He was baptized as Fernando de Bulhoes * Santo Antonio is the most popular saint in Goa. Among the many shrines built in his honour, the most prominent in South Salcete is the St. Anthony's Chapel at Deussua in Chinchinim where for Tuesday's masses it is filled to its capacity by the devotees. This chapel has been beautifully designed by Achitect Sarto Almeida, brother of Architect Tony Almeida of Dar es Salaam. * In 1543, when Bardez and Salcete were added to Ilhas (ie islands in Portuguese language) the members of the Franciscan Order were entrusted with the evangelization of Bardez and the Jesuits were allotted Salcete for the same purpose. * In 1758 there was an unsuccessful attempt to assassinte King Dom Jose of Portugal. The members of the Society of Jesus (which was Spanish in character) were implicated in the plot by the Portuguese Prime Minister the Marques de Pombal (full name: Sebastiao Jose de Carvalho e Melo) who ordered them to leave Portugal and colonies. * It is said that almost 200 years later the Jesuits returned to Goa. They took over Union High School behind Margao Police Station and renamed it Loyola High School. * When a plague descended upon the inhabitants of Old Goa, the Portuguese were toying with the idea of transferring the capital to Vasco but in the end decided on Panjim. * In 1661 Princess Catarina was given in marriage to King Charles the second of England. As a dowry the Portuguese handed over Bombaim to the British. * Bombay in those days was not a continuous stretch of land as it is today but a sort of a cluster of eight islands with swamps in between them. At full tide the swamps were flooded and it looked like an extension of the sea. The British were to fill the swamps later probably with the earth scooped from North Bombay. The resultant shallow depressions were flooded with stagnant waters as a result of excessive rains on the 26 July last. The names of islands are: Colaba, Girgaum, Malabar Hill, Mazagon, Worli, Parel, Mahim and Sion. * During the Napoleonic Wars, Goa was briefly occupied by the British troops from 1797 to 1813. * This occupation led to the discovery by the British that Goans knew how to bake bread, the skill which was then unknown to Indians of British held territories. * Goans began emigrating to Bombay to establish bakeries. Goans introduced a rare delicacy, at that point in time, i.e. hot bread laced with butter mhaska/pao which degenarated in maka/pau. * It is said that Goans started emigrating to Zanzibar sometime in the late 19th century. In those days Goans travelled by dhow, i.e. sailing ships. To go back to the basics, which will give you a better picture: In 1995 I left Germany (where I'm residing since 1963) to visit my family in Goa, as is so usual for expats. But at the Dabolim Airport I was stopped, checked and then put on the same plane and packed off back to Germany. The immigration officer (Mr. Alan de Sa) found nothing untoward with my self or my papers but he had to do his duty. Only a Goan can imagine the pain this could bring, to see Goa right before your eyes and then being stopped and then being told to go back to where you came from. Try it! Since then (1995) I've written nearly about 30 letters to all the higher-ups from the President of India to Mr. Pratapsingh Rane the then, and present Chief Minister of Goa, asking them what was the matter? I am a peaceful citizen and have never committed a crime or belonged to any extremist or anti-Indian organisation I told them. Till today I haven't received a single word to any of my letter or petitions from any one of these gentlemen. To get a balanced picture, however, it must be said that from the year 2000 I did manage to receive absolution and get temporary visas but only after interminable delays and uncertainties. In order to unravel the mystery behind all this "slow virus" that's eating into my frail health, I approached our then Hon'ble MP Mr. Eduardo Faleiro last year through whose intervention I got an instant visa last year but no clarification as to what my sin was. I had also approached our present Ho= n'ble Chief Minister Dr. Willie de Souza last year who also intervened on my behalf and said its a shame that such things should happen to a "son of the soil". Lovely words these were but hasn't helped me to get the asked for visa this yet. To get to your main point. Did I apply to the Embassy here in Berlin? Of course, I did. With all the details. And was told kindly to apply to the Consulate General here in Frankfurt with the addendum advising me to approach any Court in India if I had anything to redress! They (Mr. Reddy) couldn't help me from Berlin. So I approached the Consulate General here in July, 2005 as I did in the year 2000 and am again awaiting absolution, this time I don't know through which patron's blessings or for which sin I shall NOT be getting it. As Mr. Faleiro tells me, he's no longer MP and so he cannot help me. Basta! The emails I send to Dr. de Souza, too, begging for his intervention, remain unanswered to this date. So, there you are. My visa application made to the Indian Consulate General here in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, in July 2000, remains collecting dust. I give you the following data in case you wish to follow up: The Consul General (Mr.Ram Singh) Friedrich-Ebert-Anlage 26, 60325 Frankfurt am Main; Tel: 0049-69-1530050; Fax 0049-69-554125; e-mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]; Visa Info: 0049-69-15300 546 I would certainly be highly thankful if you could see a way to help me. Or at least find out what the case is behind my case. Any or all questions, I'll be only too glad to answer. Aiz aum, falea tum. Kind regards, Rodolfo de Sousa --------------------------------------------------------------- GOA POSITIVE INITIATIVES AND HAPPENINGS ----------------------------------------------------------------- LONG-TIME GOANETTER PATRICE REMENS from the Netherlands has this to say in response to builder-pressures on Goa: Reading this and thinking of what I wrote, I think for the Navhind Times, now almost nine years ago (time flies), not only has nothing changed, but how must worse must it have get? I mean, I was saying then that Goa was basically finished, but there is apparently no limit to what is left to destroy (makes sense, because when I was there last time, in 2002, it was still amazingly beautiful - and probably still is). I was yesterday and the day before at WSFII (http://www.okfn.org/wsfii)( serving Turkish Tea, of course), and there was Arun Mehta besides many other luminaries. Seems WSFII is coming to Goa, at some stage (in 2006) and in some form. Apparently, one of the community WiFi guys ... lives in Goa, though he's Dutch: Fred Puck. The main, and big, event is supposed to be in Bangalore, at Visthar. Where do you get the energy to compile this extensive digest -- or do you have a 'program' doing it? And thanks for the recipe (Moroccan lamb), I was just thinking making the chicken version for my 'cooking-for-the-students' bout on Oct 17. Gonna be the lamb now... --------------------------------------------------------------- LANGUAGE ISSUES... KONKANI: ----------------------------------------------------------------- SAVE KONKANI FROM THE KONKANIWADIS: Jose Colaco <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes in response to Joseph Zuzarte's earlier article: "Well said Joseph. We can all learn from How the English language has come to prosper, and How Latin and Sanskrit joined Pali etc into semi-oblivion. The sad part about it is that those who claim to be fighting *for* Konkani are actually killing it by way of suffocation......and those same Konkani-Mogis don't have the sense to understand that. We ourselves have an outstanding project (since 2004) to collate Luso-Goan words which have been decapitated forceably from Konkani -- never mind the fact that Goans still use them in their spoken Konkani. The hope (I am told) is that once this generation departs, the next generation wouldn't be the wiser anyway..... and that those Luso-Goan words will disappear by way of suppression. So, I suggest, will spoken Konkani. And the same Konkani mogis will wonder WHY Goans use English in their day to day activities instead of Konkani. Just my view. Elroy Fernandes <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> on 'Save Konkani...': To start with all indian languages have come from Sanskrit, also change is the only constant. So stop fighting change and get with it FORMER GOA UNIVERSITY associate professor Dr (Fr) William Robert Da Silva <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> takes up the issue of Konkani, script and related issues via the Goa Research Net. He says: "However, this game has been vitiated in recent past. There is no rational argument, but political expediency, communal surcharge and distortion of historical facts. Are Jesuits the pioneers of Konkani in Goa? Nonsense. They were not. There were Franciscans, Carmelites and others. Is Romi the first script which placed Konkani on the map of the world? Nonsense. It was Goykanadi of the Vijayanagara kingdom or empire which posted kanadi into writing Kon Konkani." See http://groups.yahoo.com/group/goa-research-net LANGUAGE PACK FOR KONKANI FROM MICROSOFT: Sachin Filinto <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> informs that last week Microsoft released a language pack for Konkani (Devnagiri script). It can be downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=kok&FamilyID=0db2e8f9-79c4-4625-a07a-0cc1b341be7c You need to be a buyer of Microsoft's products to get access to this. DR TEOTONIO R DE SOUZA RESPONDS: Most Goan youngsters at schools and colleges may find it a challenging alternative. What will be impact of this development upon the creation of standard Konkani, be it in whatever script? The available interface seems to be in Antruzi version, with axil'lo and naxil'lo! ------------------------------------------------------------------- CULINARY CORNER Lamb -- Mexico Chile with Lamb ------------------------------------------------------------------- Mexico Chile with Lamb: 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, 2 pounds lamb (cubed), 1 1/2 medium onions (chopped), 4 garlic cloves (minced ), 8 New Mexico, Anaheim or Poblano chilies (roasted), 1 (8) ounce tomato sauce can, 2 jalapenos or serrano chili, 1 teaspoon dried oregano, 1/4 teaspoon sage, dried, 1/3 cup fresh cilantro(chopped), 1 teaspoon salt or to taste. In a large, deep skillet, heat the oil and cook the lamb until browned on all sides. If the skillet is large enough, add the onion and garlic and cook 5 minutes longer, then transfer to a large pot. If the skillet is not large enough, remove the lamb to a large pot. Add additional oil to the skillet, if needed. Saute the onion and garlic for 5 minutes, then add to the lamb. Add about 3 cups water. Bring the stew to a boil, reduce heat and simmer at least 1 1/2 hours. Add water if needed. While the lamb is simmering, roast, peel and seed the green chilies. Chop half the chilies and add to the stew. Put the other half in a blender or food processor with the tomato sauce and puree until smooth. Add the puree to the stew, along with the jalapenos or serranos, the oregano, and sage. About 10 minutes before the chili is done, add the fresh cilantro and salt. Taste and adjust seasonings. ------------------------------------------------------------------- ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ||g |||o |||a |||n |||e |||t || Issue compiled by ||__|||__|||__|||__|||__|||__|| Frederick Noronha |/__\|/__\|/__\|/__\|/__\|/__\| [EMAIL PROTECTED] Copyleft Goanet 2005 http://www.creativecommons.org You may reproduce this ezine in its entirety, with credits retained. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Goanet, the net-worker of all networks.
