Bug description:
  Feature Freeze justification (multiple):

  1) This is an entirely new, opt-in feature, currently not available to
users. They would need to enable said feature i order to use it.

  2) We intend to examine SRU of this feature to 16.04 (and thus would
also need to SRU to 17.10 if we wait until 18.04 to do it.) The change
  is coming either way :)

  3) We want to maximize the exposure/testing of HTTP/2 before 18.04
releases; having it in 17.10 will assist with that.

  4) From a practical perspective, this reduces our delta to Debian.

  ---

mod_http2 for HTTP/2 is not available in folder /etc/apache2/mods-available
  (/etc/apache2/mods-available/http2.load does not exist)

HTTP/2 (originally named HTTP/2.0) is the second major version of the
HTTP network protocol used by the World Wide Web.

In January 2016 it was decided not to put http/2 in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
because the code is too young and not compatible with a 5 years
  support: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-
  release/2016-January/003499.html

"Don't build experimental http2 module for LTS:"
  => https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/zesty/+source/apache2/+changelog

Ubuntu 17.04 has a support of 9 months and the http/2 code exists for
2 years. It is no longer necessary to disable http/2.

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1741564] [NEW] buggy TSC_DEADLINE not disabled for xenial/trusty kernels

2018-01-05 Thread Dan Streetman
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
An upstream commit added Intel cpu model/microcode checks to disable
TSC_DEADLINE due to cpu errata:

commit bd9240a18edfbfa72e957fc2ba831cf1f13ea073
Author: Peter Zijlstra
Date: Wed May 31 17:52:03 2017 +0200

x86/apic: Add TSC_DEADLINE quirk due to errata

That commit is included in the Ubuntu kernels starting at artful v4.13.

The Xenial 4.4 and Trusty 3.13 kernels do not yet have this commit, and so may
trigger the TSC_DEADLINE microcode bug.

Some details on the errata, under HSD173 (page 66):
https://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/specification-updates/4th-gen-core-family-desktop-specification-update.pdf

The kernel commit initially working around this microcode errata
contains a description of what happens when the bug is triggered, "TSC
deadline timer stops working or creates an interrupt storm..." (from
commit 855615eee9b1989cac8ec5eaae4562db081a239b which removes the
workaround after adding microcode level check).

[Test Case]

On a system with a CPU model and microcode containing the TSC errata,
check the /proc/cpuinfo contents; if the 'tsc_deadline_timer' feature is
listed, this bug exists. After patching, it should not be listed as a
CPU feature. The specific model/stepping/ucode numbers are listed in
the commits (bd9240a18edfbfa72e957fc2ba831cf1f13ea073 and
616dd5872e52493863b0202632703eebd51243dc).

[Regression Potential]

The major regression potentials I see for this are:

1) incorrectly disabling the TSC_DEADLINE timer, on a system where the
microcode errata doesn't apply, and
2) new reports of problems by T and X users who previously did not know their
CPU microcode was buggy and now see the "TSC_DEADLINE disabled" boot log error,
and report that as a "new bug".

[Other Info]

There are two follow-on fixes/refinements for this that should also be
backported to T and X kernels:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1724612
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1724912

Those commits update the specific microcode levels for specific cpu
model/steppings, and prevent disabling the timer on virtualized guests
(where the timer is also virtualized), respectively.

Additionally several related commits add, and then remove (once the
microcode-level-checks are in place) workarounds for this microcode
errata; commits 5bae156241e05d25171b18ee43e49f103c3f8097 and
8c9b9d87b855226a823b41a77a05f42324497603 (and possibly others) add the
workaround, then 855615eee9b1989cac8ec5eaae4562db081a239b removes it.
Those are fist included in 4.10, so neither the T nor X kernels include
the workaround.

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1727355] Re: Juju attempts to bootstrap bionic by default

2018-01-05 Thread Steve Langasek
Robie Basak and Andreas Hasenack have observed that the Breaks: from
distro-info-data are against the wrong package: juju-core is built from
juju-1 source and there is no newer version of this binary package in
xenial which is not affected by the Breaks:, resulting in distro-info-
data being held back.

distro-info-data needs a versioned breaks against the juju-2 binary
package instead.

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1623125] Re: fixrtc script does not catch "Last mount time: n/a" string

2018-01-05 Thread Brian Murray
Hello Oliver, or anyone else affected,

Accepted initramfs-tools into artful-proposed. The package will build
now and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/initramfs-
tools/0.125ubuntu12.1 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed
repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed.Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested and change the tag from
verification-needed-artful to verification-done-artful. If it does not
fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the
tag to verification-failed-artful. In either case, without details of
your testing we will not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance!

trying to boot a new dragonboard image results in:

error: assertion is signed with expired public key
  "-CvQKAwRQ5h3Ffn10FILJoEZUXOv6km9FwA80-Rcj-f-6jadQ89VRswHNiEB9Lxk" by
  canonical

this is due to a clock skew that should normally be catched by the
  fixrtc script in the initrd.

the script is supposed to check the last mount time of the writable
disk (SD card) and if this does not exist, fall back to the filesystem
  creation time ...

in former versions of mkfs.ext4 the last mount time filed was simply
left empty, so this fallback worked fine ... in xenial the fields now
  look like:

  Filesystem created: Tue Sep 13 17:32:20 2016
  Last mount time: n/a
Last write time: Tue Sep 13 17:32:20 2016

due to the script running with "set -e" it falls over on the "n/a" and
exists before falling back to creation time, there needs to be a check
added for the "n/a" string now.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * This bug effects anyone deploying LXD with juju on a machine with
interfaces configured as IP/mask. Since this is a very common use
  case, SRU is needed.

  [Test Case]

   * Detailed process can be seen at https://paste.ubuntu.com/26169937/

  [Regression Potential]

   * Potential for regression is low because of the nature of the error.
It's just missing a case stanza for interfaces that are defined with
  IP/mask

  [Other Info]

   * Original report:

I'm seeing this error as the status of multiple containers in my
  deploy:

  http://paste.ubuntu.com/26166720/

I can't connect to the parent machines anymore either - it seems
networking is totally hosed on the machines.

  This is with juju 2.3.1.
