[Goanet-News] Two very rainy (and extremely windy) days in Goa

2017-07-19 Thread Frederick FN Noronha * फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या * فريدريك نورونيا
Tuesday and Wednesday (July 18-19, 2017) were rather windy days here in
Goa... Tuesday afternoon particularly saw a lot of storm-like rain. Dunno
if that's the right term, but that's how it hit us. As usual, there don't
seem to have been any warnings of what was in store.

On Monday, the local Met office came out with its weather forecast "for
five days" and said "light to moderate rain/thundershowers is (sic) most
likely to occur at most places over Goa state during (the) next five
days". Of course, this is the monsoons, so it's going to be "light to
moderate rain/thundershowers". That is a vague choice of rain possibilities.

On June 18 (a bit too late), it warned that "winds will be westerly to
south westerly speed 45-50 kmph temporarily reaching 60 kmph in
gust/squall".

For much of the season, we've been having a strange set of rains here, with
short showers of five-minutes rain interspersed with sunny (almost summer)
spells. FN

wanted to do something for a living that he really liked

Carl Rodrigues says that his family and friends all thought he had lost his
mind.

"Everybody thought I had gone completely nuts," he says. "They were saying
'what's wrong with this guy? Is he having a hippy moment?'."

Mr Rodrigues, a successful IT consultant, had woken up one day and decided
to quit the day job.

Instead of doing lucrative work for other people, he was going to retire to
his basement and develop a best-selling computer product.

The significant problem was that he didn't have any ideas. But to the worry
of his wife, and scorn of his mother-in-law - who lived with them - he was
undeterred.

So back in 2001 he shut himself away beneath his house in the Canadian city
of Mississauga, and started to try to dream up something.

"My goal was that I wanted to see what I could produce if I did something I
really liked," he says.

"I didn't know what I was going to do, but I thought I would give it a
shot."

After a month of working "crazy hours", Mr Rodrigues had come up with his
first fully formed idea - a software system that allowed the user to
control his or her mobile phone from their laptop.
[image: Carl Rodrigues]Image copyrightCARL RODRIGUESImage captionMr
Rodrigues squirreled himself away in his basement

Naming his company Soti, sales of the system started to grow slowly, until
12 months later Mr Rodrigues got a phone call out of the blue from one of
the UK's largest supermarket groups.

The firm didn't want to sell the system to its customers, instead it wanted
to incorporate it into its operations, so staff could better communicate
and pass on data and other information.

Mr Rodrigues, now 55 and Soti's chief executive, says: "I was still in my
basement when I got a call from the company, saying they would like to
place an order.

"I don't think they realised that they were talking to just one guy in a
basement, so when the person asked to speak to someone in sales I came back
on the phone with a slightly different tone."

The little ruse worked, and the UK firm placed a "huge order" for 20,000
units.
[image: Man using Soti software]Image copyrightSOTIImage captionThe firm
specialises in mobile technology software systems

Soti has never looked back; and while most people have never heard of the
firm - because it sells its mobile technology software systems to companies
instead of consumers - it today has annual revenues of $80m (£62m).

This is despite Mr Rodrigues not needing any external investment. The
business remains 100% owned by him and his wife.

Continuing to turn down numerous takeover bids, including an undisclosed
offer from Microsoft in 2006, the Canadian business leader instead says he
wants Soti to "become as big as they get" in the computer world.

Born in Pakistan to a Roman Catholic family that had its roots in the
former Portuguese colony of Goa on India's west coast, Mr Rodrigues
emigrated to Canada with his parents and four siblings when he was 11.

The decision to leave Pakistan was Mr Rodrigues' mother's. He says she was
increasingly concerned at political and social instability in the country
in the early 1970s.

He says: "Dad was happy in Pakistan, but mum wanted us kids to have a nice
safe place to grow up in, and have a good education."

the early 1970s

As the family spoke English at home, Mr Rodrigues says he had no problem
settling in Toronto. He even liked the significantly colder weather.

"I was dying to see snow," he says. "This magical thing I had never seen."

After "doing enough at school to go to university", Mr Rodrigues did a
degree in computer science and mathematics at the University of Toronto.

He then spent a number of years working as a consultant, before launching
Soti in 2001.

Today the company is valued at more than $1bn (£770m), and has 17,000
business customers around the world, and 700 employees across 22 countries.

Instead of still being based in Mr Rodrigues' basement, its headquarters is
split across two buildings in Mississauga, which borders Toronto in the
Canadian province of Ontario.

A stitch in time: The Indian roots of Uganda's gomesi

As the tale goes, the gomesi, a traditional dress worn by Ugandan women,
was designed by a Goan tailor

Photo: Nishitha Shrivastava
Nishitha Shrivastava

Her vintage parlour, overlooking the circuitous succulents in the garden,
would fit right into a Dicken’s novel. Photo frames and plaques tell
stories of a life well spent. Joyce Mpanga (84) has been part of Ugandan
politics since the 1960s, a member of Parliament (MP) and deputy
headmistress at the prestigious Gayaza High School. She also travelled to
the US to pursue a master’s degree in education from Indiana University,
Bloomington, in 1961, a path trodden by few.

But what she enjoys most is sharing stories of Ugandan culture. Like the
one about how a pair of Goan tailors changed the social fabric of
Uganda—literally.

“We used to wear a suuka, which was initially made from bark cloth, and
then modified to cotton. It was a piece wrapped around your chest, with
something to cinch it at the waist,” she says.

But in 1905, Mpanga says, when the Church Missionary Society (CMS) started
Gayaza, an all-girl boarding school, the suuka did not find favour with the
missionaries. (Incidentally, the CMS supposedly set up the school after it
started a school for boys in Mengo, Kampala, so that the educated boys
could find educated girls to marry.) And so, the Gomes brothers were called
in to design a uniform—one that would go on to become Uganda's de facto
national dress.

“The school was headed by women who were Victorian. Bare shoulders were
frowned upon. Plus, the suuka would often come undone when the girls did
any physical work. So, the first British headmistress, Alfreda Allen,
called for a Goan tailor, Gomes. They came up with the idea of wearing a
bolero over the suuka. But this was inconvenient too. Then Gomes started
stitching this bolero over the suuka, this is the style we still follow.
The puffed sleeves is a Victorian influence on the dress,” says Mpanga.

It is believed that Allen invited the older of the two Gomes brothers,
Anton Gloria, to discuss the design for the uniform. It was his idea to add
a yoke to the dress, to address the problem of unraveling. Later, the
younger brother, Caetano Milagres, added a sash around the waist, which is
still part of the current design.

The gomesi (also called the busuuti), named after its Goan inventor, today
is very important, both socially and culturally, in Uganda.

“The gomesi is a mark of respect, and must be worn at all social
engagements, such as kwanjula (an introduction ceremony before marriage),
marriage, funeral or even when you are meeting elders in the family,” says
Florence Kiwanuka, speaker at the Parliament of the Buganda Kingdom, adding
that she remembers an introduction ceremony that went awry because a young
girl from the entourage had not worn a gomesi.

Maggi Kigozi, the face of Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) for more than a
decade, has slightly different take. The gomesi, stitched up to seven
metres of cloth, isn't the most convenient form of clothing, bordering on
the unmanageable, says Kigozi, clad in one of her bespoke suits (many from
India). Nevertheless, she is extremely proud of her Baganda roots.

“The significance of the gomesi became more pronounced after our kabaka
(king) returned from exile. The dress is beautiful and elegant, and
portrays the African culture. Today, gomesis are better colour-coordinated,
and even have matching buttons and accessories,” says Kigozi.

In addition to the six-odd metres used for the dress, there is an
additional layer forming the base, which is the traditional Ugandan kikoyi
fabric.

Joyce Sebugwawo, mayor of one of five divisions of the Kampala Capital City
Authority, says, “You tie a kikoy, or maybe two, under the gomesi to give
you better shape, since it makes your hips look broader. It is a unique
dress, and a matter of respect in our culture. The process of wearing a
gomesi can be cumbersome, so you have to really believe in your culture to
wear it everyday."

Sebugwawo has worn a gomesi every single day, to work and to every social
gathering, since 1994, because she wanted to "preserve her culture, and
lead by example".

For Celestine Katongole, a lecturer at Makerere University Business School
and founder of Sights & Sounds of Africa Safaris, the gomesi is synonymous
with his mother.

“All her life, from the time I first saw her till she passed on, my mother
wore a gomesi. What is so clear to me, even years after her passing, her
gomesi was our blanket at night for a long time. To me, the gomesi was much
more than just my mother’s dress, it was a source of warmth at night, and a
piece that raised us,” says Katongole.

According to him, not wearing a gomesi is almost considered "indecent" by
some in Ugandan society. However, Katongole also says he's seen a decline
in its popularity, especially among the younger generation.

“As a product, the gomesi could have gone through

Goan diaspora convers its concerns over State to CM

Times News Network

Panaji: The ill-effects of mass tourism, water shortages in
the dry months, unregulated disposal of mining waste and
threat to animal life as a result of unregulated garbage
disposal are among the concerns of the Goan diaspora
presented to chief minister Manohar Parrikar on Wednesday
evening.

Edgar Valles, president of Lisbon-based Casa de Goa, an
association of overseas Goans, presented the issues which
were discussed at the recently-concluded international
conference on 'Sustainable development of Goa in the 21st
century'.

Tourism is becoming a major threat to the quality of life for
certain segments of the population. "Deforestation, good
quality agricultural land declassification, absence of
sustainable waste disposal practices all the way to access
impediments to the permanent residents of Goa (for instance,
to public beaches) are among unsustainable practices that are
incumbent on authorities to thwart," states one of the
conclusions.

The association suggests working with Portgual, which has
experience in controlling the negative impact of mass tourism
and promoting promising modes such as agro-tourism.

When the state has 11 reivers with excellent water quality
where the monsoon can satisfy the water consumption of the
state, why should there be tankers supplying water, was
another concern. The paper also highlighted the plastic waste
accumulating and floating in the rivers.

Where Goa's built and intangible heritage is concerned, the
association suggested archiving this as part of a research
project where Goa University and one or more Portuguese
universities could work together.

A PORTUGUESE WRITER IN GOA, 18TH CENTURY: Manuel Maria
Barbosa du Bocage (1765-1805) was a Portuguese Neoclassic
poet, writing at the beginning of his career under the pen
name Elmano Sadino. Via the Goa-Research-Net
[http://groups.yahoo.com/group/goa-research-net] scholar
Susana Sardo [ssa...@ua.pt] reminds us that Bocage also spent
some of his time in Goa, though probably not very happily!
See the Wikipedia page: "n 1786 he was appointed
guarda-marinha in the Portuguese India navy, and he reached
Goa by way of the colony of Brazil in October. There he came
into an ignorant society full of petty intrigue, where his
particular talents found no scope to display themselves; the
glamour of the East left him unmoved and the climate brought
on a serious illness. In these circumstances he compared the
heroic traditions of Portugal in Asia, which had induced him
to leave home, with the reality, and wrote his satirical
sonnets on The Decadence of the Portuguese Empire in Asia,
and those addressed to Afonso de Albuquerque and D. João de
Castro. The irritation caused by these satires, together with
rivalries in love affairs, made it advisable for him to leave
Goa, and early in 1789 he obtained the post of lieutenant of
the infantry company at Damão, India; but he promptly
deserted and made his way to Macau, where he arrived in
July–August. According to a modern tradition much of the "Os
Lusíadas" had been written there, and Bocage probably
travelled to China under the influence of another classic
Portuguese poet, Luís de Camões, to whose life and
misfortunes he loved to compare his own. Though he escaped
the penalty of his desertion, he had no resources and lived
on friends, whose help enabled him to return to Lisbon in the
middle of the following year."

THE EARLY POST CARDS: The Early Post Cards of the British
East Africa Protectorate/Kenya [From Mervyn Maciel
mervynels.watuwasha...@gmail.com ]: I wonder if any of our
GBC members with East Africa connections have heard of this
200-page book published in 2008 by the East Africa Study
Circle? It is a treasure trove of memories and lists some
1200 post cards. I was interested to see that many of these
cards were produced by Goan publishers like:

Coutinho & Sons, Photographers, Mombasa 1906
D.V. Figueira, Mombasa 1905
Felix Coutinho, Mombasa 1912
T.A. Costa, Photographer, Mombasa1916
D. Evaristo Coutinho, Mombasa,1929

I was very fortunate to obtain a copy of this book from the
late author's (Clive Evans) wife. If anyone is interested,
the ISBN Number is: 0 9515865 64

Here is a snapshot of some of the postcards in this book:

* Vasco de Gama Street, Mombasa 1904 (in one case Vasco is
  spelt Wasco!)
* Government House, Nairobi, 1905
* Trolley Locomotives, Mombasa 1907
* Pot Making, Kikuyu 1907
and hundreds more very interesting cards!

I understand that earlier postcard volumes on Uganda &
Zanzibar were published in 2003 & 2005.

SHORT STORIES, ANYONE? GEAR UP FOR THIS UPCOMING CONTEST:
Fundação Oriente is to soon organise its short story

in its fourth edition and "intends to revive the old
tradition of short stories that in the past were transmitted
orally, published in newspapers or broadcast."
It is aimed at residents of Goa -- both amateur and
professional writers. Its earlier output has been published
in three anthologies so far, including *Monsoon Winds*, the
latest.
This year, submissions are to be accepted from Aug 1 to Oct
3, 2017. A formal announcement is due shortly. Prizes will be
of Rs.20,000 (Late Alban Couto Prize), Rs.15,000 (Semana da
Cultura Indo Portuguesa Prize) and Rs.10,000 (Fundação
Oriente Prize). The best 25 stories submitted will be
published in an anthology.
As part of the GSSC, a workshop will be held. The Creative
Fiction Writing and Publishing Workshop will be conducted on
June 30-July 1-July 2 at Fundação Oriente. This is an early
update, the formal announcement should be on its way soon
in a couple of days time probably.

WHY THE CHIPS ARE DOWN FOR GOA CHIEF MINISTER MANOHAR
PARRIKAR IN ROW OVER OFFSHORE CASINOS: Ironically, it was
Parrikar who may have fired the first salvo at the offshore
casinos in his days as an opposition leader. The first
offshore casino came to Goa in 2007, and by 2012 Parrikar
became their most prominent critic, vowing to drive them out
of the Mandovi. However, he and his successor Laxmikant
Parsekar did nothing to close down the casinos when the BJP
came to power in 2012. For two years, Parrikar delayed a
decision on casinos although he did ban the transfer of
casino licences and restricted entry to only tourists-a rule
generally flouted (when india today visited the casinos, we
found no ID cards were being checked to determine whether the
visitors were tourists). Thanks to Joseph Rebello for the link.

Sugar is a free and open source computer desktop environment
designed for interactive learning by children. Developed as
part of the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) project, Sugar was
the default interface on OLPC XO-1 laptop computers. The OLPC
XO-1.5 and later provided the option of either the Gnome or
Sugar interfaces. Sugar is available as a Live CD, as Live
USB, a package installable through several GNU/Linux
distributions. It can run in a GNU/Linux virtual machine
under Windows and Mac OS. Unlike most other desktop
environments, Sugar does not use the "desktop", "folder" and
"window" metaphors. Instead, Sugar's default full-screen
activities require users to focus on only one program at a
time. Sugar implements a journal which automatically saves
the user's running program session and allows them to later
use an interface to pull up their past works by date,
activity used, or file type.

[Goanet-News] DEATH: Dr Teresa Albuquerque, historian and author of many texts on Goa

2017-06-12 Thread Frederick FN Noronha फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या *فريدريك نورونيا
Dr Teresa Albuquerque, historian and author of many books on Goa and
related topics, passed away this morning in Bombay (Mumbai), I was told of
this by Brian Mendonca ('Last Bus to Vasco').

Dr Teresa took writing on Goa seriously, as is obvious from this
(incomplete) list of her many works on the place: http://bit.ly/2rhbOUU

She wrote history in a very down-to-earth style, one which attracted the
interest of the lay reader too. We at Goa,1556 were privileged to have
published her *Goan Pioneers in Bombay* title a few years ago. Though in
her eighties, and facing some health issues, she was determined to share
her work and spread understanding on issues she had worked on.

Condolences to the family, and here's hoping that her contribution to
writing on Goa and its diaspora is commemorated in some way.

[Goanet-News] WatchingTheGoaWeather: Heavy rain since this morning... 05312017

2017-05-31 Thread Frederick FN Noronha * फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या * فريدريك نورونيا
We've had some spells of heavy rain and wind since this morning, Wednesday,
May 31, 2017,

This came after a bit of unusual weather. (It was not the kind of
thunder/lightning or warm days and evening thunder and rain that marks the
onset of the monsoon, but showers which lasted for a few minutes a couple
of days ago in Saligao and maybe for half an hour at the Panjim-Miramar
area.)

Probably this was due to Cyclone Mora which has affected life severely in
other parts of South Asia, near Bangladesh and the North East India areas.

Some days back, the death toll in Sri Lanka crossed three digit figures.
Actually, near 200 according to CBC News, watching the story from distant
Canada where some of you might be reading this:
http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/sri-lanka-flooding-mudslides-1.4135542

Here's hoping all goes well this monsoon, and the weather extremities don't
cause too much of a disclocation of life here. Share your updates and
observations.

AccuWeather forecasts for Goa around these days include: [
https://www.accuweather.com/en/in/ella/2798759/weather-forecast/2798759]

* Heavy thunderstorm this afternoon 31 deg C high (May 31)
* Period of rain and a thunderstorm tonight 26 deg C low (May 31).
* Tomorrow June 1, a morning thunderstorm or two 31 deg C high.

[Goanet-News] When Indian media blamed the Portuguese for a bridge collapse in Goa Like any good data entry operator, the scribe is typing out whatever is being fed by the administration.

2017-05-19 Thread Frederick FN Noronha फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या *فريدريك نورونيا
When Indian media blamed the Portuguese for a bridge collapse in Goa

Like any good data entry operator, the scribe is typing out whatever is
being fed by the administration.

Conspiracy theories are easy to build, especially when the atmosphere is so
conducive that it seems to be almost begging for it. It is like when
humidity is at its peak someone reporting rain is believed unquestioningly.
But what is ignored is that the high level of humidity can be indicative of
diametrically-opposing pieces of information.

High humidity makes it plausible for it to rain - so reports of rain must
be true

or

High humidity makes it plausible for it to rain - so untrue reports of rain
can easily be passed of as being true.

So the lacuna in the logic, that when humidity is high - rain is expected,
would be that the news of rain could be equally as true as untrue. Likewise
conspiracy theories flourish when the atmosphere is conducive, meaning a
theory has a 50 per cent chance of being baseless as half a chance of being
justified.

A bridge collapsed in Goa at around 6.30pm on Thursday, May 18, 2017... the
news began to hit newsrooms by 7.30pm or 8pm. The initial report coming in
sounded like this:

Goa: Around 50 people fall into river after footbridge collapses in South
Goa's Curchorem, rescue operations underway, more details awaited...
According to sources people had gathered near the river when one person was
attempting suicide. As people of area came to know about the suicide
attempt more people started gathering. However the bridge could not hold
and the bridge collapsed. Sources said that bridge is over decade old. The
rescue operation is underway. Several managed to swim out. The water level
was not very high. The incident took place around 6.30 in the evening.

With in a couple of hours, the narrative had changed: it was no longer
about a bridge that collapsed in Goa but about a Portuguese-era bridge that
had collapsed in Goa. Every report and every follow-up on the story began
with the words Portuguese-era bridge. The difference, to the uninitiated,
is so subtle that it goes unnoticed.

Mind games are at play because by the morning after the collapse, the idea
has been firmly but subtly planted in people's minds that the bridge was
from the Portuguese times - meaning - it was not built by India; it was
old; it is not the fault of the present administration and that it was
destined to fall.

The matter and blame has been beautifully deflected because ignored is the
fact that Goa ceased to be part of Portugal in 1960. 57 years the bridge
has been Indian, but when it collapsed it was the fault of its Portuguese
pedigree.

It is totally understandable, though certainly not justifiable, on the part
of the administration to try and get absolved of the mishap. The
administration, in this case in the form of Assistant Information Officer
Siddhesh Samant of the Goa government, said: "A person had attempted
suicide in the river. The local fire brigade reached the spot and rescue
operation was going on. Locals came in numbers to watch the rescue
operation... however they climbed the foot bridge which is Portuguese era
old. It had been declared dilapidated and not in use for several years. At
around 6.30 the foot bridge collapsed when the rescue operation was going
on and all the people fell in the river."

It is the journalist's job to sift through the material and report events
objectively. Most of the reports in print and almost all reports on TV
began with the line that a Portuguese-era bridge has collapsed. The real
news, in this instance, was that a bridge in Goa had collapsed killing one
and injuring several others.

The age and pedigree of the bridge comes as a secondary point to be taken
up after the main thrust of the news and towards the end of the report
questions needed to be asked as to why so unstable an old bridge, which, as
per the administration's own admission, was declared dilapidated, was still
left standing?

The real news, in this instance, was that a bridge in Goa had collapsed
killing one and injuring several others.Photo: AP

Many people, if many people do read this, would wonder why such a big deal
is being made out of such a small innocuous event? The event may certainly
be innocuous because with a population of a billion and a quarter, in a
country that records more than 22,500 deaths every day, one additional
death and one old collapsed bridge is hardly of any consequence, but like
in any murder investigation the emphasis has to be on intent.

The intent in this case is to mislead and to deflect, the intent is to
fudge understanding — to keep the public from trying to or wanting to look
beyond the obvious. The ploy on the part of the dispensation is working
because the journalists and the editors of news organisations have stopped
thinking.

Like any good data entry operator, the journalist is typing out whatever is
being fed by the administration. No questions are being asked as the

In this audio recording, Dr Celsa Pinto talks about how she entered the
strange field of Indo-Portuguese history (about which she had only a hazy
idea to start with), brushed up her Portuguese-language skills, and spent
the last three decades in the field. Productively and being able to write
quite a few useful books on the subject. Also in this recording: Dr
Nandkumar Kamat (on Panjim, an extract) and campaigner-councillor Patricia
Pinto. Celsa Pinto's talk starts at around 11:00 mins.

[Goanet-News] Goodbye ... JC!

2017-04-16 Thread Frederick FN Noronha * फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या * فريدريك نورونيا
The sudden and unexpected death of Dr Jose Colaco was reported via
cyberspace earlier on Saturday (Goa time) and confirmed today. JC, as he
liked to sign off his emails, was an alumni of the Goa Medical College from
the 1960s and a pediatrician in the Bahamas for a long time. He spent his
youth in Pune (then Poona).

More importantly to us, he was an active and enthusiastic participant in
very many discussions in cyberspace, has long been an active member of
Goanet. He was also closely associated with The Goan Forum network, and
also the Colaco.net website through which he networked with Goans across
the globe and also shared the writings of many. See this link to his family
roots and his cherished connections to the villages of Velim (Salcete) and
Carambolim (Tiswadi): http://www.colaco.net/1/colacos.htm

The unanticipated news of his death took many by surprise, as Sweden-based
Lianne Falk-Rodrigues (journalist and alumni of Carmel's College, Goa)
said: "Just heard the sad and shocking news that Dr Jose Colaco has passed
away." Lianne added that his funeral will be in the Bahamas. He leaves
behind his wife, three children and families, and eight grandchildren.

In Canada, Michael Pinto shared a short, terse message while the day dawned
in that part of the world: "Dr.Joe Colaco passed away today."

A message shared by JC's niece Carol, shared via cyberspace, said: "Rest
peacefully my dearest Unca Jose Colaco. You were like a Dad to me... will
miss you dearly. You are now in Heaven and will see you one day. You left
so sudden without even saying 'Goodbye My Girl'. Save some red wine for me
...Love You Always ..your 19th favourite niece (I am his favourite but he
loved saying that.)"

Valmiki Faleiro, author and active cyber discussant from Margao, said: "Just
learnt from Dr. Lynette Colaco Martins, via her FB page, that her father
(and our Goanet friend), Dr. Jose Colaco is no more Doutorbab passed
away peacefully while on holiday. The funeral will be held in Nassau, she
said."

Santosh Helekar, a Goan researcher in Texas added: "Josebab passed away in
his sleep last night He died while on vacation with his extended family
in the Dominican Republic. Feels terrible to have lost another friend whom
I never got a chance to meet in person. Very sad indeed! Funeral will be
held next weekend in the Bahamas."

Dr Colaco had discussions (even arguments) with some of us, held on fast to
what he believed, but was always a gentleman in his disagreements. He was
involved with Goanet perhaps from its earliest days since its founding in
1994.

One particular incident I remember was when I asked for "Santa Claus'
address" online, in those early times in cyberspace, when few websites were
available and we communicated mainly via email. JC asked me (off channel)
what it was for, and I mentioned that a friend's daughter wanted to write
to "Santa" for a particular CD popular among kids of her age. JC gave his
own address (or created a temporary one), and received the mail as Santa.
On his way back to Goa, he made use of a halt at London to pick up the
exact CD, claim it came from "Santa" and even apologise for being so late.
It was February. I couldn't believe anyone could take so much trouble
for a child he didn't even know.

>From all his discussions, it was obvious that Goa was always high up in his
thoughts. On behalf of Goanet, our sincere condolences to the entire
family, including Emma, Alan and Vanessa, Lavina and Noel, Lynette and all
the names missed out -- Frederick Noronha (on behalf of Goanet).

[Goanet-News] ‘Christha Purana’ and ‘Goenchem Savasarikikan’ released (Navhind)

2017-04-02 Thread Frederick FN Noronha * फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या * فريدريك نورونيا
NT BUZZ

Educationist and writer Suresh Amonkar’s two Konkani books--‘Christha
Purana’ and ‘Goenchem Savasarikikan’ -- were recently released by art and
culture secretary, Daulat Hawaldar along with Goa University
vice-chancellor Varun Sahni, Fr Francis de Britto of Shirlai (Vasai)
Church, writer and environmentalist, director of Art and Culture Department
Prasad Lolayekar and Kiran Budkule, former HoD of English department, Goa
University at Institute Menezes Braganza, Panaji.

Director of Art and Culture, Prasad Lolayekar in his welcome address stated
that these books are a perfect representation of merger of Marathi and
Konkani (Devnagri and Romi script) language. The book Christha Purana was
originally written by Fr Thomas Stephen S J around 400 years ago in Romi
Marathi and it has now been translated in Devnagri Konkani by Amonkar. This
is the seventh edition of Fr Stephen’s Christha Purana as the original was
written in 1616 in Rachol.

Amonkar in his address stated that he is paying homage to Fr Thomas Stephen
who was known as Apostle of Salcete. He added: “But now Goa has forgotten
him [Fr Thomas Stephen] and I don’t know why. He deserves a feast which we
need to celebrate every year.”

While speaking about the history related to Christha Purana he said it was
used for 70 years in churches of Bardez, Tiswadi and Salcete but then it
was withdrawn in 1684. Fr Stephen had learnt the Konkani/ Marathi from
Brahmins of Salcete in order to write the *Christha Purana* in Romi
Marathi. Amonkar informed that at that time Marathi was the written
language and Konkani the spoken language in Goa. The new converts had only
two prayers in Konkani. So, there was lot of vacuum. In the year 1907 the
fourth edition of the Purana was released in Mangalore. Amonkar described
Fr Stephen as the real author who understood the need of the time.

The second book ‘*Goenchem Savasarikikan*’ throws light on the
socio-religious conditions prevailing in Goa during the 16th and 17th
century. While speaking about it he said: “I have looked upon the encounter
between East and West as a process of globalisation. I would like people to
consider the encounter in the context of indirect influence of Renaissance,
Reformation and counter-Reformation, not just conversions.”

Budkule while analysing these books in her address stressed that Amonkar
has imported the mind and creativity of Fr Stephen while writing these
translations.

Hawaladar in his speech spoke at length about the role of translators and
the original writers. He said: “Fr Stephen in *Christha Purana* is telling
story of Christ in a receiving language and in a receiving culture. When we
remember great writers we also remember their translators. Amonkar is
translating from dominant language to vernacular language which takes
techniques from oral traditions. It is to communicate a thought. It is
adding value to his and our lives.”

Varun Sahni in his address stated that due to this book there is a
communication between various ‘*bhashas*’ or languages of the country,
which is very important in today’s times.

Fr Francis de Britto said that this book is an example of inter-religious
dialogue. He focused on the current climate of polarisation and hate and
that’s why we need to celebrate such literary works. He said that Amonkar
is a real Goenkar as he has done this job of translation. He said that
*Christha
Purana* was possible in Goa as this place is a cradle of many religions
like Hinduism, Islam and Christianity. He stated that basic human values
are nurtured here. He also emphasised on the role of mother-tongue and its
promotion.

These books were released on March 22, which also happened to be Amonkar’s
82nd birthday, which was celebrated with the dignitaries and his well
wishers.

[Goanet-News] MAR 31, 5 PM, ANJUNA: Celebrating Victor Rangel Ribeiro at a Poetry Reading

2017-03-28 Thread Frederick FN Noronha * फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या * فريدريك نورونيا
The GoaWriters will hold a Poetry Reading on Friday, 31st March. It
will be held at Palacete de Rodrigues, Anjuna and sponsored by the
Lions Club of Mapusa Suburban

Victor Rangel Ribeiro our nonagenarian friend and founder member
of Goa Writers will be our Guest of Honour.

Victor was born in Goa but has lived most of his adult life in the US.
He is well known for his novel Tivolem (1998) which was awarded the
Milkweed National Literature Prize. From 1964-73 he ran a music
antiquariat and became director of the New York Beethoven Society.

He conducts the Goa State String Orchestra in concert each time he
now visits Goa.

In 1983 he took an MA from Teachers College, Columbia University,
taught for a time in private and public schools, and then became
involved in co-coordinating adult literacy teaching. He loves to share
his knowledge with writers and gives workshops in Goa practically
every time he visits. Until 2011, he was on the International Online
Creative Writing Faculty of Fairleigh Dickinson University’s MFA
program in Madison, New Jersey.

Some twenty years ago he translated about twenty late nineteenth
century French poems into English, and the volume has been
published by Dover in New York. He has always had a passion for
Poetry and in his own words “At one time I carried hundreds of
poems around in my head and my heart”. Victor does not have a
passion for just poetry or music or literature or teaching. He has a
passion for life and we revel in his passion.

The Carnival of Poetry will be held at 31st March at 5 pm, and is
open to both regulars at the GoaWriters group and also guests.
All interested in coming and celebrating Victor and Poetry,
please contact Anita Pinto: anitapinto@gmail.com

Lancelot Ribeiro (born 1933, died 2010 London) was an Indian modern artist.
According to the Independent, he is considered to have been at "the
vanguard of the influx of Indian artists to Britain."[3]

Early life[edit source]

Lancelot Ribeiro was born in 1933 to in Bombay, India accountant Joao José
Fernando Flores Ribeiro and his mother Lilia. He was the half-brother of
artist F.N. Souza. Ribeiro moved to London in 1950, living with his brother
and studying accountancy. He abandoned this career when attending life
classes at St Martin's School of Art between 1951 and 1953. He served in
the RAF in Scotland, then returned to Bombay. After working with Life
Insurance Corporation, he began working professionally as a painter in
1958.[3]

Career[edit source]

Ribeiro's creative life spanned half a century, during which time he became
known for a "huge body"[3] of figurative and abstract work. Among his
artistic productions were portrait heads, still lifes, landscapes, and
pigment experiments dating back to the early 1960s which "lead to works of
peculiar brilliance and transparency."[3]

Ribeiro died in 2010 in London.[3] In November 2016, as part of the 2017
UK-India Year of Culture, the exhibition Ribeiro: A Celebration of Life,
Love and Passion was held in association with the British Museum and other
institutions.[4]

Reception[edit source]

The British mainstream media has said:

"Lancelot Ribeiro was one of the most original Indian painters who settled
in Britain after the Second World War. Although there has been a surge of
dealer and collector interest in artists from the subcontinent, Ribeiro
remains relatively unknown compared with contemporaries such as his
half-brother FN Souza, Avinash Chandra, Balraj Khanna and Anish Kapoor." --
The Independent (London)[3]

Nicholas Treadwell remembers Ribeiro at The British Museum during 'Asian
Art in London' week, November 2016

Role of acrylics[edit source]

In a longish obituary, The Times of London acknowledges Ribeiro's role as
an "[a]cclaimed Indian artist who pioneered the use of acrylics in the
1960s, producing a brilliancy of colour in his expressionistic works".[5]
The paper talks of Ribeiro's "increasing impatience" by the 1960s over the
time it took for oils to dry, as also its "lack of brilliance in its colour
potential." He took to the new synthetic plastic bases that commercial
paints were beginning to use, and soon got help from manufacturers like
ICI, Courtaulds and Geigy. The companies supplied him samples of their
latest paints in quantities that he was using three decades later,
according to the paper. Initially, the firms thought the PVA compounds
would not be needed in commercially viable quantities. But they quickly
recognised the potential demand and "so Ribeiro became the godfather of
generations of artists using acrylics as an alternative to oils."[5]

As F.N. Souza's half-brother[edit source]

It is suggested that Ribeiro had a work in completing some of Souza's art
works:

[Goanet-News] Finding Mapusa... in Kochi

2017-03-05 Thread Frederick FN Noronha * फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या * فريدريك نورونيا
My Mangalorean friend (and author) Alan Machado's family was quite
pleasantly surprised to encounter Mapusa market at the recent Kochi
Biennale [http://www.kochimuzirisbiennale.org/]. When I met them recently
in Bangalore (oops, Bengaluru), they told all what they had encountered
there, and willingly share photos of the same too.

As it happened, Alan and Zina had only months back visited the (real life)
Mapusa market with me. Sometimes, when in a good mood, I humour visiting
friends with a walking tour around some part of Goa which I'm familiar
with, and which simultaneously interests them. Mapusa Market is a
favourite, a place with many sights, smells, sweets, spices and special
bargains!

A+Z claimed they would have won many of the prizes hands down (daughter
Alpa was there with them too, but she didn't encounter Mapusa with us).
Unfortunately, by the time they reached, the offer on the quizzes was long
over. Sad.

Alan incidentally is an engineer-turned-history buff, who specialises on
the history of the Mangalorean Christians and authored *Sarasvati's
Children*, *Shades Within Shadows*, and *Slaves of the Sultans*. The middle
one is a novel, the other two are non-fiction works in history. In both he
touches on the little-known and much-misunderstood 'captivity' of the
Mangalorean Christians by Tipu Sultan.

Incidentally, while the rivalry now between these two Christian communities
(specially in migration destinations like Mumbai) might not give you a hint
of this, the Mangalorean Christians are actually very largely of Goan
origin. Alan has often told me: "Rico, you talk about the Goan diaspora so
often, but you tend to forget one of your earliest and largest diasporas."

Meaning, the Mangaloreans.

His Australia-educated daughter Alpa designed the cover of this book, which
has done well in the market despite very little direct publicity.

Alan's next work, again focussing on the intriguing and confusing world of
Indian history, is expected to be more ambitiousm, and take on a wider
canvas and a far bigger geography.

Just by way of interest, below are some of the photos Alan shared with me
on the Mapusa market (the exhibition at Kochi that is, not the place 6.3
kms away from my home). FN

2017-02-27 Thread Frederick FN Noronha * फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या * فريدريك نورونيا
Cabidela

>From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pato de cabidela in Macau

Cabidela or arroz de cabidela (cabidela rice) is a Portuguese dish made
with poultry or rabbit cooked in its own blood added to water and a bit of
vinegar. The blood is captured when the animal is slaughtered. The rice is
cooked together with the meat or separately. The blood imparts a brown
color to the dish.

Variants[edit source]

Variations on the dish is also popular in many of Portugal's former
colonies. In Macau, a similar dish made with duck (pato de cabidela or pato
à cabidela) is one of the most famous dishes in Macanese cuisine.[1]

In Brazil, this dish is made exclusively with chicken (thus being called
galinha à cabidela or galinha de cabidela), and is considered a typical
dish of the city of Recife. It's also very common and a typical dish in the
state of Minas Gerais where it receives the name galinha ao molho pardo. It
is also common to cook only the chicken's blood, with vinegar and
vegetables, until it becomes a sauce that can be added to rice or to the
cooked chicken itself.

In India, pork cabidela is popular among the Goan Catholic community of Goa.

The chicken version is one of the most common dishes served on special
occasions or in restaurants in Angola.[2]

[Goanet-News] WIKIPEDIA: Crab Curry (Goan)

2017-02-26 Thread Frederick FN Noronha * फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या * فريدريك نورونيا
Crab Curry (Goan)

>From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Caril de caranguejo or crab curry.

Crab curry (Caril de caranguejo in Portuguese) is a typical Indo-Portuguese
dish from Goa, Daman and Diu, a region along the west coast of today's
India which was part of the Portuguese State of India (Estado da Índia). It
is also a typical dish from Mozambique, due to the significant population
of Goan origin that exists in that country.

As the name implies, it is a curry dish prepared with crab, which
traditionally has been found in abundance off the coast of Goa.

In addition to the crab, its ingredients include onion, tomato, piripiri (a
cultivar of Capsicum chinense, one of the sources of chili pepper that
grows both wild and domesticated), garlic, coconuts and spices which form a
yellow curry.

The coconuts are grated, to extract its milk. The crab can be either cut
into pieces or shredded. In the first case, it is common to be consumed by
hand, to facilitate the extraction of meat. In both cases, the previously
cooked crab is placed in a pan to boil with most of the ingredients. After
some time the coconut milk is added, boiling the dish for about 30 minutes
to rinse it.

It is usually served with white rice, which can be complemented with pickle
and papads (paparis).

Music and love kept her strong in her darkest hour
Lakshmi Khanagar loves to sing. Her clear, lilting voice belies the
struggles this 27-year-old has already seen in her young life. Born into a
family that was facing financial challenges in a small village in Gokak
Taluk of Belgaum district, she has always had to fend for herself. As a
child, Lakshmi was forcefully sent away to Goa to work for an affluent
family, but she refused to spend the rest of her life as a stay-at-home
maid, and fought her way back home, against everybody’s wishes. She then
joined a hostel meant for backward classes in Gokak with the intent of
finishing schooling without being a burden on her family. These years
proved to be more arduous than she had thought

5 tourist hotspots that can provide home to startups
Goa is known as a tourist hotspot for fun, entertainment and beach-time.
However, the infrastructure and quality of life are very high in this state
on the west coast of India. With the large floating tourist population and
the generally laid-back atmosphere, Goa is a prime candidate for startups
involved in event management, music, adventure sports and the food and
beverage sectors looking to set up shop in a location that has the
advantages of industrialisation without the cons of overcrowding, bad
infrastructure and high pollution that are found in big cities.

When inmates of Goa jail signed up for Bachelors and Masters degrees
Breaking the prison cycle with higher education, the inmates of Colvale
jail, Goa, made productive use of their time by signing up for Bachelor of
Arts (BA) and Master of Arts (MA) courses. On the occasion of the Goa
Statehood Day on Monday, 21 of the 48 inmates who had enrolled in various
educational courses last year were felicitated by the prisons department.
The inmates completed their courses through a special study centre of
Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) at the prison.

How a team of young architects is giving back to their hometown with
‘Houses of Belgao’
Enter Cicada, a team of three 23- year-old classmates, friends and
ultimately partners – Mohit Yalgi, Suyash Khanolkar and Tanvi Dhond. Born
and raised in Belagavi, the three young architects decided early on that
they would never stray far from the place that two previous generations of
their family had always called home. The town has always been a collective
of their stories from the past and the ones that they themselves created.
The built environment – especially the homes have been narrators of these
stories and hence an integral part of the heritage for us.” they say.

Will hyperlocal services find success in tier 2 cities?

vegetables to the customers’ doorstep – has had the advantage of a cheaper
labour force too. Founder Rohan Kulkarni says: “We could move to metro
cities too, but there are many hyperlocal startups already. I first want to
move to other Tier II cities – namely Belgaum, Dharwad and Karwar – and
then Goa, where nothing is really cultivated.”

2017-02-06 Thread Frederick FN Noronha फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या *فريدريك نورونيا
Most Goan expats are thought to be Catholic. This is a story from the Hindu
Goan diaspora (to the US), and makes for an interesting read. The writer is
an engineer, whose words give insight into the Goa of the 1960s and
subsequent.

How Gaonkar got the chance to travel abroad, his fright over health issues,
struggling to make it in a new land, and his experience with a Marathi
(ex-Maharashtra) teacher turned freedom fighter all make for interesting
reading.

[Goanet-News] NEW BOOK: Govyeantil Nivadnuka -- Vidhansabha va Loksabha 1963-2014

2017-02-05 Thread Frederick FN Noronha * फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या * فريدريك نورونيا
Elections are like one big cricket match; except the latter doesn't require
spectators to be goaded into joining, as the radio and media in general
seek to do in these pre-poll days in Goa. Anyway, statistics form a
critical part about elections too, and this book is all about that.

This book is by a *Tarun Bharat/Gomantak/Dainik Herald* journo. It has
sections (in Marathi) covering Goa's first to 11th legislative assembly
elections, BJP's first formation of a government in Goa, political
instability, countermanding, presidential rule, in short an overview and
also a detailed look at electoral politics here.

Its next section deals with the Lok Sabha elections. in 16 different
sections. The second-last ends with the elections of 2014 (while the last
focuses on MPs elected/nominated to represent Goa since 1962).

>From page 119 to 250 is a section in English offering detailed results of
assembly elections. In my view, a useful book for the political scientist,
journalist or just about anyone interested in keeping track of how votes
are collated to make for winning alliances, split up and fractionalised to
ensure the defeat of some, and otherwise manipulated (sometimes innocently,
at other times in keeping with the negative connotations of this word).

Of course, needs reading in between the lines too.

Like the other two books, this one too is available from the Varsha Book
Stall, near Azad Maidan in Panjim. Reasonably priced, and a useful work of
documentation and (if you can read Marathi) analysis.

*A alforreca *
--

*O Heraldo, *11 de agosto 1965
Sou teu amigo e irmão
Desculpa-me, pois, se sou franco.
Sei que a franqueza
Não paga neste mundo.
Mas, que queres amigo?
Sou o que sou
A minha profissão
Não é de adulador!
Agora ouve:
A tua bondade – dizem –
É tradicional e histórica!
E não sei que mais!
Quem diz isto
Ganha a tua estima
E, às vezes, grossa fatia!
Mas eu digo o inverso.
Bondade tens
Mas bondade perigosa,
Para ti, e para a tua terra!
Bondade que treme
Perante os fortes e poderosos.
A bondade que não sabe
Ser firme e afirmar-se,
Em face de maiores intempéries,
Bondade que exerce
O papel dúbio e indigno
E não condena a maldade,
Que não se recolhe
Perante a verdade severa,
Bondade que é o traço
De todos os fracos.
Amigo, goês, se a tens
E dela te vanglorias,
És para mim
Como uma alforreca
Que é mole e bonita, sim,
Mas extremamente repelente!

*The Jellyfish *
--

*O Heraldo, *11 August 1965
I am your friend and brother
Forgive me, then, if I am frank.
I know that frankness
Doesn't pay in this world.
But what do you want, friend?
I am what I am.
I am not a flatterer
By profession!
Now listen:
Your kindness – they say –
Is traditional and historical
And I don't know what else!
Those who say this
Gain your respect
And, at times, something more
But I say the opposite.
There is kindness in you...
But a kindness dangerous
To you and your land!
Kindness that trembles
Before the strong and the powerful.
Kindness that does not know how
To be firm and assert itself
In the face of the greatest tempests,
Kindness that plays
A dubious and worthless role
And does not condemn evil,
That does not muster itself
Before the harsh truth,
Kindness that is the mark
Of all weaklings.
Friend, Goan, if you have this kindness
And pride yourself on it,
To me you are
Like a jellyfish
Which is soft and pretty, yes,
But extremely repellent!

2017-01-01 Thread Frederick FN Noronha * फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या * فريدريك نورونيا
This is an extract from a letter penned by the Goan expat writer Orlando da
Costa (1929-2006), in January 1996.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/fn-goa/32025989355/in/dateposted/
https://www.flickr.com/photos/fn-goa/31909185091/in/dateposted/

[Please click on the image for an enlarged and better view.]

In it, he mentions the literary influences on his work, and what led to his
writing of 'O Signo da Ira'. Costa's work is getting attention in Goa this
fortnight, when his son, the Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa, [
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ant%C3%B3nio_Costa] visits Goa on Jan 11-12,
2017.

[Goanet-News] FOCUS: Goan Literature in Portuguese (Melo e Castro/Festino, eds.)

Muse India: the literary ejournal Issue 70: Nov-Dec 2016

http://www.museindia.com/index.asp

FOCUS: Goan Literature in Portuguese

Cielo G Festino and Paul Melo e Castro, the Guest
Editors of this Special Feature on Goan Literature
  in Portuguese, have meticulously selected
translations of a literature that is not very well
known outside its particular frame of reference,
culling rich material from the ongoing FAPESP
thematic project "Pensando Goa." In the
  ‘plurilingual’ tradition of Indian literatures,
they have focussed on the translation of primary
  texts, with critical interventions, wherever
possible, with the hope that it opens up some of
the rich body of Goan literature in the Portuguese
language to a wider public and make it a part of
the continuing narrative of Indian literatures,
while linking it with Goan literature in other
languages like Konkani, Marathi and English

[Goanet-News] Cemetery spruce-up... at Saligao

2016-10-28 Thread Frederick FN Noronha * फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या * فريدريك نورونيا
Village volunteers in Saligao are planning to clean up the cemetery from
3.30 pm on Saturday (Oct 29, 2016), in preparation for the All Souls Day
early next week.

The group has been working to have the place painted, and have been
planting decorative plants in the area too. On All Souls Day (Nov 2),
family members and friends of the departed light up the graves at 6.30 am
onwards, and Mass is at 7 am in the cemetery.

For those who might have not read of it earlier, a lot of volunteer work
has gone into giving a facelift to the Saligao cemetery. The goal is to
simply make for a better final resting place in the village

2016-10-17 Thread Frederick FN Noronha * फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या * فريدريك نورونيا

Published on 16 Oct 2016

Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa form the bloc of emerging
economies, but is it still relevant?
For several years now, the most talked-about trend in the global economy
has been the rise of developing markets.
Some economists expected Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa to
lead the world to new economic heights. But as the BRICS bloc met for its
8th summit in India's state of Goa, those hopes appeared to be fading.
Most of the countries involved are struggling to deal with slowing
economies. They must find ways to forge closer business and trade ties. But
there are other concerns to be addressed too, national security and the
threat posed by terrorism.

Presenter: Laura Kyle
Guests:
Sreeram Chaulia, Dean of the Jindal School of International Affairs.
Aly-Khan Satchu, emerging markets economist
Anastasia Nesvetai-lova, director of City Political Economy Research Centre
at City University London.

[Goanet-News] Goan institutions in Kenya

2016-10-13 Thread Frederick FN Noronha * फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या * فريدريك نورونيا
Just curious to know -- are there any Goan institutions still
active/existing in Kenya? The only two one can find links to online are:

The Nairobi Institute, Kenya (on Juja Road)
P.O.Box 40197
Nairobi, Kenya

The Goan Gymkhana
P.O.Box 41910
Nairobi, Kenya.

Google has some link to the former [http://bit.ly/NairobiInst] but there
are no details or photos linking there.

The Kenya Buzz has some link to the Railway Goan Institute at Parklands [
https://www.kenyabuzz.com/biz-directory/goan-institute] but it's not clear
if that is a past description or present.

Are there any other Goan institutions or links in that part of the world? FN

PS: Please post your pointers to goa...@goanet.org -- twenty+ years of
crowdsourcing Goan information, knowledge and wisdom.
