RE: GTS weight and comments
For what it is worth... I have 3 GIVI bags which I use on my GTS. I've had all three bags loaded (both sides with 30 lbs. and a top bag loaded with approx. 50 lbs) when I have been doing 142 mph.. when I was passing Bob Johnson in Utah.. The bags stick Regards, Digital Foot.. I do not recall seeing any speed warning in the manual either. My BMW R100GS , and a former R1100RS had warnings on the bags as well as in the manual about bags and speed. At above 85mph or above my R100GS starts to develop a rear end weave that is very unnerving with the factory bags. Thank you for the correction. Regards, Alan Tooraen

While the roads are bumpy, one of the advantages of riding around here is that speed limits are never enforced. I've been stopped at police checkpoints for a document check, but never for speeding. The speed limit here is 100kph; BMW's recommended max for its saddle bags is 85mph. Alan says: "The GTS is also one of the only bikes that does not have a speed warning attached to the luggage. " Well, my 46 litre Oz Krausers (with Yamaha label on outside) have a warning stuck on inside, in several languages, saying that the bike should not be ridden over 80 mph or 130 kph with the "accessories" (ie bags) fitted Mind you, I haven't obeyed this warning and have suffered no consequences!! Re: GTS weight and comments
Alan from personal experience I can tell you it AIN't the weight. Just got back from visiting friends in Virginia, came west then north through western VA, eastern central KY. My GTS used to be absolutely rock stable, any speed, any truck passing, any cross winds. Never more than a slight push. I just installed the clearview +5 I got from Paul I've got some wear on a set of BT57's. It's twitchy as hell now. You absolutely do not pass a truck in a turn, nor let one pass you, even on the slab. The gusty winds today cut my cornering speed 15-20MPH cause I can't hold a line through a turn if the wind changed. Dropped 2 PSI front, 3 PSI back which helped some. I'm going to put the stock windscreen back on to verify but I'm pretty sure the tires are a major contributor. I seemed to me they were getting so they went off center more quickly as they wore. Anybody else had this experience with 57's? Re: GTS weight and comments
I happen to have a GS1150 in addition to the GTS had the left factory saddlebag on the BMW blow off the bike last March. I was travelling on a bumpy highway (most are bumpy around here), riding behind a friend on an R1 at speeds well above the recommended maximum. I didn't realize the bag was missing until I arrived home with my lopsided bike. Despite efforts to repeat this with my replacement bag, I've managed to hang on to it thus far. Alan: Good points that I also agree with...and that reminds me of my earlier trip to Chicago where I came up behind a late model ST1100. I was amazed at how much the ST swerved in the truck blast...and the bags shaking like they were going to drop off in front of meWe have a very neat bike folks...not much can touch it. Shawn P
Re: GTS weight and comments
Shawn, have you ever tried to attach or remove St1100 luggage?? It is a handful compared to a GTS. St luggage also moves more than James Brown , and is very limited in capacity. I think the GTS factory luggage is the best to ever be put on a motorbike. It may not look as aesthetically pleasing as some, but when it comes to being stable, hauling the freight, staying dry, and being easy to attach and remove, it is without peer. I wish Krauser had color matched the bags to the GTS, but other than that , I do not see how they could have improved upon them. The GTS is also one of the only bikes that does not have a speed warning attached to the luggage. The bike was originally tested with the 46 liter bags , and ran 134 mph with luggage attached. Many BMW bikes warn you not to go over 80-100 with the bags attached because of turbulence that causes a weave at high speeds. It is safe to say that the engineers did their homework when they produced the GTS. Sincerely, Alan Tooraen
