Last time I used OSEM, it wasn't as straight forward to use as I would
have hoped.
Maybe it makes sense to take it for a trial run for LAS and then see if
it makes sense to recommend it for the other conferences?
Is the signup system in OSEM (and/or Pentabaf) very, how do I say it,
concerned about itself? In the sense that it's overly formal, academic
and complicated?

Dear Andreas, Dear Oliver,

tomorrow we have our booth planing for the next months. I was wondering
if there is a possibility to have small booths at GUADEC in Karlsruhe
this year? Then we would try to find volunteers to take care of that.

Hey,

We are now at a point where we should soon finalize the venue booking.
And while I am not totally set on it, I am actually thinking of staying
with 3 core days for next year at least. The main reason for this are:
  * more time for social events/hallway track
  * we just moved down to 3 from 4 days last year
  * I am not a fan of e.g. cutting the intern lightning talks
(in the very least it is a good learning experience)

While I would feel it might be OK to cut the interns lightning talk,
there are other things like the AGM, group photo, lightning talks etc.
that would get rushed with a 2 days only program.

Hence I support the idea of three core days.

fun, and I love giving them, but I can't fit everything in 5 minutes.
But 45 minutes for that would drag.

You could do it so that the short presentations are a single track,
and then the longer talks are multi-tracked.

I've added a sketch to the etherpad [1] - you could have 12 longer
talks and either 8 or 16 short ones, depending on whether you go
multi-track for those or not.

20 minutes talks could work, but I don't understand the motivation for
keeping those in a single track only.
You'll end up with only 20 talks for the entire conference. [1] Making
the 20-minute slots multi-track would grow that number to 28.

1. This working on the premise that we either cut the lightning talks or
the interns lightning talks + team presentations. If not, we're talking
14 talks total or so...

[guadec-list] Wifi status for the venue

2015-07-22 Thread Andreas Nilsson

A quick update about the wifi status at the venue.

I called the IT person at Folkets Hus yesterday and asked about the
capabilities of the network, since our contact in charge of the booking
said that there might be some limitations to the network, but was
uncertain about the details.
The IT guy said that the wifi network should handle up to 300 units at
the same time, and that every device gets a cap for 54 Mbits. The entire
internet connection is 1 Gbps both up and down.
There is 2-3 ethernet jacks in every room, so speakers should be able to
connect directly to those (I'll bring my USB ethernet dongles). There is
also no particular restriction on the ethernet ports, so it's entirely
possible for us to bring extra routers and set up a backup network in
case the load on the venue's wifi gets to intense.

I think it's ready to go live later today.

[guadec-list] IRC meeting this Thursday?

2015-06-08 Thread Andreas Nilsson

Hi!
It would be good to have another IRC meeting so everyone can sync up
what everyone is up to and if there are any gaps in the organization
plans that we need to patch up.

How about Thursday this week? 16:00-17:00 UTC?
Speak up if you really can't do it and I'll try and reschedule.

Hello Michael!
If you're a (future) application developer, I think it would be a great
opportunity to learn more about GNOME Technologies at the conference,
and during the hackfests that follows.
There is also a lot of non-programming talks on design, outreach,
documentation etc.
To get a feel of the kinds of talks that make up the conference, you can

I still haven't heard from the organziers on the signing authority for

The board OKed the contract with FFKP just the other day. Sent the

I'll put the dates for the BOFs/Hackfests (Aug 10-12) on the website.

[guadec-list] Meetings next week

2015-04-26 Thread Andreas Nilsson

Hi!
Again, sorry for the mixup on Wednesday. Lets try again and see if we
can make this work.
My suggestion is to have a local, face to face meeting at Tuesday 18.00
Local time (16:00 UTC). At Condecco around Domkyrkan.
There is a number of smaller tasks and high bandwidth discussions, such
as keynote speakers that needs to be handled at that meeting.

Then we can have a IRC meeting in #guadec on Wednesday 19.00 local
time/17.00 UTC. This is because some people from the board wanted to
participate. This would also allow for people who are not based in
Gothenburg to participate.

Sounds good?

hours, etc?)?

Ah, yes, I can see how that is a bit confusing.
The location we first looked at was the Chalmers conference halls, but
as noted, the price was quite a bit too much for our budget.
Smaller class rooms are easier to come by on Chalmers though, so that's
why Kalev looked into that (without success).
Chalmers IT University is a cooperation project between Chalmers
Technical University and University of Gothenburg and they are somewhat
a separate organization that have buildings at another place in town.

If you're able to get in touch with your contact that would be wonderful!
We're having a local meeting tonight, so Oliver and Christopher will be
able to tell the status of their searches (so maybe best to wait until
tomorrow to reach out).

The requirements would be:
* August 10-11-12
* About 8 hours a day. Starting around 9, 10, ending about 5, 6, 7 in
the night.

* As many rooms as we can get. What do we usually have? 10?
* Network connectivity. We have some routers and cabling that we can use
if it's somewhere with bad wifi, but good ethernet jacks.

Thank you so much for the help!

[guadec-list] minutes from local GUADEC 2015 meeting 141014

2014-10-21 Thread Andreas Nilsson

Hi everyone!
The local GUADEC 2015 team had a small meeting on the 14th.
These are the notes:

GUADEC 2015 - Local Meeting 2014-10-14

= Participants =

Kalev

Fabiana

Andreas S

Andreas N

= Agenda =

* Venue

* Sponsorships

* Website

* Volunteers

* Speakers

* Next steps

= Venue =

* Andreas N spoke to Leif-Göran about Humanisten. This was our initial
proposal for a venue, but had been discarded due to renovations.

* Leif-Göran mentioned the renovations might have been postponed, so
that we might be able to host GUADEC there during the summer.

* Leif-Göran will confirm this information with the university. He’ll
have a preliminary answer on November, and a definitive one in December.

* Our alternatives for a venue are:

* Gamlestans medborgarhus - Rent for 3 days at ~13000 SEK

* Frilagret + Folkets Hus - Rent for Folkets Hus for 3 days at ~15000
SEK + tax. ACTION: Andreas S will try and book a visit there.

* Chalmers Technical University - The regular rent for Chalmers is
really high and out of questions for GUADEC. However, Kalev has a
contact there who might be able to lend us the halls for free. ACTION:
Kalev will try to get in touch with them next week.

= Sponsorships =

* Fabiana and Andreas have written a draft of the brochure to be sent to
the Board.

* Question: Do we we need the text in Swedish as well for local
sponsors? It might be a good idea for reaching out to sponsors with
local interest, such as Unionen.

* We need to tweak the text to mention we’re a non-profit first off.

* We need to start a list of potential sponsors in the GNOME wiki.
ACTION: Andreas N to create initial page.

* We already have a potential small sponsor (688 USD).

* Having a study circle format for our meetings allows us to get some
sponsorship from the local government. ACTION: Andreas S to ask Stian
about how this is done for FSCONS.

* Oliver started an application for support from regional government.
ACTION: Andreas N and Andreas S to review the application.

* There are a few people who might help us find sponsors:

* Jasmine Lyman - ACTION: Andreas N to contact

* Tech groups at Chalmers - ACTION: Kalev to contact

= Website =

* We need something basic up as soon as possible, with details on
location and sponsorship.

* Conference management software has been a struggle in past GUADECs.

* FSCONS uses frab, a replacement of Pentabarf which has been tested for
GUADEC before. ACTION: Andreas S will get more information about the
system from Gregoir once FSCONS is over.

* Patrick Uijterwijk from GNOME told Andreas N he's working on a system
as well. ACTION: Andreas N to reach out to Patrick about this with
Kalev, who’s interested in keeping tabs on this, on cc.

* We need to offer at least one payment method in addition to PayPal.

= Volunteers =

* We need to expand our team of volunteers for our next steps

* How many volunteers do we need?

* GNOME Wiki says 1 coordinator, 5 highly involved and 10 committed. The
wiki also has clear areas needing volunteer leadership-

* ACTION: As we move things to the wiki, assign yourself to areas of
your interest.

= Speakers =

* We brainstormed some potential local speakers in the area (keynote and
others):

* Jeremiah Foster from Debian and Genivi

* Smári McCarthy (Iceland) from Mailpile

* Jasmine Lyman from Collaboratory

* Henrik Sandklef from GNU and the IT University

* Jonas Öberg from Commons Machinery (Creative Commons)

* There is a list of suggestions on Google Drive already. ACTION:
Fabiana to move this list from Google Drive to the GNOME Wiki.

* In order to explore the local FOSS community, we’d like to focus on
having local speakers (from Sweden, expanding to Scandinavia). As a side
effect, we’d also save money on flights.

= Next steps =

* Action items from this meeting

* Start structuring a proper budget document. ACTION: Andreas N to reach
out to Alexandre for help and reference from GUADEC 2014.

* January: open call for papers, decide on the format of the conference,
put together travel and accommodation details.

* The goal is to have the conference between late July and early August.
If we’re short on sponsors though, we can push it to June or September.

* Fabiana is away for work from May 28 to June 4

* Swedish midsummer holiday is on June 19 and 20

* We should meet again in two weeks.

= Action items =

* Andreas S will try and book a visit to Folkets Hus.

* Andreas S to ask Stian how study groups are set up for FSCONS.

* Andreas S to ask Gregoir about frab once FSCONS is over.

* Andreas N to create a page in the wiki for potential sponsors

* Andreas N to reach out to Patrick about a GNOME conference management
system.

* Andreas N to reach out to Alexandre for help with budget tracking

* Andreas N to contact Jasmine Lyman from Collaboratory about sponsors

* Andreas N and Andreas S to review Oliver’s application for the
regional government.

* Kalev will

[guadec-list] Registration form, next steps

2014-06-13 Thread Andreas Nilsson

Hi!

I've done the layout of the registration form as a draft
https://www.guadec.org/?page_id=1323

However, as you all know, I'm about the least skilled person in the
GNOME community when it comes to programming, so I would need some help
with those bits.
If anyone is skilled in php etc. that would be able to help that would
be awesome.

The second thing is that we need payment methods. Both via bank and
paypal. I have no idea how that stuff works. I spoke to Fabiana about
it, and she says this is also above her league (due to the payment part).

Another option would be to go with something like Event Expresso
http://eventespresso.com/ that takes care of most of what we need.

not getting the nice color :)

BTW we're planning to order around 40 red t-shirts for organizers and

Red is a excellent idea. Easy to spot from afar and I think we've used

So one question that have been floating around in my head the last

Do the proposed keynote speakers map directly to the topics, or is the

The list below is copypaste from guadec.org:

 * Design of the core user experience (core applications, shell, toolkit)
 * Design of the developer experience (tools, documentation, services)
 * Integration and extension of the operating system plumbings into the
   core UX
 * Application development and deployment
 * Integration of web technologies into the GNOME user experience
 * Improving the user experience on different form factors
 * Outreach to new contributors

[guadec-list] Fwd: Re: guadec-web git module maintainership

2013-01-13 Thread Andreas Nilsson

Hi GUADEC team!
I got a approval from Sense to take over the maintainership of the
guadec-web modue in GNOME git.
The current guadec.org is not hosted specifically in git, but on the
machine directly (currently forgot what one, but Andrea Veri knows this).
My current plan is to put the GUADEC Hague website and put that in a
branch, and then move the current content of guadec.org into git.

Hello,

Sorry for the late reply, I was busy.

I do not care what you do with the 'guadec-web' branch. Please do
whatever it is you need to do with it; change the content, change the
maintainer.

Good luck with organising!

We're about to set up the GUADEC 2013 website and have a question about

Is it ok if we put the current content in a branch and do new stuff on

Nice stuff, great use of the skyline!

Some quick thoughts below, no real need to take action on them,
especially if it make you mess a deadline.
* There is some unnecessary intention between the sections. Have trust
in the fact that text size get the hierarchy and importance of the
sections right already.
* The GNOME foot in the background, while nice that it exposures to our
project logo, gives a messy impression compared to the guadec.org website.

* The red color signals Warning and looks odd. Maybe orange instead?

Other than that, nice stuff!

There is no time for an extensive feedback round unfortunately, as the deadline

 Indeed :) So far I have 4 broad categories - design, business/politics,
 marketing/blogosphere/user experience and technical.

There's some overlap, but that's the general guidelines. In technical I
have not been putting any GNOME-related speakers - jdub's not on the
list, nor is Federico, Havoc, Nat or any of the other community members
who could give a great setting the compass keynote.

We will have one or two of those, don't worry, but as I said, these
people have close to a 100% acceptance rate - when I invite a community
member it'll be to talk about a specific technology, trend or whatever.
In fact, one or two people usually say I have something really
important to say, can I keynote? Oftentimes, I (or whoever is in
charge) say not really - that's why Seth Nickell did his condom
presentation in Stuttgart as part of the conference opening - Owen
Taylor left him some of his time during the chairman's address.

The list of potential keynotes to hunt down and invite has grown pretty
long - mostly in the technical area, but thanks to Bryan Clark and Seth
Nickell also in the design area.

Some ideas in marketing and user experience (along the lines of
Anderson, Godin, Alan Cooper, ...) would be great.

Hi Dave!
As you asked on irc today for some ideas for more design people.

Aza Raskin [1] [2] is a great and inspiring guy. I had a beer with him
when he stopped by Gothenburg a couple of weeks ago, and I think he have
some good ideas how we can take our interface design to a new level.

1. http://www.humanized.com
2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aza_Raskin
- Andreas

Remember, the goal with a good keynote is to get people thinking
differently about the way the approach things - to bring new
perspectives to how you analyse problems, or get you thinking about
novel solutions. Reinforcing current views isn't really that interesting
 to me.

 Cheers,
 Dave.

This is a rather flat design when compared to what you do usually. Is
there going to be some more changes? Very cool nevertheless.

Hi Claus!
Thanks for the feedback. Your text great.
(it's on http://live.gnome.org/ClausSchwarm in case someone missed that)

We're going with the same style as the Guadec leaflets we did for Fosdem
[1]. Using a flatter style than our interfaces and web graphics because
we're going to print this, and being on safe side, that means no
gradients and shadows.
I also wanted to portray the energy and fun coming from Guadec.
There is also a web-banner [2] in the works that we hopefully can put up
soon.

 Some points maybe worth mentioning:

First, the headline is a good start. However, it generates no real
value: Nobody is is going to travel large distances *just* to find out
about GNOME's future. An brief artiticle in a magazine does the job,
too, and bears no travel expenses. Additionally, if nobody's going
to listen to your opinion, would you *really* bother?

A small sidenote...
What's the 1000 euros thing?
Second, the text misses an opportunity to make some advertising for
GNOME. Additionally, it excludes potential visitors, namely
those who wouldn't consider themselves GNOME community members yet.
Also, it adds nothing new. Readers are usually not *that* clueless.
They don't need an explanation that the answer to a rhetorical
question is the advertised conference. In fact, they are not that
 interested at all.

Third, as a page in the Linux magazine, the text will be read by a
rather broad audience I guess. Thus, only a minority of their readers
will recognize the names of the keynote speakers. And names
present no benefit. Thus -- unless there's space to include the topics
of the keynotes --, I suggest to drop the names completely.

Interesting point. Need to think this over though.
Forth, I'd center the date and place to give it more prominence.

Fifth, you didn't forget the action item. Good. Unfortunately, due to
the color people will probably place it close to the upper paragraph and
miss them. Insert black text in between or use a different color.

Sixth, what about a conference fee? If it's free to attend, we should
say so. I remember some problems about this in the past. If not, we
 should say so, too.

Good point.
What is the fee this year?

and venue, and major keynotes or highlights. If possible ready for
FOSDEM 24-25th of February. (Ask the Birmingham team to prepare.)

Now I have already asked you directly.

I'll open this out to the community - anyone want to design a postcard flyer
for distribution? Feel free to ping me for more info if you need it.

I still have some of the flyers we gave out at LinuxWorld, but we could
certainly do with some more. Especially if we could get some more
information on them (such as who will be speaking etc).

Just adding some names of keynote speakers sounds quite easy to do. If
it's possible for you to print some more, I'm happy to add the names in
for you.

[guadec-list] Accreditiation paper

2006-06-18 Thread Andreas Nilsson
Here is the accreditiation paper I´ve been working on all day. Still
need to fix the schedule on the second page (haven´t finished it yet),
but other than that it should be allright.
Print it out and try it out. It should be folded three times. WarmUp
Weekend is the front and the map is the back.

[guadec-list] accreditiation paper - updated

2006-06-18 Thread Andreas Nilsson
Here is the (almost) final accreditiation paper. Just found a small bug
(Writing support on friday 30th), but other than that it should be fine.

I´ll run off to bed now and I´ll get up early tomorrow finishing off
some tiny details before sending the remaining stuff (the speaker signs
and the full schedule + this accreditiation paper) off to the printer.

Please check it out for any obvious errors before I send it off to the
