Dear Rajan,

I usually try to ignore your venom, but you just can't expect to get away with just anything that you rant.

I didn't get into the GBA because I didn't have the time for it then, however, a lot of people did put in efforts that have bourne fruit. For over a week, until 2-3am, Patricia, Ritu, Solano and others had painstakingly complied an exhaustive list of land use changes from gazettes. This info practically saved the day when it helped individuals point out discrepancies in the village draft regional plans in Jan-Feb-March-April 2009. The GBA came out with a useful booklet, and conducted numerous sessions educating the villagers on how to identify discrepancies and complying with the formats the plans needed to be submitted to the TCP. Then there's the documentation, the presentations, interaction with media, photo documentation of violations, filing of criminal cases against the offenders, aiding those affected, working with the Government in preparing a new plan. All in all, the GBA did a lot more than simply photograph violations and obtain info through RTI.

The reason why the Regional plan was withdrawn was because of the pressure of
the people led by the GBA. Getting the government to draw up a fresh plan
requires both sides to sit at the same table and discuss. That's exactly what
happened. Now when this happens people want to criticize. Petty issues are made
large. If the Government want to play dirty, it should be held responsible, not
the GBA. Oscar may have lauded the chief minster in the past, but that was
then, when the government was doing something positive, and not now when the
Government is going against the people.

This politics of pulling each other down is terrible, and exactly what the
government needs to get their agenda across. When all was well with the GBA, it
proved to be a front that the Government could not ignore. Today, what do we
have? A lot of people that are upset with each other over petty issues and no
longer have the will to work together just because of irresponsible
statements, pulling each other down and comments like these. Right now, it
appears that there no unified front to fight the Government's decisions?
Besides the excess dosage of criticism, Do Mr. Rajan or Soter have any
solutions?

It's strange to see Soter criticize the GBA while being a member of it himself.

Clinton..

Dear Clinton,

More than you may realise, I appreciate your thought process.

It happened just days before the GBA was formed. Patricia was arrested for
blocking the cutting of a tree. Oscar broke the news to me at Don Bosco's
parking lot on my way to attend the seminar with the PRESS. When he saw the
actual glee in my eyes, he was stunned. I don't understand you he said.
You are happy??
Yes I had said, 'so happy that I would fire crackers if I had some with
me. And I had explained to him this way. The shit had reached chest high
all this while and rising. Now, with this arrest of Patricia, the shit has
jumped right under the nostrils. Now GOANS WILL ARISE. And Oscar had
understood and had relaxed.

It was a prophesy.

I would have been there a week later at the meet at Don Bosco's when GBA
was formed, cause I lead GEAC (Goa Environmental Action Group).
Unfortunately, I was interviewing some probable candidates for the 2007
Assembly Elections at Manvin's hotel and I couldn't make it.

But it broke my heart all the way when GBA declared itself 'APOLITICAL' and
remained neutral during 2007 elections. I knew then that GBA would
eventually fail in the eyes of the multitude of Goan who had flocked to the
Azad Maidan on 18 December 2006 to roar like ferocious lions and to send
the tails of all politicians between their legs. That roar has eventually
diminished to a meaw of a cat.

You are right. We Goans need a vision. Not a sword to cut each other to
pieces and gloat over it. We Goans must think in terms of politics. Those
who think 'apolitical' are, at best, visionless idlers and time passers who
will walk in and walk out from both camps at will. We Goans must decide
where, which side, we want to be and remain firmly planted there come what
may.

GBA's apolitical stance have brought in the same rascals with even bigger
margins. Is there any use crying over the spilt milk? Today what we see is
these same elected representatives hiking their perks and salaries and also
of the retired ones who might have not even lifted a finger for GOA while
Goa goes in stinking to kingdom come.

We Goans must ensure that we do not spill the milk once again in 2012 once
again. Goa

Afterall what runs our lives is POLITICS and nothing but POLITICS.
And it would be STUPID if we remained APOLITICAL. [I think Oscar has long
realised this fact]

That does not mean that everyone should run around to contest elections.
No sir.
Rather, every one should look for a candidate who will persue the programme
that people will want implemented, a no nonsense, written down, programme
for GOA.
And everyone collectively must go about electing that candidate,
irrespective of whether he comes from timbaktu or the moon.

In appreciation of your post

PS: National Political Parties have no solutions for Goa. All they want is
to have a good time at the cost of us Goans by keeping them divided. And sad
to say, we have fallen for that.

Floriano,
Its amazing to see people still learning the process after so many decades.
One can rarely be apolitical, perhaps egalitarian and genuinely gracious.

I cannot help but add here in humor: I may deeply desire and want to be
apolitical, as in not resort to being uncouth and manipulative, (easy for
mine to say) but announcing ones apolitical priorities would be asinine,
when dealing with the vulpine and the porcine. Perhaps only the divine could
prevent my being seen as an utter bovine, udder and all.

Perhaps it was never a hoax, but just slipping down a scree patch off of the

Dear Goans,
Have some leaders of the Goa Balchao Abhiyan brand fame got muck on their
faces? For this we need to read Herald of today 31st July 2009. Their honeymoon
with Digubab seems to be over. He now cares less for them as he has succeeded
in diffusing public wrath through his chellas in GBA. With the news that Mr.
Edgar Ribeiro has resigned from the government's steering committee on the RP,
a politically over smart orator, who a year ago was so impressed with the CM's
sincerity and adamant that GBA cooperates on the RP 2021, was finally
shamelessly heard spitting fire at a meeting opposite T.B Cunha's memorial in
Panaji. The orator has overnight started talking about green Goa when he was
cheering the mega projects just a few months ago saying that housing is
required. Can he publicly declare his stand on the 73rd and 74th Constitutional
Amendment regarding self-governments?
Truth has definitely prevailed after all the persecution to some of us who
refused to agree with GBA trusting and flirting with the government. But these
misguided Bachao kids thought they knew better. Now section 16 16A is coming
back to haunt the GBA. A repetition of the RP 2001 is expected with the RP
2021. Will these leaders now publicly admit that they have blundered or will
they shamelessly change gears and talk a different lingo and entertain the
public?
Peaceful Society and CSJP were ridiculed for not going ahead and accepting the
pilot project on the village planning with false claims that they did not want
to submit accounts. No one bothered to check the facts which are all on record.
A migrant editor joinned in the chorus of these chellas in maligning our names
as the saffron brigade in GBA. This tirade only strenghtened our resolve and
the reason we recall these malicious attributions is to bring them on record
and remind these traitors that we have not forgotten their stance one year ago.
But there is something called 'Truth' which manifests itself in due course.
Believers in 'Truth' may not be in a position to prove themselves right on the
spur of the movement and that is why politicians prosper as they operate with
short term goals of fooling the people by presenting 'Falsehood' as 'Truth'.
We have not forgotten 8th of June 2008 when Mr. Ribeiro shockingly told us to
stop demanding a proper planning process on the RP and to take what we get
because that is how a government works. That Village Panchayats have no right
for spatial planning, countering our claims on article 243ZD of the
Constitution. What has happened now? At every GBA meeting we have repeated that
we are dealing with bandits and rascals in the guise of a government. We
definitely respect the seniority and experience of Mr. Ribeiro in dealing with
governments but we definitely do not subscribe to his view that we should bow
down and accept the crumbs thrown to us by an insincere government. When we
bargain for 25% we land up getting nothing and that is what GBA and Ribeiro
have contributed to Goa. There is no need to mention that some professionals in
the name of GBA have greatly benefited in expanding their network within the
Town Country Planning depatments and the Village Panchayats under th
e guise of people friendly planning. We were shouting from day one that the
present TCP Act should be scrapped in toto but professionals were not
comfortable and wanted peice meal changes. Mr. Ribeiro at least had the guts to
resign but these professionals who have one foot in GBA and the other on
government committees continue to operate both ways. Who is fooling whom? We
are not professionals and neither would we want to belong to this club of
serpents. We just consider ourselves as unskilled Goans who have our eyes,
ears and minds open to the 'Truth'.
We have not changed. We have seen power and we have shunned power. But we will
not compromise the interests of Goa and our principles for personal gains. We
are not cowards to whisper against the government behind closed doors while
externally dealing and negotiating our professional deals with the very same
government. We did not have advisors when we dabbled in politics and got
cheated by politicians time and again only to learn from our mistakes
immediately. We have learnt to never expect a politician to be

My friend Soter D'Souza has every right to criticise those he
disagrees with or whose approaches he dislikes. But if he did so by
name, they would at least have the chance of responding. I presume
The Orator is our friend Dr Oscar Rebello, and The Non-Goan Editor
is my one-time mentor (way back in 1983) Rajan Narayan.

After closely covering the work of NGOs, activists and protest groups
in Goa over the past two-and-half decades, I could say that the
politics within the alternate movements in Goa are very intense, and
almost each one is convinced that their own approach is right and
everyone else is wrong.

The Truth isn't as objective as Soter makes it out to be though. It
often turns out into a matter of perception. While it is easy to
criticise the approaches of others, we could recongise that the others
are as convinced about the justness and appropriateness of their own
approach.

Given the kind of politicking we have in the dissent sector in Goa,
I'm sure that the Establishment as well as lobbies of every kind knows
only too well that, given enough time, they could just leave the
critics to tear each other down... and they (the Establishment, the
lobbies) will be back in business! FN

PS: I'm sure Soter will not take to this post very kindly when we meet
next at Cafe Prakash, but I think it needs to be said. I respect his
work too, but disagree strongly with spending so much energies in
pulling down each other.

To Goanet -

Thank you, Soter, for laying it all out.

When I first spoke out on Goanet of the games played by the
GBA leaders, it was met with shock in some quarters. After all,
the lead man had positioned himself as the prince of Goa, the
blue-eyed knight riding in to clean the Augean stables. Like
most Goans, I stood behind him and GBA on Dec 18, 2006 at
Azad Maidan. I believed then that these were men and
women driven by purpose. Alas, it soon became clear that
these GBA leaders were rotten fellows out to either aggrandize
themselves or in it for personal gain. I needed no special
insight to figure this out. All I had to do was keep my eyes open.

Soon the blue-eyed wonder himself doodled praises for Digu
in Gomantak Times (if I had not made an issue of it, it may
well have passed unnoticed). I couldn't believe it - here I
had with me all the evidence (collected through RTI on
personal time and nickel - a job the GBA should have been
doing) that pointed to exactly the opposite - that Digu and
his cohorts were taking Goa to the cleaners, and the man
charged with holding the govt's feet to the fire was singing
bhajans in honour of the govt! It just didn't compute.

I could understand the surprise of those Goans not in Goa
when I first fingered the GBA. After all, they had been
lead to believe all kinds of wonderful thinks about the
accomplishments the GBA was said to have chalked up.
But what about the fellows in Goa itself? Those loud impotent
sycophants who continued to carry water for the GBA and
its ex-convener? Now they want to change sides.
Sorry, berther, no dice. You have ZERO cred. These
