Take the rack back off check to see if the problem still exists. If so
check the condition of your tires...front and back. Cupped and/or wornout
tires tend to produce tank slapping at deceleration. Now if your problem
occurs at acceleration as well I would blame the rack or bad installation.
Go get you some Krausers or a Bushtec trailer and forget about this rack.

The O2 sensor of course, which is mounted onto the catalytic converter
(you'll see it if you look close under the bike) helps the ECU adjusts for
the appropriate fuel mixture. The bike won't run right if that bugger's bad.
Lets get the TPS and if that doesn't do it we'll explore various other

last time I check my cats, they had no electronics sticking out of them.
What
are you talking about? Bottom line - the sensor is on order and is due
to
arrive. The sensor when adjusted would give the discontinuity error - I
check
the continuity of the power supply and the return and they were good. So,
when
the TPS arrives, I'm going to give it a shot to see if it clears up the
problem
 - I've tested the bike every way I know how (on and off) for a couple of

now and am getting no closer to the cause.

First off, I'm absolutely not questioning your readings George - but I
find it
really odd that the only chart in the service manual that indicates
voltages for
the TPS shows at full closed, the TPS should give 0 volts (?)... at 45% -
2
volts, at full open (125%) - 5 volts - linear results. This chart show
nothing
about RPM. This chart is on page II-12.

Sven the rest of the GTSers, here's the differences in part numbers
when
opening both the 93 and 94 ECU boxes to compare parts (i.e E-Prom). Whom

  enlighten.

  93 ECU
  112100-0040
  12V TBDF03 D
ND MG2530 (ND=DENSO the ECU manufacturer I assume)
  1N11B

  94 ECU
  112100-0050
  12V TBDF04 E
  D MG3840 (don't know which manufacturer D is)
  1R09B

And now for the TPS voltage measurements at the 6 different RPMs between
which the dreaded surging occurs (BTW Sven your measured values are too
high). The ECU pots were all set at the 1:00 o'clock position and TPS
was
set close to the full clockwise setting. I will next try a different TPS
setting (I expect the voltage values to be different (lower) but the
voltage
delta between the 6 different RPMs to be approx. the same).

  93 ECU
  0.811v @ 800RPM
  0.863v @ 1,000RPM
  0.898v @ 2,000RPM
  0.916v @ 3,000RPM
  0.957v @ 4,000RPM
  0.986v @ 5,000RPM

  94 ECU
  0.815v @ 800RPM
  0.867v @ 1,000RPM
  0.925v @ 2,000RPM
  0.940v @ 3,000RPM
  0.982v @ 4,000RPM
  1.000v @ 5,000RPM

After physically testing both ECUs on my bike I can say that the mileage
  drops when using the 94 ECU by about 3-4MPG (93 ECU=40-43MPG, 94
ECU=37-40
max). And now for the seat-of-the-pants part of the test. The surging
behavior I estimate to be about the same or maybe a tad bit less with
the 94
but not worth the MPG penalty. The testing continues RSR...

Re: Medic !!!!

It seems that there really are two RPM ranges @ which most GTSs surge,
around 2,500 RPM around 4,500RPM. I can just about adjust the surge out of
one of two ranges but not both. Glad to hear Fred that your adjustment has
been successful, my next step is to balance the FI with gaugesif only
time was abundantly available.

This weekend I experimented with the TPS. I first put it on 0.625 V and
put
the ECU pots at 1 o'clock. The bike surged now not at low RPM's any more
but
a little at 3-400 RPM. Not a problem but I wanted better. Now I put the
TPS
at 0,644 and the surging is now completly gone. I just did a riding course
and no surging at all. I also made a pemanent vacuumconnection. The hoses
end above the airfilter so I don't have to remove the tank anymore to
 synchronise.

 Fred Schneider

I think he turned the TPS the wrong direction. George and I found if you
followed the instructions from Robert Wilson's site, the bike is almost
unridable. Rotating the TPS counter clockwise improves the low RPM
surge.
 If
you are in question, crank it all the counter clock wise, or anti clock
 wise
if you are in Europe, and see if it rides better.

OK Sven I did read up and on page II-94 Yamaha gives you the sensor values
at full open and closed positions...only the values are in ohms not volts
(and don't forget to turn the bike off and remove the connector). Did you do
this measurements when checking your old TPS? As for the graph on II-12 I
don't even know if that's of any use, can't even read the damn values.
Yamaha ought to be ashamed with the graphical condition of this hea so
called technical manual.

Also, did you check the sensor coming out the cat before you ordered the
TPS? It could also be a culprit.

That's all for now.

Re: ECU Failure (was Atlanta)

2000-07-26 Thread paramithas

Steve, you are welcome to come up to my place but my weekends are next to
impossible 'till August 27, since I will be out of town for the most part of
August. I still think you ought to call me some evening this week, we may
be able to isolate the problem over the phone. Your condition very much
sounds
like you may be activating via faulty electronics and/or other intermittent
failure your GTS's rev limiter. So, make sure it's not a wiring
harness/connector that's causing the break down and further look into the
rev
limiter's operation in the manual (and corresponding ECU failure codes).
Secondly, measure at the TPS the voltages at different RPMs (digital
voltmeter
and a needle at the top of the connector does the job), it's a very straight
forward thing to record voltage values @ different RPMs for comparison. BTW
have
you set the ECU pots to the 1:00 o' clock position? This would be a good
starting point for your measurements if we were to compare readings.
Thirdly,
remove the IPS sensor from the air box make sure it works properly. If
this
thing is an airflow sensor and I've never done this so I am just guessing,
you
can create a stationary test set by using a fan, hair dryer or what ever
else to try and simulate
as close to real life conditions as possible. I assume you can at least
measure the IPS's
changing resistance and voltage output, (it's nothing more than a
transducer, may even be replaceable
with a variable resistor for testing purposes after you've established
max/min values). BTW you could
also connect your volt meter leads semi-permanently to the IPS and ride the
GTS like that 'till you
isolate the failure condition. Also, check both sensor connectors/wires for
burned marks or broken wire strands
within their insulation, your failure may be related to heat causing an
imperfect component
to fail. I would not recommend you replacing the ECU or the sensors yet
since
the failure may not be passive thus inducing the same failure to the new
parts
due to high voltage, reverse polarity, etc. You may even want to go looking
into
the ECU since it can very well be a partially seated component on the PC
board (the intermittence of your condition points to such failure). Has
anyone out
there opened the ECU box for more precise guidance for doing this?

One last thing and I know this sounds simplistic but for the record check
your battery for soundability and for tight connections, including your
voltage
regulator to make sure it's not overjuicing the system. Not much else I can
think off right now.

George scratching his back side

I rode them both, the K1200RS I would say is lighter, much smoother

prise.

Roberto at 130mph you had about 20mph more to go, you blinked that's why you

The BMW should have the edge in 1/4 mile and top speed although it is
close.
The GTS and BMW weigh almost the same but the BMW has about a 20 rwhp
advantage. I have seen published figures as low as 11.3 for the 1/4 for
the
K12. IN MOTO (an Italian magazine) had figures of 11.4 (400 meters) and
152
mph for the K12 and 11.8 and 141 for the GTS. In the real world though the
 difference is probably hardly noticeable.

sat on a few and had to awakened after a few minutes. Now that what I
call comfort. There were six thousand bikes at the BMW moa , and three
1993 GTS models., and one 1994 . My 1994 has color matched Krausers, and
it drew a crowd . Many questions, and the comment that now that sounds
like a motorcycle at idle. The new BMW bikes sound remarkably like giant
two wheeled sewing machines at idle. Does anyone know if the K1200 is
faster than a GTS ?? I know they claim a top end of 152 on the K bike,
but the quarter mile times were the same as a GTS , in the 11.70'S .
K-1200'S have a six speed , so top end is not a fair comparison. I have
pushed my GTS to about 140 down Big Bend Texas way with the bags back at
the campground. I think it would have gone a bit faster, but I did not
want to push my luck on a then new bike. Anyone have any top end
figures?? Several K bike types had inquiring minds and wanted to know.
For a 94 model bike to still have that much interest tells me we are

It makes a lot of sense if you are an insurance company and you have the

know that riders are no greater a risk so they will be glad to have us

Also, found out today that Blue Cross Blue Shield is THE ONLY insurance

Good subject I am interested in obtaining bike to bike
communicators,
possibly with rider passenger intercom feature and even walkman
connections.
Anyone have any favorites? I heard from a shop I help at that the Chatter
Box
is not a quality piece. The parts department feels they get most of them
returned, because they either never worked, or, do not have a reasonable
range, which, seems to be line of sight. I have talked to other riders
that
say the later models of Chatter Box are much improved. Anyone
 Thanks,

Re: copyright/here George goes again

2000-06-10 Thread paramithas

Timothy, having done copyright work in the past, and as explained to me by a
lawyer, the copying of copyrighted material is not illegal as long as it is
not done for profit. For example if I make my own riding video and as
background music I use a song from a CD I have purchased I am cool as long
as this video is used for non-profit, and can show it or give it to friends
with no legal ramifications. I believe intent to profit is the key here.

Sorry, I have to chime in. Seems to be some confusion between Patents and
copyright. Patents are in existence to encourage public disclosure of new
technology. The Government will give you a period of exclusivity (20
years)
in exchange for public disclosure of how exactly the technology works. If
Coke was patented instead of a trade secret the patent would have expired
long ago and anyone could make a drink with the exact recipe.

Copyrights on the other hand last a very long time (life of the author +
50
years, or if for works made for hire, 50 years from first publication or
100 years from creation, whichever is shorter) It is given to the author
of
any original work or expression. Further you can register your copyright
which give you the ability to recover monetary damages. A copyright exists
immediately upon production of any original work. Without registering it
you can not recover monetary damages but you can have a court order anyone
 infringing your copyright to stop.

Now the concept of fair use come in, if I buy a copyrighted product but
want to make a copy for myself to safeguard the original, that is within
my
rights. If I wish to give a select few pages to another person, That is
also within my rights so long as the portion I am distributing is a small
subset of the original work. The concept is to protect the work from
someone else copying or commercially using it.

Re: Easiest Way To Change Air Filters

2000-05-28 Thread paramithas

Mike,
The only way that I know off to safely replace air filters is to take both
side of the engine plastic off, including top and bottom. It sounds like a
big task but after you've done it once you'll be able to do it blind folded
in 5 minutes. Just be careful to remove all the screws so as not to crack or
break the plastic. There's a gas vent hose on "gray glove compartment" you
have to disconnect in order to remove it, it will become obvious once you do
it.

After you've removed the plastic body parts you will see the top of the
airbox (black square looking thing). It is held down with 10-12 Philips head
screws. Remove those, pull the top off and you will see the two filters
which you will change out. I've replaced mine with individual KNs, they
work great and there's no need for that huge air box occupying all that
space.

While there, change your spark plugs, they should be replaced once a year
for good measure, even though mine looked brand spanking new after a year's
use. The whole task should not take more then one hour.

Hope this helps you

Also, how long should a set of quality spark plugs last? (I'm preparing

Falling in love.....

2000-03-29 Thread George Paramithas

.all over again, and no this is no fluff about my personal life so,
here's the story. Last weekend I had the pleasure of taking a 2 day ride
down to LA (Lower Alabama :-)) for a beemer gathering. My neighbor just
bought a BMW 1200 RS, their flagship when it comes to sport
riding/speed. I must say that after playing with it a while I was very
impressed with its smoothens of ride. Numb nuts me finally felt like a
smooth operator, the best part of the experience. Also, the gear box was
precise and the power delivery very smooth and deliberate, but there
still seemed to be a slight surge due to the EFI, I guess that's the
nature of this hea beast. The 130 ponies didn't hurt me none either so,
135 came and went a few times bringing all sorts of emotions to my
lonely heart. All in all it was a great experience for about an hour,
the RS was a great bike but I was glad to get my GTS back.

Ah here you is my trusty baby. I think I'll keep ya a while longer
since you fit so well and I can still do things with you I can do with
no other. Now how can I tickle your gear box, give you a few extra

Glad to see you back on the list Joerg. And as an honor to your previous
effort, I must say that the 46L Krausers you got for me worked very-very-very
well, especially when solo riding, I didn't know they were back there and with
plenty of interior room to spare.

Jim, brake fluid deteriorates quickly due to its water attraction and/or

do.

Anybody have any ideas what caused this discoloration?

supposed to be bad? What about them selling defective products! I didn't see
defects in our money when they accepted them.

I say Bull Shit...this is not a linked abs system. it never did this before

This is shit guys gal...if you can tell I'm pissed your right. I've been

 stuff really gets my goat.

 Here's what I need:

Those people with the new HU's..please go try this test for usfind some
slight gravel, lock up the brakes (both) to confirm your abs works...careful
more back than front here) Then try just your back brakes...to see if the
pulse or lock up. Keep in mind Yamaha is saying the rear wheel is
"supposed" to lock up if only the rear brake is appliedI think this is
 crap

Maxine, I've been doing some testing of my own on this surging problem and I also
have experienced the higher RPM surging with a 94 ECU in place of my original 93
so, changing an ECU is not a cure all, as a matter of fact I think my original
ECU was better behaved. How much surging are you getting with your bike (if you
can at all quantify it) and have you tried adjusting for minimizing this
abnormality? Maybe your 10% reduction is due to Yamaha's adjustment. If
interested I can send you my complete log of what I have done so far and believe
me I ain't though yet!

Re: About the MCN letter ABS

1999-12-21 Thread George Paramithas

Yamaha lawyer: "Uh, no. We'll repair the ABS units voluntarily."
NHTSA lawyer: "Thank you, have a nice day."

Would you like a cappuccino while we are working on your brakes Yamaha asks. If
this is not simplistic I don't know what is. No conditions, no compromises, no
give and take right? Even if they do repair once what happens the next time? What
will the next person we sell our GTS to do? Or are we all going to agree to
retire our GTSs for trying to save lives. Yea that's it.

If someone wants a lawyer, just lock up a brake and crash. Then you'll easily
find one who wants to sue Yamaha Big Time. By pursuing this the way we're
doing it, we may save Yamaha millions and maybe someone's life. I don't think
asking them to fix my brakes is such a selfish idea here.

 -Jay

Yea right, I am sure we are doing this to save Yamaha $ and other's lives!! I am
sure we would be mobilizing if the part cost $20 instead of $2,000. I was once
stopped by a cop and given a ticket for not wearing my seat beltI have an
inherent antipathy to such measures but that's another story. Any way, with a
pompous attitude his words to me were "I am trying to save your life" So I
snapped back "I don't see you wearing a seat belt". He was a motorcycle cop! You
should have seen that pissy face of his.

Please don't take this e-mail personal guys, it's not meant to be.

Re: bulb comparison/FYI

1999-12-19 Thread George Paramithas

I have been using OEM but a step up from stock (85/120W) on both my bikes. Much
more light output in front of the handle bars and bulb only costs $13. Now will
the higher wattage damage the sockets? Only time will tell but my mind tells me
NOT, especially if high beam low beam is alternated frequently during long
trips.

George says let there be light

PS. Merry Christmass to all my fellow listers, including the ones I don't like,
it's up to you to figure out who you are :-)

Alan Tooraen wrote:

Dave, this is my response to the test. From day one I have told people
that I only sell Piaa bulbs because a lot of people ask for them . I
have never sold the 85 watt variant that was tested in this test, but I
can say that bikes equipped with the Piaa bulbs can be seen much better
in the daylight because of the temperature of the light ( Piaa=3800
degrees kelvin vs 3200 degrees kelvin for standard bulbs). Since Stanley
bulbs were not tested , and several of them do not have any coating or
tint at all , I still firmly stand behind my assertion that they are
superior to stock bulbs in every way except life expectancy. I think
after reading this report I will stop selling Piaa bulbs . I currently
use Stanley's in all my bikes and vehicles. Several other riders on the
list that are use Stanley's will tell you the same thing about their
performance compared to the stock GTS bulbs.

Re: ABS issue - George says...

1999-12-18 Thread George Paramithas

..I am sorry for not participating in this ABS issue but believe me I have
been very-very-very busy, hell I haven't even been ridding and that's a life
requirement!! Before I go on I must say that due to good friends and fortune,
Yamaha has been very good to both my RS and GTS. But since I am a member of
this list you can add me to the ABS failures, lets say by proxy, since my
hydraulic unit was also replaced but under warranty and prior to my purchasing
the bike. Don't know if my thoughts will be useful but if I was the Cahoona of
this list I would approach the ABS problem in the following manner.
1) I would make us an official club with bi-laws, elected officers and the
like. Why? This will give us credence as a united and formidable group. It will
also give Yamaha a focussed reference point to respond to.
2) I would write another letter (Yami did leave the door open in their response
to us and BTW Hawk-man I believe you are reading what you expected and not what
Yamaha really said since their answer was diplomatic as it should have been),
short, concise and to the point. I.e. "what we request is not unreasonable so
please help us out or else we have been authorized by our club members to go
public and legally proceed if that becomes necessary. We sincerely hope it does
not". The finer details of what constitutes failure, risk, normal tear and wear
are for the shysters to figure out and no pun intended here for the latest
version of the letter, it was well written but was also wordy. And when I say
go public I mean cycle mags, mobilization of media outlets i.e radio, TV
coverage in front of Yamaha dealers and picketing, not only NHTSA MCN . I
know that's a bit much but if we are not so much committed to the cause why
should Yami step up to the plate? Also, report our problem to the BBB of each
and every city we live in, create so much bad press that it would be counter
productive for them not to settle, and that's the bottom line.
3) I would collect signatures and a monitory commitment from all that are
willing to participate in legal proceedings if that becomes necessary. It's
either step to the plate or go away folks!
4) I would not reveal my cards to Yamaha via rambling ons on this list since it
can easily be monitored by Big Brother (I know for a fact our Royal Star list
is thoroughly sanitized by Yami doods) which means Yamaha already knows our
quandary, confusion and future moves. That's why we must elect a prez and a VP
to represent our club and leave it up to them to do the job. Any input that may
be required by members can be had via private e-mails, if there is such thing,
or phone calls.
5) I know it's a good chunk of money to have to spend on a new HU but after all
the laws of physics are the laws of physics, even for almighty Yamaha.
Therefore lets be reasonable, don't expect Yamaha to keep paying for ever 100%
of all out of warranty failures. There's consumer protection laws out there
that make provisions for arbitration (input needed here from our friendly GTS
attorney members), but we first have to determine what's fair for both parties.

It's 6:30 am, the java has run out and so have my opinions. It's back to laying
hard wood floors for me and a back breaking job it is. Let me see can I ask God
to replace my 44 year old lower back free of charge? Will he even bother
sending me a rejection letter? Who can I get to arbitrate my cause, my namesake
maybe?

Warning on AMSOIL filters

1999-12-10 Thread George Paramithas

As you all know I am a happy user of Amsoil products and a rep. I've used their
filters on both my Volvo and Audi but never on my motorcycles. All I can say
about their auto filters is that they do not have the exact size replacements
which makes them harder to put on and off plus on my Volvo, the filter
deteriorated prematurely since it did not hold pressure overnight. How do I
know? The oil light would stay on more time than normal plus when I removed it
on the last oil change there was no liquid in it. Could it be a aberration?
Possibly but I've never had this aberration happen with OEM products. Can Amsoil
be cutting corners to increase profit? I sincerely hope not because I would hate
to have to second guess their oil quality.

George Prometheus has provided all he knows on this subject

"Henry S. Winokur" wrote:

As for the oil filter, you can use the SDF-13, SDF-20 and SDF-36. The
SDF-13 is an exact replacement. The SDF-20 is slightly wider and larger,
and is designed for late model Acura Integras and Honda Civics
  and accords.
The SDF-36 is like the -20, except slightly longer.

 Jon:

Thanks for all your work on this. Have you checked your local Trac Auto for
an oil filter wrench? I found an endcap type at my Trac for the Yamaha
filter which I assume is equal to the SDF 13. One thing I had to do was
open boxes, because the display had nothing to do with what was on the
 shelf.

My rear brake is pretty useless also, since my ABS is trigger happy at the back.

"Hawkins, Kevin L, SITS" wrote:

Really? The rear brake on my GTS is VERY strong. In fact it is the most
effective rear brake I've experienced on any bike I've owned! Excellent
feel, excellent power. The difference might be the pads. I'm using EBC black

remember how the OEM back pads felt years ago, although the OEM front pads
were very good! The only problem I saw with the front pads was that they
were semi-metallic which seemed to wear the rotors a bit. The EBC blacks are
 simple organic pads.

A few thoughts on ABS repairs. If anyone has experience enlighten us.

Since one the ABS fails there is no way to cycle the fluid - the longer it
sits after failure the worse it'll be to fix cause corrosion will continue.

I once drug a SOHC 750 four honda out of gross disuse resurrected it. The
engine was fine but there was corrosion in the front caliper. The pistons
(steel) could be cleaned brought back but the aluminum calipers were
pitted. I honed then got it all to work but the pistons were sloppier
than I liked. (I was still young enough to be immortal). For anyone who's
done one - was there any pitting in the HCU?

Which brings up one more point. Anyone who's HCU has failed probably ought
to take a look at the caliper bores also. From personal experience, when
brakes fail, they fail ON - think brake pad smoke - but if you can clean off
the pistons prevent further damage it's time well spent. Would be very
simple compared to the HCU. I'm guessing Yamaha used steel pistons, I
haven't had mine apart yet. (Xmas-NY week vacation)

Re: Supertrapp Exhaust

1999-11-11 Thread George Paramithas

Thomas, don't know about the Supertrapp exhaust specifically but the oxygen
sensor re-installation has been done before and is a simple procedure. Drill and
tap or weld onto the new hardware making sure you remount the oxygen sensor in
the same proximity as the original location.

As for performance, the jury's out on this one. With that I mean there's more to
performance than sheer speed i.e. the larger headers seem to make the bike less
jerky but you get a flat spot at about 4K rpm. Stan has a point though about the
VH, it looks cool but not much of a performer.

spend $10k+ on a bike you're only going to ride 600 miles a year? I've seen
several gold wings averaging under 1K a year. Two of the guys I reide with
have new wings, one with 730 miles, one with 14,000 miles - both new this

Hooters has bike night around here. typically get 125-150 bikes, almost all

The motorcycle really isn't for riding for many of the guys (yes, I

 HTTP://www.vjmc.org/greg/oct_event.htm#9 for some additional info.
In fact, how many GTSers are interested in attending the show and meeting
up? Saturday works out better for me. On Sunday, there is an HSTA meet in
Idywild, another really sweet ride up the local mountains near L.A. John (and
anyone else), you're welcome to attend that and meet a friendly bunch of

And John, if those events don't give you enough riding around, there is
the well known Angeles Crest and many nearby roads. Look for Highway 2 on
your map and any off-shoot that looks interesting on paper is. Mulholland is
another famous one, but is better for smaller bikes and in my book isn't as
 much fun.
