Lucas, We were discussing this the other day, it would be nice to get something in the style of the Debconf photo [1]. Just need to find a nice open green space, with a good vantage point. Uh and of course a nice dry day. Insight have 9 in stock, PCWB have 5. Froogle search turns up a few more suppliers who probably 5 or so in stock If we can get them all from Insight then that would make the invoicing easier. I know that Linksys brought out some VXWorks based versions of their devices which don't have enough ram to run Linux on them. Ebuyer has 71 WAP54Gs in stock, however we can't guarantee that they are suitable for running OpenWRT/Freifunk. What about some alternative brands? [guadec-list] Accommodation
I did some research on accommodation options for GUADEC. For sponsorees I think we should consider the Birmingham Etap. This is one of those self service hotels from the Accor group. Its located pretty close to the Conservatoire, 10/15 minutes walk. The rooms are all triple occupancy, two bunks + double and are £35/night. Breakfast is around £3 per person. I spoke to the receptionist on the phone and they said they had plenty space in July (i originally asked if they could do 20 rooms.) They might also be able to do a reduced rate for a large group booking and potentially we might be able to get a conference discount. Its not the most luxury of hotels but each room has its own toilet shower. This would also make sense for those travelling on a budget, we could provide some assistance (e.g. a Wiki page) for those who want to group up to share a room. The Conservatoire is surrounded by hotels due to its central location, a search on Google Maps UK for hotels near Paradise Place, Birmingham B3 3HG gives lots of hits. However, it's quite possible that some of them don't have enough money for the travel. Do you think it'll be possible to get sponsorships for some of them, even if they didn't contribute to GNOME before? I would hope that we would be able to provide sponsorship considering their future contributions. Also, just a thought: it might be nice to have a small room where SoC students who come will be able to meet, and so people interested in their projects can come to discuss with them. What do you think? I really like the sound of that, Paul will be able to advise us further on the availability of such a room. Perhaps we could have each SoC person who attends have very-mini BOF with their mentors and interested parties. We could give them a small timeslot when the room would be available for them to use and then people can hang around chatting. My only worry would be to make it too formal/intimidating and scary. Very good idea as usual Vincent! Would you like to email the SoC students and try and get an idea of how many are planning to come? However, common sense says that if the carriage of the GUADEC big purchase is too expensive to consider buying to Killermundi, it is probably no good business for them to come with their stock and try to sell just a % of units. I understand. That's a shame though, i'm not exactly sure how we could solve that though. Thanks! Re: [guadec-list] Guadec Planning Meeting Notes - 20th January 2007
On Wed, 2007-01-31 at 12:47 +0100, Rodrigo Moya wrote: this is ok for us europeans, americans and people from other rich countries, but my experience is that people from Latin America and India (the ones I've been hanging with while at GUADEC's) have no money to go with the rich hackers for lunch to the places those rich hackers go, so they end up going on their own, which makes it hard for most of them to get to talk to other hackers, since lunch and dinners are when you have more chance to meet other people. And that happened in Spain last year, which is much much more cheaper than the UK, so in the UK it's gonna be impossible for them to even go to 1 lunch/dinner (as some Chilean people did in Vilanova last year) Rodrigo, thanks for raising this point. It is indeed a shame if people feel excluded because of money and so we must definitely avoid this happening again. So, even if we have it optional, I would suggest we try to get all hackers together at least at lunch time, and offering free lunch is the best option :-) Indeed. Provided the food is reasonable, plentiful and efficient. If it isn't then those who can afford it will just go elsewhere. And we'll end up in the same mess :( In Copenhagen the catering was really good (except for the 1st day, where it was all vegetarian :-) so I'm sure you can find someone to do some acceptable catering. Maybe we can expend a bit more money and have a good catering and then have rich hackers pay for the lunch as part of the registration. I also think it is important that the catering should be of the sitting down variety. If you just get sandwiches then people might be less likely to interact with people in a similar way to a sit down meal. Although I guess this kind of social interaction can still take place with evening meals. One option might be to distribute vouchers that can be redeemed at local restaurants to provide a fixed discount on a meal, e.g. £5 or £10. On the subject of the network, i'm happy to help with that. Thomas mentioned that you still haven't got the network connectivity to the site finalised. One potential idea that I had was to contact a local ISP who may be able to arrange a circuit. This is what Debconf has done. Alternative uklinux.net or ukfsn.net might be able to arrange the same thing.
