[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1638695] Re: Python 2.7.12 performance regression
** Also affects: python2.7 (Ubuntu Xenial) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: python2.7 (Ubuntu Xenial) Status: New => Confirmed ** Changed in: python2.7 (Ubuntu Xenial) Importance: Undecided => High -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of नेपाली भाषा समायोजकहरुको समूह, which is subscribed to Xenial. Matching subscriptions: Ubuntu 16.04 Bugs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1638695 Title: Python 2.7.12 performance regression Status in python2.7 package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in python2.7 source package in Xenial: Confirmed Bug description: I work on the OpenStack-Ansible project and we've noticed that testing jobs on 16.04 take quite a bit longer to complete than on 14.04. They complete within an hour on 14.04 but they normally take 90 minutes or more on 16.04. We use the same version of Ansible with both versions of Ubuntu. After more digging, I tested python performance (using the 'performance' module) on 14.04 (2.7.6) and on 16.04 (2.7.12). There is a significant performance difference between each version of python. That is detailed in a spreadsheet[0]. I began using perf to dig into the differences when running the python performance module and when using Ansible playbooks. CPU migrations (as measured by perf) are doubled in Ubuntu 16.04 when running the same python workloads. I tried changing some of the kerne.sched sysctl configurables but they had very little effect on the results. I compiled python 2.7.12 from source on 14.04 and found the performance to be unchanged there. I'm not entirely sure where the problem might be now. We also have a bug open in OpenStack-Ansible[1] that provides additional detail. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide! It's an alternate for the regular Xenial driver that only manages NICs that are not supported by the regular Xenial driver. Since the backported driver lives in the special location kernel/ubuntu/bnxt it's not automatically included in the initramfs. But it's boot-critical so it needs to be added to the initramfs. [Test Case] Install the Xenial kernel on hardware that contains a newer Broadcom NIC and boots over that NIC. The machine will not come up because the NIC is not recognized. [Regression Risk] The driver is only loaded for newer Broadcom NICs. Older NICs are still managed by the regular Xenial driver, so there should be no regression. Matching subscriptions: Ubuntu 16.04 Bugs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1712455 Title: LXD 2.0.10 doesn't properly auto-update images Status in lxd package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in lxd source package in Trusty: New Status in lxd source package in Xenial: Fix Released Bug description: A number of issues interfere with LXD 2.0.10's ability to update images: - The auto_update flag doesn't properly get set on newly downloaded images - The cached flag doesn't get properly copied when an image gets refreshed The combination of those means that LXD effectively only updates images when a user requests a new container. This at least means that there is no security impact from this, but this also slows things down quite a bit and is certainly not the expected behavior. This fix cherry-picks two upstream fixes that resolve the two highlighted issues and applies an extra change which will automatically restore the auto_update flag for any image that is marked as "cached" in the store. == Rationale LXD regressed in its background update code, leading to most LXD hosts storing stale images and only refreshing them when a user asks for a new container to be created. This is pretty different from the expected behavior of LXD refreshing all its images every 6 hours. The fix restores the old behavior and attempts to reset the update flag on images which are supposed to auto-update. == Test case 1) Setup two LXD hosts on LXD 2.0.10 2) On the first LXD host, copy an image ("lxc image copy ubuntu:16.04 local: --alias blah") 3) Add teh first LXD host as a remote to the second LXD host 4) Create a container on the second LXD host using ("lxc init :blah c1") 5) On the first host, change the target of the alias ("lxc image copy ubuntu:14.04 local: --alias blah") 6) On the second host, look at the content of the image store ("lxc image list") 7) On the second host, restart LXD ("systemctl restart lxd") 8) On the second host, confirm that LXD is done starting ("tail -f /var/log/lxd/lxd.log") 9) On the second host, look at the content of the image store again ("lxc image list") On a properly functionaling LXD, at step 9) you'll see the new image in the image store with the old one gone. On a broken LXD, the initial image is there and there's no sign of the new one. == Regression potential The changes being pushed here are coming from existing LXD releases (2.16) so have seen significant use already. The main risk I can think of is in the DB patch that's included in this change. That code is very restrictive and will only set the auto-update flag on an image which is marked as cached (was automatically downloaded) and has a known source (as required for auto-update). This will not fix images which have been already updated by LXD through container launch as those will have lost their cached flag due to the other bug we're fixing here, but attempting to fix those would just be guesswork as any information on how the image ended up in the store is lost at that point. [Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1642298] Re: UEFI Xenial install sets computer to boot from hard disk

During MAAS installs, curtin is careful to disable that behavior. MAAS requires the default boot entry to remain PXE, so that it can direct the system to boot from disk or network as necessary. curtin does this by passing --no-nvram to grub-install when installing the bootloader. *Update*: newer curtin releases actually allow the creation of a new boot entry, but updates the boot menu to make PXE the default. That change is orthogonal to this bug. ***However***, this doesn't stop a new default boot entry from being added after deploy. If the user installs a grub package update or manually runs 'grub-install', booting from disk will become the default, and MAAS will lose control of the system. [Proposed Solution (er... glorified workaround)] The GRUB package in zesty now has support for setting the --no-nvram flag *persistently*. This is implemented via a debconf template (grub2/update_nvram). If curtin sets this flag to "false" during install, post-deploy grub updates will also pass the --no-nvram flag when running grub-install. This isn't a perfect solution - users can still call grub-install manually and omit this flag. [Test Case] - MAAS deploy an EFI system. - After deploy, login and run 'sudo apt --reinstall install grub-efi-$(dpkg --print-architecture) - Reboot and observe that the system does not PXE boot. [Regression Risk] - The GRUB implementation does not change the defaults of the package. The user would need to opt-in to the "grub2/update_nvram=false". This option is also only presented to users who specifically request a low debconf priority (e.g. expert mode installs). - XXX curtin risk XXX To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/curtin/+bug/1642298/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~group.of.nepali.translators Post to : group.of.nepali.translators@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~group.of.nepali.translators More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Matching subscriptions: Ubuntu 16.04 Bugs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1706284 Title: sssd fails to Update PTR if any A record update fails. Status in sssd package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in sssd source package in Xenial: In Progress Bug description: sssd in both xenial and yakkety fails to update the PTR record of the current host on an active directory controller if any update for an A/AAA record returns a non-fatal error, this results in missing (and/or) mismatched Reverse DNS. This has already been fixed in 1.5.1 (which is present in Zesty and above), as failure to update any of the A/AAA should not affect updating the PTR as well, as not all servers in a given AD cluster may accept an A/AAA record update, especially if it would result in no update being made (NOERROR). See the attached conversation about this issue here: https://pagure.io/SSSD/sssd/issue/3227 for further information. I'll attach a debdiff against the relevant releases shortly, however for now I've attached the original patch which was used to fix the bug in 1.15.1 ### SRU Justification ### [Impact] Currently users find that sssd will not update the reverse (PTR) records of a given host if an AD server returns non-fatal error for an A/AAA update. This causes strange issues to occur where we can end up with hosts with proper functioning forward records but no reverse. I propose we backport the fix from 1.15.1 to both Xenial and Yakkety to resolve the issue so PTR updates get processed (or at least attempted). The patch attached removes the error check that occurs should the return code of the A/AAA nsupdates be non zero, and instead allows the PTR update to occur before checking for errors. This is the same patch taken from the fix for 1.15.1 [Test Case] For the configuration of sssd, a basic configuration of the following should suffice: [sssd] services = nss, pam config_file_version = 2 domains = YOURDOMAIN.TLD [domain/YOURDOMAIN.TLD] id_provider=ad auth_provider=ad access_provider=ad chpass_provider=ad override_homedir=/home/%d/%u cache_credentials = true ad_gpo_access_control=permissive default_shell=/bin/bash ad_hostname = sssd-hostname.YOURDOMAIN.TLD In AD change the properties of the Forward zone Dynamic Updates to "Nonsecure and Secure" Ensure a Reverse Zone is present in the AD DNS MMC. Remove any existing A/ and PTR records from Active Directory DNS for the SSSD system Restart SSSD to trigger the nsupdate call Check the reverse zone in AD for PTR records, they do not get created but the A/ records do. Expected results: Both A and PTR records get updated. [Regression Potential] As this patch is already present in a future release it has been fairly well tested already however back-porting the fix will result in sssd attempting PTR updates whether the A/AAA updates succeeds or not. As per the original bug report where a quick note was made about failed updates; If forward updates fail the result will be inconsistent DNS should the reverse succeed (reverse but no forward), however in that case the admin needs to look into with why the update failed, the code should at least try to record all updates (both A, AAA and PTR) and not just ignore the PTR because the forward update (may or may not have) failed. There is also the possibility that the patch may not resolve the problem completely however as this patch just moves the error handling before the PTR attempt I can see no reason not to backport the patch to the older version for Xenial/Yakkety.
