[Goanet] Was Matani Goa's Che Guevara?
In the late seventies my friends from Don Bosco would talk a lot about a Prof who had revolutionary ideas to help the people of Goa. His classes I believe were always filled with these stories. Later Matani came out to fight for various causes. The main one was the opposition to mechanical fishing vis a vis traditional fishing. Then there was the agitation against the Meta Strips etc. In Cuba and in the early 50's an Argentnian Doctor by the name of Ernesto Che Guevara fought side by side with the Cuban Revolution. Che used the AK, while Matani used ahimsa and satyagraha methods to achieve their goals. Both men also made mistakes Che tried to suppress the Catholic church while Matani tried to shoot from the shoulder of the BJP ( a fascist group). There is a third chap in the scene. Mao said revolution starts with the barrel of a gun. These are not pipedreams. Amchem Goem amkam zai! There was fire p*wer in his eyes, his deep voice and his conviction. He was indeed Goa's first anarchist. The year was 76 or 77the ramponkar's demo was attacked. He took a few blows. The news spread fast. He was the news. Ramonkars were to be noticed. They had a voice. He was the voice. MS inspired thousands of us coming of age in Goa: to love the land, environment, to be just, to be passionate. He was our hero, he was our voice. The ramponkar movement in some ways brought many of us out of the woodwork, to be conscious of social causes, to think of environment, in short to think, to be informed, to develop character as young people, to be confident and better citizens, to do the right thing. Those were the hippie days in Goi.of the peace movement. St. Xaviers Mumbai was buzzzing with activism, with protest movements, young people with conviction. What an all-round education that was! Whats up in Goa today? Can the young look up to anyone? Have they any sauce in their *** to be independent thinkers?
