Moving on to 6.4.2 . (see my post earlier today re: GRASS 7)

Same problem - error at startup reported as:

GRASS 6.4.2svn (oh_s_3402):~  3D view mode: 
dlopen(/Applications/GRASS-6.4.app/Contents/MacOS/lib/libgrass_display.6.4.2svn.dylib,
