That would be me. Thanks, Kathy! I'm certain that you are correct
in thinking that others on the list will appreciate it.

For other searchers, if you do the search that Kathy suggests, the
back of the coat is on page 26 of the results. Or if you'd like to
get more specific, you can add dress into the keyword box.
Strangely, the results of that search do not include the gorgeous
embroidered belt and other interesting items that appear in the
results of the search without dress as a keyword. 16th century in
the period box plus dress as a keyword gives yet another set of fun
stuff.

Thanks again,

[h-cost] Split drawer pattern online?

2007-05-15 Thread Saragrace Knauf
There used to be a split drawer's drafting pattern/instruction online, which I
cannot, for the life of me, find again.
As I recall, it was something like Mrs. Clarks pattern (it was a simple name,
could have been Brown, Smith etc)

Anyone know where it is or have a copy of it?

Thanks,

Is there some relationship to crotch depth, amount of overlap,
fabric types that you have experimented with which would help with
this phenomenon?

[h-cost] Perpignan cloth

2007-05-15 Thread Kathy Page
I have just been flipping through Dressing Renaissance Florence, and they
mention hosiery itself was made of perpignan cloth (perpignano), a washable
and stretchy woolen jersey fabric, originally developed by weavers in
Perpignan, France.
Has anyone ever heard of this stuff before, and if so, what is its' weave
structure? What would it be close to in modern terms? This answers a lot of
questions why Italian men's hose are so smooth and tight looking. If I can find
a reasonable equivalent, it will make my job MUCH easier on this commission
that I have been stalled on for so long.

RE: [h-cost] a cheat's late Victorian hat

2007-05-15 Thread Sharon Collier
If you want/are willing to wear a bonnet, I have a VERY inexpensive
solution. Find a straw hat blank, (I got mine at Michael's Craft Store for
about $2.) Cut a U shaped piece out of the back so your head fits
comfortably. Paint black using spray paint or craft paint. Sew some black
bias trim over rough edge where you cut it off. A simple black ribbon over
the top to hold it on and Voila! a mourning bonnet. You can drape your scarf
over it, or sew/hot glue black flowers/leaves/feathers. Remember, for
Victorian hats, if you think it's got enough stuff on it, add more!

Subject: [h-cost] a cheat's late Victorian hat

Hi everyone, A friend is throwing a costume party next month and has decided
the theme is 'an Irish wake' so she wants everyone in black or green, so
when the topic of mourning comes up I tend to think Victorian as I already
had plans for a natural form dress I just decided to bump this project to
the top of my list and make it mourning wear. But I'm stuck on headwear, I
have a chiffon scarf that would work OK as a widow's veil. It is a long
thin rectangle so it won't work just draped over my head, but if I attach
the long side to the edge of a hat it should work OK as a veil (I
experimented with pinning it to the inside of my sun hat and it came down to

about an inch below my shoulders). I have about 1/2 a metre of buckram
(though it's not proper millinery buckram) and some wire left over from
making the crescent of my 16th century French hood plus some scraps of black

velveteen or satin to cover it. I've also got Butterick 4210 which I might
be able to adapt, but I don't have money to buy a bonnet and I don't really
want to spend much money on this costume (as the only place I can usually
wear Victorian stuff is a dance so bonnets/hats aren't really appropriate)
thanks
Elizabeth

I'll blame this on post-session geekery. ;-)

Give us free time, wireless internet access, chocolate and alcohol and what
happens? Images exchanges. No, no... not *those* kinds of images! ;-)
Completely different variety of porn
It's nice to know my memory wasn't completely befuddled and that I could
indeed re-find some images I said I had. I don't have the email address for
the one specifically asking for these images, however I thought I'll post it
here, chances are reay good you A) know who you are and B) are on
this list in the first place, so why not share the bounty with everyone else
at the same time?
The following site is a French images agency site, to which I found the 16th
c. Venetian coat with front, back and fabric detail.
http://www.photo.rmn.fr/c/htm/Search_New.aspx
To find the coat specifically, put in 16th century under period then
silk under Technic/Material, hit search. his will bring up a specifics
prompt that asks you to choose one from the list. Choose textile and hit
search again. The very first image is the coat, after that, you are rewarded
with 50+ pages of images that all share 16thc. silk textile keywords. Be
prepared for a whackload of tapestry images, but sift through them for other
gems hiding between.
After you're finished with those pages, wander around a little more.
Guaranteed to find tonnes of nifty things. :-) Great time consumer and drool
producer.
