Re: GTS vs. ST1100, luggage, etc.

2000-08-06 Thread RangerJay

Speaking as a guy who owns both a GTS and an ST, I feel I must defend my ST.
I've spoken with the guy who was involved in the original product planning
for the ST. The luggage moves very intentionally, pivoting slightly on the
horizontal mounting axis to maintain a better balance and center of gravity.
Allowing it to move actually improves handling. It's also so much better
integrated, narrower and better looking than the GTS's luggage, it's almost
ridiculous anyone on this list would bring it up.
I love my GTS, but when it comes to luggage design and integration, the
ST wins by a huge margin. And as for the comment from Shawn about the ST in
front of him blowing around, that was either the rider or a defective bike.
My ST is very slightly more steady in wind than the GTS. And that's with a
much taller windshield on the ST. As a big plus, the ST is also simply more
trouble-free compared to the very reliable GTS. (Can you say, shaft drive?)
Of course, there are reasons I like the GTS too: It's a bit lighter and
more of an attention getter. Equally comfortable on long rides (That
surprised me.) and a bit better handling in tighter curves. At the original
list price, however, the ST was a much better value which is why it's still
around and the GTS isn't.
I could go on, but I've already pissed off too many people that will
always love the GTS because that's what they have. So I'm only accepting
flames from those who have actually owned both.

You need 4 speedbleeders. 1-front brake,2-rear

installed do not swap them around, just get on their

One more answer to your question, Mike. YES! Change
often--@ least once a year and probably more if in a
humid climate or as hoses get older. As far as
removing the caliper to elevate--this is VERY
necessary if removing air--if there is no air to begin
with, don't bother--you can't make it out of brake
fluid! More important to bleed often than elevate,
IMHO

Well, my 46 litre Oz Krausers (with Yamaha label on outside) have a warning
stuck on inside, in several languages, saying that the bike should not be
ridden over 80 mph or 130 kph with the "accessories" (ie bags)
fitted
Mind you, I haven't obeyed this warning and have suffered no consequences!!

No flame, Shawn. Just an explanation and a defense of MOB (my other bike).

You'll love the SV, but the saddlebags suck!
Right now, I'm looking to be in Albany the last weekend in October. There's a
family event on the 29th. I may try to fly in a couple days early and escape
that evening. We'll see where the best airfares fall about that time.

Alan
from personal experience I can tell you it AIN't the weight. Just got back
from visiting friends in Virginia, came west then north through western VA,
eastern central KY. My GTS used to be absolutely rock stable, any speed,
any truck passing, any cross winds. Never more than a slight push. I just
installed the clearview +5 I got from Paul I've got some wear on a set of
BT57's. It's twitchy as hell now. You absolutely do not pass a truck in a
turn, nor let one pass you, even on the slab. The gusty winds today cut my
cornering speed 15-20MPH cause I can't hold a line through a turn if the
wind changed. Dropped 2 PSI front, 3 PSI back which helped some.

I'm going to put the stock windscreen back on to verify but I'm pretty sure
the tires are a major contributor. I seemed to me they were getting so they
went off center more quickly as they wore. Anybody else had this experience
with 57's?

That extra 200lbs was very comforting when the GTS is
employed in its intended performance envelope.

Rob, my GTS bags came out of Germany and they did not have warning stickers. I
do not recall seeing any speed warning in the manual either. My BMW R100GS ,
and a former R1100RS had warnings on the bags as well as in the manual about
bags and speed. At above 85mph or above my R100GS starts to develop a rear end
weave that is very unnerving with the factory bags. Thank you for the
correction.

2000-08-06 Thread Steven Puig

I happen to have a GS1150 in addition to the GTS had the left factory
saddlebag on the BMW blow off the bike last March. I was travelling on a
bumpy highway (most are bumpy around here), riding behind a friend on an R1
at speeds well above the recommended maximum. I didn't realize the bag was
missing until I arrived home with my lopsided bike. Despite efforts to
repeat this with my replacement bag, I've managed to hang on to it thus far.
