[h-cost] So you want to be Jack the Ripper...

2005-10-29 Thread Dawn
Does anybody know the size and shape of a man's cravat c. 1889? Were men
even wearing cravats at this time? I'm trying to find images of men's
outwear and not having a lot of luck at the moment.

:-( wish there was something in the states like this! Took a peek
just out of curiosity and saw something that sounded like it might be
 rather useful.

If you go to groups.yahoo.com and enter a search string of SCA recycle
4 local groups will come up.

OakenFreebies

PentamereFreebies

If you look for SCA sale you'll find

garb4sale

[h-cost] OT early medieval copper jewelry on ebay

2005-10-29 Thread Danielle Nunn-Weinberg

Greetings,

Please forgive another commercial posting here... I've just posted
an early medieval copper parure on ebay which would probably be
perfect for Viking or Saxon, although I do admit that, that time
period is greatly outside my expertise:

[h-cost] grey waistcoat embroidery

2005-10-29 Thread Bjarne og Leif Drews

Well, i know i said i had to waite with this till when i have finished the
yellow dress, but i could not resist my lust to try out the mulberry silk
threads i got.
This is going to be a dark grey gentlemans embroidered waistcoat of 1770ies.
It is vey hard to trace pattern to dark fabric, so i used my rice paper,
reversed the pattern and sticked it to the backside of the taffeta. Then i
used white sewingthread and small running stitches to outline the whole
pattern. This worked fine, but it took some time to do.
Here is one pattern repeat of the pattern. At the bottom of the page;

Re: [h-cost] Holiday Gift Exchange -REMINDER

2005-10-29 Thread Dawn
Just a reminder to folks who want to participate. The sign-up deadline
is Tuesday, November 1st.

If you have not sent me your mailing address and introduction (see
below) you are not signed up.

Dawn

Welcome to the 2005 H-COST Holiday Gift Exchange.

Please DO NOT reply to the List. Please address all replies to me at
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Please leave the H-COST header intact in your reply so your message does
not end up in the spam-trap.

_What we're doing. _

We will be exchanging small costume and sewing related gifts with each
other. To participate you must sign up (below). There are rules, so that
everybody knows what is expected of them, but I want this to be fun so I
am keeping the rules simple. If you want to participate, please read
this entire message.

The Sign-up Deadline is November 1st. The Mailing Deadline is Dec.19th.

_The Rules._

1. You are responsible for completing your end of the exchange on time.
Please be sure you can follow through on your committment.

2. Gifts should be sewing or costume related. Gifts may be hand-made for
the recipient, or purchased, or may be items you already have. Gifts
should be clean and in good condition and suitable for giving. You will
be given guidelines to help you choose a gift for your recipient.

3. Gifts should be in the $10-$15 US range, and no more than that. (8-12
euros). It's ok if you can get something on sale or make something from
supplies you already have. Second-hand books in good condition are ok.
We all know how many desireable but out-of-print titles are out there.

4. Plan to mail your gift in early to mid December. Remember that it
will cost you postage on top of what you spent on the gift. Small and
lightweight objects are generally cheaper to mail. If you are mailing
overseas you may have to fill out a Customs Declaration.

5. After the sign-up period I will create a mailing list for all
participants so that I can stay in touch with you and send reminders.
Email should be addressed to me, or to this list and not to H-Cost.

6. Each person who joins will be randomly matched up with one person
they will send a gift to. Additionally, someone else will send a gift to
you. For example, Ann will send to Bob. Bob will send to Clara. Clara
will send to Ann. This way each person will meet two H-Costumers by
giving and receiving. You will know who you are sending to, but not who
is sending to you.

_Join Now!_

1. To join you must send me your name and mailing address. Please reply
to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and NOT to the H-Cost list. The sign-up period
ends November 1st.

2. Introduce yourself. Tell me a little bit about you, your family, your
pets, what you do -- as much as you feel comfortable sharing. It's been
suggested that you include your dress size.

3. Tell me some of your Favorite Things. What do you sew? What time
period or place interests you? Is there a favorite technique or process
that you enjoy? (weaving, dyeing, embroidery, etc.) Do you have a
favorite color or theme?

4. If you live outside the US and know your Duty limit, please include
it. If you are within the US and do not wish to mail to another country,
please let me know.

I think that about covers it. If you have questions or concerns, please
reply to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and NOT to the H-Cost list.

That's odd ... there are pages at Amazon for both volume 1 and the

page they have for it? And it's not accepting the order?

[h-cost] Moda a Firenze 1540-1580

2005-10-29 Thread Susan B. Farmer
Im about to send this book back to the UGA library (ya gotta love
InterLibrary Loan!). Not only does it have an enormous collection of
paintings that I've never seen before, it also has a picture of, well,
a sweater.

Figure cption reads Women's camicola or knitted jacket. First quarter
of seventeenth century. Florence, Museo Stibbert.

Camicola knitted in red and gold silk, made my male professionals.
This type of garment, already present in Eleanora's wardrobe, is
recorded with increasing frequency in the documents of the second half
of the century.
