Re: [h-cost] Sharpe BBC(A) series

2006-08-02 Thread Kate M Bunting
I thought the Sharpe stories were set at various times during the
Peninsular War (1808-13) and after. I believe the military uniforms were
pretty accurate.

BBC America's Playhouse show has been running the series of 2 hour
Sharpe movies lately. All 1813.
What do you (collectively) think of the costuming, both civilian and
military?
I like it, but what do I know? :)

What and where is Costume College? And the GenCon
that everybody was going to last week? Isn't there
some big deal in Kalamazoo, MI in the spring?

As I am just getting into historic costuming after
years of sewing, I would love to meet others with
similar interests and learn new things. Is there like
a master listing of this type of event? Where could I
find more info?

 Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone else is going to be at
Costume College this weekend. After all these years
 of
it being practically in my back yard, I'm actually
 going!

The men's costuming is pretty good. The women's falls somewhere
between mediocre and appalling.

I've never read the books, but from watching the series (mainly to drool
over Sean Bean) I suspect this is an accurate reflection of the relative
importance of the female characters!

Hi,
I read in an antique magazine about the exhibition. It says the exhibition
is on now and last the rest of this year.
Its at Rosenborg Pallace in the heart of Copenhagen, so it should not be
difficult for you to find it.

I believe they're going to be changing the name for
next year, but this link will tell you everything
there is to know for now. Unfortunately, it's so
popular, you can't just drop in. No memberships at the
door, not even for the day! But if you happen to be in
town, you can drop in to the Dealers' Room without
being a member.

I live practically on their doorstep, and I've never
gotten around to going until now. Which is especially
weird since I do so little costuming anymore. Oh well,
it will be nice to see people, at least!

GenCon is a gaming convention, as in Dungeons Dragons, Magic card
tournaments, and napoleonic miniatures. They host, among other events, a
Masquerade on Saturday evening. It's held these days in Indianapolis,
where they have a contract through at least 2010. It begins this year on
Aug 10 and runs through the 13th , and you can buy day passes at the door.

[h-cost] Cotton gloves?

2006-08-02 Thread Audrey Bergeron-Morin

Hi all,

I remember someone telling us (maybe here, maybe on another list, but this
one has more members so I'll try here first) that to embroider and embellish
fabrics and not get them dirty, he/she cut the tips off simple white cotton
gloves. What kind of gloves did you use, and where would I find this?

Thanks,

Audrey
