Maybe it makes sense to take it for a trial run for LAS and then see if it makes sense to recommend it for the other conferences? But 45 minutes for that would drag. You could do it so that the short presentations are a single track, and then the longer talks are multi-tracked. I've added a sketch to the etherpad [1] - you could have 12 longer talks and either 8 or 16 short ones, depending on whether you go multi-track for those or not. 20 minutes talks could work, but I don't understand the motivation for keeping those in a single track only. You'll end up with only 20 talks for the entire conference. [1] Making the 20-minute slots multi-track would grow that number to 28. 1. This working on the premise that we either cut the lightning talks or the interns lightning talks + team presentations. [guadec-list] Wifi status for the venue
A quick update about the wifi status at the venue. I called the IT person at Folkets Hus yesterday and asked about the capabilities of the network, since our contact in charge of the booking said that there might be some limitations to the network, but was uncertain about the details. The IT guy said that the wifi network should handle up to 300 units at the same time, and that every device gets a cap for 54 Mbits. The entire internet connection is 1 Gbps both up and down. There is 2-3 ethernet jacks in every room, so speakers should be able to connect directly to those (I'll bring my USB ethernet dongles). There is also no particular restriction on the ethernet ports, so it's entirely possible for us to bring extra routers and set up a backup network in case the load on the venue's wifi gets to intense. - Andreas ___ guadec-list mailing list guadec-list@gnome.org https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/guadec-list

Hi! It would be good to have another IRC meeting so everyone can sync up what everyone is up to and if there are any gaps in the organization plans that we need to patch up. [guadec-list] Meetings next week
Hi! Again, sorry for the mixup on Wednesday. Lets try again and see if we can make this work. My suggestion is to have a local, face to face meeting at Tuesday 18.00 Local time (16:00 UTC). At Condecco around Domkyrkan. There is a number of smaller tasks and high bandwidth discussions, such as keynote speakers that needs to be handled at that meeting. Then we can have a IRC meeting in #guadec on Wednesday 19.00 local time/17.00 UTC. This is because some people from the board wanted to participate. This would also allow for people who are not based in Gothenburg to participate. Sounds good? - Andreas ___ guadec-list mailing list guadec-list@gnome.org https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/guadec-list

The location we first looked at was the Chalmers conference halls, but as noted, the price was quite a bit too much for our budget. Smaller class rooms are easier to come by on Chalmers though, so that's why Kalev looked into that (without success). Chalmers IT University is a cooperation project between Chalmers Technical University and University of Gothenburg and they are somewhat a separate organization that have buildings at another place in town. If you're able to get in touch with your contact that would be wonderful! We're having a local meeting tonight, so Oliver and Christopher will be able to tell the status of their searches (so maybe best to wait until tomorrow to reach out). The requirements would be: * August 10-11-12 * About 8 hours a day. Starting around 9, 10, ending about 5, 6, 7 in the night. * As many rooms as we can get. What do we usually have? 10? * Network connectivity. We have some routers and cabling that we can use if it's somewhere with bad wifi, but good ethernet jacks. [guadec-list] minutes from local GUADEC 2015 meeting 141014
Hi everyone! The local GUADEC 2015 team had a small meeting on the 14th. These are the notes: GUADEC 2015 - Local Meeting 2014-10-14 = Participants = Kalev Fabiana Andreas S Andreas N = Agenda = * Venue * Sponsorships * Website * Volunteers * Speakers * Next steps = Venue = * Andreas N spoke to Leif-Göran about Humanisten. This was our initial proposal for a venue, but had been discarded due to renovations. * Leif-Göran mentioned the renovations might have been postponed, so that we might be able to host GUADEC there during the summer. * Leif-Göran will confirm this information with the university. He’ll have a preliminary answer on November, and a definitive one in December. * Our alternatives for a venue are: * Gamlestans medborgarhus - Rent for 3 days at ~13000 SEK * Frilagret + Folkets Hus - Rent for Folkets Hus for 3 days at ~15000 SEK + tax. Hi! I've done the layout of the registration form as a draft https://www.guadec.org/?page_id=1323 However, as you all know, I'm about the least skilled person in the GNOME community when it comes to programming, so I would need some help with those bits. If anyone is skilled in php etc. that would be able to help that would be awesome. The second thing is that we need payment methods. Both via bank and paypal. I have no idea how that stuff works. I spoke to Fabiana about it, and she says this is also above her league (due to the payment part). We will have one or two of those, don't worry, but as I said, these people have close to a 100% acceptance rate - when I invite a community member it'll be to talk about a specific technology, trend or whatever. Is there any section where stuff are overlapping in function, or is there something that can be placed as a sub-category to another category? Another option would perhaps be to kill the tab-idea all together and make the current page using bold text in the navbar or something instead. Regarding the n800. I haven't bought my n800 yet, but does it recognize media=mobile like the 770 does? The press pack might need some more modifications design wise (it might be good to put the sponsors on only the last page and other small stuff), will you be online during the weekend? - Andreas Press pack (will be accompanied by GNOME logos): http://foss.it.brighton.ac.uk/~balor/downloads/Merged.pdf I don't see much changing with it between now and Monday. However, if you have an issue, please email me. The release will be made via the usual channels of spamming the correct mailboxes within media outlets (this is generally accepted practice). Special attention will be given to the technology sections of local and national newspapers. Special attention is to mean that they will get a more directed email Hey Ms Reporter, lookey here and will get contact phone numbers for myself and Thos. And, some will receive follow-up calls. We, at this stage, know who our national target group are. I have a request of Birmingham folk. Could you send me the contact details for local newspapers in the city and surrounds? I'm particularly interested in any city-wide paper that runs a technology section. Jonathan hasn't sent the paperwork yet, but he already pledged the money. We discussed it last week with Thomas. All the same for the above. So it's ok if I put the redhat logo in? [...] This is a rather flat design when compared to what you do usually. Is there going to be some more changes? Very cool nevertheless. Hi Claus! Thanks for the feedback. Your text great. (it's on http://live.gnome.org/ClausSchwarm in case someone missed that) We're going with the same style as the Guadec leaflets we did for Fosdem [1]. Using a flatter style than our interfaces and web graphics because we're going to print this, and being on safe side, that means no gradients and shadows. I also wanted to portray the energy and fun coming from Guadec. There is also a web-banner [2] in the works that we hopefully can put up soon. Some points maybe worth mentioning: First, the headline is a good start. However, it generates no real value: Nobody is is going to travel large distances *just* to find out about GNOME's future. An brief artiticle in a magazine does the job, too, and bears no travel expenses. Additionally, if nobody's going to listen to your opinion, would you *really* bother? A small sidenote... What's the 1000 euros thing? Second, the text misses an opportunity to make some advertising for GNOME. Additionally, it excludes potential visitors, namely those who wouldn't consider themselves GNOME community members yet. Also, it adds nothing new. Readers are usually not *that* clueless. They don't need an explanation that the answer to a rhetorical question is the advertised conference. In fact, they are not that interested at all. Third, as a page in the Linux magazine, the text will be read by a rather broad audience I guess. Thus, only a minority of their readers will recognize the names of the keynote speakers. And names present no benefit. Thus -- unless there's space to include the topics of the keynotes --, I suggest to drop the names completely. Interesting point. Need to think this over though. Forth, I'd center the date and place to give it more prominence. Fifth, you didn't forget the action item. Good. Unfortunately, due to the color people will probably place it close to the upper paragraph and miss them. Insert black text in between or use a different color. Sixth, what about a conference fee? If it's free to attend, we should say so. I remember some problems about this in the past. If not, we should say so, too. Good point. What is the fee this year? 1. http://andreasn.se/diverse/temp/guadec2007-leaflet-a5.pdf 2. http://andreasn.se/diverse/temp/guadec-splash.png - Andreas ___ guadec-list mailing list guadec-list@gnome.org http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/guadec-list

I really like the text you've written and I would be more than happy to put this up at my local university in hope that I can lure some lurking gnomers around here to come to the event. * regarding the Meet, Plan, Party letters: shadows are often very hard to print at a printer and have it look good, so I would advice to avoid that. * The text looks a bit dragged out vertically, and I would also suggest you try to use serif letters instead, as they are easier to read on paper. * The text placed upon the Guadec logo currently looks like they are part of the logo and is a bit hard to read. Try to put it below the logo without clipping it. * The city in the background can also be tricky to print and also makes the text a bit harder to read. I put this item on the agenda for the next board meeting: Print material: Postcards or fliers to announce next GUADEC's time and venue, and major keynotes or highlights. If possible ready for FOSDEM 24-25th of February. (Ask the Birmingham team to prepare.) Now I have already asked you directly. I'll open this out to the community - anyone want to design a postcard flyer for distribution? Feel free to ping me for more info if you need it. I still have some of the flyers we gave out at LinuxWorld, but we could certainly do with some more. Especially if we could get some more information on them (such as who will be speaking etc).
