How did they end up with that gown anyway?

Back in 1979 I designed The Three Penny Opera as a senior design student.
There is a brothel scene in which I put the girls in teddies, tap pants,
chemisesall kinds of what was just then becoming trendy lingerie

period [we did it in WWI]

Last year I went to a show at my old college... another Brecht play: The
Good Woman of Szechwan. In one scene the actors are pinning up laundry on a
line to dry. Up goes one of my outfits for the other Brecht show.
Back stage I

complimented the props designer for her superior taste in undies. She looked
at me sideway so I explained she had used something I had designed 30 years
ago. Well, I got the Brecht feel right, I suppose. I quipped.

But it's true, you never know where your costumes will end up.
I made a pile of costumes for the IMAX movie they use at Hearst
Castle (don't ask) about the life of W.R. Hearst. The clothes barely
appear in the movie, but one of the outfits went from Cosprop (the
supplier) to ABC Costumes, a hire house, to a school hire department
- schools hire costumes from there for plays!

[h-cost] OT: ISO scan of a Morris tapestry

2007-10-20 Thread Chris Laning
I'm looking for someone who has a better picture than I do of the
19th-century tapestry from Morris Co. called Adoration of the
Magi (designed by E. Burne-Jones).

All the pictures I can find on the Internet are tiny (400 pixels or
so) and all the details of the original are invisible. I need a
better look at this, so if anyone has a book with a better picture in
it, I'd love to hear about it. This was one of the most popular
Morris tapestries, so I know there are examples out there and some of
them have probably featured in books.

TIA

I'm looking for North American retailers/wholesalers of ramie cloth.
For that matter, I'm interested in any vendor who ships to the US...

Re: [h-cost] my very first francaise dress

2007-10-20 Thread Leif og Bjarne Drews

Hi,
Yes you are right about this, and the bad thing about the ghost story at
Selsø is that it dont fit with any of the persons who lived there.
There is a tale about a wife who killed her husband in the bed, because she
was so jealoux about his life with other wimen, later that night she regreat
her deal, and threw herself out of the window down into the water where she
drowned. The story points out that it was the wife of a person who rebuilded
the castle in the 1730ies, problem with that is that he was a widower, his
wife died before him.
I can only laugh at such people who think they feels other things than the
rest of us, they are not telling the trouth.

My dress ended at the castle because i gave it away to them, so they could
exhibit. They needed things, because it was almost empty of interriors.

[h-cost] Interesting 1890s Group Photo

2007-10-20 Thread Penny Ladnier
Today I purchased at an antique store a really nice large group photo. I
thought you all would like to see it. The cabinet card photo's back is written
Uncle Lem Donahue's home at Sandyville, West Virginia.
The raw image is at: http://www.costumegallery.com/Photos/WestVA.jpg
Same image with markings of interest:
http://www.costumegallery.com/Photos/WestVA2.jpg
The photo images are really large for you to view the details and compare the
two images. If you are viewing the Internet Explorer, make sure to place your
cursor on the lower right corner. Wait for the little box with arrows to appear
then click on it for the enlargement. I do suggest to open two windows to do
the comparison.

I am trying to figure what is the occasion/event of this photo.

Details:
A. Two girls holding porcelain dolls.
B. Two elderly women holding bonnets in their hand.
C. Two men holding up papers in a display manner.
D. Toddler girl in a floor length dress
E. Baby in a long white dress
F. I don't know if this is a ghost part of the photo or a blur. It is of a man
on a horse.
G. I am not sure if this is two ladies or one lady who moved while the photo
was taken.
OVALS: I placed ovals or circles around what maybe flowers/corsages. A couple
of girls are holding flowers.

Several of the children at wearing hats and some boys are holding theirs.

I wish I could find a group photo like this of my family. Maybe this photo can
make its way back to Uncle Lem's family or if I can find the county's library
and send it to them. The dealer told me that he had looked up Sandyville, WV on
the internet. He said it was a community not a town.
