Re: Mystery Hose
Hi Hugh, We are 4 pages out from each other. Have a look at 3-39 ( air filter cleaning ) top picture. Breather hose 4 , That's the one atb Nick T
Re: Airbox Removal
Hi Fred , I got rid of my airbox and fitted KN filters. I also fitted Thunder Ace down pipes. Performance was up from 94 BHP to 106 BHP. Fuel consumption down from 48 mpg to 45/46 mpg. Bike coped ok with the changes. It looses a small amount of power lower down the rev range, but has a bit more up top .It sounds great under full throttle . atb Nick T
Re: Mystery Hose
The hose probably comes from the steering tube rubber gator. It connects at the top , under yoke. See page 3-35 top picture , off to the right of the air box , at the front of the air box. atb Nick T
Re: gasoline
Hi Chase, I recently did the mod to my tank , that you need to do to yours. Remove the tank , find some containers to put your gas in. Its best if you use up most of your gas first . At the bottom of the tank is a drain bolt to remove the last bit of gas . Now remove the small bolts that hold the fuel pump/pipes ( the pump is in the tank ) Now remove the pump , you need to turn it abit , to get it out . YOU SHOULD DO ALL THIS IN THE OPEN AIR I vented the tank over night using a fan to blow air at/through the tank. You need a plastic bag , some tape ( i used duct tape ) and a dremell cutting tool . Inside the tank you will see the flapper / neck. Feel for the lip around the neck inside , this is where you should aim to cut through. Wrap the plastic bag around the neck ( inside )above the lip, use the tape or a zip tie to hold it there. It catches the metal filings and reduces the chance of sparks inside the tank. Now look inside the filler neck see where the weld is , you need to cut just below this , with the dremell using a cutting disc. When you have cut the neck out remove any burrs. Now rebuild tank , remember to tighten the DRAIN BOLT. Job done . atb Nick T PS thanks to the list for telling me how to do it in the first place. I don't remember who told me and can't find it in earlier messages. I hope i've explained operation to list standards.
Re: GTS - Possible major engine problems....
Hi Jon, What's the engine vibration like , when the engine is in neutral and the clutch is pulled in ? atb Nick T
Re: GTS - Possible major engine problems....
How would you describe the vibration? High pitched Low rumble whine knocking feels lumpy buzz chatter is throttle crisp on rev up atb Nick T
Re: Power Sports Pro
Hi Dave, The other manual is on part No 4BH-28197-2A I've got it if you need info , just let me know. atb Nick T
Re: Potential ECU Failure
Hi Stan, Can you give some more info, what have you checked? why do you think their is no gas getting to the injectors? the pump may be running but not building up the right pressure. The filter may be blocked. Do you have gas pressure build up after the filter ( to the fuel rail ). With the air box removed , using a long bladed screwdriver ( blade to injector , handle to ear ) you may be able to hear the injectors clicking when spinning over. atb Nick T
Re: my GTS wants to shake me off!
One other place to check is the front lower arm , side to side play. Mine had some side to side play which i shimmed out , on the left hand side arm bolt where it connects to the frame , by turning the large washer round because it had become slightly dished. atb Nick T
Re: TPS problems
Hi Dave , I have a jpeg that shows you how to set dealer mode, but need your email address to send it. The TPS is on the right hand side , throttle body (No4 cylinder). Your message says ( right next to the throttle ) it sounds as though your looking by the handle bars. You need to be looking below the air box, at where the carbs would have been located. atb Nick T
Re: my GTS wants to shake me off!
Why do you want to ride with out your hands on the handlebars? I wouldn't try it with three cases , carrying a load or not. If you take off the two side cases and the problem goes away then its down to aerodynamics. More drag at the back , making the front light and unstable. atb Nick T
Re: one bike?
One man's dream. If i ever had the chance to own a bike other than the GTS this would be it. A Britten motorcycle , an unbelievable bike , built by hand from scratch. Its my birthday today and my wife bought me the video ,"One man's dream", plus a T shirt . I've just finished watching the video, and all i can say is "if you love bikes" Buy it . Its the only video i've watched that brings feelings that i cannot describe , its awesome as far as i'm concerned. Here's their web address www.britten.co.nz/ take alook for yourself. And no its not a sales plug and i don't work for Britten. atb Nick T
Re: videos (was Re: one bike?)
You can get the video from www.britten.co.nz/ look under shop, "One man's dream" . I have looked at Duke video's web site but its not listed. =But Nick, it has forks! =Grant Gall I'd have one with forks anyway ( although their not quite forks ). =Make that WAS, not Is, Louis. Britten died of cancer a few =years ago. =Phil A sad loss of a very talented man , his company is still running, maybe they will start production again one day . atb Nick T
info please
Hi listers Can anyone tell me why my replies to the list seem to reach all listers , but not the list-archive. The last one showed up about a week ago. See GTS to FZR stuff. But i have posted 4 since then. 2 went to Rich when Warm, 2 went to Fluffy metrics. Does the archive only get up dated once a week or do i just have to wait and see. Could here be a problem with my email settings? Could it be the UK net is a bit slow? Thanks in advance Nick T
Re: Rich when warm..........
Here's some links for you to try. www.keyworth.net/gts/ www.cuci.nl/~schings/ http://home.planet.nl/~dreuning/ www.geocities.com/~raddboy/ www.mbnet.mb.ca/~neelin/motorcycle/gts.html www.gts1000.org/ www.lanouette.net/indexeng.htm Anyone know of other links? atb Nick T
Re: Fluffy metrics
(((Why not? You get _more_ of them!))) My wife agrees , but she says their alot SMALLER. So she says , she will keep the inches for now, as she can handle them alot easier. Nick T
Re: GTS to FZR stuff
ECU mods , try http://www.vanaaken.com and follow these links. Contents page. Superchips conversions. Superchips for motorcycles. EXAUST. Removed my collector box down pipes 2 years ago ( including catalyser inside ) Replaced with down pipes/collector box from yamaha thunder ace . Cut thread lug off old box for sensor and rewelded to new one . Cut and rewelded outlet to muffler to line up correctly. Welded plate on where valve used to go on collector ( thunder ace ) Lined up at head ok . A lot less restrictive , more power , from 94bhp to 106 with filters ( KN ) Bike runs ok , slight loss of bottom end power. atb Nick T
Super chips for tea anyone
Hi all, Heres some info for anyone interested in ECU mods , try http://www.vanaaken.com and follow these links. Contents page. Superchips conversions. Superchips for motorcycles. If you want to buy said product, you may be able to purchase from this site , i don't know because i haven't tried it. Or you could purchase from http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk but you have to buy their catalogue first, and i haven't tried this one either. But they do have the superchip listed for the GTS in their catalogue. atb Nick T
Re: MRA photo request; rear brake gremlin
Bill , you are probably correct on this one . I have always thought it was ( old dried up brake fluid ) because it was a yellowish colour before rubbing. Anyway better out than in . Thanks for the info. atb Nick T
Re: MRA photo request; rear brake gremlin
Another thing to check is , are the two halves of the caliper bolted up tight. Also the 'O' rings in between the two halves , are in good state of repair, but their probably ok , unless caliper was loose / stripped down alot. atb Nick T
Re: Nick
Hi Shawn, Can't seem to find read only mode on my PC, so i'll have to use read write mode from now on. My apologies to Kevin Terry . But being connected to poor service was a bitter pill to swallow. I'am totally dedicated to bikes , and i wouldn't knowingly do anything to harm them or the people who ride them . BTW the flapper removal is a great mod , thanks to list for that one. Its nice to see petrol ( gas ) in the tank , for a change. atb Nick T
Re: ABS Nightmare.....
Kevin, i worked for FJ1200 owners club on a casual basis , about 1+ years ago . And yes i did strip down and rebuild some ABS pumps but i wasn't the only person who stripped and rebuilt them. I wouldn't have rebuilt an ABS pump with parts missing . I couldn't have sent the parts you say i left out because i didn't have access to peoples names and addresses. I was offering Thomas my help to sort out his ABS fault , but he probobly won't want it now. I've been to your website and read through Rebuilding the GTS1000 ABS Pump , its great info for doing the job at home , anyone taking on this sometimes difficult task should visit your site first. One thing you may want to add to your site is that sometimes during the static ABS test (self-diagnostic test) a fault accures where the front brake line builds up loads of pressure, which causes the lever to extend fully and can blow the mastercylinder seals if you didn't hold the lever thightly enough, while someone releases the brake fluid pressure at the bleed nipple. Jest something to be aware of when doing the test. Poor service should always be highlighted on the list . May be it would be better for all listers if i go to read only mode from now on , for being connected to poor service. Nick T
Re: ABS nightmare...
Hi Thomas, Re your ABS nightmare, I've stripped down quite a few ABS units , repaired them , and done fault finding, for the FJ1200 owners club, work shop( based in the UK ), in the past. If you would like to try and repair your ABS , i'am willing to give you any advice you need , to try and sort yours out. I'am sure other listers will give you advice as well should you need it, as there must be plenty of us who have had problems in the past. It may take a while doing it over the web , but its worth a try. So long as you get your bike back. atb Nick T
Re: ABS Replacement; did you pay labor?
Hi Greg, Tell your dealer , you didn't realise your bike was to be used for training apprentices when they were replacing your ABS unit. I've taken mine in and out twice , and it only takes 3 hours with a coffee break . atb Nick T
Re: rippling chain
Hi Dave, Check your wheel alinement, if it is ok, don't take chances with chains , get it checked out. THINGS TO CHECK Does your chain pull off the back sprocket much? Has it done 2 + miles? Do you use a scotoiler? ( chains last longer with a scotoiler ) Do the sprockets look worn? Is the front sprocket nut loose? Is it correctly adjusted? atb Nick T
Re: Question about Catalyser
Removed my collector box down pipes 2 years ago ( including catalyser inside ) Replaced with down pipes/collector box from yamaha thunder ace . Cut thread lug off old box for sensor and rewelded to new one . Cut and rewelded outlet to muffler to line up correctly. Welded plate on where valve used to go on collector ( thunder ace ) Lined up at head ok . A lot less restrictive , more power , from 94bhp to 106 with filters ( KN ) Bike runs ok , slight loss of bottom end power. atb Nick T
Re: ABS HU not covered?!?
ABS unit can fail and you will not recieve a warning light . Because the light warns about electical faults only. ABS unit can seize / jam inside ( not electical ) , but you should have normal braking ( without ABS ). atb Nick T
Re: ECU Failure (was Atlanta)
Hi steve, What rpm does your problem occur at ? I haven't had time to read the manual yet ,as i have just returned from a weekend away. I will have a look into it over the next 2 days and see if i can find anything to help you out . This may be of interest , when i took my bike to the red line and beyond , it cut out 2 cylinders to protect the engine and the EFI light started flashing . It only came on to all 4 cylinders when the engine reached 5000 rpm approx , may be your ECU thinks your bike is over reving . Could point to your TPS miss reading , Hence IPS error due to pressure change caused by 2 cylinders going down . atb Nick T
Re: Atlanta
Hi Steve , So whats your symptoms ( ECU ,etc ,etc ) may be someone on the list could help? atb Nick T
Re: newbie to list and bike covers
Hi Doug welcome to the list , i'am fairly new to the list my self and live in bristol , UK. Its a goldmine of information from those who know ,and i have had some great replies to questions asked . I would like to come to USA one day and meet up with some fellow GTS owners as their doesn't seem to be many in the UK , i've only met three other owners so far. You will find some interesting mods on the list if you search back a bit ,as well as some after market parts to improve your bike , ie ( heli bars ) i'd never heard of them before i joined the list , i'll probably get some. atb Nick T
Re: does size matter ?
Try a BT56 Bridgestone 180/55 @ 41psi . although its now been updated to a BT010 , i haven't tryed them yet but the write ups have been good in the press . both these tyres are quite sticky , so they may not last to long , about 5000 miles with mixed riding ( giving it a handful most of the time ). atb Nick T
Re: Starting problem
Hi Hugh, it's probobly the side stand switch is faulty , the bike still thinks it's down hence the engine will not start/turn . had the same problem on my bike. atb Nick T
Parts??
Does any one know where the on line parts micro fiche is located ( web address ). Thanks in advance atb Nick T
Re: Starting problem
If the bikes in neutral, the bike takes no notice of the side stand switch because you can't pull away. Its only when in gear that it needs to know the side stand is up. atb Nick T
Re: Starting problem
If you want to check the switch , the connection is behind the front sprocket casing , i can't remember which way the connection works , but first try it with the two wires disconnected ( Remember to replace the casing or the clutch push rod will shoot out and loads of oil to ) does it start? Then connect the two wires together does it start? If theres only one wire disconnect it does it start? if no then short it to earth ( engine casing ). I'am sorry the way to check it , is a bit vague but mine went wrong along time ago. atb Nick T
Re: Brakes taking in air
On my GTS i had a problem ,the brakes seemed to take in air, the lever would pull right back to the bar . If i bled the brake, one or two weeks later the lever would be soft again . The cause was worn caliper seals which would grab the pistons when the brake was applied and pull them further back into the caliper body , which would then mean the lever had to be pulled back further before the pads would contact the disc , felt like air in the system. My old seals looked ok , but when i changed them the brake was back to normal . atb Nick T
Camcorder mounting
Can any one tell me the best place to mount a camcorder on my GTS that isn't affected by to much vibration. thanks nick t
