2012-10-04 Thread floriano

Well Eugene,

Floriano does not poke anyone in the ribs if that poke is not derserved.
And he also does not pat on the back when it has to be a hard knock.

There are times when floriano has gone way out of his way to pat Manohar
Parrikar on his back. One was when he sacked Babush as the TCP minister.
Likewise there are many instances when the pat came automatically. The
latest pat but a gurarded one was the 'New Shacks Policy' . But no sooner
did the fingertips forgot the typing on the keyboard, he gave caused him to
give him an ultimatum of dire consequences ( Writ Petition in the HC) if he
diluted the Shacks policy that he had put across.

You need not worry too much about floriano chaning his shoes when times are
different. He just loves the shoes that he is wearing, not the chappals
though :-))

Just see what's happening in West Bengal with Madame Mamata Banerjee.
When she was not in power she was a firebrand fighting known and
unknown demons of the ruling CPI government.
And now after taking over the government she's bellowing fire from her
mouth against her critics and had the audacity to have a professor who
posted a cartoon of her on the Internet arrested.
Her government is facing the music from many quarters and she's
showing signs of losing her temperament. The point I am making is that
it's easy to make noises from outside the power circle but once inside
it the person finds it hard to face the opponents. Parrikar's
predicament is an example. He doesn;t know how to come of the mining
mess and how to get the government to enforce "zero tolerance" to
corruption.
However, those in the opposition ranks in the assembly and in the
political arena must not keep quiet. Floriano should keep poking
Parrikar in the ribs so that the CM is kept on his toes.

Eugene Correia has hit the nail on the head. As Ana Maria Fernendes rightly
said Tavern Talk will remain just that 'talk' and it should be kept in the
tavern because it will go nowhere. Action is what is now required. If GSRP is
to succeed, then they must take action to be relevant in Contesting Elections
and winning them. This means that the party must get off the fence and convince
the Goan populace that they have a better alternative than the former
Governments and that they really mean to bring change to the system and put out
their vision and plans of how they will be able to achieve their goals. Not
superficial talk but truly visionary proposals backed up by realistic
actions. It is O.K . to tout Gandhi's Philosophy but act independently using
tact and skill intermingled with a strong sense of propose. We do agree that
Corruption must be rooted out but not with a big broom as Eugene has suggested
but with whips and lashes so that those unwilling to fall in line taste the
true consequences of their action. This is a tall order and needs people of
Guts and courage un-wavering in their aspirations to bring a true semblance of
dignity and order to this corrupt society. Is the GSRP willing and able to face
these challenges?

Manuel (Eddie) Tavares.

What I'd like to know is when was Goa granted independence.

AFAIK, Goa was invaded by the Indian armed forces and annexed Goa to India,
thereby subjecting Goa's dependence on New Delhi instead of Lisboa. The Indian
troops still occupy Goa (Panjim, Bambolim, Navelim, Vasco, Mormugao, and
Anjediva to name a few) and the Navy is still occupying Goa's airport at
Dabolim.

Gabriel.

PS Goa's ministers are not independent, even if voted in by Goans and
neo-Goans. They are still subject to their higher-ups in New Delhi, whatever be
their "colour".  Which is why I suspect we haven't seen the Manohar of the past
in the present setup.

One doesn't need Anna Hazare to inform Indians that politics is dirty
and the GSRP's spin on it doesn't help either. Since GSRP has been in
the government's seat it's easy to propose alternatives or ask Goans
to check the party's roadmap. Ana Maria Fernandes has said it that
taverna talk with remain just that -- talk. "Talking the talk" or
"walking the walk" or "walking the talk" are just plain words that
leaders of opposition parties speak but the reality turns out
differently when the same party or a coalition of parties are put into
power by the electorate.

How I wish the GSRP comes to power but wishful thinking is one thing
and reality is another. Why the Goan electorate hasn't fallen for the
ideals and goals that the party was formulated in its grandiose
Roadmap is a mystery. How long can Floriano bang the ghumott? Does its
sound reverbrate across the landscape.

Repeating the oft-quoted Gandhi quote, "Be the change" is no good.
The quote is the waterdown version of a para in one of his writings.
It's essential to read Gandhi's Collected Works. On this Gandhi
Jayanti we hear quotes from his books and writings. Herald has an
article by Soter that delves on his Hind Swaraj. I have read the
English version of Hind Swaraj (but gave my copy to a young
journalist), Gandhi's teaching vary on different subjects but they are
outdated. What was said before (mostly before) and after India's
independence doesn't ring true today. One thing that's true is the
downgrading of the political process. it's the price of Independence.
With the exception of Floriano and many Goans who seem unhappy at
Goa's own independence, the rest of Goans seem resigned to their
fates. The way is to look forward and not glance backwards. Goa's
Portuguese past has been consigned to the dustbin.

Gandhi's belief in spiritual rejuvenation and sanctity of human life
should be followed but it isn't easy. Political leaders are of a
different class today and since Floriana never had a chance to rule
one can't say for sure what he would do or follow.

Since India's independence we have killed Gandhi many times and on the
occasion of his birth centenary we should pay homage to his noble
souls and his lofty visions for an India free of the "dirt" that
envelopes politics and the corrupting influence of greed and power. It
would need a long broom to sweep India clean of all the mess and dump
it into the Indian ocean.
