Mario observes:

Venantius,

I think your friends overlooked this new report by the BBC, which has hitherto
been a proponent of the hypothesis that climate change just had to be caused by
us puny humans:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/8299079.stm

Excerpt:

One thing is for sure. It seems the debate about what is causing global warming
is far from over. Indeed some would say it is hotting up.
[end of excerpt]

Also these reports or warming on some other planets, where I believe some of
our Goanetters may have homes:-))

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/02/070228-mars-warming.html

http://www.canadafreepress.com/2007/global-warming031307.htm

I would like your friends to tell us how curbing the CO2 emissions of only the
western economies - by 80% from 2000 levels by 2050, i.e. turning these
economies upside down - is going to overcome earth's growing smoking section.
This now includes Russia, China, India, Australia, Brazil and Mexico and every
less developed country.

Remember the goal is to curb the level of CO2 in the earth's atmosphere, CO2
being the plant food that is now being treated like some poisonous gas.

The dirty little secret is that man-made CO2 is only about 0.01% of the total
earth's atmosphere. That's equivalent to one paisa in Rs.100.00

Are you getting the picture here?

The extreme environmentalists say that:

1. Only the western economies must dial back their economies or turn them
completely upside down from current practices.

2. In the meantime none of the emerging economies will do anything significant.
If they do they will demand compensation from the same western economies who
will be struggling to comply with what is being demanded of them.

3. All this to curb 0.01% of the total atmosphere which is man-made CO2?

The policy questions are, a) will there be ANY measurable or noticeable effect
on the total atmosphere of the earth, and b) will the severe economic
disruptions in only the western economies that drive the rest of the world's
economies be worth achieving minimal or hardly any noticeable results.

For those who believe in conspiracies, there is more going on here than just a
concern abbout climate change.

*OCTOBER-NOVEMBER ISSUE: CLIMATE ANXIETY - Notes to the policy Gods**
*

*Adam J West* *Bilash Rai*Undoubtedly, dire predictions are no longer
droll. When over 10,000 heads of state, scientists, policy pushers and
*climate-change
wallahs *gather in Copenhagen this December (in the process generating more
than 16,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide at a meet that will cost upwards of USD
65 million), it will be crucial to separate the hot air from the rhetoric.

Helping the potential victims of climate change adapt to the *disastrous
transitions* in livelihoods must be a priority. This includes the technology
transfer from the West to the South. But prioritising adaptation by ‘buying
off’ some Southern countries would be wrong, for we would then be *‘adapting’
forever*, even as climate change accelerates in the absence of effective
mitigation efforts. The historical culpability of the West, going back to
the Industrial Revolution’s coal-burning, naturally requires moral
accountability. At the same time, the massive middle class of the South
seeking to emulate the consumerist North must not be allowed to have its
way. There must be a commitment to mitigate, by all of the West and the rich
of the South, including Southasia. Indeed, *no adaptation without
mitigation!
