  CVE-2017-12374
  1. ClamAV UAF (use-after-free) Vulnerabilities

The ClamAV AntiVirus software versions 0.99.2 and prior contain a
vulnerability that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to
cause a denial of service (DoS) condition on an affected device.

The vulnerability is due to a lack of input validation checking
mechanisms during certain mail parsing operations. If successfully
exploited, the ClamAV software could allow a variable pointing to the
mail body which could cause a used after being free (use-after-free)
instance which may lead to a disruption of services on an affected
device to include a denial of service condition.

  CVE-2017-12375
  2. ClamAV Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

The ClamAV AntiVirus software versions 0.99.2 and prior contain a
vulnerability that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to
cause a denial of service (DoS) condition on an affected device.

The vulnerability is due to a lack of input validation checking
mechanisms during certain mail parsing functions. An unauthenticated,
remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a crafted
email to the affected device. This action could cause a buffer
overflow condition when ClamAV scans the malicious email, allowing the
attacker to potentially cause a DoS condition on an affected device.

  CVE-2017-12376
  3. ClamAV Buffer Overflow in handle_pdfname Vulnerability

ClamAV AntiVirus software versions 0.99.2 and prior contain a
vulnerability that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to
cause a denial of service (DoS) condition or potentially execute
arbitrary code on an affected device.

The vulnerability is due to improper input validation checking
mechanisms when handling Portable Document Format (.pdf) files sent to
an affected device. An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit
this vulnerability by sending a crafted .pdf file to an affected
device. This action could cause a buffer overflow when ClamAV scans
the malicious file, allowing the attacker to cause a DoS condition or
  potentially execute arbitrary code.

  4. ClamAV Mew Packet Heap Overflow Vulnerability

ClamAV AntiVirus software versions 0.99.2 and prior contain a
vulnerability that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to
cause a denial of service (DoS) condition or potentially execute
arbitrary code on an affected device.

The vulnerability is due to improper input validation checking
mechanisms in mew packet files sent to an affected device. A
successful exploit could cause a heap overflow condition when ClamAV
scans the malicious file, allowing the attacker to cause a DoS
condition or potentially execute arbitrary code on the affected
  device.

  5. ClamAV Buffer Over Read Vulnerability

ClamAV AntiVirus software versions 0.99.2 and prior contain a
vulnerability that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to
cause a denial of service (DoS) condition on an affected device.

The vulnerability is due to improper input validation checking
mechanisms of .tar (Tape Archive) files sent to an affected device. A
successful exploit could cause a buffer over-read condition when
ClamAV scans the malicious .tar file, potentially allowing the
attacker to cause a DoS condition on the affected device.

With the default mysql-server installation on systemd versions of
Ubuntu (xenial and above) setting max_connections to more than 214
will not work, due to systemd imposed limits:

  2017-10-05T12:41:19.198342Z 0 [Warning] Changed limits: max_open_files: 1024
(requested 27500)

As can be seen, mysql tries to increase the open files limit to 27500, but
due to systemd imposed limitation it fails to do so, and then it selects
maximum possible number of connections, based on open files limit.

This was the problem with default setups with pre-systemd installs, but
upstart allowed mysqld to change the limit of open files before mysqld drops
privileges from root to mysql system user.
Even before that, on sysV init, there was a wrapper, mysqld_safe, which run
as root, used ulimit to change the open files limit and then started mysqld as
mysql user.

Would it make sense to ship mysql-server packages with mysql.service unit
files so that there is no limit for open files, or so that open files limit is
substantially higher than 1024?

This was all discussed when Ubuntu 15.10 came out, for mysql-5.6, in
bug LP: #1434758, but I am still bringing this up for more recent
  mysql versions.

  [Impact]

Sometimes (but not always) after locking the screen there is the
situation not having any input field where I can type the password to
unlock the session again. The shaded gray area simply does not have
the input field. I can't do anything, I have to switch to text console
and stop/start lightdm service to cure the problem l

When lock is enabled, the screen doesn't get blank/covered by
lockscreen before suspending, thus on early resume the content might
  be shown.

  Video showing the bug: https://youtu.be/dDOgtK1MldI

Reproduced on Ubuntu 2015.10, Ubuntu 2014.04

  [Test case]

  1. Work on highly secret files
  2. Close the lid of your laptop and go have a break
  3. Anyone who opens the lid of the laptop can see the secret files for a half
second before the lock screen appears

  [Possible Regression]

Content on screen isn't painted anymore and screen stays black.

It's impossible to exit from screensaver if a menu or an application

Bug description:
  [Impact]
The user cannot exit from screensaver if a menu or an applications grabs the
screen. Fixing this bug will make the lockscreen experience more reliable.

  [Test Case]
  1) Call something like
  sleep 3 && gdbus call --session --dest com.canonical.Unity --object-path \
  /com/canonical/Unity/Session --method
com.canonical.Unity.Session.ActivateScreenSaver
  2) Open a menu within 3 seconds

The unity screen is turned off, but moving the mouse or hitting the
keyboard won't hide the unity blank window.

The same issue happens if the lockscreen is configured to start after
X seconds after the screen has been turned off.

  [Regression potential]
Make sure screensaver works with and without grabbing.

I switched away from the fullscreen crusaders king II game (to
  different workspace).

When I tried to return back to the workspace where I left the game it
  was minimized.

Switching to the minimized game resulted to a resolution switch to
1024x768 even tough game was originally 1600x900. (The game selected
1024x768 automatically when launched frist time)

During the switching compiz decided to crash.

I had enabled extra indicators in use were time/calendar, sound,
battery, messaging, keyboard layout, network (mobile broadband in
  use), banshee and steam.

  [Test case]

  1. Use indicators or menus, switching applications

  4. Use left/arrow keys (repeatedly) to navigate through menus now

  Expected:
  5. The menu navigation should properly work across the whole menubar

  Actual:
  5. Menu navigation stops and resets to the menu item where the mouse was

  [Regression Potential]
Please make sure mouse navigation with LIM works properly.

  [Test Case]
Exactly like bug #552920 but for Lockscreen and Integrated menus:

  1. Click on the volume control to open the sound menu.
  2. Move the pointer diagonally to click on the maximum volume button.

What often happens: The sound menu closes, and the menu next to it opens.

What should happen: The sound menu stays open.

Force quit dialog is misplaced on hidpi monitors when scaling is different
than 1.0

  [Test case]
  1. Change the scaling of the UI to 2.0 using the System Settings
  2. Launch an application (e.g. gedit)
  3. In a terminal launch: killall -STOP gedit
  4. Interact with gedit window and try to close it
  5. Wait for the force quit dialog to show up
  6. Make sure it's correctly positioned in the center of gedit window

  [Regression potential]
None, because in case scaling is 1.0 nothing changes and with scaling != 1.0
it was already broken.

Title:
unity picks poor hidpi scale factor defaults

Status in unity package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in unity source package in Xenial:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [Impact]
The recently set-hidpi-scale-factor branch provides extremely valuable
support for hidpi displays, but it does introduce a few easily fixed
regressions because of the way it anchors scaling too rigidly to simulate 140
DPI.

This works well on a 15" Full HD or 4K screen, but sets a non-integer
scale factor on 14" and 17" Full HD or 4K screens. Most toolkits
don't support non-integer scaling factors very well, and even if they
did, it would still result in a loss of sharpness.

The displays mentioned above are perfectly usable at the nearest
integer scaling factor, and windows render much more cleanly when set
to 1x or 2x than 1.125x or 1.875x. The +-1/8 scale difference in size
compared to 1x or 2x isn't worth breaking pixel perfect widget
rendering. It would be a good idea to try to default to integer
scaling factors whenever reasonable. Otherwise most people will have
mangled widgets unless they spend the time to set the scale factor
  themselves.

Bug description:
  Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS using Unity
  unity-greeter 16.04.2-0ubuntu1

  [Impact]
On a HiDPI monitor on a Dell XPS 13 9343 laptop, if you uncheck
com.canonical.unity-greeter -> draw-user-backgrounds and then lock the desktop:

Expected: the purple placeholder wallpaper should cover the entire desktop
Observed: the purple placeholder wallpaper only covers the top-left part of
the desktop

I'm attaching an image showing roughly what the desktop looks like
when it's locked. The green rectangle is the part covered by the
purple wallpaper, the red is stuff that should not be visible when
locked, and the yellow is the usual name/password entry box that is
  partially transparent.

I'm marking this bug as a security vulnerability because it allows
someone to see part of a user's desktop even when the desktop is
  locked.

  [Test Case]
  1. Make sure to use an HiDPI monitor
  2. Open terminal
  3. gsettings set com.canonical.unity-greeter draw-user-backgrounds false
  4.

   * Xenial with HWE kernel (matching new relesaes) and qemu without cloud
archive (not matching new releases) could trigger hypercalls that are
 not supported in xenials-qemu.

   * There is no "real" case other than kvm tests yet to trigger it yet, but
it is an easy and well contained fix, so we might fix proactively.

  [Test Case]

1. deploy xenial + HWE kernel on a ppc64el box
2. sudo apt-get install qemu-kvm -y
3. git clone --depth=1
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/virt/kvm/kvm-unit-tests.git
4. cd kvm-unit-tests
5. ./configure --endian=little; make
6. sudo ppc64_cpu --smt=off
7. sudo ./run_tests -v

  [Regression Potential]

   * The changes are all upstream since a long time now (lowering the risk
 of silly mistakes)
   * The changes are isolated to ppc, so in the worst case only this arch
 should regress.
   * We implement new hcalls, so if anything there might be a regression if
software expected them to fail, but now breaks by them working (don't
think so given the nature of these hcalls).

  [Test Case]

  1. deploy VM with NFS storage ( running )
  2. block NFS via iptables

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1733700] Re: python tools do not understand 'non-magic' include rules

2018-02-15 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Due to the builder being down for meltdown/spectre, the patches for this
were delayed. However, the 3rd core snap without the issue (2.29.4.2,
2.30 and the upcoming 2.31.1) that caused this problem is about to be
released meaning the affected core snap revision is about to be reaped
which will resolve this bug for those users. As a result, marking all
stable releases of Ubuntu as Won't Fix. Bionic will be fixed with the
upcoming 2.12 merge from Debian.

GtkFileChooser dialog

  Actual results:
  * user is unable to find network folder and save/open file to/from it with
GtkFileChooser dialog and many user applications are affected

  -
  Original bug description is below:

GTK+3 doesn't show FUSE network shares in file chooser - it used to do
so in GTK+2, and the GTK+3 documentation still mentions it should do
  it.

In the mean time, every user of every application switching to GTK+3
-- including Chromium, at some point between 58 and 60 -- (a change
which happened in 16.04 LTS!!), loses the functionality to open or
save directly to a network share.

I had chosen 16.04 LTS for deploying our workstations at work, and my 50
users have been suddenly unable to do a simple operation they have to do dozens
of times a day.
They now have to "buffer" these files to their local filesystem when saving
them and before uploading them, and then copy them to the company's network
shares.
They were already a little bit grumpy when it stopped working with Firefox,
and are now really side-eyeing me when they apply updates and find Chromium
broken.

I have reported the bug upstream and provided a patch to fix this. I
hope you'll be able and willing to include it to Ubuntu's GTK+3
  package.

  Thanks in advance.

  Colin

Bug description:
Upgrade fails if datadir is a symlink and the server has previously
been upgraded with datadir as a symlink

  [Impact]
When upgrading, postinst makes a copy (with -d) of the datadir link to ensure
it's preserved. This copy operation can fail in some situations if the
destination already exists (because the package was previously upgraded with a
similar situation), causing d/preinst to fail every time the user tries to
upgrade the package unless they manually remove the old link every time.

The fix adds a -T to the copy operation, treating the destination as a
  regular file to be overwritten

  [Test case]
  * Create a /var/lib/mysql that is a symlink to some other location
  * Install an older version of mysql-server
  * Upgrade to a newer version of mysql-server

  [Regression potential]
This change has been in Yakkety for some time (5.7.15-0ubuntu2).

The change only affects user with datadirs that are symlinks, and only
a file copy operation for a file that's generally not used (it's
  backed up just in case)

  [Original Description]
Not sure if it's relevant, by my mariadb data dir is on a secondary hard
drive. /var/lib/mysql-upgrade/DATADIR.link points to the right path.

This is the terminal output for apt-get dist-upgrade:

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * The default tools.conf template shipped with the Ubuntu package is
useless - it gets cleared on the first run as it contains an
  unrecognized content.

  [Test Case]

   * Install open-vm-tools.
   * Check contents of /etc/vmware-tools/tools.conf.
   * Start vmtoolsd service e.g. by systemctl start open-vm-tools.
   * Check tools.conf contents again.

  Expected result:
Config is read an left untouched.

  Actual result:
  Config file is cleared.

  [Regression Potential]

   * If any of the parameters in the template is set to a non-default value
the behaviour of vmtoolsd may change slightly (e.g. different log verbosity,
log target - file vs. syslog).
But people will get the usual conffile changed prompts, so those who
modified it will have to consciously decide which makes it safe.

The tools.conf template shipped with Ubuntu (debian/local/tools.conf)
  is incorrect.

  It's current contents:
  bindir = "/usr/bin"
do not mean anything to open-vm-tools - it's not interpreted in any way by
vmtoolsd.

Moreover, on the first launch this content is cleared by a piece of
  code doing a "config upgrade".

I believe replacing it with a more meaningful content is necessary.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

I have a HiDPI screen. For all other GTK3 applications (and, to some
extent, GTK2) to deal with it, I have to set two variables:

  GDK_SCALE=3
  GDK_DPI_SCALE=0.3

The font rendering DPI is set to 240.

Unfortunately, this breaks decorations drawn by gtk-window-decorator,
as illustrated on the screenshot. I can work around this by creating a
wrapper that sets these variables to 1, only for this broken
  decorator.

  [Test case]

  1) In mate or pure compiz session run:
 env GDK_SCALE=3 GDK_DPI_SCALE=0.3 gtk-window-decoration --replace
  2) Check the decorations appearance
  3) They should look properly scaled without glitches

  [Regression potential]
The scaling is wrong or the decorations aren't properly painted

Bug description:

Trying to remove and/or re-add window decorations using xprop does not
work. Compiz expects that _MOTIF_WM_HINTS property type is
_MOTIF_WM_HINTS while xprop use CARDINAL type.

  [Test Case]

  xprop -f _MOTIF_WM_HINTS 32c -set _MOTIF_WM_HINTS "0x2, 0x0, 0x0, 0x0,
  0x0"

Use this command from terminal and then select window from which to
remove decorations. Decorations should disappear from selected window.

To re-add decorations use this command:
  xprop -f _MOTIF_WM_HINTS 32c -set _MOTIF_WM_HINTS "0x2, 0x0, 0x1, 0x0, 0x0"

  [Regression Potential]

Metacity and Mutter also use AnyPropertyType when reading
_MOTIF_WM_HINTS property so I guess there should be no regressions.

file-chooser dialog.
  2. Mount network location through fstab or file-manager ("smb://" = SMB/CIFS,
"sftp://"; = SFTP/SSH and so on)
  3. Try to save/open file to/from the remote location from Gtk3 application.

  Expected results:
  * user is able to find network folder and save/open file to/from it with
GtkFileChooser dialog

  [Impact]

   * bridge_role property setting is racy on boot

   * This results in incorrect bridge mode set on the devices,
sometimes, which leads to lack of desired connectivity (e.g. bridging
  internet to containers)

   * The fix for this issue is to set bridge_role, only after the device
  is online

   * Unfortunately the udev rules are not regenerated, therefore
affected systemd must manually remove and recreate chzdev rules

  [Test Case]

   * Remove qeth udev rules from /etc/udev/rules.d/
   * Enable qeth device using chzdev with a non-default bridge_role setting,
e.g.:
 chzdev --no-root-update -pVe c003 bridge_role=primary;
   * Reboot and check that bridge_role setting is correctly set in the sysfs,
e.g.:
 /sys/devices/qeth/0.0.c003/bridge_role

  [Regression Potential]

   * Minimal, the generated udev rules remain the same; the only
difference in the generated udev rules is the ordering in setting the
  bridge_role attribute

  [Other Info]

   * Original bug report:

Attempting to set bridge_role = primary with the following command in
  preseed:

  in-target chzdev --no-root-update -pVe c003 bridge_role=primary;

...works, and generates the following udev rule for this device:

  https://pastebin.canonical.com/164271/

  However, after reboot:

  systemd-udevd[2634]: error opening
  ATTR{/sys/devices/qeth/0.0.c003/bridge_role} for writing: Permission
  denied

  More logging:

  https://pastebin.canonical.com/164272/

after the system has booted, we are able to write to the file and set
  bridge_role to primary:

  root@10-13-3-10:/var/log# cat /sys/devices/qeth/0.0.c003/bridge_role
  none
  root@10-13-3-10:/var/log# echo primary >
/sys/devices/qeth/0.0.c003/bridge_role
  root@10-13-3-10:/var/log# cat /sys/devices/qeth/0.0.c003/bridge_role
  primary

  Operations involved :
  nova migrate
  nova evacuate
  nova live-migration

The above mentioned operations on instances lead to creation of a new
instance on a new compute host. It has been observed that the 'owner'
information in the libvirt.xml file is populated with the
username/projectname(tenantname) of the user performing any of the
  above operations.

  For instance,

  There's an instance 'ins-1' in project/tenant 'pro-1' owned by user 'user01'
launched on compute host 'compute-101'.
Now, an admin user named 'osadmin' from project 'admin', performs operation
  `nova live-migration asdfghi123xyz compute-102`
  * AD-123 (ID if ins-1)

This leads to a live migration of ins-1 from compute-101 to compute-102.
  Now, the file /var/lib/nova/instances/asdfghi123xyz/libvirt.xml in
compute-102 will have

  osadmin
  admin

  which ideally should be,

  user01
  pro-1

This inconsistency is seen in all the operations mentioned, i.e. evacuate,
migrate, live-
  migration.

  Related commands :
  nova live-migration SERVER HOST_NAME
  nova evacuate EVACUATED_SERVER_NAME HOST_B
  nova migrate VM_ID

  [Regression Potential]

   * This is pure bug-fix backport from version 44 (in yakkety and on)
to xenial. The regression potential is very low; most likely people
were seeing the issue as reported in this bug and manually, e.g.,
disabling modules again on every upgrade. This will actually avoid
  having to do that.

  ---

In the course of diagnosing an issue with a PHP module (xdebug in this
case) kept re-enabling itself during upgrades of libapache2-mod-
  php7.0, I found the following:

  1. libapache2-mod-php7.0 postscript sources /usr/lib/php/php-
maintscript-helper from php-common to re-enable modules that have not
  been administratively disabled.

  2. php-maintscript-helper calls phpenmod based on the output and
  return codes of phpquery

  3. phpquery calls its own action() function, which initializes the
  $ret variable to 0

  4. phpquery action() calls into various other functions in the script,
and sets the $ret variable based on their returns

  5. phpquery action() returns 0

  6. php-maintscript-helper correspondingly calls phpenmod on all
available php modules for the apache2 SAPI

  Source link for xenial: https://git.launchpad.net/~usd-import-
  team/ubuntu/+source/php-defaults/tree/phpquery?h=ubuntu/xenial#n162

the following addition to action() after the esac is necessary to
bubble up the internal functions' returns:

  return $ret

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1582585] Re: the speed of query user from ldap server is very slow

2018-02-15 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package keystone - 2:9.3.0-0ubuntu3.2

---
keystone (2:9.3.0-0ubuntu3.2) xenial; urgency=medium

  * LDAP backend performance improvements (LP: #1582585)
- d/p/prevent-error-when-duplicate-mapping-is-created.patch:
Handle races for creating id mappings.
- d/p/added-cache-for-id-mapping-manager.patch: Add a cache to
the id mapping manager to improve performance.
- d/p/add-mapping_populate-command.patch: Add a keystone-manage
command to populate id mappings between backend identity
  provider and keystone database.
- d/p/faster-id-mapping-lookup.patch: Allow querying for all
public ids in a domain at once instead of N queries (one per
  entity).
- d/p/fallback-for-custom-id-map-drivers.patch: Add fallback
path for faster-id-mapping lookup for any customer id mapping
drivers that may be in use or existing deployments.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * When using an LDAP backend for Keystone, the performance can be slow if
there are
a large number of users using the cloud. This is due in large part to
querying the
SQL database for the identity mapping information of each user in a
separate transaction.
For example, an environment with 12,000 users will result in 12,000 sql
queries to the
backend database in order to fulfill a user list request. This causes some
admin
functions in Horizon UI to take several minutes, which often exceeds the
WSGI and any
 haproxy timeouts configured.

   * This is fixed by backporting a series of patches which caches previously
fetched identity
mapping information in a memcached instance and changes the logic to query
all of the
user id mapping by the domain the id mapping is in. Additionally, the
keystone-manage
command to sync the id mapping information with a backend database in an
offline manner
is included to allow offline syncing of the data.

  [Test Case]

   * Install keystone using an ldap backend w/ large number of users.
   * List user information: openstack user list --domain
   * observe slow down

  [Regression Potential]

   * For Mitaka, the caching backends such as memcached or mongodb will likely
see more
usage and an increased footprint due to additional data being cached.
Caching the
identity mapping information is now standard since Newton and no major
issues have
 been seen coming from this.

   * This code affects the identity mapping between keystone user and the ldap
user
(essentially the bridge between the two). While it does not functionally
alter the
information that is mapped (e.g. no difference in how the identity mapping
is calculated),
it does alter a key code path for information regarding user identity
mappings.

  [Other Info]

   * These patches have been run and tested in a staging environment to
production and
have had exposure in the Mitaka path for approximately one month to show
their stability.

  [Original Description]

In our project, the speed of query user from ldap server is very
slow, our ldap user number is 12,000,the query costs almost 45 seconds

The reason is that keystone will generate the uuid for the ldap users one by
one and insert db.And second query time later,it also goes to db,not use the
cache.
So adding the cache to improve the query speed

After adding @MEMOIZE to the following function

https://github.com/openstack/keystone/blob/master/keystone/identity/core.py#L580.
First query time almost costs 50 seconds, but second query time later it only
costs 7 seconds.

So it is very necessary to improve this feature
