An ugly name for a lovely thing. The priest does not get up at all but sits in the lotus position clad in a white surplice with a saffron scarf round his shoulders. The tabla and the cymbals were played during Mass and I found the whole thing lovely, but most Goans complain that the Church is going Hindu, so these ceremonies have to be done cautiously. Does this still exist? Or does this not really mean a thing, not now and not in those days? I was just curious what some of you might say/find of this? Let me know, al the best, Martin Van Camp - Duarte Belgium, Europe

Most of the villagers were converts, as the women still wore a 'ghungat' (covered their head/face with the sari), they were barefoot in the church and normally sat on the floor. There were only a few benches. The mass was in Hindi. Years and years later visited friends in Bhopal and attended a mass sitting on the floor. The priest performed an aarti. Of course he did'nt sing 'Om Jai Jagdish', which is normally sung while performing an aarti. He didn't wear the normal vestements but a kurta/pyjama. The mass was completely Indianised. In many countries the mass is adapted to the customs of the people. In India after 'Peace be with you' we do a namaste and not shake hands, like in the western countries. Ana Maria de Souza-Goswami
