Hopefully Google can find a way to let independent developers to continue
to use the API.

[Google Maps API v3] Can Google explain the logic behind the Maps API changes ?

2018-05-13 Thread Rob McMahon
I've seen the announcement but can Google put forward someone who
developers can talk with and discuss these changes. I can't understand the
logic behind this decision which will force many developers at very short
notice to cease using the Google Maps APIs.

Have alternative options been considered for semi-commercial developers
such as ad-supported use of the API ? This works fine with much higher
volumes on YouTube.

There was a time when the Maps API team would discuss all aspects of the
API in forums or by email, those days have gone.

I'm hoping that some people within Google will see the reaction and realise
the damage that this decision will cause to Google's reputation - see
http://geoawesomeness.com/developers-up-in-arms-over-google-maps-api-insane-price-hike/

. It's not too late for Google to change course. They should delay the
implementation period and consider alternative such as ad-supported access
to the API.

[Google Maps API v3] Re: Changes to your Google Maps APIs account

2018-05-13 Thread Rob McMahon
Hi Ralf
I haven't found any way to cap your usage other than to disable your
account before it reaches the limit which is not practical.

Leaflet seems to be the best option for me now, MapBox (which can used with
Leaflet) are also offering free Pay-as-you-go services for developers who
switch from Google.

[Google Maps API v3] Re: Changes to your Google Maps APIs account

2018-05-07 Thread Rob McMahon
Problems with the changes include :

1. There is no way to prevent payments being made if the usage cap is
reached. This could become very expensive if map pages get a spike in
traffic.
2. Very short notice was given by Google (only 5 weeks) which makes
changing to an alternative API very difficult.

While it's understandable that Google want to make commercial users pay for
usage there is no consideration given for users who fall between non-profit
or full commercial. Many have been using the API for years and have
contributed with bug reports and feature suggestions over this time. These
maps display on ad supported sites with relatively low income so getting
billed is not a viable option.

Google should reconsider these changes and offer a new ad supported system
for using the Maps API in the same way that YouTube does. Commercial users
would not want ads on their maps but other users would prefer that option
to getting billed.

I did try to post this on the original announcement page
at
https://mapsplatform.googleblog.com/2018/05/introducing-google-maps-platform.html

but comments there are blocked.

There are some prices at
https://developers.google.com/maps/pricing-and-plans/#details . The premium
plan prices are not listed, you have to contact sales to obtain these. When
I enquired a few years ago it was $10k per year but that may have changed.

It's aimed at people with an annual contract so they can compute usage

[Google Maps API v3] Re: Can Google offer an ad-supported alternative to the current usage levels for the Maps API ?

2016-11-27 Thread Rob McMahon
Thanks for the info Ralf, I wasn't aware of the credits plan so I'll check
that out. The 50 cents per thousand views option is too much for my site
since for a number of years it's been providing free mapping tools to users
to add maps to their sites without having to code anything.

It's reasonable to charge commercial users like Google do and they do have
a programme for non-profits. The main problem for me and other developers
happens when your site falls between these two categories of commercial and
non-profit. I guess this is why we see so many developers using Open Street
Map rather than Google.

Here's an example project I've done which illustrates the issue
http://www.mapchannels.com/VideoMaps.aspx which uses both YouTube and the
Maps API. I could display the YouTube component as much as I wanted but if
the daily views for the Maps got to 25k then I'd get billed for usage.
Having an ad-supported option like YouTube would be great if Google could
implement this

[Google Maps API v3] Can Google offer an ad-supported alternative to the current usage levels for the Maps API ?

2016-11-25 Thread Rob McMahon
Could an alternative to the current usage limits system be devised by
Google ? I can understand the need to charge large commercial users but the
licence costs for semi-commercial ad supported sites (like mine) mean that
Google Maps become unviable once usage levels hit this limit. With the
current system developers are deserting Google Maps for other platforms.

Recently I observed the limits being exceeded on one of my projects.
Effectively the map is killed off with an 'Oops something went wrong'
message at certain times of the day.

Compare this approach to Google services such as YouTube where its possible
to get millions of hits for videos that consume way more bandwidth than the
average maps does.

YouTube has ad support options and Google Maps used to have the Ad Unit
option until this feature was removed from the API.

If Google want to encourage developers to use the API then they really
should offer an option to display maps beyond the current usage limits,
provided that ad units similar to YouTube ads get displayed.

I would certainly prefer a popup ad on my maps instead of the current 'Oops
something went wrong' message. One important feature should be the ability
to hide ads after a certain time has elapsed (as YouTube does) - the old ad
units did not have this feature which made them annoying for a lot of users.

Offering an ad unit option with the ability to earn a bit of revenue from
the ads would do a lot to help the developer community. Large commercial
users would continue to pay for their premium licences so as not to have
ads displayed on the maps, therefore it would be a win win situation,
boosting usage for the Maps API and boosting ad revenues for Google and for
map developers.

[Google Maps API v3] A replacement in the Maps API for the Panoramio Widget API ?

2016-10-11 Thread Rob McMahon
Recently Google have announced that the Panoramio site is closing and that
the site functionality is now being merged into Google Maps. There is a
thread about it here
https://groups.google.com/forum/?utm_medium=email_source=footer#!topic/panoramio-questions-support/dw3UYp1lQdY%5B1-25%5D

I have a number of web pages that combine the Panoramio Widget Javascript
API with the Google Maps API to display user photos on a map.
http://www.panoramio.com/api/widget/api.html

I have checked the Maps API documentation and asked in the Panoramio Help
Forum but it appears there is not yet a replacement for the Widget API.

Can someone let me know if there is an alternative photos API available or
whether this functionality will be added into the Maps API soon ?

[Google Maps API v3] Panoramio and Weather libraries status ?

2015-06-08 Thread Rob McMahon
Can someone from Google give an update on the status of the Panoramio and
Weather libraries which were due to be phased out this weekend.
I read this recent post on
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/panoramio-questions-support/1jOMbwyWli4
which
indicates a welcome change of plans for Panoramio.

So today, after listening to community feedback about the future of the
platform, we’re pleased to let you know that there won’t be any immediate
changes to Panoramio. Instead of aligning the community with Views, we’ve
gone back to the drawing board to work on a more integrated solution that
supports you and your content directly within Google Maps.

The examples on these pages which use the libraries are still working at
the moment but there is a notice saying that they won't be available after
4th June 2015  :

https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/javascript/examples/layer-panoramio

https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/javascript/examples/layer-weather

I'm hoping that both these Google Maps libraries can still be made
available since I and a lot of other people find them useful.
If the libraries are retired can it be done in a way that won't break code
that use them ?

RE: [Google Maps API v3] Re: Issue with the new 'signed in' feature

2014-12-06 Thread Rob McMahon
Hi Enoch

Thanks for the reply. It’s probably best to look at the template map which is
used to generate the code for the user.

This is at http://www.mapchannels.com/venuemap/template/map.htm

The marker is set up in createMarker() at line 403 and the infoWindow is
displayed by showInfoWindow() at line 560.

I can strip down the code and send you a link tomorrow to a page with just the
one map and no street view.

I did try playing around with the creation order for the marker and info window
but the same problem happened.

It may be due to the fact that I’m not using Google Place IDs for the markers.
In lines 405 – 418 I have this code to set up the properties required for
markerOptions :

// place information (location and name) for used by the Google
signed-in bookmarking service

var placeInfo =

{

placeId: null,

location: pt,

query: placeName

};

// Add Marker Attribution Information

var attributionInfo =

{

source: linkTitle,

webUrl: linkURL

};

var markerOptions =

{

position: pt,

map: map,

icon: markerURL,

title: name,

place: placeInfo,

attribution: attributionInfo

};

I’m guessing that there’s a different process for markers without a Google
Place ID and that is causing the bug.

It’s not a major issue but it would look a bit neater without the text flicker
when the info window is launched. It only ever happens the first time the info
window gets displayed.

Best Regards

Rob McMahon

There is a small bug I noticed with the signed in feature. When the info window

This isn't a major bug but it would look neater if only the 'Save to Google

[Google Maps API v3] Questions about the new Google My Maps

2014-11-28 Thread Rob McMahon
I have some questions about the new Google My Maps. If this isn't the right
forum for My Maps I'd be grateful if someone could forward this post to
someone who deals with My Maps.

The new My Maps interface is generally good and contains some useful
improvements. The problems I have are with the transition from maps created
with the classic My Maps to the new My Maps and also with the export of KML
data.

1. Custom markers in the exported KML have been replaced with generic white
markers. Even the old My Map markers have been replaced. Can custom markers
be included again in the KML output ?

2. Polylines which were created from the classic My Maps have been placed
into a separate layer (together with 2 new markers and a duplicate
polyline). If there are more than 5 polylines in the original map then the
layer limit for the My Map is exceeded and the map can no longer be edited
(without upgrading to My Maps Pro).There is no option to revert to classic
My Maps so when this happens you are stuck with a map which cannot be
edited.

3. Can the new My Maps display a static KML or KMZ link ? This feature was
very useful in the old My Maps for people who wanted to display their My
Maps data in a v3 API based mashup.
You can get this link using:

 url = http://mapsengine.google.com/map/kml?mid=; + mid

which works for publicly shared My Maps. Could this link be displayed when
'export' is selected from the menu ?

Whether intentional or not, the new My Maps do seem to place a lot of
obstacles in the way of people who want to use My Maps as a data source for
a mashup.

For me the major issue is the custom marker URLs. Including custom marker
URLs in the exported KML would make My Maps a more useful product to a lot
of people.
