*“Sathyam Babu and Ayesha Meera Nyaya Porata Committee”* (Formed by Dalit, Muslim, Human Rights and other people’s organization to achieve justice for the both victims) Ayesha Meera, B. Pharmacy student was brutally raped and murdered on 27thDecember 2007 in a private Women’s Hostel at Ibrahimpatnam, Kothur2 Village and Mandal of Krishna District of Andhra Pradesh. There is no possibility of anybody going, jumping to that place of the scene of offence which was situated on the 2nd floor of the building in a common hall with partitions where other students are also staying. The way to the steps of the building are protected by an iron mesh and which usually is being kept in lock and keys and are under the custody of the warden of the Hostel, Smt. I. Padma and her husband who also resides on the ground floor of the said building. The delay in the process of investigation is created doubts in the minds of public that there is a political interference and pressure on the police to save the offenders in such a way the name of the late Koneru Ranga Rao Municipal Minister of A.P. came into picture as his grand son Koneru Satish Babu, Surpanch of Gudavalli village alleged to be prime accused in the above said case In fact, villagers of Ibrahimpatnam and the residents nearby and the persons who have visited the scene of offence including the Chairman AP State Minority commission Yousuf Qureshi and the Member of National Women Commission, Smt. Nirmala Venkatesh who visited the scene also expressed her doubt that without the connivance of the Warden and Insiders, the offense could not have happened. Further, Hon’ble Member of Women Commission, Smt. Nirmala Venkatesh also suggested for Norco Analysis test to the Warden and her husband and one Ch. Madhavarao, MPP who said to be present at the scene of offence before the arrival of the police. The public at large applauded the response shown by Nirmala Venkatesh and her analysis and opinion is very near and suits the circumstances of the case and also coincides with the public opinion of that area. Even after four months the police are still unable to trace the culprits, which have created several doubts in the minds of public as to the genuinity and sincerity, honesty and efficiency of the police and the State Government. In March 2008 the police have arrested Gurvinder Singh alias Laddu, from the coastal city of Visakhapatnam was brought to Vijayawada and produced before a court, He allegedly murdered another college student and a watchwoman of a ladies’ hostel. The parents of the Ayesha Meera and the local public , Muslim leaders, Women Organizations Alleged the Police is trying to divert the process by arresting Gurvinder Singh alias LADDU and to save the culprits The police failed to identify the guilty despite questioning over 50 people. Also, DNA and other tests were carried out on more than a dozen suspects including the owner of the private hostel. The case drew wide attention as various women and students’ organizations took to the streets demanding justice for Ayesha’s family. Ayesha’s parents alleged that the police were deliberately going slow as the accused had political connections After eight months of intrigue and drama the police left the Gurvinder Singh alias Laddu and cooked up another story and arrested 20-year-old dalit boy Pidathala Satyam Babu, a part-time construction worker from Nandigama sub-division of Krishna district, saying that he raped and murdered Ayesha Meera Police deliberately chosen Sathyam Babu as a soft target as there are no body to talk about him, as he belongs to a poor dalit family and having no father, from the arrest the police really trying to kill him to close the case and to protect the real culprits According to a physiotherapist who treated Sathyam Babu for several times in Vijayawada Sathyam Babu’s spinal card was damaged due to police torture and that leads to guillen barre syndrome and caused chronic sensor motor axonal neuropathy which means his legs paralyzed and unable to move for a small distance The police have created another story saying that in such a condition he was escaped from their custody it is a conspiracy to kill him The police of cooking up the story of Satyam Babu escaping' and again coming out with another story of arresting him The arrest story is nothing but a damage control exercise done by the police. Bowing to pressure from the media and various civil rights groups The police originally planned to kill Satyam Babu in an encounter. Since human rights and dalit rights organizations took the issue seriously and launched agitation across the State, the police were left with no option but to cook up another story stating that they caught him at Jaggayyapet How the police first arrested Gurvinder Singh alias Laddu and framed charges against Satyam Babu in this case?, the police are misleading every organization right from the beginning. *RIGHT TO FOOD CAMPAIGN* * * *8th September 2010* * * * * *STATEMENT ON THE PM's OBSERVATION ON THE SUPREME COURT,* * MADE IN EDITORS' CONFERENCE ON 6th SEPTEMBER, 2010* * * The Right to Food Campaign is shocked at the Prime Minister's statement made to the editors' conference on 6th September, 2010, stating that the Supreme Court must not interfere with policy. We are glad that the PM has finally spoken up on the food issue, as it has ended up further confirming that this Government is so completely anti-poor. We believe that when within a democracy, people use their rights which have been enshrined in the Indian Constitution - the right to life, right to freedom of speech and expression as well as right to approach courts -, the Head of the Indian Executive, does not want the fundamental right of the people to be realised, and worse, he interferes with their right to get justice!. We condemn his comments that are likely to have a cascading effect down the bureaucratic chain and may lead to questioning of judicial intervention. While we agree that ideally the role of the Courts in policy making should be limited but the citizens have a right to approach the Supreme Court in situations like the present scenario when the Executive has failed to ensure that the rights of people are protected. The Government has failed to ensure that - nobody ever goes to sleep hungry, - mothers don't have to teach their children how to live with hunger, - hunger and starvation never happens, - not a single grain is wasted due to poor management of the food economy, - malnutrition in tribal and dalit children is prevented and deaths of infants due to malnutrition never happens, - no woman suffers from anemia, - the old and the vulnerable, the destitutes are not left to die lonely deaths, - children are provided with midday meals in school and under six children in anganwadi centres of the ICDS, - Dalit children get a meal with dignity and that there is no discrimination in the appointment of Dalit and Tribal cooks in the mid day meal scheme. - food is available in the market at affordable prices It is indeed ironic that while the same Prime Minister treated the delay in preparations for the Commonwealth Games as an emergency, the response to the hunger situation in the country is yet to come. The PUCL, Rajasthan filed a case (Civil Writ Petition 196/200) in the Supreme Court in 2001 demanding accountability from the state for persisting hunger and starvation in the country. The initial order in this case clearly lays out the perspective with which the Supreme Court has been intervening on this matter by stating that, *The anxiety of the Court is to see that the poor and the destitute and the weaker sections do not suffer from hunger and starvation. The prevention of the same is one of the prime responsibilities of the Government - whether Central or the State. How this is to be ensured would be a matter of policy which is best left to the government. All that the Court has to be satisfied and which it may have to ensure is that the foodgrains which are overflowing in the storage receptacles, especially of FCI godown, and which are in abundance, should not be wasted by dumping into the sea or eaten by rats. Mere schemes without any implementation are of no use. What is important is that the food must reach the Hungry*. (Order dated 20th August 2001). The fact that this Case has been continuing for nine long years in spite of more than 50 operative orders by the Supreme Court and more than 10 reports filed by the Supreme Court Commissioners shows the failure of successive Governments in eradicating hunger and starvation from the country. The Prime Minister must realise that people are forced to approach the Courts when there is such abdication of responsibility by the elected Government and it is the democratic function of the Supreme Court to respond to such appeals for protection of rights provided in the Constitution. Had the government made its own policy on universalisation of ICDS, there would be no need for the order of December 2006 directing governments to set up anganwadi centres in all habitations and to reach out to all young children. Similarly, had the government made its own policy to prevent deaths of homeless persons during the severe winter, the Supreme Court would not have had to 'interfere' and direct states to provide shelters to homeless people (January 2010). Had the government dealt with the leakages in PDS, then there would be no reason for the Supreme Court to set up a Central Vigilance Committee to look into the functioning of PDS and suggest reforms (July 2006). Had the Government ensured that there was no corruption in the supply of food for children, the Supreme Court would not have to say that private contractors must be banned from supply for nutrition supplements (October 2004). The Battle for Oil waged by the US NATO Israel military alliance requires the demonization of the inhabitants of those countries which possess these vast reserves of oil and natural gas. The Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) directed against Al Qaeda launched in the wake of 9/11 is evolving towards a full-fledged war of religion, a holy crusade directed against the Muslim World. US military dogma and war propaganda under the Bush administration were predicated on combating Islamic fundamentalism rather than targeting Muslims. This is not a war between the West and Islam, but .. a war against terrorism. So-called Good Muslims are to be distinguished from Bad Muslims: The dust from the collapse of the twin towers had hardly settled on 11 September 2001 when the febrile search began for moderate Muslims, people who would provide answers, who would distance themselves from this outrage and condemn the violent acts of Muslim extremists, Islamic fundamentalists and Islamists. Two distinct categories of Muslims rapidly emerged: the good and the bad; the moderates, liberals and secularists versus the fundamentalists, the extremists and the Islamists. (Tariq Ramadan, Good Muslim, bad Muslim, New Statesman, February 12, 2010). In the wake of 9/11, the Muslim community in most Western countries was markedly on the defensive. The Good Muslim Bad Muslim divide was broadly accepted. The 9/11 terrorist attacks allegedly perpetrated by Muslims were not only condemned, Muslim communities also supported the US-NATO invasion and occupation of Afghanistan, as part of a legitimate campaign directed against Islamic fundamentalism. Washington's objective was to instill a sentiment of guilt within the Muslim community. The fact that the 9/11 attacks were not instigated by Muslims has rarely been acknowledged by the Muslim community. Al Qaeda's ongoing relationship to the CIA, its role as a US sponsored intelligence asset going back to to the Soviet-Afghan war is not mentioned. Since the early 1980s, Washington has covertly supported the most conservative and fundamentalist factions of Islam, largely with a view to weakening secular, nationalist and progressive movements in the Middle East and Central Asia. Known and documented, the fundamentalist Wahhabi and Salafi missions from Saudi Arabia, dispatched not only to Afghanistan but also to the Balkans and to the Muslim republics of the former Soviet republics were covertly supported by US intelligence. (Ibid) What is often referred to as Political Islam is in large part a creation of the US intelligence apparatus (with the support of Britain's MI6 and Israel's Mossad). *The Ground Zero Mosque* Recent developments suggest a breaking point, a transition from the war on terrorism to the outright demonization of Muslims. While underscoring the freedom of religion, the Obama administration is beating the drums of a broader war against Islam: “As a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country... This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable. There is no indication of where and when the video was recorded. Inspector General of Police, Kashmir zone, S M Sahai told The Indian Express that he had watched the clip and it looks like an “old video.” “We don’t know what is the origin of it (the video) but we will definitely inquire into it and check in what circumstances it was taken,” Sahai said. The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) questioned the video’s authenticity. “Such a thing is not possible in Kashmir,” said CRPF spokesman Prabhakar Tripathi. “The video seems manipulated to tarnish the image of the force and police.” Tripathi said it was hard to imagine how such an incident, if it had happened, could remain under wraps so long. “In this place, even rape doesn’t remain a secret,” he said. “This video can never be proved to be genuine.” Officials in New Delhi said they were checking the clip’s veracity. The video, uploaded on Facebook yesterday, shows four naked men being herded apparently by men in uniform at an unidentified location. There is a voice mocking the men. One voice asks the person recording the sequence to film the men from the front.
