[h-cost] bounce confirmation?
I just got an auto email regarding emails bouncing, and I have no idea why.. and I've just noticed that I haven't gotten any emails from the list since I got the auto membership reminder email on December 1. I've not made any changes to my membership and fear that this is a phishing scam. Has anyone else gotten one of these? Re: [h-cost] bounce confirmation?
Actually ... it is because Comcast have recently been purchased by Time Warner and is forcing all of us to migrate to the new servers by bouncing your emails. Go into what you thought was spam from Comcast and read it concering your new service. Ours was titled: Welcome to Road Runner High Speed from Time Warner Cable. Here in the DFW area it is tx.rr.net now instead of comcast.net It goes through instructions on how to do the migration. [h-cost] Re: What's your dressmakers dummy wearing?
Mine is wearing an original flapper dress. It was given to my husband's grandmother as payment for work that she did for an elderly women (Marta McCracken) who had worn it. There are no tags in it and I know nothing much about it. It is a dove gray with lots of beading on it, an evening dress with a metal bag that goes with it and a pewter leaf necklace to match. There is a silk wrap that goes with it but it is so fine and fragile that I have it in a box. Marta was well to do and got lots of gifts from her sister who was also well to do--this dress was from her sister. I don't know if any of you are following TVO's presentation of the BBC series that follows the lives of several archaeologists/experts who are recreating life in the 16th century. Unlike most reality shows, this one is not set up for conflict, rather for discovery, hence the reason they chose people who were knowledgeable of, and experienced with recreating, the period in question. The costuming is wonderful, right down to the torn shirt of one of the fellows, frayed hems, grotty nails and all. They're eating real period food, doing real period tasks, with knowledge and in some cases with additional expertise. There's no whining and whinging and secret caches of modern items. They are completely and utterly dedicated to their year in the 16th century. It has been an interesting journey and I look forward to further instalments. Many thanks to all who have given some input on this. There are about 14 of us getting together and doing this grouping, so some of the designers/looks were requested by the others, but sending the information on links for those their way is still very helpful. My library has two books with fashion in the 1960's, and yes, they are on hold already. I'm also thinking of what TV shows or movies would be best to look at (aside from the aforementioned Avengers) for some ideas as well. I'm amused at the way this particular group of fen are influencing me to doing a bit more modern/retro costuming. Some of them are doing a USO type show, hence the 1940's pattern search as well. :-) Jonnalyhn Wolfcat / Angharat Yahoo! Re: [h-cost] The Green Valley
It was absolute bliss, utterly fascinating - and in Scotland they decided to take it off after 9 episodes, so we had to get the DVD to see the last 3 months, grrr! I learned so much that you just don't think of - not specifics, but general things, like, spring is not a time of plenty, spring is the lean time while you wait for new stuff to grow. And what tools and structures are permanent, and which are temporary or disposable, made new when you need them. Wonderful series. [h-cost] Research on medieval instrument cases?
My 10-year-old son, who is far more musically inclined than I am, just had his first experience at a medieval costumed event, where he went for the sole purpose of finding the opportunity to play early music with other like-minded souls. He intends to do more of this. He has a suitable costume (c. 1300 in style, roughly Luttrell Psalter working-class). However, he could use a way to carry his recorder safely and conveniently. Ideally, it should be something that hangs from his body, as he has the habit of putting things down and forgetting them. I have never had the need to research period instrument cases, and I don't really want to start now. But given the number of minstrel-types doing re-enactment, I'm betting someone else has already devoted energy to this subject. Can anyone point me to a webpage or other source for guidance? If I don't find any hard documentation, I figure I'll take some quilted fabric and make a recorder-sized tube, and then cover that with some wool -- or else just use batting between two layers to create a padded tube. The end could close with a foldover that can be fastened (latchet or button), or maybe with a drawstring. It would also need a strap that would let him carry it on his back. (He does wear a belt, but he's small for his age, and even a soprano recorder would end up knocking around his knees if he hung it from a belt.) If anyone has advice to improve on that scheme, I'm all ears. I have ruled out stuffing it down his hood liripipe primarily because he'd probably end up sitting on it. But believe me, I was tempted. --Robin ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
RE: [h-cost] Research on medieval instrument cases?
Robin, I'm sending this to the Calonlist as I know there are musicians there but I think you are pretty much on track with a tubular pouch but probably a tie flap and not a drawstring. Basically, make the tube about 2 1/2-3 longer so that it folds below the mouth/opening and you can have a 1 1/2 flap that ties to the body of the tube. Having the fold below the mouth of the tub closes it and with wool or water proofing stuff protects it from most elements. lucet cords, braided, that goes over the shoulder and under the arm should work. Though I don't have proof of the practice, you or when he is old and wants to learn, could embroider a design on the case.
