Delvac was: GTS oil comsumption

2000-08-11 Thread Louis Tweed

If truckers are willing to put this stuff in $75,000 motors and leave it
in there for up to 25,000 miles , it has to be good.

There are a couple reasons why large diesel engines run non synthetic
oils-generally. My father drives tractor-trailers and also is a mechanical
engineer (I know,,don't ask.) He knows the advantages of running synthetic
lubricants. He uses Delvac because #1 he always gets a spinner oil
filtration system on his trucks (filters down to one micron.) #2 because
Caterpillar requires you to change the oil every 25,000 miles regardless if
it is a synthetic or not. When you change 6-7 gallons of oil per change
along with $15 worth of filters (at least, depends on which change it is)
synthetic doesn't add up. He does however run synthetic fluids in the axles
and transmission.

I am not saying the Delvac oil isn't a good oil, just the big truck scenario
doesn't mean much. I use Delvac in my John Deere, Caterpillar forklift, log
splitter, and my WR (because Yamaha wants me to change the oil every 2.5
hours-what a joke.)

I'd suggest riding it in an MSF Experienced Rider Course in New Mexico
heat during mid-summer. :) Seriously, though, yes you can hear the fan
if it comes on while you're sitting at idle. My GTS does NOT tend to get
that hot though. In contrast, the FZR 1000 I used to own would get hot
much more easily, presumably a difference in the tuning of the two motors.

And yes, when I rode the FZR for an MSF ERC for NMMSP (gawd, lookit all

concerned me at the time.

RE: Yamaha's warranty VS Normal wear. getting fluffy

2000-08-11 Thread Motorcycle

as I have mentioned in another email, EVERY Yamaha dealer I have talk to
about this in 6 countries has said that 1/3 litter at 1000 KM is normal.
when it got to 1 liter in 500 miles then they said it was time to get the
engine worked on. that happened at about 60,000 miles. and yes the hotter
the bike runs the worse the problem.

Has anyone ever had a manufacturer admit that an engine has abnormal oil
usage?

My Chevy truck has used a quart /1500 miles since new and now has 172,000+
miles still uses a quart /1500 miles. Dealer said it was normal usage! I
have noticed the GTS uses more in hot weather but I can't say whether this
is because it actually does use more or because I ride harder when it's warm
out.

Bill

The bad new is that he says that is "normal" wear after 50,000 miles, and
won't be covered under warranty !!!

Is this normal ?
Did this happen to any of you guys ?
Any tough for AJ ?

Help !

Resolution of ABS HU claim

2000-08-11 Thread skfurr

Well, Yamaha finally capitulated. They agreed to cover the HU, but
not the labor to install it! Seems strange to me. They claim that they'll
replace the part, but the labor is my expense because there's no
warranty left. Dealer claims labor is about 2 hours, or $100. Dealer
also says that list on HU is ~ $1800.

I guess I got out okay, seeing how they originally wouldn't accept any
responsibility at all. Is this perhaps a change on Yamaha's part from
their earlier take that they'd replace it completely free? Or is my dealer
taking me for a ride? The tech at the dealer has been very cool, and
I find it hard to believe he's doing anything underhanded...

Thanks,

Re: Resolution of ABS HU claim

2000-08-11 Thread Andy Perry

Since there is no "official" policy on HU out of warranty failure, the
Yamaha stance appears to be flexible on a case by case basis. We all were
aware that the "Christmas gift" back in December would probably be
time-sensitive, the grace period appears to be coming to an end. So
everyone needs to test re-test their ABS, try to get failing units
replaced before Yamaha closes the door for good.

I just replaced my back tire because I had two punctures that occurred the
same day on a two hour ride. What are the chances of that happening? They
both could have happened at the same time, I guess. I plugged the first
hole the tire kept going flat.. then I found the second.

The best thing about loaner bikes is......

2000-08-11 Thread pbenson

..that when you give 'em back, you realize what a great ride the GTS
really is. The BMW oilhead is OK as bikes go, and very nice handling in
the city, but it's not the bike the GTS is.

I mentioned that last weekend I picked up a screw in the back tire, and
left my bike in the shop for the replacement. When I picked it up today,
the guy who worked on it said that the screw was not the real problem, the
real problem was a mesquite thorn that was also in the tire from the same
ride.

It can happen.

Riding Jacket

2000-08-11 Thread Dave Morrow

OK Guys,
Time to educate me again. I'm out looking at leather riding jackets. Any
advise as to what qualities I should be looking for brands to stay away
from? Would you recommend a jacket with body armour like T-Pro or others?
How restrictive is body armour? I don't anticipate any riding in wet
weather. I'm looking for some protection for my hide should I go down.

Thanks again to all!!
