[Goanet] CUNCOLIM CELEBRATES INDEPENDANCE 2010
63rd INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATION - CUNCOLIM –GOA. There was uncertainty in the air. The heavy rains had damaged both the Konkani rail tracks and the highway, we were wondering how we would make it to Goa. At the same time we did not want to disappoint the students of Cuncolim with whom we usually celebrate Independence day. So when we met to finalize the Scholarships and financial aid we decided, come what may we would make it to Goa. Whilst most people were enjoying a weekend siesta, Roney-Hon-Secretary, Benes–Vice President and Nassim–President along with Sub-committee - Sylvia and Mabel departed with a prayer in their mouths to celebrate the 63rd Independence day with the children/students of Cuncolim.”Thank God”, we arrived safely Pre Independence, we met the principal/headmasters of all the five schools/college. This inter action was very fruitful as it helped us understand the infrastructure and needs of the students and schools. On Independence Day, Sylvia, Mabel, Roney, Benes and Nassim along with the Goa committee Filonio Vaz, Jefferies Mascarenhas, Ivan Moraes, Manny Fernandes and Dinesh Naik visited Our Lady of Health H School, Cuncolim United H School, Maria Bambina Convent H School, Infant Jesus H. School, and H.R. Kenkre H School. At the schools we had the pleasure of interacting once again with the principals, teachers’ students and witnessed skits, patriotic songs and prayers organized by the students of the primary and secondary section of the schools; we were impressed with so much talent on display. At each school, members in their speech, encouraged students to recognize their talents, work hard to achieve their goals, requested students to appreciate the good work carried out by the teaching staff and make best use of the opportunities given by the schools. The heads of school in turn thanked the Cuncolim welfare Trust for their time; effort and contribution that helped students overcome their academic expenses. 67 Freeships, 24 Sponsorships and 25 Scholarships were distributed to deserving students, amounting to Rest 88,200/- Our Experience at H.R Kendra H. School-Veroda-Cuncolim At the H R Kenkre H. School, Mabel and I witnessed Innocence, Simplicity and Sincerity written on the faces of the children present at the Independence Day. They have the inclination but do not have the resources, the school is willing to give their time but the boys and girls have domestic commitments. What they need is a touch of extra love and careful guidance. They are oppressed by society and need extra help and help we gave them. They were grateful and thanked us profusely for the financial aid. We believe that this school should be treated differently from the other schools in Cuncolim as they have children from very low strata attending the school and many may not complete high school due to lack of funds. We believe that children have the right to live, to play, to be protected and express their views. We act as an NGO to identify, address and try to eliminate the root causes of issues but, due to the paucity of funds, Cuncolim welfare trust has not been able to reach out to all the students. (Non-Cuncolkars) . The school has appealed for new desk and benches for their student as the old one are completely broken(not repairable). If any of you would like to donate a desk and a bench pl get in touch with Nassim DeSouza - 9920939453- nassim.deso...@emirates.com A drawing competition was held in the respective schools for all the children. Cash prizes were awarded to first three winners of each category. The Independence celebration ended on a very productive, informative and satisfying note. We can say one thing “All went well” We owe a Big Thank You to Roney Almeida- Hon Secretary for the planning and looking into every minute detail to ensure the celebration was a success. Many thanks to Benes Coutinho- Vice President for scrutinizing all the Scholarships, financial aid applicants and pay-outs. We also want to thank Ms Doreen Gama-Hon. Asst Treasurer for helping us write and check all the cheques and envelops. Thanking you Francis Jacques for organizing the cheque books A word of thanks to our Sub-Committee members Sylvia Coutinho and Mabel Desouza for volunteering to come to Goa and be with the students of Cuncolim Above all we want to thank Mr Cedric Moraes- Trustee for his encouragement, help and moral support The Cuncolim Welfare Trust is Proud of the following Cuncolkars for their Financial support : “The more you give the more you get” Mr Joe Coutinho – Mileavado – Bandra Mumbai - Rs6000/- Mr Derrick D’Souza – Dandora – Andheri(W) - Rs6000/- Mr Elvis D’Souza – Dandora -Cuncolim - Rs6000/- Mr Edson D’Souza - Dandora -Cuncolim - Rs6000/- Mr Rudolph Noronha – Madicotto - Cuncolim - Rs3000/- All our precious sponsors-donors who believe in “the Joy of Giving.” Lastly thank you Mr President- Nassim DeSouza
[Goanet] REPORT: Cuncolim Welfare Trust Annual Social Fiesta
President’s Note Friends, Cuncolkars, Countrymen The Trustees, Committee Members and myself Wish You All a “Happy Feast” and welcomes you all to celebrate our togetherness at the Gala Annual Day Celebration. May our Patroness “Our Lady of Health” intercede for each one of you and your families and may you be blessed with Good Health, Happiness, Peace and Prosperity all through 2010. Hope 2009 had been kind to you and your family. Photos: http://picasaweb.google.com/noellakittu/CuncolimSocial# It has been kind to the Cuncolim Welfare Trust. We had set a modest target and achieved it. On Independence Day, August 15, 2009, in Cuncolim Goa - 59 Eligible students were provided financial aid ; 25 students received Sponsorships ; 25 Meritorious students were awarded scholarships A drawing/painting competition was organized in Cuncolim on the occasion of the Independence Day, which was well patronized and attended. An annual trip to Khandala was organized for Committee/subcommittee members and their families, and of course the Annual Gala Get-together 2009 which was well attended. You the Well-wishers, Donors, Committee Members and Trustees deserve a pat on the back. A ‘BIG THANK YOU’ to you all, we are grateful for your efforts and valuable contribution. However, we cannot stop here, but increase our efforts towards our welfare activities for which we gained the trust of the Cuncolkars. Our First need is the greatest need – You Cuncolkars. We need you to become members – make members. We need each one of you to contribute towards the Trust by registering as members, Come on The membership is only Rs 500/- per person and every adult member of the family is entitled to become and should become a member. This appeal is to all Cuncolkars, especially the young blood to establish your roots. We understand many people have moved house, if your address has changed, please drop your card or intimate us your new address and telephone/cell no. so that we can get in touch with you. We also have to make the Trust a dynamic and vibrant entity with its own distinct identity. The first and foremost step - the registered office/premises of the Trust must be legally transferred in the name of the Trust. It is unfortunate and sad that after all these years the Trust has no legal home to call its own. We are grateful to all the stalwarts who held the premises in “trust” in the past. Legal consultations are on to effect this goal and the co-operation of all committee members past and present, Trustees and well-wishers will be appreciated. I end this note, thanking you all once again and wishing you All the Best for the New Year 2010. Dev Boren Korum Nassim DeSouza President (Bandra, Mumbai-Dandora, Cuncolim) Cell No.9920939453 THE CUNCOLIM WEFARE TRUST ANNUAL SOCIAL FIESTA For many of you who were not able to make it on the 7th of Feb, 2010.. we give you a gist into what you missed at the wonderful fiesta!! In the hustle bustle of our lives, we very rarely have the time to meet and greet each other and the Cuncolim Social Gathering is one such place where you get your chance to do that... God was and always will be the center of our celebrations and so we started with the Holy Mass, which gives you a divine feeling of being one with your community and with all, gathered there. We, a small family, the members, wanted to make this Social a one with a difference, a one where all feel they are a part of it. So we chose a new venue, a new setting-indoors-The Willingdon Gymkhana-Santa Cruz. We began the afternoon with the achievements, as that's what makes us proud of knowing that we are not anywhere behind in terms of academic excellence and that makes me proud that amongst us we have students topping with 90% and above. I wish all Cuncolkars take this as an example and strive to make a place for yourselves in this vast world, the sky is not the limit anymore. Not to forget the Sports and other activities too that are equally important in our lives and give us the spirit to be energetic and healthy. The Presidents Speech, and the thank you note by Hon. Secretary-Ronnie Almeida was sweet and short, and one that gave us clarity of all that we do and all that we want to do as committee members/Cuncolkars, and a meaning to feel that we are ONE and should remain so.When we work to-gether, we learn from each other and accomplish more that we could do alone. Truly it is the combined effort of each and every one of us that allow us to achieve our goals. Lets get to the fun and frolic, the dance sessions of Beat It and “Fruit Salad Mix” by Susie was a great entertainer...keep it up Susie, we need enthusiastic people around who can make us shake a leg and everything else too. The DJ and Compare were great too, they made sure the young and not so young were entertained with excellent music, dance and games

[Goanet] Monsoon Advisory
Monsoon Advisory United Way-Mumbai Helpline It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change. - Charles Darwin We need to prepare ourselves to minimise the effects of floods BEFORE FLOODS ?? Be aware of the potential flooding spots in your ward/area ?? Keep all emergency contact numbers handy for immediate use ?? Identify and visit elevated areas in and around your home as places of refuge during floods. Consult and involve local authorities and neighbours ?? Keep 'Family Emergency Kit' ready (Refer Page No.2) DURING FLOODS ?? Turn off all electrical appliances in a flooded area ?? Stay away from Power lines ?? Avoid contact with flood water - it may be contaminated ?? If stranded in a vehicle, leave the vehicle and move to a higher land ?? Don't drive through flooded water ?? Avoid unnecessary calling on emergency contact numbers ?? Don't spread rumors ?? Don't walk through moving water. Six inches of moving water can make you fall. If needed use a stick to check the firmness of the ground in front of you ?? Don't eat and drink open food or water ?? You can help keep yourself afloat by tying air-tight empty plastic bottles around your waist AFTER FLOODS . Stay away from drowned power lines, and report them to emergency personnel . Stay out of any building if it is surrounded by floodwaters . Clean and disinfect everything that got wet. Discard any food items which may have got wet . Service damaged drainage and sewage systems as soon as possible. These can be a major health hazard . Its February 7 2009, and it gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to this Gala Annual Day Celebration. The one time- we interact, renew ties and have a fun filled evening of entertainment. We have prepared a beautiful setting with lots of fun filled events to make sure the night is special for you and your family. We want you to have fun. The year 2008-2009 has begun with a change. A new Committee Old Wine in New Bottles The year has been fraught with acrimony and marred by internal dissension, but has not distracted us from our Goal. For it is not, how big or small the Committee is, but how effective it is. The fault lies with no one - and everyone. August 15, 2008, Independence Day, 26 Sponsorships, 42 freeships, were distributed to the needy and marginalized students, and 28 scholarships were distributed to the meticulous students of Cuncolim. We owe this to some of the new committee members and our well-wishers. A Big Thank You to you all for your contribution to a worthy cause. The next task is to widen our grass roots. For this, we have to induct new members. We need new blood, new faces, new ideas and I sincerely request you all especially. the young sons and daughters of Cuncolim to come join us, shoulder some responsibility, take up some project, an idea of a project that will benefit Cuncolim Only 10 new members have joined the family. A concerted effort must be made, to bring in one, two, three members. So Lets' Start Now and continue year round. To my fellow Cuncolkars overseas, how can we reach you. Whoever you are, wherever you are touch base. This is an appeal to keep your roots alive. If any one in India or overseas knows of a fellow Cuncolkar, please give us the E-mail/Fax/Cell/Phone no. we will contact them and your one will be equal to Ten. Second Saturday in May, we plan to organize a dance in Cuncolim with the help of our Goa committee, spearheaded by Mr Filonio Vaz, once again elected Chairman of the Cuncolim Municipal Council. Lets' salute him. Do try and make it to Cuncolim, if you can. With the blessing of our Lady of Health, Cuncolkars, Trustees, the Managing Committees and well-wishers we have traveled this long journey as one family, generation after generation, working towards the social upliftment of Cuncolkars in Mumbai and Goa. In this current scenario, finance may be hard to come by, but the generosity of Cuncolkars is famed throughout Goa and overseas and it is this generosity we are counting on. We look forward to your valuable contribution through political and administration contacts, sponsorships and financial help to meet all our goals.
