Paradoxically, for a Muslim country, Turkey badly needs Benedict's visit for
political reasons. Turkey is pretty desperate to join the EU and even though
Benedict had rejected this idea at one stage, Turkey has to be seen as being
a mature democracy (with particular emphases on human rights including the
elimination of capital punishment and full acceptance of free speech), to
help its passage to the EU. To this end, I think Turkey will, of necessity,
stifle all its known hot heads before and during the Papal visit which in
turn will be most carefully orchestrated.

PS I have read the entire speech by Benedict. I believe he made an error of
judgement at this juncture on using a pretty unhelpful quote without
adequate and transparent qualification. But his apology should be enough. I
definitely cannot condone/support Muslim outrage over the Pope's speech. I
really am tired of fundamentalist groups whether Sikh, Muslim, Christian or
whatever, taking bigotry to extremes and especially trying to stifle free
speech--the most treasured thing we have at our disposal.
