Title:
  Python 2.7.12 performance regression

Status in python2.7 package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in python2.7 source package in Xenial:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I work on the OpenStack-Ansible project and we've noticed that testing
jobs on 16.04 take quite a bit longer to complete than on 14.04. They
complete within an hour on 14.04 but they normally take 90 minutes or
more on 16.04. We use the same version of Ansible with both versions
  of Ubuntu.

After more digging, I tested python performance (using the
'performance' module) on 14.04 (2.7.6) and on 16.04 (2.7.12). There
is a significant performance difference between each version of
python. That is detailed in a spreadsheet[0].

I began using perf to dig into the differences when running the python
performance module and when using Ansible playbooks. CPU migrations
(as measured by perf) are doubled in Ubuntu 16.04 when running the
  same python workloads.

I tried changing some of the kerne.sched sysctl configurables but they
had very little effect on the results.

I compiled python 2.7.12 from source on 14.04 and found the
performance to be unchanged there. I'm not entirely sure where the
  problem might be now.

We also have a bug open in OpenStack-Ansible[1] that provides
additional detail. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1713536] Re: udev: boot script does not trigger subsystem coldplug

2017-09-14 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package systemd - 234-2ubuntu10

---
systemd (234-2ubuntu10) artful; urgency=medium

  * Do not fail debootstrap if /etc/resolv.conf is immutable. (LP: #1713212)
  * Revert "Create /etc/resolv.conf on resolved start, if it is an empty file."
As it is ineffective, and correct creation of /etc/resolv.conf has been
fixed.
This reverts commit ccba42504f216f6ffbc54eb2c9af347355f8d86b.
  * initramfs-tools: trigger udevadm add actions with subsystems first.
This updates the initramfs-tools init-top udev script to trigger udevadm
actions with type specified. This mimicks the
systemd-udev-trigger.service. Without type specified only devices are
triggered, but triggering subsystems may also be required and should happen
before triggering the devices. This is the case for example on s390x with
zdev
generated udev rules. (LP: #1713536)

Bug description:
  [Impact]
subsystems udev rules are not processed on boot, thus resulting in missing
devices on boot / before rootfs is mounted.

  [Solution]
trigger udev subsystems and devices, in the initramfs, in that order.

  [Testcase]
Boot s390x system with chzdev configured devices, and cio_ignore=all kernel
command line parameter. The chzdev configured devices should still be
discovered on boot.

  [Original Bug report]

The udev initramfs-tools boot script does not trigger subsystem "add"
uevents. As a result, udev rules that listen to subsystem "add" events
are never activated. This problem exists on at least Ubuntu 16.04 and
  17.10.

On s390, this results in a boot failure if the kernel is configured to
start with an active device black list (kernel parameter
cio_ignore=all,!condev). An example for an affected udev rule looks
  like this:

  ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="subsystem", KERNEL=="ccw",
  RUN{program}+="/bin/sh -c 'echo free 0009,ec30,ec32,f5f0-f5f2 >
  /proc/cio_ignore'"

  A proposed fix would be:

  Modify /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/init-top/udev:

  Replace line
  udevadm trigger --action=add
  with
  udevadm trigger --type=subsystems --action=add
  udevadm trigger --type=devices --action=add

This would also be consistent with the steps that the systemd udev
coldplug unit file performs (see /lib/systemd/system/systemd-udev-
  trigger.service).

  [Regression Potential]
More udev rules will be now triggered, earlier, during initramfs stage of
boot rather than post-pivot-root. However, this is inline with current rootfs
behaviour and thus should not regress behaviour - simply some rules will get
triggered earlier.

  Hi,

could you please update the installer to use linux-hwe version >=

At the moment the kernel/vmlinux in
http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/dists/xenial-proposed/main/installer-ppc64el/current/images/hwe-netboot/ubuntu-installer/ppc64el/
 is based on
linux 4.10.0-28 which doesn't include this ERAT related patch
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1700521 and other P9
fixes also) which cause the installer to fail on POWER9.

A move to hwe kernels with version greater than 4.10.0-29 should work.
  Thanks a lot.

Bug description:
This is fixed in later releases of the `dkimpy` library, specifically
tested was 0.6.2 to see if it's fixed.

`dkimpy` in Python 3 on Xenial *does not work* as expected when
calling `verify` on a signed message in bytes form. It also fails for
'string' form, because it tries to use bytes patterns on a string
  object.

This affects 0.5.6-1, but is fixed in Artful and 0.6.2 already. (I'd
go version by version to find a fix, but I'm not that concerned since
  I've already made a backport of `python3-dkim` in a PPA[1].

As this breaks one of the crucial functions (message verification with
the `verify` function), I'm setting this as a "High" importance bug.

Bug description:
  [SRU Justification]
After the move of livefs builds to lxd containers and use of --rbind with
/dev, cloud image builds fail where setup_mountpoint was called from the common
functions. There is no related teardown for this common function so extra
binary hooks that called setup_mountpoint were forced to duplicate the cleanup
locally which became out of sync with the setup.

This change adds a common function called teardown_mountpoint to
reverse the operations performed by setup_mountpoint and makes use of
  that new function.

  [Test case]
Daily images on cloud-images.ubuntu.com are currently failing to build as a
result of this bug. The daily images are built using a private overlay on top
of the livecd-rootfs in the archive, so unfortunately we can't describe
directly a public end-to-end test case for this.

We will verify this fix by verifying that we are able to produce daily
cloud images again for each of the releases.

  [Regression potential]
For xenial we should also verify this change by doing a test build of all
images against xenial-proposed to guard against any possible regressions.
For zesty, there are no ongoing builds of any projects other than cloud
images so there is no risk of external regressions.

   * Change #1 is only having effect on s390x (so lower risk). There it
fixes the formerly broken location (and not more than that). I don't
see an issue in the change, but there might be some due to e.g. older
python - but testing should confirm that this is no issue.

   * Change #2 is making a python arg that is a string being paased later to
become an append (a list that is concatenated and then passed as one
string like before. I think the change is fine as all former usage was
only with one (1) arg which is behaving the same as it always did. Just
any use case with more than one arg was broken and therefore fixed now.
Again older python might be an unknown here, so testing required.

  Userspace tool common name: virt-install

The userspace tool has the following bit modes: 64

  Userspace rpm: virt-manager

Userspace tool obtained from project website: na

The following upstream commit solves the location validation problem:
f248088 virtinst: adjust media paths for s390x

However, the extra-args are ignored. For this it is necessary to pick the
following commit
  4c3e796 virt-install: concatenate all extra-args argument

Without these fixes it is not possible to perform a Ubuntu
installation of a KVM guest using virt-install.

Minor correction: the binary package (not rpm) is virtinst, built from
  the virt-manager source package.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
This bug hits users who is joined to a domain server (probably MS Active
Directory) where there is a GPO line that doesn't contain an equal sign (=).
See more info in the upstreams bug report linked below. This could be rather
common in corporate environments and normally nothing you "fix" on the domain
controller side to be able to use SSSD clients. This means all clients that
upgrades to 16.04 using SSSD with a GPO containing a line without equal sign
will be affected.

  [Test Case]
Steps to reproduce (you'll need a domain server with GPO containing a line
withouth equal sign!):
  - Install:
apt install krb5-user samba sssd ntp
  - Make sure the default realm is setup properly (FQDN in uppercase):
  dpkg-reconfigure krb5-config
  - Set up /etc/samba/smb.conf like this: https://paste.ubuntu.com/24407627/
  - Set up /etc/sssd/sssd.conf like this: https://paste.ubuntu.com/24407643/
  - File permissions:
  sudo chown root:root /etc/sssd/sssd.conf
  sudo chmod 600 /etc/sssd/sssd.conf
  - Restart services:
  sudo service ntp restart
  sudo service smbd restart
  sudo service nmbd restart
  - Join domain with:
sudo net ads join -U "administra...@domain.com"
"createcomputer=Servers/Virtual" osName=Ubuntu osVer=16.04
  - Start SSSD:
  sudo service sssd start
  - Verify:
  getent passwd administra...@qrtech.se
  - Add creation of home directories on login (check the unchecked box):
  sudo pam-auth-update

  - Now try to login to the server with a domain user:
  arune@d152:~$ ssh ar...@domain.com@server.domain.com
  - This should fail and you'll find in the logs:
  grep "ad_gpo_store_policy_settings" /var/log/sssd/*
  /var/log/sssd/sssd_DOMAIN.COM.log:(Tue Apr 18 15:13:28 2017)
[sssd[be[DOMAIN.COM]]] [ad_gpo_store_policy_settings] (0x0020):
[/var/lib/sss/gpo_cache/DOMAIN.COM/Policies/{31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9}/Machine/Microsoft/Windows
 NT/SecEdit/GptTmpl.inf]: ini_config_parse failed [5][Input/output error]
  /var/log/sssd/sssd_DOMAIN.COM.log:(Tue Apr 18 15:13:28 2017)
[sssd[be[DOMAIN.COM]]] [ad_gpo_store_policy_settings] (0x0020): Error (5) on
line 20: Equal sign is missing.
  /var/log/sssd/sssd_DOMAIN.COM.log:(Tue Apr 18 15:13:28 2017)
[sssd[be[DOMAIN.COM]]] [ad_gpo_store_policy_settings] (0x0020): Error
encountered: 5.

[sssd[be[DOMAIN.COM]]] [ad_gpo_cse_done] (0x0040): ad_gpo_store_policy_settings
failed: [5](Input/output error)

  [Regression Potential]
The current state of SSSD in Xenial is broken for _some_ users (where the GPO
has a line without equal sign) it's _not known_ how many users are affected. A
potential regression could mean even more users are affected by a new unknown
bug.

Display rotation does not work when the NVIDIA driver is used. This is caused
by a distro patch to xserver which disables it, because the NVIDIA driver had
issues in the past.

NVIDIA Graphics driver 375.66 has supported the rotation since Ubuntu
  16.04.

  [Test case]
Install nvidia blob, try to rotate with xrandr or the display capplet.

  [Regression potential]
No other distro shipped with such a patch, so there should be minimal risk of

  2. Further on in the install have all extra args from the example passed
to the kernel like:
  [0.386098] Kernel command line: s390_iommu=strict hvc_iucv=2 [...]

  [Regression Potential]

Expected result: A KVM virtual machine "ubuntu" is installed using a local
preseed file.
  Observed result: Error message
sudo virt-install --name ubuntu --ram 1024 --disk

  Userspace tool common name: virt-install

The userspace tool has the following bit modes: 64

  Userspace rpm: virt-manager

Userspace tool obtained from project website: na

The following upstream commit solves the location validation problem:
f248088 virtinst: adjust media paths for s390x

However, the extra-args are ignored. For this it is necessary to pick the
following commit
  4c3e796 virt-install: concatenate all extra-args argument

Without these fixes it is not possible to perform a Ubuntu
installation of a KVM guest using virt-install.

Minor correction: the binary package (not rpm) is virtinst, built from
  the virt-manager source package.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
Typically when you install Ubuntu on an EFI system, it installs a new default
EFI boot entry that makes the system reboot directly into the OS. During MAAS
installs, curtin is careful to disable that behavior. MAAS requires the default
boot entry to remain PXE, so that it can direct the system to boot from disk or
network as necessary. curtin does this by passing --no-nvram to grub-install
when installing the bootloader.

*Update*: newer curtin releases actually allow the creation of a new
boot entry, but updates the boot menu to make PXE the default. That
change is orthogonal to this bug.

***However***, this doesn't stop a new default boot entry from being
added after deploy. If the user installs a grub package update or
manually runs 'grub-install', booting from disk will become the
default, and MAAS will lose control of the system.

  [Proposed Solution (er... glorified workaround)]
The GRUB package in zesty now has support for setting the --no-nvram flag
*persistently*. This is implemented via a debconf template
(grub2/update_nvram). If curtin sets this flag to "false" during install,
post-deploy grub updates will also pass the --no-nvram flag when running
grub-install.

This isn't a perfect solution - users can still call grub-install
  manually and omit this flag.

  [Test Case]
   - MAAS deploy an EFI system.
   - After deploy, login and run 'sudo apt --reinstall install grub-efi-$(dpkg
--print-architecture)
   - Reboot and observe that the system does not PXE boot.

  [Regression Risk]
   - The GRUB implementation does not change the defaults of the package. The
user would need to opt-in to the "grub2/update_nvram=false". This option is
also only presented to users who specifically request a low debconf priority
(e.g. expert mode installs).
   - XXX curtin risk XXX

Status in dkimpy source package in Xenial:

The installer (in 16.04 and 17.10) creates a separate /boot partition,
when required, of only 487M. This ends up being rather small when you
using the following equation to estimate a minimal size allowing for
  reasonable room for further growth.

  (2*(3*kernel + 4*plymouth-carrying initrd + bootloader))
