PRESS RELEASE - >From Calangute to California to Cannes Goa Sudharop's journey continues
Since its inception in 2001, Goa Sudharop, a non-profit based in California and working for the betterment of Goa and Goans, has had many successes which we have humbly achieved through the support of our donors, volunteers, and well-wishers. On May 18, 2019, history will be made with another significant landmark achievement. Goa Sudharop and internationally renowned fashion designer Verma D'Mello have been selected by the Cannes Film and Fashion Festival to showcase their joint THREAD UP project in the highly acclaimed annual fashion show which includes Hollywood stars and other celebrities. The THREAD UP project helps and empowers low-income indigenous Goan women by providing them job-skills which helps them earn an income and economic independence, see information on the THREAD UP project at https://www.goasudharop.net/thread-up During the fashion show, international models will walk the runway wearing Verma's dresses and all proceeds from the sale of the dresses will be donated to the THREAD UP project. Verma D'Mello is based in Goa and passionately works to help low-income women and girls. On the eve of her departure from Goa to Cannes, Verma said "our rural Goan women possess great strength and spiritual powers of healing, replenishment, rejuvenation, revitalization. But when I encountered them in remote villages in Goa, I saw their lack of skills for even a basic livelihood, I was touched by how they are in need of recovery from a deteriorating life cycle of neglect. This realization led me to enter into a partnership with Goa Sudharop to teach them skills and transform them into the jewels of beauty they should be". Goa Sudharop would like to thank all the donors of the THREAD UP project. Goa Sudharop would also like to thank our Treasurer and Board Member Shilla Almeida and volunteers Harriet Ferens, Kimberly Gilbert, and Brendan Albuquerque who are travelling to Cannes at their own personal expense to help Verma and her team with the event.
