This is what Matanhy would have said, according to , Melissa Simoes, niece of late Matanhy Saldanha in her moving farewell speech N o words will express the pain I am going through. You were my guide, my mentor, my father who taught me to think and feel from my heart and never to be fussy about anything in life. I feel so lost without you. You taught me to think out of my comfort zone, the same way you did even though there was always an easy way out. You were always a voice of conscience, a voice of righteousness, of honesty, fraternity and values. You spent all your life trying to preserve the environment and nature’s beauty. Contesting and winning elections was never your priority but you only did so to raise issues. You hoped silently expecting no praises in glory. I was nervous and couldn’t sleep the day before election results but you told me: ‘ I am a happy man, I don’t care if I win or lose.’ That’s the time I took a pledge in my heart to make you proud. People from all walks of life are grieving as you no longer smile, talk, walk amongst us. Just as Jesus Christ said: " Daughters of Jerusalem don't grieve for me but grieve for yourselves and your children," today I know you will be saying: " Goans don’t weep for me but weep for yourselves and your children." I request each one of you to pledge to keep Matanyh’s legacy alive, keep fighting for Goa and Goan identity. I request you all to take an oath to keep Goa clean and beautiful. *I will miss your smile and beautiful conversations, lessons and stories. I will miss your approving lauds and smiles on my little things that made you proud. I will always love you."
