They already gave several months' notice, I'd be *extremely* surprised if
this had any impact on their decision. The outcry about Google Reader
shuttering was several orders of magnitude louder than this, and it closed
anyway (and the service isn't shutting, it's just migrating and having API
limitations applied).

Total agreement. They have announced changes will happen and yet they have 
not announced anything substantive. In our case we are looking at Flickr as 
their API supports tag based queries.

Similarly, I agree with you regarding google photos whose lack of API makes 
it totally useless for just about anything. It is nothing more than a 
backup service really. Even its editing is astonishingly poor having 
stepped back from the google+ editor.

The honest truth is that I would never build a service on Google because 
they deprecate without replacing!
