He was born in Aldona but lived most of his life in Mumbai where he became India's answer to Louis Armstrong.. He sang like him besides playing the trumpet. Besides having one of the most sought after big bands in Mumbai, he was also assistant music director to C. Ramachandran and wrote the song O Gori Gori, besides many many more. Credits were only given to the main director, hence this is a lesser known fact. His daughter Yvonne, married my dad Braz Gonsalves, Indias best jazz saxophonist, who was born and studied music under his father in Neura, Ilhas, Goa. When Braz first moved to Mumbai he met Chic who encouraged him and saw great potential in the young Braz. Chic passed just before my parents were married in 1967, so I, his first grand child never saw him. Most of his children and their spouses are musicians. Yvonne, my mom, still sings at a jazz club called Cantare in Saligao on Mondays. Kitu his youngest also lives in Goa and performs with her husband Steve. His oldest Ursula also a jazz singer lives is Mumbai, and is married to Jazz pianist Johnny Fernandes. His sons Philip and Irwin play the bass guitar and drums respectively
