Re: ABS nightmare...
Since you're to replace your rear swingarm anyway, wouldn't it be cool to replace it with a VTR 1000 swingarm, there's someone around here who knows how to do so. It will cost you,but its got to be out there. Man, I would be so pissed at the dealer if that were me. Since MAY Geez-F-xmas. -Original Message- From: Thomas H. Speaking of ABS nightmares. first discovered the problem w/ mine back in Sep '99. Took it in in Oct for a top-end job, 4-1/2 months later (back-ordered rings...) they can't find what's wrong w/ the ABS, even after replacing everything. I needed the bike, so I took it back until they could figure out what to do. End of May I bring it back in to rebuild the suspension, and there it's been ever since. I've gone rounds w/ Danny in Customer "Relations" (800-962-7926), and Sol from the Warranty Dept was supposed to be working on it. The best Danny could do was to send my shop (Montclair Yamaha) an updated set of manuals - real good problem solver he is. Now, I just spoke w/ Montclair this morning and am just now being told that the bearings in the rear swing arm were so badly worn that they wore the bearing cup to an egg-shape. Needless to say they can't come up w/ another swing arm - which I find hard to believe since Japan was producing these bikes up until just last year. They seem to believe that the chattering and locking up of the brakes is not, in fact, faulty ABS but rather a result of the rear wheel chattering because of the worn bearings. 1) Yea, nea? Any opinions out there (I know, silly question). 2) Any rear swing arms available out there? 3) Word of advice - don't wait till you've got 170,000 miles before checking the bearings... (they were fine at 100,000, really!) Thanks, -T '94 GTS == Thomas H. Re: Medic !!!!
Sven the rest of the GTSers, here's the differences in part numbers when opening both the 93 and 94 ECU boxes to compare parts (i.e E-Prom). Whom ever can make heads or tales on the specifics of these parts please enlighten. 93 ECU 112100-0040 12V TBDF03 D ND MG2530 (ND=DENSO the ECU manufacturer I assume) 1N11B 94 ECU 112100-0050 12V TBDF04 E D MG3840 (don't know which manufacturer D is) 1R09B And now for the TPS voltage measurements at the 6 different RPMs between which the dreaded surging occurs (BTW Sven your measured values are too high). The ECU pots were all set at the 1:00 o'clock position and TPS was set close to the full clockwise setting. I will next try a different TPS setting (I expect the voltage values to be different (lower) but the voltage delta between the 6 different RPMs to be approx. the same). 93 ECU 0.811v @ 800RPM 0.863v @ 1,000RPM 0.898v @ 2,000RPM 0.916v @ 3,000RPM 0.957v @ 4,000RPM 0.986v @ 5,000RPM 94 ECU 0.815v @ 800RPM 0.867v @ 1,000RPM 0.925v @ 2,000RPM 0.940v @ 3,000RPM 0.982v @ 4,000RPM 1.000v @ 5,000RPM After physically testing both ECUs on my bike I can say that the mileage drops when using the 94 ECU by about 3-4MPG (93 ECU=40-43MPG, 94 ECU=37-40 max). And now for the seat-of-the-pants part of the test. The surging behavior I estimate to be about the same or maybe a tad bit less with the 94 but not worth the MPG penalty. The testing continues RSR... Guinea Pig George ___ Why pay for something you could get for free? NetZero provides FREE Internet Access and Email http://www.netzero.net/download/index.html
Re: Test rode....
The GTS is a nearly ten-year-old machine. Newer bikes are faster and in many ways better. Yet none has the unique features the GTS has of course. And you'll think the Blackbird is slow once you ride a Hayabusa. Manufacturers didn't stop development once they built the GTS. But they haven't progressed much in the sport-touring category. -Jay In a message dated 9/2/00 4:02:27 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: new 1999 Blackbird last weekend All I can say is WHAT A MACHINE
Re: Medic !!!! ( IC numbers)
BE CAREFUL! For what ever you do make sure you are static grounded. That is you should have a wire to ground you to the bike and anything else. You can burn out such devices and not even know it. I work for a radio system company and we must wear static dispersant shoes, clothing and wrist straps to ground us when handling IC's and other electronic components. As for the numbers of course they are two different IC's. They have different circuits and software made and programed into them. You will have too most likely contact the manufacturer for details. Or someone within Yamaha that works on the software to make any progress on what is going on. The voltage readings that you are getting maybe the difference in the fact that 94 year circuit sensors have had some component changes. That is they have been reprogramed or calibrated to match the newer needs of the IC. Therefore it maybe why different year ECU don't work well with other years. You have to calibrate them or set them other than the 1'o clock setting. There maybe some devices that have been changed to match the 94 ECU that we are not aware of. Oxygen sensor etc. If you can track down all the devices that are connected with the 94 and check them with the 93, if they are different numbers then those devices have different voltages probably signaling the ECU. That's maybe why you have different MPG readings and such. There's a difference somewhere with the 93 vrs 94 other than the ECU which effects operation and tuning. Worst case is that other fixed parts within the ECU, TPS or somewhere and you have to match them up for use with the 94 model year prom. Anybody changing over will have to buy a bunch of modules or sensors. Ideas from experience with electronic devices at work. Changing the software prom sometimes we then have to reprogram and tune units differently than the before. Or find that resistors, caps, diodes and such have to be changed in circuits somewhere else. Yes, it's a very nice bike, and I'd personally consider buying one at some point. Makes the GTS feel like a truck in comparison and the power is nothing short of phenomenal. The Blackbird is not a light motorcycle, but feels lighter than it is, and does handle well. The power is as you say. The bike is easy to ride in a sedate way, but kicks up well when asked to. As an alternative to the GTS?? Well, it certainly lacks the uniqueness factor, it isn't a cutting edge bike and likely never will be viewed as such. In the top end wars, it barely edged the long-standing ZX, only to be thoroughly bested by the 'Busa.not one for the history books. No hard luggage, and before you say it, I'm not a fan of the GIVI option. The XX and the VFR both seem to lack luggage to protect sales for the ST, right Jay?? :) I'd still consider owning one, and would be happy to tour on it. Phil What an experience, God help me in my desires. It's 6:00am and we are off for Hilton Head and Savanna for the 3 day weekend, happy Labor Day to all. P.S. Enjoy Savanna, it's a nice town. And happy Labor Day to all from New Mexico also. For those overseas.it's one of those U.S. holidays that's really an excuse to go to the lake (ocean for Gearge) and get drunk, in honor of.hey, what's this all about?? :)

Has anyone seen the MRA touring screen? I might like a taller screen for colder weather. Louis
Re: Test rode....
Did I mention the Hayabusa I installed the Yosh cams, power commander module and akropovich exhaust on? I saw 190 on the speedo. Meaning, the needle was pointing to 190, not just noticed they included it. That was power.. alas... still a suzuki.
