Bug description:
  From time to time, CPU vendors release updates to microcode that can
  be loaded into the CPU from the OS. For x86, we have these updates
  available in the archive as amd64-microcode and intel-microcode.

  Sometimes, these microcode updates have addressed security issues with
  the CPU. They almost certainly will again in the future.

  We should ensure that all users of Ubuntu on baremetal x86 receive
  these security updates, and have them applied to the CPU in early boot
  where at all feasible.

  Because these are hardware-dependent packages which we don't want to
  install except on baremetal (so: not in VMs or containers), the
  logical place to pull them into the system is via the kernel, so that
  only the kernel baremetal flavors pull them in. This is analogous to
  linux-firmware, which is already a dependency of the linux-
  image-{lowlatency,generic} metapackages, and whose contents are
  applied to the hardware by the kernel similar to microcode.

  So, please update the linux-image-{lowlatency,generic} metapackages to
  add a dependency on amd64-microcode [amd64], intel-microcode [amd64],
  and the corresponding hwe metapackages also.

  Please time this change to coincide with the next updates of the
  microcode packages in the archive.

  I believe we will also need to promote the *-microcode packages to
  main from restricted as part of this (again, by analogy with linux-
  firmware).

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  simplestreams can't sync images when keystone is configured to use v3,
  keystone v2 is deprecated since mitaka[0] (the version shipped with
  xenial)

  The OpenStack Keystone charm supports v3 only since Queens and
  later[1]

  [Test Case]

  * deploy a openstack environment with keystone v3 enabled
- get a copy of the bundle available at
http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/hkhsHKqt4h/ , this bundle deploys a minimal version
of xenial-mitaka.

  Expected result:

  - "glance image-list" lists trusty and xenial images
  - the file glance-simplestreams-sync/0:/var/log/glance-simplestreams-sync.log
contains details of the images pulled from cloud-images.u.c (example:
https://pastebin.ubuntu.com/p/RWG8QrkVDz/ )

  Actual result:

  - "glance image-list" is empty
  - the file glance-simplestreams-sync/0:/var/log/glance-simplestreams-sync.log
contains the following stacktrace

  [Regression Potential]

  * A possible regression will manifest itself figuring out if v2 or v3
  should be used, after the connection is made there are no further
  changes introduced by this SRU

  [Other Info]

  I was deploying a Mitaka Trusty 16.04 charm based Openstack cloud
  (using the cloud archives), including glance-simplestreams-sync, using
  keystone v3.

  Once I had everything deployed, the glance-simplestreams-sync service
  couldn't authenticate because it's using keystone v2, not v3, as you
  can see from the following:

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1837734] Proposed package removed from archive

2019-09-17 Thread Steve Langasek
The version of nss in the proposed pocket of Xenial that was purported
to fix this bug report has been removed because one or more bugs that
were to be fixed by the upload have failed verification and been in this
state for more than 10 days.

** Changed in: nss (Ubuntu Xenial)

Status in nss source package in Disco:

Bug description:
  [IMPACT]
  nss is not a FIPS certified library. On a machine running FIPS enabled
kernel, the library by default goes into FIPS mode if
/proc/sys/crypto/fips_enabled=1. This is an untested configuration and since
libnss3 is not a certified library we propose disabling reading the
'fips_enabled' flag and therefore switching the library automatically into FIPS
mode.

  The proposed patch disables reading the /proc/sys/crypto/fips_enabled
  flag. The users of the library however can force nss into FIPS mode
  via an environment variable. We plan to leave it as is so as not to
  regress existing users who may be using it.

  The issue impacts libnss3 versions in eoan, disco, bionic and xenial.

  lsb_release -rd
  Description:  Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS
  Release:  16.04

  Version: 2:3.28.4-0ubuntu0.16.04

  [FIX]
  This fix proposes to disable libnss3 reading proc/sys/crypto/fips_enabled. We
only want fips certified modules reading this file and running in fips mode.
libnss3 is not one of our fips certified modules, so should not be reading this
along with our fips certified modules to determine whether to run in fips mode.

  Users who do want to run the library in FIPS mode can do so by using
  the environment variable "NSS_FIPS". We propose to leave it as is so
  as not to regress anyone using this. The user who is using this option
  should be doing so with the awareness.

  [TEST]
  Tested on a xenial and bionic desktop ISO running FIPS enabled kernel and in
FIPS mode. With the patch fix no crashes were observed when launching firefox
browser.
  Without the patch fix, firefox crashes.

  Tested on a xenial and bionic desktop ISO running non-FIPS generic
  kernel. With the patch fix, firefox worked as expected and no changes
  were observed.

  [REGRESSION POTENTIAL]
  The regression potential for this is small. A FIPS kernel is required to
  create /proc/sys/crypto/fips_enabled and it is not available in standard
ubuntu archive. For users forcing FIPS through environment variable, nothing
has changed.

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1842266] Re: Operation against ntfs in ubuntu_ltp_syscalls test will fail with EROFS

2019-09-17 Thread AaronMa
The syscall is not implemented on FUSE which ntfs uses.
LTP sync_file_range02 testcase skip FUSE on purpose.

No failure reported by testcase, just error in log.

So let's ignore this issue.

Bug description:
  [Background]
  Many packages are affected by the requirement to support the new era "Reiwa"
(令和)

  This is the meta bug to track packages that need fixes; which packages
  have already been SRUd to previous releases, how to prioritize the
  work needed, and general test cases for verifying that things are
  working as expected.

  [Impact]
  Users who run Ubuntu in Japanese.

  [Test cases]

  == Date conversion ==

  On applications that support writing dates in long form, or with
  symbols to denote era (either in X00.00.00 format or in GG1G5G1G
  format  (G- glyph; X- character):

  1) Enable date formatting in each of the above formats that are supported
(long form or symbols)
  2) Type in '2019/05/01' to be formatted, verify that it shows as "令和1年5月1日"
or "R1.05.01"
  3) Type in '2019/04/30' to be formatted, verify that it shows as "平成31年4月30日"
or "H31.4.30"

  == Date output ==

  1) Set date to 2019/05/01
  2) Output date; verify that the year it is displayed as "令和元年"
  3) Set date to 2019/04/30
  4) Output date; verify that the year is diplayed as "平成31年"

  === Displaying formatted year for Japanese era with glibc ===

  Run:
  LC_ALL=ja_JP.utf8 date +%EY -d 20190430   # previous era (should still work
as before SRUs)
  or
  LC_ALL=ja_JP.utf8 date +%EY -d 20190501   # new era (should now correctly
display the new era)

  == Character maps / font support ==

  1) Search for character "SQUARE ERA NAME"
  2) Verify that the results include at least "SQUARE ERA NAME HEISEI" and
"SQUARE ERA NAME REIWA" (there should also be Syouwa, Taisyou and Meizi), and
that the glyphs are readable:

   - SQUARE ERA NAME HEISEI: ㍻
   - SQUARE ERA NAME REIWA: 令和 (in a single glyph)

  Display of the Reiwa square glyph is font-specific; it may show simply
  as a empty square or a square with hex characters. If that is the
  case, the unicode data supports the new character, but the selected
  font does not include the new glyph.

  == Typing / input methods ==

  1) Type in 'heisei'
  2) Verify that the input method in use gives you an option "平成", and
optionally also the square era glyph.
  3) Type in 'reiwa'
  4) Verify that the input method in use gives you an option that includes
"令和", and possibly also the square era glyph (if supported for Heisei)

  5) Type in the following strings, and verify that the options are provided in
the input method:
  * "れいわ"(reiwa) => "令和"
  * "れいわ"(reiwa) => "㋿"
  * "2018ねん"(2018nenn) => "平成三十年"
  * "2019ねん"(2019nenn) => "平成三十一年"
  * "2019ねん"(2019nenn) => "令和元年"
  * "2020ねん"(2020nenn) => "令和二年"

  /!\ Some fonts, like fonts-noto-cjk, currently have no glyph for
  U+32FF.

  [Regression potential]
  This is a potentially large change as it impacts font display, character sets
as well as date conversions. As such, extreme care should be taken to ensure
that regressions are avoided, such that dates previous to May 1, 2019 continue
to display as before, and dates onward are displayed with the new era symbols.
The included test cases account for verifying the continued behavior or
previous dates.

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1828596] Proposed package removed from archive

2019-09-17 Thread Steve Langasek
The version of makedumpfile in the proposed pocket of Bionic that was
purported to fix this bug report has been removed because one or more
bugs that were to be fixed by the upload have failed verification and
been in this state for more than 10 days.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
  After a CPU add/hotplug operation on Power systems, kdump will fail after a
crash. The kdump kernel needs to be reloaded after a CPU add/hotplug.

  [Test case]
  Do CPU add/hotplug, trigger a crash, and check for a successful kdump.

  [Regression potential]
  Multiple reloads caused by multiple sequential CPU adds may cause spurious
log results, and systemd may fail to properly reload the kdump kernel. This has
been handled by resetting the failure counter when doing such reloads.

  ---Problem Description---
  kdump fails when crash is triggered after CPU add operation.

  Machine Type = na

  ---System Hang---
   Crashed in early boot process of kdump kernel after crash

  Had to issue system reset from HMC to reclaim

  ---Steps to Reproduce---
   1. Configure kdump.
  2. Add cpu from HMC.
  3. Trigger crash.
  4. Machine hangs after crash as below:

  ---
  [169250.213166] IPI complete
  [169250.234331] kexec: Starting switchover sequence.
  I'm in purgatory
   --- STRUCK HERE ---

  ---uname output---
  na

  ---Debugger---
  A debugger is not configured

  == Comment: #1 - Hari Krishna Bathini  - 2019-05-10 05:56:46 ==
  The problem is, kexec udev rule to restart kdump-tools service - when a core
is added,
  is not being triggered. The old DT created by kexec (before the core is added)
  is being used by KDump Kernel. So, when system crashes on a thread from
  the added core(s), KDump kernel is failing to get the 'boot_cpuid' and
  eventually failing to boot..

  == Comment: #2 - Hari Krishna Bathini - 2019-05-10 06:02:27 ==
  The udev rule when CPU is added is not triggered because ppc64 does not
  eject add/remove event when a CPU is hot added/removed. It only ejects
  online/offline event to user space when CPU is hot added/removed.

  So, the below udev rules are never triggered when needed:

  SUBSYSTEM=="cpu", ACTION=="add", PROGRAM="/bin/systemctl try-restart
kdump-tools.service"
  SUBSYSTEM=="cpu", ACTION=="remove", PROGRAM="/bin/systemctl try-restart
kdump-tools.service"

  Also, with how CPU hot add & remove are handled in ppc64, a udev trigger
  to reload kdump after CPU is hot removed is NOT necessary. So, fix the CPU
  hot add case by updating the udev rule and drop the udev rule meant for CPU
  hot remove in the kdump udev rules file:

  SUBSYSTEM=="cpu", ACTION=="online", PROGRAM="/bin/systemctl try-
  restart kdump-tools.service"

  Use the kernel default for crashkernel offset

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * The value chosen for ppc64el of 128MB aligns with that of the
  kernel default. That may change some day, so it would be best to let
  the kernel decide what value it should use. If the value does change
  and the kernel is not allowed to choose a value, this may stop the
  kernel from booting on a production system.

  [Test Case]

   Run `cat /etc/default/grub.d/kdump-tools.cfg`

   * Expected result: there is no offset specified at the end of the
  line (.e.g, @128M).

   * Actual result: For Xenial, Bionic, Disco, and Eoan there are
  offsets specified.

  [Regression Potential]

   * Right now, the offset described in the kdump-tools.cfg aligns with
  that of what the kernel would select, so since they are the same we
  would expect no change in operation.

  Original bug description follows:

  == Comment: #0 - Hari Krishna Bathini  - 2018-01-08
01:06:41 ==
  ---Problem Description---
  A default offset of 128MB is enforced for crashkernel by kdump-tools utility
  overriding the kernel default.

  While the kernel default offset for crashkernel is also 128MB, that may change
  and the right thing to do would be to let the kernel decide on the offset of
  crashkernel in the default scenario..

  Get rid of "@128M" in kdump-tools.cfg file

  Contact Information = hbath...@in.ibm.com

  ---uname output---
  na

  Machine Type = na

  ---Debugger---
  A debugger is not configured

  ---Steps to Reproduce---
   # cat /etc/default/grub.d/kdump-tools.cfg
  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="$GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT
crashkernel=2G-4G:320M,4G-32G:512M,32G-64G:1024M,64G-128G:2048M,128G-:4096M@128M"
  ---

  The offset is specified via kdump-tools where as the kernel may be the right
place to
  set an offset by default..

  Userspace tool common name: kdump-tools

  The userspace tool has the following bit modes: 64-bit

  Userspace rpm: kdump-tools

  Userspace tool obtained from project website: na
