morgan Stanley, which split with JM Financial in
India, has announced that it has received an
investment banking license for India. In February this
year, JM and Morgan Stanley ended their 10-year old
partnership. As part of the deal, Morgan Stanley sold
its 49 per cent stake in their investment banking
joint venture to JM Financial for $20 million, and
simultaneously bought out JM’s 49 per cent stake in
their brokerage joint venture for $445 million.
Morgan Stanley was handicapped in the last eight
months since it did not have an investment banking
licence. It was able to advise only on cross-border
MA, and underwrite non-domestic capital market
transactions, says Dow Jones. The firm has been
provided a licence by Securities Exchange Board of
India. “The license gives us access to what is an
important and vibrant domestic investment banking
market,” Dow Jones quotes Hans Schuettler, chief
executive of Morgan Stanley in Asia, as saying. The
firm will now be able to provide onshore investment
banking advisory and underwriting services, as well as
underwrite domestic IPOs.
The company has also announced the appointment of
Narayan Ramachandran as its chief executive and
country head for India. He is currently the head of
the firm’s investment management operations in the
country. It also appointed Aisha de Sequeira, a senior
banker at Morgan Stanley in New York, as head of
investment banking in India, to be based in Mumbai.
The company, which has 1,100 employees in India, also
has plans to develop its private-equity operations,
and expand real estate investments.

takes to
vote for them is a click of a mouse...

Jason, 17, and Druston, 15, are currently studying at
St.
Paul's Catholic School in Milton Keynes. They are both

exceptional musicians- Jason has achieved a grade 7 in

piano at the Yamaha Music School and is a self taught
lead
guitarist and singer in the band. Druston plays bass
guitar
and is the lead singer in the band. He began singing
on
stage at the age of 6.

These talented teens reached for stardom when they
entered
an Instant Pop Star competition sponsored by Coco
Cola.
They have had the opportunity to meet and record songs
with
two famous producers, Simon Hill and Rob May, who have
been
recording and touring with bands including JTQ, Kim
Wilde,
Pet Shop Boys, West Life and Steps.

The brothers sing songs from the 60's onwards. The
songs of
Elvis Presley, Cliff Richard, Eagles, Dire Straits,
Bob
Marley, UB40, Bryan Adams are some that the brothers
sing.
And the list is endless...

Jason and Druston both feel that they owe their
achievements to Milton Keynes, as they have grown up
here
since birth. They are proud to represent Milton Keynes
in
this competition and winning it with the votes from
our
community will promote the image of MK to the wider
musical
community.

Their three recorded songs are now placed on the
Instant
Pop Star Website. Entering Druston D'Mello in the
search
field will display the three songs.

Voting commenced on 3rd September 2007 and will
conclude on
30th September 2007. The first three places with the
highest votes will be given the opportunity to record
an
original song in a professional recording studio.
Druston's
song 'You're Beautiful' is currently at number one
(1st
position).

Jason and Druston would be grateful for the support of

anyone, especially people living in Milton Keynes. All
it
takes is a click of a mouse, and you could be helping
these
talented brothers put Milton Keynes on the map. To
vote go
to the Instant Pop Star Website.

Missionary school shut after warning

Daily Dawn, Karachi September 10,2007

By Hameedullah Khan

MINGORA, Sept 9: A Christian missionary girls’ school
at Sangota was closed down for an indefinite period on
Sunday after a letter threatening suicide attacks was
issued purportedly by an extremist organisation.

The organisation charged the school’s administration
of preaching Christianity and vulgarity among
students.

The organisation Janisaran-e-Islam (Devotees of Islam)
issued a two-page ‘red notice’ in Urdu language
warning the Sangota Public School’s administration to
wind up its activities and replace the Christian staff
with Muslims within seven days or else face suicide
attacks.

Local police enhanced security for the Christian
staff, including some women Sri Lankan nationals, at
the school.

“Keeping in view the current uncertain situation in
the area we have decided to close down the school for
an indefinite period,” the acting principal Ms Seema
said. She added that the school would reopen after the
situation improved.

Principal Ms Constantine, hailing from Sri Lanka, was
on leave. Two other Sri Lankan staffers were Ms
Welmarina and Ms Moraine.

“We have taken appropriate measures for the safety of
the staff and have enhanced the number of policemen
deputed at the school,” DSP Mingora Abdul Kalam told
Dawn.

The school was established in 1954 and was currently
educating 950 girl students out of which 215 were
boarders.

The school was gifted by the British Government to the
then Wali of Swat and was initially co-ed, but since
1998, it had only been admitting girl students.

Hostel students have started leaving the school
fearing attacks. Some students regretted that it was
unjust on part of the militant organisations to
deprive them of seeking education.

The militant group had on Saturday sent the letter to
the local press club directing it to publish it in
newspapers. Earlier, similar letters were sent to
different people, including video and CD shops,
hairdressers, net cafes, nurses, girls’ schools and
organisations dealing with population planning. Some
shops and infrastructures were targeted when their
warnings were ignored.

In the letter, the extremist organisation warned the
school administration to replace male and Christian
students with Muslims and ordered the school shut till
such an arrangement was in place. It added that
students should be clad in burqa while going to school
and younger girls should wear head-scarves. They
warned parents that if any student was seen without a
burqa then they would target them with suicide
attacks.

The organisation levelled serious allegations against
the school’s administration alleging that hostel
students were being taken to the church located inside
the school during the night.

Moreover, it added that students were being encouraged
to use the Internet, which they used for chatting and
viewing vulgar pictures.

The organisation alleged that girl students of class
fourth and fifth were being taught by women teachers
whereas males had been recruited for higher classes.

The militants warned guardians of the students of dire
consequences if their demands were not fulfilled.

Islam does not have a rigid caste system as Hinduism
does.

What Gilbert has mentioned are different sects. For
example we cannot classify Roman Catholic,Baptists,
Anglican, Calvinists etc as castes of Christianity.

In Pakistan, only the police has a column for caste.

And they clasifiy Sheikhs, Syeds, etc as different
caste. Also for others they write their tribal
afflications.

But technically, this is not correct. I believe that
the still follow the old format forms left behind by
the British.

Hence, to my knowlodge there is no caste system
practiced in Islam in the religious sense.

[Goanet] CHRISTIANS THREATENED: CONVERT TO ISLAM OR DIE IN PAKISTAN

2007-05-14 Thread John DSouza
---
CONVENTION OF THE GOAN DIASPORA FROM GOA INTO THE WORLD
Lisbon, Portugal June 15-17, 2007 Details at:
http://www.goacom.org/casa-de-goa/noticias.html
---

CHRISTIANS THREATENED: CONVERT TO ISLAM OR DIE

The same threatening letter was sent to Christian
communities in Charsadda and Mardan, ordering the
closure of churches and conversion to Islam within 10
days on pain of execution. The police are treating it
as a joke. The bishop of Islamabad has expressed deep
fear and called for the support of the government the
world.

05/11/2007

Islamabad (AsiaNews) – Convert to Islam within 10 days
and shut down all the country’s churches: the
ultimatum was delivered in a threatening letter that
Muslim fundamentalists sent to Christian communities
in Charsadda and Mardan, in northern Pakistan. If
their orders are not obeyed, “all Christians will be
executed”.

The letter was sent on 7 May to local churches, who
immediately took it to the police. Feroz Shah,
district inspector of Charsadda, said he had
investigated the matter. For him, it’s a “joke”, and
so “there is no need to make any arrests” Christians,
he added, “are safe and well protected” in the area.

Mgr Anthony Lobo, bishop of Islamabad-Rawalpind i,
does not share the inspector’s view. He told AsiaNews:
This letter is not a joke, but a threat that needs to
be taken seriously. It has left the Christian
community of Pakistan very frightened. We have already
appealed to higher powers in the country to ask for
help and we will continue to do so.

The bishop said it was important to understand that
even jokes, if aimed at minorities, could become
reality. Even if this letter is the work of an
isolated madman, it’s possible that he may commit some
atrocity against Christians.

The bishop added: “Now we must pray, but we cannot
stop at that. We have already protested against this
situation of fear and uncertainty and we will continue
to do so. In the meantime, I appeal to the world to
help us in this dangerous struggle against
fundamentalism.”

Dear listers,

Exactly WHERE can I find a good Goan cook...I have
been looking for one in Europe but cannot get one even
after trying for over two years. Cooks and Butlers are
in great demand not only in Europe but also in North
America. And, needless to say, are very well paid.

[Goanet] Goanet Should be Kept Secular

Goanet should be kept 'secular' in the sense that
topics relating to all religions that Goans subscribe
to should be open to discussion.Religion is part of
the Goan psyche and thus forms an integral part of the
individual...most of our social and ethic behaviour
stems from religious values.

[Goanet] Happy Thanksgiving to Americans of Goan origin

2006-11-25 Thread John DSouza
Dear Mario,

Your heart bleeds for the Muslims in Iraq and
Afghanistan. They are suffering today for the OWN
fault. If they have mindless fellow Muslims in their
midst whose only aim is to disrupt the lives of their
fellow beings trhen they should DEAL WITH THEM.

Let me give you a couple of examples... After World
War II, Japan and Germany were fully destroyed. The US
helped them build their countries up...they not only
cooperated with US troops but also were thankfully to
them. The Marshall plan went a long way to put them on
their feet again. They had the good sense to realize
that the US, their enemy, was there to help them so
they accepted all the aid and see where they are
today.

Both Iraq and Afghanistan have got this golden
opportunity to build up their country and get on the
road to progress.

But as yourself, they too have blinkers on or is it
that both Japan and Germany were non-Muslim countries
where better sense prevails.

I agree with the views of Gabe and Selma and certainly
not with your.

I am simply stunned that such a Tamasha could be held
in a church and that too in the name of Holy Mass.

I believe the right thinking Catholics should protest
to the Catholic Bishops Conference of India that such
nonsense can be practiced. What is worse but it seems
that this blasphemy has their official sanction.

It is high time we do something practical about the
situation before it gets out of hand.

I have attended Mass in many countries but have NEVER
seen or heard of such unholy acts being committed
being committed in the name of the Mass.

[Goanet] The History of Traditional Marian Prayers

2006-10-07 Thread John DSouza

The History of Traditional Marian Prayers
Posted by: gorettiali_nee_dsouza @yahoo.com on
Karachi Anthonian groups website

The History of Traditional Marian Prayers

The Angelus
The name of this prayer derives from the first Latin
word ('angel').
The Angelus was not officially approved in its current
form until
1724 by Pope Benedict XIV, who prescribed the prayers
be said at
dawn (6am), noon (12pm) and dusk (6pm) throughout the
year except
during the Easter season when the Regina Coeli was to
be recited.
Originally, three Hail Marys were said, with the words
of the
Incarnation coming into popular usage as time passed.
An Angelus
bell (three slow peals) would ring calling the
faithful to prayer at
the appropriate times, which has varied historical
origins:
• Evening
Francicans of Assisi ring a 'Hail Mary Bell' in 1269
to call to mind
the Incarnation
Pope John XXII approves the now widespread custom of
the bell and
three Hail Marys in 1318
• Morning
The three Hail Marys and ringing of the bell is done
at dawn as well
as in the evening in Parma, Italy, 1318
The custom spreads rapidly throughout Europe
• Midday
Pope Callistus III orders the practice of the bell and
Hail Marys at
midday as an 'Angelus of Peace' in 1456

Hail Holy Queen (Salve Regina)
The origin of the prayer is disupted between Petrus of
Monsoro (d.
about 1000), Bishop of Compostella, and Adhémar,
Bishop of Podium,
the first to answer the call to a Crusade. It was
definitely
popularized and set in its current form by Bernard of
Clairvaux and
the Abbey of Cluny in the 12th century. From that
time, it has
enjoyed wide liturgical use from the Mass to the
Divine Office.

Hail Mary
The early history of the Hail Mary is not clear, as
the words are
taken from Scripture and it is difficult to ascertain
when the
greeting/prayer was distinctly used. One source
attributes the
distinct use of the first half to St. Idlefonsus of
Toledo in the
7th century. Its use as a salutation and prayer begin
to appear from
frequently in the 11th and 12th centuries, though the
first half
only was regarded as the 'Hail Mary'. Here are the
parts of the
prayer:
• Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee
(Luke 1:28
with 'Mary' gradually added by the Church)
• Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the
fruit of thy
womb, Jesus ( Luke 1:42 with 'Jesus' being added by
Pope Urban IV in
1261)
• Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now
and at the
hour of our death. Amen (based on the declaration of
the Council of
Ephesus in 431, this part of the prayer appeared in
the mid-15th
century, being codified by the Council of Trent in
1568)

Magnificat
This is the only hymn of praise composed by the
Blessed Virgin Mary,
as recorded in Luke 1:46-55. It is delivered as a
response to her
cousin Elizabeth's greeting (Blessed art though among
women...) on
the occasion of the Visitation. The name derives from
the first
Latin word in the hymn, which is often used as a
prayer.

Memorare
The Memorare, from the Latin 'remember' which is the
first word in
the Latin translation, was traditionally thought to
have been
composed by the Cisterian St. Bernard of Clairvaux. It
was
popularized in the 15th century by a French priest,
Claude Bernard
(who some also attribute its origin). It emphasizes
Mary's role as
intercessor and her unbroken history of answering the
prayer of
those who call to her.

Queen of Heaven (Regina Coeli)
The first lines of the Regina Coeli (from the Latin
words which
begin the prayer) were spoken by angels to St. Gregory
the Great in
the 7th century on an Easter morning as he was in
procession. He
added the fourth line. It continued to be used with a
prayer added
later, and was officially designated as an alternate
prayer to the
Angelus by Pope Benedict XIV in the 18th century.

Sub Tuum
This prayer was found on a 3rd century papyrus in
Egypt, making it
one of the oldest verifiable prayers to Mary. It
emphasizes the
Blessed Virgin's role as intercessor, and is one of
the few non-
European prayers to gain popularity in the Latin Rite
Church.
