[h-cost] Video of a costume workshop

2012-02-22 Thread Linda Walton
There is a link here to a video which was shown this morning during the
BBC's Breakfast programme. It shows a costume workshop in London,
where the costumes were made for films nominated for the Oscar for Best
Costume Design this year. The workshop places great stress on
authenticity, so I think you will enjoy it.

[h-cost] video of costumne workshop

2012-02-22 Thread fyneha...@aol.com

Thank you so much for that link! I have seen both films and loved the
costuming. It's great that he mentions attention to detail for the making of
the costumes. If you live around the Los Angeles area, these costumes are
usually in exhibit at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising around
April. Go if you can and see them close up!

For starching--I only did a doily, so maybe it wouldn't scale up--I mixed a
it of starch with some cold water zapped the mixture in the microwave.

ixing in cold water works immensely better than trying dry starch in hot water,
hat I do have experience attempting.

[h-cost] OT--Anthony Trollope's steampunk novel

2012-02-22 Thread Lavolta Press
I don't really do journalism any more. But, when I discovered that
Anthony Trollope (author of numerous Victorian classics such as
Barchester Towers) had written a steampunk science fiction novel, I
couldn't resist reviewing it for Fantasy and Science Fiction magazine.
The novel is titled The Fixed Period, and the review is in the
Curiosities column, the one that discusses old and obscure books. It was
printed in the March/April 2012 issue and I have received my reviewer's
copies, so the issue should be available soon.
