Konknni versus Konkani: the cover story of Goan Observer.
Quote: Whether we like it or not, the stage is set for
another language war. This time, not between the Marathiwadis
and the Konkaniwadis, but between the Romi Konkaniwadis and
the Devanagari Konkaniwadis. A war which will be used by
politicians to divide Goans along communal lines. A war which
will, in the long run, only benefit the fanatics and lunatics
of the RSS and BJP. The former chief minister Manohar
Parrikar very insidiously exploited the disappointment and
the frustration and the anger of the minority community over
the 'stepmotherly' treatment given to Romi Konkani. (Rajan
Narayan in GO).

ROAD TO NOWHERE: Driven to Old Goa recently? If

you're half the way there you're holding on for
grim life as tarmac gives way to a treacherous
pot-holed track, and by the time you reach
bits of your car have fallen by the wayside
along with any illusions you might retain
about the sorry state of Goan affairs. -- VM de

CULINARY CORNER Bread putting *****
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is one of our family favorites and some of my
readers have requested the recipe so here it is:

Bread Pudding

Heat up four cups of milk and bring to a boil (please watch
this to make sure the milk does not burn a the bottom), Add
two slices of crumbled day old bread to the hot milk and let
soak till the milk cools. Break up the bread with your
hands.

Separately, beat six eggs and add two cups of sugar (please
reduce this to one cup if you are watching your sugar
intake). Beat until the mixture turns pale yellow. Slowly
pour the milk mixture into the eggs and stir to incorporate.
Put sugar in a baking pan and caramelize on top of the stove.

Let cool, then pour in the pudding mix. Take a bigger pan
and put into a hot oven. Pour about two or three cups of
boiling water into the bigger pan. Insert the pan with the
pudding into the bigger pan that has the water -- this is
called 'Bain Marie'. Lightly cover the pan with a silver
foil and bake for about 30 minutes. Insert a knife in the
center to check for doneness.
