BJP uses cash and kind to oust 'kashe' Rane: Goa's longest
serving 'khashe' Pratapsing Raoji Rane's 33-year-old
hegemony over Poriem constituency may crumble under the
weight of discontent and anger of villagers from Saleli and
neighbourhing areas. The BJP, sensing its biggest ever
opportunity to cash-in on the resentment, has planned
Operation Poriem in a scientific battle-like manner,
while a divided Congress was caught napping and
oscilating between confusion and silence. (GT)

BULLDOZER AND THE BIG BULL: Gomantak Times says its

GOA CUISINE FROM DAISY RODRIGUES:

ith its many varieties, rice is probably the most versatile grain of
all. Its unique flavor blends with, and complements, almost every food
imaginable. From meats to fruits and vegetables, rice adds flavor,
texture and nutritional benefits to any dish it accompanies.

When combined with legumes, rice becomes an excellent source of
protein.

"Today, this low-fat nutritional source of carbohydrates is a dietary
staple for six out of every 10 people worldwide" Literally hundreds of
rice varieties or types exist, but all can be classified as either
long-, medium- or short-grain. A basic rule of thumb: the shorter the
grain, the greater its tendency to have a starchy character and,
therefore, be stickier when cooked. The type of rice used in a given
cuisine really reflects cultural proclivities. Asians prefer stickier
rice as it is easier to eat according to their customs. Americans, for
the most part, prefer a separate, firm, non-sticky grain. Here are
some fabulous and easy to prepare rice dishes, I hope you get to try
them out. Please send me your feedback to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Chicken biryani 2 cups basmati rice, 4 cups chicken stock, 1
chicken, cut into large pieces, 2 tsp cumin powder, 3 cardamoms, 4
cloves, a piece of cinnamon, 2 tsp aniseeds, 2 tsp coriander seeds, 2
bay leaves, 4 big elaichi, 1/2 tsp red chili powder, 4 tsp salt, A
pinch of nutmeg powder 1/4 tsp yellow color, 1/4 tsp orange color, 1
big onion, finely sliced, 1 tbsp ghee, 1 pod of garlic, 1 tbsp
badam(almonds), 1 tbsp kishmish(raisins) Soak basmati rice for half
an hour. Make a bag of fine cloth with garlic, big elaichi, bay
leaves, aniseeds, and coriander. Cook chicken with 5 cups of water and
put masala bag in it. Cook till chicken becomes tender and only 4 cups
of water is remaining. Remove chicken pieces and masala bag,and keep
aside. Heat ghee in a heavy bottom pan add onions and fry, when it
becomes pink, add cardamoms and 1/2 tsp garam masala powder and 4 cups
of water. When it starts boiling add basmati rice and chicken pieces,
red chilli powder and cook till water is completely absorbed. Now add
badam and kishmish and both the colors and nutmeg powder.Allow to cook
on low heat till done.

Goan NRIs hoping against hope

HERALD, Jan 3, 2006

PANJIM, Jan 2: For the third time in Goa, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs)
will voice their expectations on a common platform in the hope of
receiving some response from the government.

The Gomant Vishwa Sammelan, a worldwide Goans convention organised by
the NRI Goa Facilitation Centre, sets stage on January 3 and 4, 2006 in
Panjim.

However with the last two conventions hel din 2004 and 2005, not much of
an outcome has been in sight, according to NRIs.

Says Zamir Khan, NRI from Saudi Arabia: "We openly discussed our
problems with the Chief Minister last year but nothing much has been
done." NRIs have general problems pertaining to land, health and
education, among others. We had demanded a single window to address our
problems, but this demand has not been met, says Khan.

The State Government has no concrete working for the NRIs, opnines Peter
D'Souza, also from Saudi Arabia.

The government needs to introduce projects and proposals for the NRis
and go to the point of sale, just like Kerala or Andhra Pradesh, where
the State government reaches out to the NRIs worldwide, opines D'Souza.

As for these conventions, they are held once or twice and then
forgotten, says D'Souza. You can't expect anything concrete from such
conventions, he says.

"The fact is that both sides are not serious," he opines. The NRIs have
a poor attendance due to the timings of the conventions and the
government is not strongly interested, says D'Souza.

No doubt that the NRI centre is in its initial stages. But with such
conventions, we plan direct NRI involvement in the State, says Dinar
Bhatkar, chief coordinator, NRI Facilitation Centre.

We have recommended to the government that a survey be done on issues
pertaining to NRIs, says Bhatkar.

However, the biggest stumbling block after the convention in January
last year was the change in government, which brought things to a
standstill, says Bhatkar. (ENDS)
