Heart check resulted in mans death By Charlie StongA MAN died after a routine check for people with suspected heart problems went catastrophically wrong. During a routine angiogram X-ray checking for heart problems at King George V Hospital in Goodmayes, a piece of furry tissue from one of Dominic Correia's coronary arteries was dislodged by a catheter. The tissue found its way to the arteries leading to the back of Mr Correia's brain and blocked the blood supply - known an a cerebral infarction. He underwent surgery to try to reduce the size of the oiece of tissue but never regained consciousness and died. Last week Walthamstow Coroner's Court heard how only one in every 1,000 angiograms ends in such a piece of tissue being dislodged, and even fewer cases end in death. Mr Correia, of Love Lane, Woodford Green, underwent heart bypass surgery in 1993 and also had four grafts inserted to help the blood flow to the heart. However, his son Kennedy told the inquest his father had been "in the best health for three years". That was until a visit to his native Goa shortly before his death. While in Goa Mr Correia suffered left ventricle failure - the failure of the heart to pump blood properly. On his return Mr Correia sought advice from his GP who advised an angiogram. Mr Correia drove to King George V Hospital on April 18 this year, the court heard, for the check-up which usually should take no longer than an hour. But during the angiogram the court was told that Mr Correia was sick and suffered headaches. The procedure was immediately stopped. His speech became slurred in the aftermath of the procedure and cardiologists suspected a problem with the back part of the brain as Mr Correia also showed signs of disorientation. However a CT scan was not carried out at that time as, the court was told, any such problems would not immediately show up in the scan's results. A CT scan was carried-out the following day and results confirmed the cardiologists' fears that the brain had been affected. Mr Correia was transferred to the specialist Oldchurch hospital in Romford where surgery was carried-out to unblock the infarcted area. His family were told at this stage that there was a 50 per cent risk of death and, if Mr Correia survived, a further 50 per cent chance of him being mentally disabled. However, they agreed that surgery should go ahead. Mr Correia was transferred back to King George V Hospital but did not regain consciousness and died 11 days after the angiogram. Chief of naval staff Air Chief Marshal S P Tyagi takes the ceremonial guard during the parade.Churchill Alemao Stiffens stand on Mopa Airport issue From Sanjay Borkar in MargaoMargao, Nov 27: If government fails to scrap the Mopa Airport Project by 26 January 2006, I will either quit the congress party, and will come on roads with my supporters to agitate against or I will form anew govt. in Goa to scrap it South Goa Member of Parliament (Loksabha) Churchill Alemao, gave ultimatum to state govt., while addressing a public meeting which had been organized to awake people on Mopa issue at Blasco Executive Center-Navelim. This was second meeting held in south Goa, over the issue of Mopa Airport. The very large number of crowd was surged for this second meeting, as Mr. Alemao had proclaimed through newspapers that, most of the MLAs would be present on the meeting. But only four MLAs, UGDP-MLA Mathani Saldanha-Cortalim, Francis Silvera-St.Andre, Aleixo Sequeira-Loutulim and the Panchayat Minster Subhash Shirodkar -Shiroda, were present. Mr. Alemaos brother Minister for Urban Development Fisheries Joaquim Alemao, who has been supporting agitator, was himself absent on the desk. When people queried Mr. Alemao the reason of his brothers absent, he replied and joked that he might have afraid of the desk. Mr. Alemao also said that, Chief Minster Pratapsing Rane has assured him, that the project will be scrapped, But he doesnt have the faith on congress govt., for this reason the government should come with the cabinet decision of scrapping Mopa Airport Project. He also demanded and appealed to state government to keep the Dabolim Airport for civilians and the Navy from there should be shifted to Karwar. If Mopa Airport comes into reality, It will harm the Goans. Tourism is Back bone of Goa, and if this happens, being Mopa is close to Maharashtra they will build the Star hotels and will erect shacks to serve Tourist, and will pull all the money bags to their side. Ultimately the goans will face the problem of unemployment as the star hotels from south goa would close. For this reason I strongly oppose Mopa Airport Project said minister Subhash Shirodkar. Erstwhile MLA andadvocate Radharav Gracias, while explaining the facts said that, if state government stops the land acquisition process for this project, its very easy to eradicate this issue, People applauded and demanded to stop the process. MLA Francisco Silveira, MLA Mathani Saldnha, MLA Aleixo Sequeira, Ulhas Buyao, Fr. Margao goalkeeper denied several goal scoring opportunities of Verna in the first half. In the second half Verna scored through Joaquim Fernandes, Agnelo Misquita and Gabriel Felizardo. Meanwhile Chinchinim surprised second placed Canacona with a second half goal scored with a powerful grounder by Nazareth Gomes. In another match Tivim survived the Navelim scare until the halfway mark. In the second half unstoppable Navelim pumped in three goals through Godwin Pinto, Henry Fernandes and Melroy Rebello to take an unassailable lead at the top of the table.
