Wow! "Lawyers thrash JNU students in court", actually makes it to Page 8 of
the Navhind Times in the News Page, after the National Page. Not bad at all.

Re: [Goanet] Sexual harassment case at Goa Cable News Channel takes a 'Tehelka' turn

2015-08-17 Thread reena martins

Dear JC,You’ve raised some pertinent questions, which would be best answered by
Mayabhushan, but here are my two cents.1. The story does not carry quotes from
the ‘victim’ and ‘perpetrator’ but it is insufficient to prove that Mayabhushan
has not spoken to (or known) them. However, quotes do lend a story a certain
credibility.2. As we have seen, time and again, news of such incidents only
cause the woman victim untold grief. There is curiosity about her identity,
character and antecedents, and even before a formal complaint has been filed,
the jury is out and her name is made mud. Whether she is rendered unemployable
is anyone’s guess. The ‘perpetrator’ on the other hand, is let off with a
school masterly warning, not to mention a promising career.
3. But the good news is that the law does not regard such impediments as
loosely as balcao talk. The Sexual Harassment of Women at the Workplace
(Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013, defines sexual harassment as
acts (direct or implied) like: (i) physical contact and advances involving
unwelcome and explicit sexual overtures; or(ii) a demand or request for sexual
favours; or(iii) showing pornography against the will of a woman; or(iv) making
sexually coloured remarks; or(v) any other unwelcome physical, verbal or
non-verbal conduct of sexual nature.
Punishment: 1-3 years of simple or rigorous imprisonment.
4. Under the above Act, organisations are supposed to appoint their own
Internal Complaints Committees, but in case they haven’t, the complainant can
approach the Local Complaints Committee appointed by the District Magistrate or
Collector. If she is unable to come forward and write out a complaint, the
Local Committee is supposed to assist her with it.
4. But as we’ve seen, stigma and humiliation (heaped by both men and women in
society) deters women victims of sexual abuse from filing formal complaints.
Our courts are also to blame for the shoddy and insensitive manner in which
they handle these victims during proceedings. But good news, once again, comes
as the Supreme Court’s judgement in B C Deva versus State of Karnataka, 2007,
which puts the version of a rape victim above material evidence in proving the
crime.

I am sure that every reasonable person among us (and the 'lady in question')
would want to file a complaint and bring the perpetrator to justice. I hope
there is a fair structure for this to happen.

My concern, however, is related to the manner of Mayabhushan's intervention.
 Here are my questions:

1: Do MB and the alleged perpetrator or alleged victim know each other,
 personally?
2: Has this publicity helped or hurt the alleged victim financially,
 emotionally and socially?
3: Has it damaged her chances of securing future employment elsewhere ?

It had to be made from FRESH COCONUT, NOT copra(dried coconut)

 QUOTE

 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chari%2C_South_India
Chari is an Indian community belonging to Brahmin caste in South
Indian. Chari is also called as Acharya.

The word Chari is derived from the word Charya or Acharya (guru).
Some of the Chari were skilled in building temples and travelled
building temples towards north during Krishnadevaraya period. A bunch
of the members settled down in Goa for building temples and during the
era of Portuguese the Chari community lost its touch with its origin
in the south. Over a period of Portuguese rule in Goa they were
offered jobs like carpentary, blacksmithy and masonry for building the
governmental and non-governmental civil structures. As Portuguese did
not expand their territory in India other than Goa, the Chari
community also was stagnated and hence they had no other option than
 remaining local carpenters and blacksmiths.

The Chari community has progressed a lot now, not only in the field of
arts but also in others like education, sports as well. Many of the
artisans from the Chari community are well known for their artworks
 and craftsmanship.

Regarding Chari community, well it is spread all over India not only

scripted by the infinimally grey matter endowed pen of Mr R K Nair
as well as the follow the leader style posting from the erstwile Mr

While I have no personal grudge against these two individuals, I feel

NOW THAT this minor matter is out of the way, my question to Goanet
moderators is ( particularly in respect to the mail from Mr Nair-ji ) is :
How did you let that mail through ( with your stringent standards )
 when :
1)There was a personal unprovoked attack ( including cheaply worded
sexual references about my family name )
 2) What has it added to the discussion of the point I was making ?
3)When Goanet moderators ( if they have any Goan-ness about them...
unlike the Nair's and the Yogesh's) should recognise as the true Niz
 Goenkars
like Mr J Colaco and Mr Alfred de Tavares did instantaneously that Virgincar
is a relatively common name in Goa
4)Why is it ( and we can all look back at the archives ) that this accusation
about fraudulent ID's appears almost without exception when a posting is in
opposition to a particular political or social ideology

 [Goanet] Marxist mendacity

 To Goanet -

It has never been anybody's case that the migrants
are the ONLY major problem currently wracking Goa,
as claimed by the Marxist gits. The alarming levels of
migrant presence are A (as in one) major problem.
99% of the Goans recognize this plain truth and therefore
it has set alarm bells ringing in the comrades' pigpens.

The second deliberate lie peddled by the Marxists is that
the Muslim migrant is singled out for special disdain and
abuse. Again, arrant hogwash, in the same league as
the whopper by the execrable propagandist who had
claimed awhile back that Muslims have no freedom of
 religion in Goa.

To the Goan, a ghati is a ghati. Perhaps the Marxists
have a highly evolved nose that can distinguish between
Muslim refuse and Hindu refuse that is deposited on
the Goan waterline every morning. Goans, I regret to
disclose, aren't endowed with any such special powers
of olfactory discrimination. Unless migrants do
something particularly egregious - like slaughter
animals and leave carcasses lying in the open for dogs
to drag them into temple premises, as witness the
incidents at the Shantadurga temple in Verem - Goans
don't care two hoots about the his religion. Their
large numbers are bad enough, religion be damned.

The third deliberate lie the Marxists desperately hope will
stick is the charge that to be anti-high-migrant-numbers
is to be anti-poor. This stale smelly joke is ripped straight
out of that goop of a Marxist playbook cooked up by the
muddleheaded Karl (of the class warfare prattle fame).

The Marxists and their Leftist sympathizers take pains to
hide the fact that Goans also have severe issues with the
rich bhaile - brown and white - pawing Goan real estate,
buying out our houses. Those rich marauders who look
upon our land as no more than seafront property to set
up their vacation and party homes, and golf courses and
 helipads.

As I have said before - the thing to do with 2-pesos
trash-talking Marxists is to laugh them out of town (but
not before rubbishing their pustulated behinds).

 Warm regards,

build roads ... and do all the scum work that no Goan, self-respecting
or otherwise, would care to do. Try to give them a fair deal, and find
ways of incorporating them into Goan society (as you would apply for a
Green Card), rather than flushing them out or declaring war on them.

 Hi Alfred,
Good to hear from you on Goanet. What a privilege it
must have been to know Fr De Mello in person.

I'm told in private that Fr Tony died peacefully in
his sleep at Fordham University NY. Apparently there
are groups that meet regularly to discuss his work. I
wonder if this simple man ever knew the amount of
people he influenced with his short stories.

Marshall, that's the name of the book, Song of the

That one followed Prayer of the Frog, which I loved.

I found him on Wikipedia, but does anyone know if we
can claim him as one of our own, a Goan that is. It
 doesn't say so on Wikipedia.

Selma, I think you are just arguing for the sake of doing so ... as I
sometimes do, when I'm bored here and need a laugh :-)

Anyway, the record needs to be set straight. We're not talking about
the world; we are talking about Goanet! Even in the world, there *are*
pockets of caring and sharing. Even in the crab-like Goan world, these
pockets do exist. We need to identify them, and nuture them.

If you don't agree that this positive side exists, how would you
describe the kudds of Bombay and of another century? How do you
explain all that social capital being built up in educational and
health institutions, that even today offer Goans (and the diaspora, in
some locations) quality infrastructure at a pittance? How do you
explain all those many initiatives in cyberspace, started by a state
that is just one-thousandth the size of Goa?

Goanet has been, and sometimes still is, a very helpful place. We are
at the crossroads now. It is up to us to decide whether we want to
keep it that way, whether we want to shape it into a more efficient
organisation of that nature, or whether we just want to reduce
everything to personalised I-hate-your-face-and-religion kinds of
postings as we have seen of late.

For long, I have maintained a 'folder' in my email software
(Evolution) called Goa Initiatives. Whenever I find someone
proposing a good idea, it goes straight into that folder. I can assure
you that it got filled with around 2000 ideas or emails over the year!
 Of small and larger kind.

People used to be more helpful and less egoistical in cyberspace in
the past. I recall how people like Eddie Fernandes helped my
journalistic work with inputs of very useful information, gleaned from
databases few of us had access to. I remember how unknown persons in
Vienna delivered faxes (at local costs) taken off the net for me, when
I was trying to get in touch with an organisation of oil producing
countries that was to have a conference in Goa. I recall that
initiative called the Goa Computers in Schools Project. Or take a look
at George Pinto's Goa Sudharop, clearly influenced by friendships
built in cyberspace too. We also tried to help when possible, small
things like passing on messages, sending out news, or searching
 telephone directories for numbers required.

People helping complete strangers, for no reason or motive, is a very
inspiring trend. In a world quickly getting subsumed by selfishness
(Ann Rynd would be rolling in her grave if she had to see how far we
have all reached!), this is really something nice.

What I mention is no myth. You can ask any of the old timers on this
list, and I guess quite a few will argue. Yes, we did have our fights,
our misunderstandings, and those things. But we also have all gained a
lot from helpfulness on Goanet, and that's why I call it a tool for
building social capital whenever I get the chance to do so! One day we
will look back and realise the role it has played in linking Goa and
 Goans. FN

neither parrikar nor advani have been convicted by an

dont you have any regard for the law of the land? or

if their judgements agree with your own ideology?

the fact that you run for political office makes such

 Hi Kevin,

It would benefit if you explained yourself in your posts; so that you can
prove show silly you are. This is a lot better than your hit-and-run attacks
 or your smears.

I was referring to YOUR standards of decency as an atheist. I then in the
very next sentence, went on to compare YOUR standards to my OTHER atheist
friends. (see below) Yet with your tunnel anti-Catholic mind, you
misinterpret my writings, just like you do the other writings. You compared
the standards of my atheist friends with my religious friends, based on your
miss-representation. Then shamelessly, you give me your bogus reasoning.
Well I am not surprised with your misrepresentations and your explanations.
I have mentioned to you this before. Your writings are a comedy, that I could
 enjoy this weekend.

Your response about the Irish continues to be a non-response, that only you
can make sense. Why would the Irish join secret societies when they could
drink their Guinness in public? What is wrong with joining societies like the
Masons, Rotarians, Lions, Elk lodge etc.? George Washington and many founding
fathers of the USA were Masons.

As regards the KC fighting issues about homosexuality at the behest of the
Vatican. Perhaps next, you will write the Evangelicals, Baptists etc. etc.
are also stooges of the Vatican. Why would one not expect a Catholic /
Christian institution to support biblical teachings? Curiously the
immorality of homosexuality is what you specifically did not want your
children (under 20 years) to be exposed to. Did your kids call you a stooge
 of the Vatican?

After I finish laughing at your inconsistencies ... I would like to save my
neurons for a more logical dialogue. Thank you for the comedy. This is my
 last post on this thread.
 Kind Regards, GL

 -- Kevin Saldanha

I am also pleased to know that most of Gilbert's atheist friends have much
higher morals and decency standards than his religious ones. He would be
pleased to know that these standards were attained by free thinking and
contemplation, primarily based on empathy we evolved over the last 6 million
years, and were not handed down from a supernatural being carved on stone
 tablets.

Clergy have been admonished for threating ex-communication and denial of the
eucharist to parishoners who supported same-sex human rights in contravention
of biblical teachings. The KoC has therefore taken it upon themselves to
'fight the good fight' for the faith.

 -- Gilbert Lawrnce wrote:

I asked you a simple question. You did not have an answer.

Neither could you give me three to five (or even one) example of KC doing the
bidding of the Vatican contrary to the interest of Catholic Americans or
America. Do you think American Catholics are unable on their own to evaluate
 and articulate morality?

Your string of anti-Catholic posts, as an ex-Catholic and an atheist, are an
insensitive, offensive claptrap. Don't you have any shame? Most
atheists I know have much higher morals and decency standards.

C A Bhandare has written to me privately apologising for any embarrassment
he might have caused me. He also has a rather convoluted (but seemingly
sincere) explanation for the untruthful statement he made, about me helping
him edit his postings. I have not responded to C A Bhandare's personal

 1) One does not apologise in private for mischief done in public. That is
what cowards do. Therefore unless C A Bhandare apologizes on the same forum
(GoaNet) that he made his frivolous statement I will not accept his apology.

 2) Unless C A Bhandare clearly identifies himself then neither his
statements or his apologies carry any weight. One doesn't respond to

One good consequence though of this Bhandare's lie is that our paranoid
Gilbert has got himself into a righteous knot trying to figure who is who.
Gilbert's suspicious nature doesn't allow him to untie himself as he

 Cheers!

Did you take a bike? my schoolmate and old friend Manguesh, who
serves the community here as a polite autoricksha driver, asked me.

Took me a moment to realise that this was a literal translation of
gaddi ghetlea?, the term used in Konkani when you purchase something
 new.

My chartered-accountant tea-drinking companion at Cafe Prakash often
reminds us that the Konkani ugi rao re is acceptable as an
expression of disbelief, but it sounds very rude when translated
 literally into Shut up, men.

Konkani has seen the influence of various languages; it also
influences various languages. We have read about critics talking about
the way Konkani shaped the speaking of Portuguese in Goa (no expertise
 in that field).

English 'shock-absorbers' become chakupsers in Konkani. The bus
conductor becomes a cilinder. Cecil Pinto has pointed out that the
nightie is widely used as a dress indicating modesty (and keeping
the body covered for a lady) not just during the night in Goa.

There must be dozens of such local terms. The Hobson-Jobson, a book of
Indo-Anglian terms written in pucca British colonial times, also
includes some words influenced by Goanisms. For instance, Goa butter
comes from the bin'na fruit (kokum). After years I ran into some at
 the Panjim market.

My friend A C Afonso, who lectured at the Dhempe College in the past,
was planning a compiliation of Konkani curse words. Must check where
 that reached

Instead of fighting over who's religion is worse off, how about
sharing and shedding some light on this issue? Rgds, FN

And opposing to that VCD is praising Portuguese rule(destruction of temples,
 impelled conversions, tortures, etc).

My great grandfather used to till the soil in someone else's field in Divar.
My grandfather bought his own field in Divar and tilled it. Later he took up
a job so that he could better educate his children. My father initially
helped in the fields and later, thanks to the education he received, worked
in the Department of Telecommunications. He left Divar and settled in
Porvorim so that I could get a better education. I studied to be a
Mechanical Engineer, worked for a couple of years and started my business. I
am already big making plans for my three and a half year old son.

So why am I telling you all this? Not to worry, there is actually a point to
 all this. Stay with me.

Human beings, by default, improve themselves and the environment they live
in. We are designed that way. When our neighbourhood does not have the
opportunities or resources to fulfill our needs we move to newer places.

It is quite easy to look down on migrants, call them ghantis and wish that
they were never here spoiling Goa. Remember they are working hard to
provide a better education and better jobs to their kids, just like all our
 forefather's did.

Basically, life is one big game of Fill in the Blanks. We educate our
children to be something better than ourselves. In the bargain, we leave a
blank in our place. Someone else comes and fills it up. After all, we are
also filling up someone else's blank when we go to work abroad.

We complain that migrants and outsiders are taking over Goa. Yes, they
are. They are simply filling in the blanks created by the Goans who are
taking over the Gulf and other countries.

 Dear Edward,

I dont know who JC is. My personal opinion is Parrikar
as a administrator is miles ahead in terms of vision
and integrity that people like Rane and Ravi.

I also think communalism is simply a stick that some
people use to beat BJP with, forgetting the record of
 congress

I also am convinced that most BJP MLAs dint make any
money inspite of being in power for quite some time
Unfortunately they lost this time because they couldnt
match the money power of their rivals esp in places
like Priol and Pale and sanvordem

Further more Parrikar should now concentrate on his
core vote bank and stop thinking about development and
all because like i said goans doont deserve it

As regards Reenas question I know at least one
catholic on this forum who is a parrikar Fan another
one campaigned for parrikar while at least 2 catholics
 were BJP candidates

As such the queston what I would do if i were

 Dear Dr. Carmo,

What is food to one may be poision to another, what Parrikar did in 70's is
history but we are in the present world of reality , during his term lot's
of damage was done to catholics in many ways and this is the reality , we
have witnessed how BJP and it's network works, i have nothing wrong with
his or your qualification but his behaviour and the party's stand dividing
people on religion basis throughout india and other anti-social elements
with the help of RSS is not good for goans.

There is nothing about Catholics v/s hindus, people don't distinguish this
element , such issues come to the forefront only when parties like BJP/RSS
make it political for their own gains. Apart from BJP which other party is
communal ?(i could be ignorant , if you can throw some light) Dr. Carmo ,
florida is a great place and you could be very lucky to be there, come down
to your motherland , see it for yourself and then pass respectful comments.

I have many friends who have met Parrikar and they have their own opinions.

Lastly, however much educated one may be , the lust for money, power , greed
, jealousy, hatred are the common features in the political field and
 Parrikar is no saint.

I hold no grudge against you for labelling me dukor , i wish you well. You
have not apologised as i wanted but never mind someone up there is watching
 .

Election results are finally out and the BJP has lost.
Candidates with lots of money power have managed to
win these elections and goan people have proved once
again that they dont deserve good governance.

Now is the time for these veterans to recover their
investments. Sadly goan people have lost the right to
protest and I for one would not feel even slight
discomfort if Goa is sold to the highest bidder

The goa bachao andolan and its leaders should also
keep quiet and not waste time with vision documents
and white papers. They had an opportunity to jump
headlong into the fight but they dint and I dont blame
 them either.

Others like Jagrut Goem and Lokshakti should take
responsibility for whatever happens in Goa now.

Finally the BJP must introspect and try to be a good
opposition. They must have realised by now that
catholics are never going to support them come what
may. It would be fun if they start playing some
 toppling games for public entertainment

To who ever this DR CARMO D CRUZ is he has no moral right as a Goan to use
the word Dukor which is very derogatory. I dont understant how the censor
board or even Fredrick Noronha, for whom i have the highest respect in our
journalistic fraternity would allow the use of such a word.

I sympathise with Bonifacio and appreciate his gentlemanliness...DR CARMO
cant people of Velim think with their brains?

I and my family have been victims of the BJP's communial games played in the
mid 1990s through the then BJP communial agent from Margao Digamber Kamat. i
respect manohar Parrikar and have always admired him as a great legislator,
but not until he started to behave like a Narendra Modi and a chaddiwallah
 RSS bhakt.

i remember how my father suffered an untimely heartattack due to the
political pressure and the lad grabbing of prime land in our hometown margao
which our ancestors had meticulously acquired. The BJP under Parikar would
even influence the magistrate and the judiciary and the police just because
the illegal tenants in our backyard were supporters of Digamber Kamat.

Parrikar has had a hand in the Fountainhas property defacing scandal, the
bishops palace fiasco, the curhorem riots, the margao riots, the succoro
mosque burning scene and many such other scandals. An IIT-ian doent do all
 that.

It is unfortunate that the BJP even got the number seats to even dream of
comming together to form the govt. The BJP has been a curse not only to Goans
but to India as they started the RAM RAJYA politics and instigated the
 minorities.

Dr Carmo -- your language stink and if you have not learnt to be a gentleman
after being an IIT-ian and having a DR against your name, i leave to the
people of GOA to attach a title for people like you. I really wonder how you
fit into a place like Florida.

 Dears,

The name of one doctor, Dr.Selwyn Albuquerque from Mapusa, appears to be
that of my junior in school who used to live near the GFA football ground at
Duler, off the main road. I have requested confirmation on our alumni net
 group.

Dr. Ameeta Mascarenhas, MD Paediatrics is listed as Goa resident. She should
be traceable at Dona Paula, though I admit that I have never heard of her.
So too with Dr. Ajay Yeshwant Pednekar [who is apparently just MBBS or BAHMS
as no 'MD' is attached to his name in the advert.] is from Priol and
practicing at Mardol. The rest are all NRIs.

We need to call the bluff: Parrikar's or of the so-called patriotic [read
 BJP sympathisers] doctors.

Would be grateful if I could get names and contact details of any of the
tiatrists and Goan
musicians living/practising in Bombay between 1930 and 70.
This is for a book that I am working on, on the Goan immigrant in Bombay
between the above
period.
On this note, would also be happy to meet others Goans--from varied walks of
life, who could talk
about life in Bombay then. Am looking forward to hearing interesting anecdotes
and bits of oral
history, of what I'd like to think, were the good ole days :-).

I remember David from Late Rosario Rodrigues Troupe

Those of you who are fans of Late Rosario Rodrigues Tiatr late 1970s/80s,
 will remember his
popular team of artistes like Seby, Boby, Vittal, Catus, David etc.

Believe me or not, as youngsters, we never missed Rosario Rodrigues
 Khell-tiatr. I even
remember going to Velsao-Danddo (near Velsao Beach) on foot covering about 5
 kms from Utorda
and our route was Railways tracks passing thru Cansaulim just to watch his
 FREE show.

Some of the earlier Khell-Tiats names I remember are Ekech Ratri (with
 Carmena), Ami Fator,
Naum Naslolo (horror), Uzvadd Paloilo (with Betty Naz) etc (Pl. add more)

David was not seen in his recent tiatr nor I remember seeing Bobby, Vittal,
 Catus and Seby.
I also remember some of them working at Margao for banks, Camara
 (municipality) etc

Would appreciate if anyone write a line or two on any of the above (whether
 still living, why
they were not seen in the later tiatr of Rosario Rod or others, whether sick
 or gone abroad
 etc)

Sadly, David died on 27th May 2007.

In the death annoucement ad, it says..
 DAVID FRANCISCO RODRIGUES
 Ex.Konkani Stage Actor
 Ex. State Bank of India
 s/o late Filiphino/Natalina (Mazilwado)
 h/o Loretta
b/o Late Rosario Rodrigues (Carmina), Martinho, Maria augusta, Maria Aninha
 f/o Freizer (Safira)

Funeral took place on 28th May 4pm at Holy Trinity Chruch, Benaulim.
( I only read it today, I would have gone for the funeral)

MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE.

Very nice kids blog by Riza. Can someone advise about the safety of putting
 children's pictures

 with sickos
manipulating the information or child predators accessing these sites? One

But I am very passionate about English and it makes me
feel bad when learned people murder it.

But you say birds of same feather flop together. The word is
flock not flop and the full stop should come inside
  the quotation.

 Anthony,

It would be in everyone's interest to stick to debating ideas or
 opinions rather than grammar.

We all get what Dr. Barad is trying to say. Minor errors like a wrongly
placed full stop hardly qualify as 'murder'. I also think he meant FLOP
rather than flock. Looks like you missed the pun.

 Sunith

P.S. As a man 'passionate' about the English language(or is it just the
English) you must be aware that it is bad practice to start a sentence
with a conjunction(But) and quite unacceptable to start two successive
sentences with the same conjunction. P.P.S. It is also usual to follow
the conjunction with a comma when used in this way.

In the name of God, can you please restrain yourself
for once? Your commentary is truly embarrassing to
every self-respecting, secular Goan on this forum. You
are more than welcome to criticise aspects of religion
you find offensive, but why do you have to be
personally insulting to all the Hindus on this forum?
It's not right, it's not decent and it's not
 Christian.

And last but not not least if you are going to be
bigoted, then atleast be an informed bigot. That
statement would only be offensive to Muslims not
 Hindus.

 Thank you,
 selma

Please pay heed to what so many are requesting you, Nasci.

Your senseless outbursts are turning really embarassing, very
 demeaning.

Do you obtain any pleasure, fulfillment with such absurd taunts?

Do us a favour and lay off!

Eddie,
My observation of the elephant (in cameo in the pic accompanying the BBC story)
was not to indicate disbelief in the story. Was just not sure if having the poor
beast squeezed in, had anything to do with the 'elephant and snake charmer'
stereotype of India and Indians in India :)
As for the issue of child prostitution and paedophiles, as Fred says, it has
been
done to death, at least in the local and national media--not to say that it
becomes any less important because of that.
While I'm glad to see the kind of debate the BBC report has thrown up, am just
wondering if a similar report in the local media would have brought out anything
vaguely similar.

Paedophilia is, and has been, an issue in Goa. Right from the time of
Freddy Peat (1993) to Mayabhushan and team's capture of the sad issue
on film. But the way it is often handled by the media has more to do
with the media priorities of getting a story from a fashionable
tourist destination at peak season, rather than the seriousness of the
 problem.

Reena, being from Salcete, probably doesn't appreciate the manner in
which out-of-place elephants are brought in to places like Anjuna to
parade gullible tourists at a fee! But her comment on the elephant
doesn't mean she's off-clued generally about the wider issue of
paedophilia in Goa, media priorities in reporting the issue. Or,
there being nothing new in an issue that has been beaten to death
since the late 'nineties ... and the regular near-sensationalist
revival of this concern even while there is little done to tackle in
 its seriousness.

PS: I am also in daily communication with the parents of Stephen Bennett
who was murdered last month in very mysterious circumstances. They are

This is a serious issue. We have still not understood why someone
would want to kill Benett in Goa. Of course, with the way local
mafias work here, anything is possible. But there is still a lot more
 than meets the eye.

Anyone who has reported about Goa would also acknowledge that the life
of a foreigner is valued (here and elsewhere) much more higher than
that of a local (where life is cheap). My journo friends in Thailand
were saying the same is true when it came to deaths among foreign
tourists during the tsunami. There, the 'pecking order' in the world
of reporting was the King's nephew at the very top, followed by
foreign tourists (small numbers, but disproportionate coverage) and
 locals at the very bottom!

planning to visit Goa next week. The Goa newspapers have been strangely
  silent on the issue.

If someone said that the crime happened closer to Mumbai, and that Goa
papers tend to be both small in operation and small in their vision
(specially when it comes to investing resources in reporting...
probably one would get accused of defending sloppiness in the Goa
media! But that's the reality, though it's easy to get carried along
by the priorities set by the powerful and influential media
 organisations of the West! FN

Speaking of expressions peculiar to Goa, here is one
 I've always found fascinating.

 She is a homely girl.

Now, only in Goa does this expression mean the girl is
happiest serving pattices and making miskut while
simultaneously massaging her father-in-law's feet and
 feeding the pet dog, whitey.

This phrase used anywhere else in the world will earn
you (to use another Goan expression), one tight slap
or fattak. The word homely in general parlance means
 unattractive and shorn of embellishment.

Here is another phrase commonly used in Goa that I
 find intriguing.

 She's a simple girl.

Why is this phrase used as a compliment? When did it
become fashionable for a girl to be a simpleton? Why
shouldn't girls be eccentric, opinionated, forward,
 smart, glamourous, anything but simple?

Her main interest is Goan migration and has written books about Goans

She's recently written a fantastic book on the history of Vasai, a far
flung western suburb of Bombay, which under the Portuguese rule was called
Bacaim. It's worth a read.

Roland Francis wrote:

 For Fred Noronha:
I know that some of the books written by Goans that you mention from
time to time may be available from Jerry's and Norma's (is it called
the Old Goa bookstore) in Mapuca via a hardcopy catalog request.
However does anyone maintain a cyber catalog comprehensively listing
all books written by Goans in all parts of the world, contemporary and
past with info on how to get them?

For example I read the chapter on the Goa Inquistion written by Alfred
D'Mello (son of the famous Froilano D'Mello) on Jose Colaco's website.
It made for such rapt reading that it would be foolish not to read the
whole book. I wrote to the email address of the author, but it seems
that it was an old one as my note got bounced.

The Goa Inquisition has me hooked. I am gleaning info from many
websites on the subject and the more I read, the more my attention is
drawn to the subject. It seems a fact that the inquisition in Goa was
one of, if not the most cruel in the entire infamous history of the
inquisitions anywhere in the world and I grieve for my Hindu ancestors
who had to endure it. I sympatize with an RSS call for the Pope to
apologize for it, just as the Church finally apologized to the Jews,
the call made in retaliation for the visiting Pope's call to Indian
officials to loosen up on the anti-conversions laws of today's India.

Another one of definite interest to me would be Theresa Albuquerque's
book on the history of Bombay and Bombay Goans. Really good stuff from
synopses I read some time ago.

From a relatively neutral point of view I think Mario is winning the

supporters. Now even if these 10 supporters had 10 supporters (silent or

 supporting Santosh.

Not that democracy is the best method to decide these matters. But I would
suggest someone now makes a list of Mario's supporters. All those who agree
with his arguments and convictions. Once that figure has been arrived at
and all involved have cast their vote, and stated where they stand, then I
 have a suggestion.

All of you please start a fresh new Yahoo Group where you discuss only
matters of religion and American politics. And leave us others to discuss
Goa related issues. Its getting too sickening.

Evangelical atheism is as irritating as blind faith in Church dogma. I know
so many intelligent and articulate subscribers who don't participate in
Goan Cyberspace because of the constant wars between The Knights of the
 Church and The Godless Ones.

Leave us alone to discuss Goa!

 Cheers!

 Cecil

Well said, Arnold. I've been meaning to say just this for sometime now.
Have been a silent spectator to many a spat on GoaNet.. and often reaches
sickening heights. Also sad, because there's so much of talent and great brains
floating around- which makes me wonder if we really need to go on and on-arguing
ourselves silly, when we could put ourselves to better use. I used to hear of
the
infamous Goan trait of pulling the other down--this forum teems with examples
that
prove just this, if not more.
But I must admit, that GoaNet has, somewhere, got under my skin. Some of the
posters do have a terrific sense of humour. Some others turn out funny, quite
unintentionally!
Cheers!
Reena,
Bombay

It is observed that Goanet is rampant with unsavory diatribes, personal
attacks and put-downs which tend to vitiate the quality of debates and deflect
the focus from the real issues. If Goanet's post circle can be compared in
hyperbole to the Knights of the Round Table we have way too many Modreds and
 not enough Lancelots and Galahads.

Let's make the environment more benign in order to avoid the appearance of
 animosity.

 In GoaNet's august word exchangeMart
when opinions and facts are far apart
let's avoid vile language hurtful and tart
hurling affront and slur like a vicious dart
for such behavior belittles Writing's Art

 Cheers
