Re: [h-cost] ping? nothing since Jan 13

2012-01-17 Thread Patricia Dunham
not really well, not much... my husband found a duvet cover at St Vinnie's
the other day, lovely cherry cotton velveteen. he's crowing about making a
summer-weight frock coat for his steampunkery, since I got him the patterns
last Christmas... of course, the pattern came with 2 vests, but not a
double-breasted one like he wants... or maybe we'll experiment with this stuff
and use it for a lining eventually?

for myself, he also found a P(urdue?) black melton stadium blanket at the same
store?, the preceding week, for, again, $11.99, for MY current daydreaming
project, a Caucasus "burka", men's winter garment, as per this pic...
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/11/02/1032423/-Why-Winter-is-Good-for-Occupy-Wall-Street
And of course, as soon as we found this fabric, it got warmer! Still working
through cleaning up the blanket, deciding what to do with the excess fabric
(probably going to leave it attached but hemmed up or something...), and
whether or not the cleaned-up wool will be nice enough against the skin, or if
I'll have to figure out some sort of lining... Part of the clean-up involved
leaving it out on a clothes-line for several days... the way the water beaded
on the surface was just classic!

Really interesting in that it shows the clothing of the working women at the
factory and also the fancy clothes of the folks at the wedding. Love the
shoes!

Here is a great silent film from 1930 Nottingham, England lace factory.
This shows the process of making the lace. At the end of the film, there is
an interesting wedding featuring the lace. Love the bridesmaid with the
beret hat!

Re: [h-cost] flash drives & archives

2012-01-17 Thread Cin
my husband, a high end flash engineer, had this to say about flash &
archives in response to a question from my digital photo class. this
is the "short" version. the actual version is highly technical &
mind-numbingly dull except to those in the industry. this is what you
need to know for most practical, consumer uses:

"Regarding long term backup the full answer is complex and depends on
how the flash was used and exactly what kind of flash is used inside
the card/USB drive as well as the flash management algorithm and the
level of error correction and detection that is implemented in the
hardware. The short answer is:"

"If the flash is stored at room temp (up to a maximum of about 50C) in
a relatively dry place, and the flash was not used heavily (i.e. the
entire card was filled up and erased less than 10 times) prior to
being left in storage, then even the cheapest flash cards or USB
drives should provide a minimum of 10 years of storage. The better
quality flash should be able to provide up to 100 years of storage.
The plastic parts and connectors may not last for 100 years but the
bits inside the flash should. While the card is in storage, if it is
periodically read, let's say once a year, then that can improve the
retention time for the data. If the entire card is read and rewritten
once every few years that can also increase the retention time."

"Of course, all of this depends on how the flash management algorithm
was implemented and on the the type of flash used inside. The big
name brand cards (not just SanDisk but others too) use better flash.
The really cheap cards that you can get online from all kinds of shady
Chinese vendors use flash that may not even last one year."

"I hope this helps."

2012-01-17 Thread lisa58
Hi Katy--

HAving gone through getting into costuming with children, I totally
understsand. It's very hard to find time or dedicated space.

None of my photos that are vintage that I have scanned, are online at
this point. I don't know how to go about it, and don't really have the
time to mess with it currently. I do have it on a flash drive, and am
constantly adding more--just trying to get through and scan everything in
my collection before the next flea market season begins.

The Titanic Vintage Dance sounds fabulous--I saw your flyers at Arisia in
the rack, I only wish it were something closer. Plus at that point I"ll
be working flat-out for Costume Con the following month. (not to mention
work, meetings, etc). I am planning on Lunacon in March, will try out my
next historical costume presentation there--just have to complete one
more piece for it, workout a soundtrack, and some short documentation.

Arisia was a blast, and I Was thrilled to be able to present the costume
I got the idea for last year at Arisia.

Once I get back seriously into trying to ID my vintage photos, I will
definitely love to use you for a reference. I have a costumer friend
that I always ask about uniform identifying--he's really smart about it,
and it's great to ahve other folks too. Maybe sometime we can talk about
how to get the photos online.

Have you thought about going to Dress U. in June?

Yours inc osutming, Lisa A

It was nice to meet you too. It would have been nice to sit down and
chat. I had hoped to get back to doing some panels again this year (I
had a baby 2 1/2 years ago and just couldn't take part in much
recently) but by the time I realized I was not getting any emails
about joining panels it was too late to get added. Next year,
hopefully. Do you have any of the pictures on-line? If you are stuck
on any of them I'd be happy to give my opinion.

I have not have the chance to do much costuming recently, so had
nothing fun or new to wear to Arisia. Life's just too stressful at
the moment and I don't have a sewing space right now--my 2 year old
took the remaining available space. I did throw together an outfit to
wear to the Girl Genius Ball.

My husband wants to go to Lunacon, one of his favorite authors is the
guest, but I don't think we can as he is having surgery a week later
and $ is just too tight. We might stop in at Boskone, but not sure
yet.

The next thing we are going to is taking my boys to PAX East in April,
and then our huge Titanic Vintage Dance Weekend in April which, due to
my co-organizers new baby, I am now the primary organizer! Between
that and Newport in August I have not a minute to spare for anything.
But they'll be fun events I can enjoy once they are here...
